A Demon? It Changes Everything

In a numb state of shock, Kagome walked swiftly over to the full length mirror that occupied a corner of the massive room. She stopped in front of it, her eyes closed, afraid to see what the mirror would reveal. Hesitantly opening her eyes, Kagome took in the reflection before her, an image she did not recognize.

The first thing that caught her eye was the silver bands of hair that framed her face. The rest of her midnight tresses remained the same, only now they fell in soft waves around her waist. Raising a hand to the newly colored strands of hair she noticed the midnight blue lines on her wrist, two of them, on each hand. Gazing back into the mirror she brought her hand to her check, tracing the line that had appeared there as well. Colored in the same dark hue, she had one on each cheekbone, accenting her cheeks and bringing out the blueness of her eyes. Smiling into the glass as if to confirm a suspicion she found that she had indeed developed fangs and, as she smoothed her back from her face, she also had pointed ears. The markings of an inu youkai she concluded. As astonishing as these new additions were, none of them prepared her for the marking she found on her forehead. There, in etched in gold, she found a star, encompassed by a crescent moon. It was then she realized that the markings on her face and wrists were not unlike those of Sesshoumaru.

What caused this transformation? she wondered as she felt a newfound power hum through her body and a strength she felt an immediate and irresistible urge to test. Walking over to the door with grace and none of her usual clumsiness, she stared at it, contemplating the best way to go about getting out of the room she was locked in. Vividly recalling the times in which she had watched green miasma pour from Sesshoumaru's claws in battle and virtually melt through his opponent, she concentrated on her own claws and placed her hand over the doorknob, hoping to melt it. Her eyes snapped open when she felt a liquid begin to flow out of her fingertips she was surprised to see that it was not the green ooze she had expected, but rather was pink and had a pure aura, much unlike the pure evil one of Sesshoumaru's poison. In fact, she realized, the pink liquid very much resembled the glow the Shikon no Tama held when in her purifying presence.

Perhaps she thought it works like the jewel. Recalling the many times the jewel had acted upon her will to live when threatened with death. It would only work for good, she instantly understood this, she could not kill with this strange new power she found herself owning. But it could certainly help me to escape a room in which I've been locked in against my will. With that thought in mind she closed her eyes and wished, as she had done before with the Shikon no Tama, that the door would open.

The second she had formed her wish, the door flew open with a silent whoosh, opening into an empty hallway.

I did it! She exclaimed in her head, feeling for once in life like a strong and independent woman, instead of the useless child she was in Inu Yasha's presence. As his name flashed through her mind she felt a combination of rage and hurt rush through her veins and as guttural growl erupted from her throat, she felt her vision became marred by a veil of red as she realized she wanted revenge, she wanted Inu Yasha to suffer as she had, and, as a wicked smile touched her face, she now possessed the power to do so.

She was so caught up in her fury and plans for vengeance that she neither felt nor sensed the pink liquid spilling from her outstretched claws. As vivid scenes of Inu Yasha, begging for mercy at her feet played in her head, the liquid surrounded her, encircling her in a haze of pink. Just as she had once had the ability to purify the jewel, this newfound substance purified her, heart and mind. The mists of red cleared from her eyes, her claws retracted, and the menacing growl disappeared, leaving it to echo down the long corridor of the hall. In control once again, the pink aura surrounding her vanished, leaving a stunned and somewhat frightened Kagome in its wake.

What just happened? She wondered in horror. She had never felt such pure unadulterated hate before in her life and it scared her. She had always been the optimist, able to find the silver lining in any situation, and any person. She was forgiving and compassionate. She was not the vengeful demon she had just become. It seemed her new demonic powers came also with demonic feelings. So she thought as she gazed at her hands my miko powers keep me from becoming a demon in full. Comforted by the fact that those intense feelings of hate and rage would never be able to completely overtake her, Kagome focused once again on escaping. Suspecting that her new powers also included a much keener sense of smell, she lifted her nose and sniffed the air, searching for any traces of the scent she knew to belong to Sesshoumaru. She was immediately bombarded by a dozen different scents, rushing at her in one indistinguishable wave. Concentrating further, she began to sort through the different smells finding among them the scents of several lower youkai Hanyous? She absently wondered. The musty smell of books, the crisp purity of water, and the distinct smell of a…human? No, Sesshoumaru hates humans; he wouldn't employ one let alone let one stay in his home. I may have been a human when he brought me here but he wants something from me. I must be wrong. She thought. It didn't matter, among the scents she had not detected the very recognizable scent of Sesshoumaru, she had been close enough to him on enough occasions to know how he smelled. He was like autumn, the freshness and earthy scent that always made her think of falling leaves and bare trees, a time when the flaming hues of red and burnt colors of orange were in their full glory. She had always thought it strange that such an evil demon could possess such a heady and wonderful scent.

Abruptly she realized the turn of her thoughts and shook her head to clear her mind of them. Rushing back into the room, she grabbed the Tetsusagia off the bed and ran down through the empty corridor, which opened into a much larger room with sliding doors on one side, leading into some sort of garden. Wanting to just be outside, Kagome opted to go through the sliding doors, intent on finding out where they led to. As soon as she stepped in the fresh air she noticed two things. One, this place that Sesshoumaru lived was absolutely beautiful. Flowers surrounded her, in every color and every size, adding a vibrancy and beauty to the land she had never seen before. Two, it was not a garden. It was an open field, with the shadow of a forest at its edges. His home was not walled in; it simply sat on a large grassy plateau. Smiling to herself and feeling the first faint stirrings of hope, she realized it would be rather easy to escape. He had not expected her to get out of that room let alone outdoors. She was free. With that ecstatic thought in her mind she began to run towards the forest, noticing that her new demon powers included an inhuman speed which enabled her to reach the forest in mere seconds. She smiled triumphantly at her accomplishments. Her new powers were certainly coming in handy. With that she began her trek through the wild forest, not caring which way she went, as long as it was away from the castle, and away from Sesshoumaru.

As a certain miko made her escape, a powerful demon Lord was patrolling his lands. Sesshoumaru's territory was so vast and so highly coveted that he had to patrol his borders often to ward off any attacks from youkai who desired to possess the power and authority of the Western Lands.

The other Lords dared not attack him. He, Sesshoumaru, was too powerful and too strong. It was not the Lords of the other lands that posed a threat to him; it was the masses of inferior and lowly youkai who ran rampant across the land. Their insatiable thirst for power lent them strength, and their inherent stupidity and ignorance kept them coming at him in droves. It didn't matter how many demons tried to take his land, he would protect it, fight for it, and eventually pass it on to his a son, as his own Father had.

Making one last sweep of the eastern perimeter of his lands, he decided it was about time he headed back to his castle, he had a miko to deal with, and a bond to break. Walking through the front the entrance of his home, his nose immediately picked up a scent which did not belong in a demon's home. It was the smell of magic, powerful magic, and it was coming from the woman's room. Making his way down the long hallway, he stopped in front of her room and the sight that greeted him sent a wave of fury and shock through him.

She was gone his stunned mind registered and she has taken Tetsusagia. Even as he realized these important facts, his keen senses picked up another scent among the room. He could smell the flowers and rain that marked her scent, he could smell the magic, but his nose picked up something else. It was darker, headier, elements that were in stark contrast to her light and pure scent. It was the scent, he realized, of a demon. For once not stopping to analyze the situation, Sesshoumaru simply followed her scent down the hall and through the sliding doors. She must have gone into the forest he thought she's trying to escape. He would not let her. He took to the skies and flew rapidly through the air as he tracked her down.

It took him nearly an hour to locate her. She had gotten far, indicating that she had developed some new powers, one of which included speed. When he found her she was crouched at the edge of a lake, apparently having stopped for a drink of water. Positioning himself on a tree and masking his scent so that she would not detect his presence, he took in the new image of her transformation.

She looked older he thought. Her girlish figure replaced by the soft curves of a woman. The silver strands of hair bringing attention to a face that had already been beautiful, the blue markings on her face making her eyes sparkle and come alive, and the gold symbol on her forehead made her appear somewhat angelic. As he absorbed her transformation he felt a longing deep in his soul, a feeling he had only felt once in his life, the night his mother had taken her life, too tormented and anguished to live on as her mate took another for wife. As a human the miko had certainly been beautiful, but as a demon she was breathtaking. He frowned as the familiar rush of shame did not follow his observations. She was a youkai now, and inu of nature. He did not like this. She was a temptation, a distraction that he could not afford. He only wanted the Tetsusagia, and when he had it he would kill her, kill the woman who had foiled his plans time and time again, kill the woman who stood between him and the one thing he desired most in the world.

Leaping off the branch he was perched on he landed behind her, startling her as she turned around to face him, eyes wide in shock. He reached out and grabbed her by the neck, forcefully closing his hand around the smooth column of skin and drawing blood with his claws.

"So" he started "you have become a demon" he finished as he lifted her off the ground with ease.

"It appears that I have" she responded calmly despite the fact that her feet dangled in the air several feet off the ground. "Are you going to kill me Sesshoumaru? Go ahead and try. You said yourself it was not in your power to do so."

His eyes narrowed as she said this. She was right, he could not kill her, but she should still fear him and it only infuriated him more that she did not. Glancing down at the Tenesiga at his waist, he felt it vibrate and start to glow, as if to warn him not to kill the woman who held now. Tenesiga transformed her he realized. The powerful sword at his side not only revived her but gave her the means to better survive by turning her into a demon. Looking back into the face of the miko imprisoned in his unrelenting grip, he slowly set her back on her feet, but did not remove the pain of his grasp. He watched as she put her hands on his wrist. Foolish girl, you do not have enough strength to remove my hand he thought, barely restraining a smirk. But he was wrong. He felt a searing pain burn through his wrist as a pink glow emanated from her hands. She's purifying me! Abruptly he let go of her, gazing at the deep burns on his hand he was forced to reassess the woman demon before him. She was stronger that he had expected, despite the development of demonic powers, she had still maintained those of a miko. She could purify him. He was stronger, he was faster, but she could hurt him, an ability that very few demons possessed. In a sudden movement he grabbed her wrists, locked them in the iron grip of his hand behind her back, rendering them useless.

"Wench, do not try to escape again. I may not be able to kill you, but I can hurt you, I can make you feel pain so potent that you will beg for death."

Her eyes widened in fear at this statement. Finally, the girl has enough sense to fear me.

"Kagome" she said quietly.

"What?" he questioned in a low growl.

"My name is Kagome, not woman, not miko, not bitch or wench. My name is Kagome." She replied defiantly.

"Do your worst" she bravely challenged him "I have already been through hell"

Seeing the truth reflected in her brilliantly blue eyes and the pain that filled their depths, he covered her mouth with his other hand, releasing only enough poison to put her to sleep. As all the strength left her body, he let her go, letting her fall in a heap on the ground. Grabbing her arm he began to drag her through the forest, taking satisfaction in the petty revenge he was exacting on her as he pulled her through mud and over sharp rocks. Once they reached the castle her threw her unceremoniously into her room and sealed. She would not find escape so easy this time he thought.

Standing outside her door he inhaled her scent which surrounded him. It was intoxicating, it was wonderful, and it tempted him like nothing else ever had. Frowning in anger, he briskly walked down the hall and into his study, determined to begin the long and arduous task of searching through the centuries old books to find the solution to his problem. He needed to break that damn bond, he needed to rid himself of the woman who defied him, of the woman who tempted him.
