Chapter 3: Surprise Explanation

As InuYasha landed in the dirt of the well in the feudal era, Kagome ran to answer the door. Unaccustomed to her new sense of hearing and smell she was immediately assaulted by intensified she had known since childhood and a multitude of ones she had no name for. A very familiar scent caught her attention as she looked around then down to the ground. Laying on the welcome mat was one of her textbooks. The one for her last test in fact. She deeply inhaled and her eyes widened as she realized why that scent was so familiar. Wet dirt, pine and a hint of cinnamon. Only one person had ever smelled that way, InuYasha. She smiled fondly as she picked the book up, he may be gruff on the outside, but she knew he had a big heart. A tangy scent laced the book as she held to book to her, and if she was more used to her senses she would have recognized the excitement and fear. The sound of a large truck going by made her jump, even though she knew the road was at the bottom of the shrine’s many stairs. “Now I know how he feels every time he comes here.” she spoke aloud as she turned and went inside.

‘ He must have seen the book at Kaede’s after I left.’ Kagome thought as she closed the door and made her way back to the kitchen. ‘He must have thought I would sit him if he came too early.’

“Who was it Kagome?” Hitomi asked as she sipped a cup of tea.

“No one. “ Kagome responded, then thought about it, “It must have been InuYasha though because my text book was on the mat.”

“Well that was nice of him.” Her mom said as she stood and placed her empty cup in the sink. “I hope you have fun with the girls tonight Kagome. I will see you when you get home.”

“Nite momma.” Kagome said as she followed her mom upstairs and went into her room. Nothing had changed much over the years. Sure there were more pictures of her and the group in the feudal era. In most of them InuYasha scowled or was absent. Only in one did she catch him smiling and that was when he thought she had left. It was after the incident with the moth demon when he went full demon and killed all the bandits and freed her and the rest of the group. He wanted to go on his own, fearful he would endanger the group. She had stubbornly told him no and said, ‘I will stay with you no matter what InuYasha, I promise. Even if you turn full demon or human, you scare me, but I know you would never hurt me or anyone. Your heart won’t allow it.’

For the first time she truly looked at herself in the mirror. Her eyes were speckled with gold and her teeth were sharper. The most recognizable change however was the fuzzy ears, so like InuYasha’s that nestled in her thick black hair. Suddenly she panicked. “Oh no! My friends! What will they think? I can’t go out looking like this!” she frantically looked around for the hat InuYasha usually wore when he came into this era and smacked her head as she recalled that InuYasha had shredded it in anger.

“Are you okay Kagome?” Her mom, hearing the frantic outburst from her daughter stuck her head around the open door.

“Oh momma, I can’t go out! My ears!” Kagome said as she flattened them against her head.

“Kagome, put the necklace on. It’s actually a concealment spell.” Her mom said as a smile graced her face. “I can’t believe I forgot to tell you about it.” she turned and left the room.

Kagome picked up the necklace and held it up. Inscribed on the back of the necklace a phrase was written, “Inu Yokai Fight For Life, Inu Yokai Protect With Life, Inu Yokai are Faithful for Life, Inu Yokai Mate For Life.” She read out loud. ‘what about half breeds?’ she wondered. Then she thought back to that day three years ago, when InuYasha claimed his inheritance, The Tetsusaiga.

Flashback

“Sock it to ‘im InuYasha! I think th’ first one hit!” Kagome encouraged him as he attacked his half brother Sesshomaru in his giant dog form.

“What’re you nuts?” InuYasha yelled at her in disbelief “That wasn’t even close!” she shook the dinted and notched sword at her while the giant dog paced behind him.

“But the sword is yours now! All you gotta do is believe in it like I believe in you!” Kagome smiled at him.

“You are nuts! This sword’s good fer nuthin!” InuYasha shouted over the growling of Sesshomaru. “Me, I’ll live, I’m half demon. You tho, you ain’t got a chance.” he told her placing the sword on his back, agitated.

“So I should just… give up hope?” Kagome asked as tears welled up in her eyes.

“Wha? Wh-what’re you doing? You’re not…crying…are you?” InuYasha asked her. Then he yelled, “No cryin’!!”

“Oh should I laugh!?” she shouted right back. Sesshomaru growled fiercer, trying to finish the battle and draw the attention back on him.

“NO!! You should shut up and let me protect you!!” InuYasha yelled as he whirled to face Sesshomaru. He pulled the sword from his back and was amazed as it transformed into the legendary sword of his father.

“Uwa?” was all she could say before Sesshomaru pounced. (Here fluffy, come here, that’s a good dog. Bad fluffy! Bad dog! No eating InuYasha! Sorry Spontaneous outburst hehe umm anywho… on with the show…story….thingy….aww who cares…)

End of Flashback

“Well he was certainly protecting me, so maybe it does apply to hanyous too.” Kagome tilted her head in a very dog like manner as she continued to think. ‘Maybe because we are half, our instincts are stronger. Myoga did say something about InuYasha’s blood being stronger than most demons because he has his father’s demonic blood running through his veins.’ She shrugged her shoulders. She thought back to the times when he turned full demon, her eyes widened as she realized, ‘what seals my blood? If InuYasha has the Tetsusaiga, then what do I have?’ She looked over to her bow, a ancient looking bow carved with the heads of dogs. ‘That may be it. I’ll have to ask mom though, to know for sure.’

‘I just hope InuYasha will accept me this way. He still can’t get over the fact I accept him the way he is, even in his hanyou form. I just love those ears of his.’ She giggled to herself as she inspected her reflection in the mirror. Long black hair tied up in a high ponytail, a snug fitting light blue shirt, ‘I guess I should get new shirts, these are becoming a bit to tight.’ Her pants fit perfectly about her hips and her shoes, ‘I need new shoes too,’ she thought as she looked down at them, covered in mud and grime from her travels in the Feudal era.

“Kagome?” A voice asked at her door. She turned an her mom was standing there, “Your friends are here. Have fun and be safe. I worry about you when InuYasha isn’t around you.”

“Worry?” She echoed as she followed her mom out of her room, turning the light off.

“Yes, he is such a sweet boy. I worry about him too.” Her mom said as she smiled and entered her own bedroom. “Have fun tonight.”

“Good night mom.” Kagome said as she descended the stairs. ‘Even my own mother likes him.’ she stopped as she reached the bottom of the stairs, ‘I love him, don’t I?’ Smiling to herself she saw her three friends sitting on the couch waiting for her.

“Happy Birthday!” They all said at the same time as they stood. They each gave Kagome a hug as they left the house.

**** Back with the Baka****

InuYasha lay next to the tree he had previously shredded and wondered why he had panicked. ‘Lucky for me her senses are so new or she could have smelt the anxiety that covered the book.’ he picked up a piece of bark and flicked away from him, ‘My only question is, will she still accept me, know now what I go through on a daily basis?’

He stood suddenly, “I cannot let what happened to me, happen to her. It would kill her to have so much hate and distrust be targeted at her.” he looked at the ground, “I don’t want her coming back here if it means her warm spirit will break.” he sighed, ‘no matter how much I will miss her.’

“I wish she could love as much as I love her.” InuYasha said as he whipped around a sudden sound.

“My, My, My, InuYasha just admitting he loves our Kagome?” Miroku said as he leisurely leaned against a tree.

With lightening fast speed, InuYasha had Miroku pinned to the tree by his throat, his feet dangling off the ground. “She is MINE!” he growled in a dangerous voice as he eyes bled red. Purple strips were faintly seen on his face. “You will never refer to her as ours! She is MINE and only MINE!” he tossed the monk into the woods and was rewarded with silence, blessed silence. He then cursed as he realized he would have to keep an eye out for the monk until he woke up.

“Damn monk.”
