Chapter 6: Untouchable
Sango walked by the bedroom door for what seemed like the tenth time. She was worried for Kagome, and she sympathized with the girl. If the same had happened to her, she'd feel like nothing more than a slave. No doubt, she must feel she has lost her freedom. When she heard voices rise from downstairs, she headed that way. 'Inuyasha is going to have some explaining to do!' When the coach had arrived, they barely had any insight as to what was going on. Inuyasha had merely told Kaede that morning that he and Myoga were heading to the auction to bid on Kagome's hand.
In the living area, Miroku sat on one of the couches. Inuyasha was standing in front of the window, peering out at the setting sun.
"Damn it, Miroku! How many times do I have to tell you to leave it be?"
"Not until you can help me make sense of all this." Miroku stated calmly yet firmly.
Sango walked up behind the hanyou and pulled on his ear. "I'll have you know that she's been sitting up in that room weeping all day. She refused lunch and dinner. Do you care to tell mewhythere is a woman so distraught sitting in your bedroom, whom is now wed to you?"
Pulling away from her grasp, he scowled down at her. "I have no need to explain myself to you!" He snapped and turned his attention back to the window.
"You don't have a choice! Kagome is a sweet girl, who has obviously had a difficult life already. Now she is sitting upstairs, in a place alien to her, with folk that she barely knows!" Sango was burning a hole through his back with her glare. "For heaven’s sake, Inuyasha, youboughther and had her dropped off here. How is that better than the situation she was in before?"
Miroku came up behind the steaming woman and ushered her to the couch. "Sit down, Sango. You're going to overexcite yourself." He took the seat beside her and sighed. "Inuyasha, it was already obvious that you are taken with the Lady Kagome. Otherwise I couldn't comprehend at all why you would make such a rash decision as to marry her."
Inuyasha turned and stalked over to them, "Would you rather she were taken by some degenerate who would use her as no better than a bed slave?"
"Of course not, but you see, she has no idea that you are any different than them. Why haven't you told her who you are? She acknowledgesKaneand had placed her trust in you while coming here yesterday." Miroku added thoughtfully, "Surely it would put her at ease knowing you are one in the same."
Inuyasha snorted, "Have you forgotten that our last meeting was when I returned her home? Trust is a frail thing, and I would be highly surprised if she didn't attempt to throttle me." He ran a hand over his face, exasperated.
Sango sighed. "Forget that forsaken disguise. She's wed to you, Inuyasha. It's up to you to be the deserving husband, and having her carted here and leaving everyone in the dark didn't get you off on a good foot."
"Where were you anyway?" Miroku questioned, honestly curious.
"None of your business." Inuyasha had far surpassed frustration with this conversation. "I've had enough of this. It is as it is, and you two are going to have to except that." Before they could bite out a retort, he dashed out of the room. Confident that they wouldn't follow him up to his chamber's wing, he strolled up the stairs and down the hallway. Pausing at the door to listen, he was confident that Kagome was asleep before creeping into the room.
The late afternoon sun settled across her features, brilliantly accenting her beauty. Frowning at her tear streaked cheeks, Inuyasha inwardly sighed. He hadn't the insight to know that she would show back up in his life, and these weren't the pretenses he would have imagined with the possibility. Foremost he pondered where they would go from here. There was a time when Kagome had accepted him as a hanyou. He knew her prejudice was built from tragedy. His faith lay in her heart and its purity beneath the shadows. Kagome was kind and boundless in her compassion. It's impossible for him to believe she had been corrupted with no turning back. As difficult as it was to admit, his own heart depended on it.
For now, all that he could be content with was her safety. Here, he knew no harm would come to her, and she would be taken care of like the lady she was. In the days to come, he would make it his top priority to bring the light back to her eyes, and possibly, even a smile on her face.

Sango knocked softly on the door. Inuyasha had come down, only to send her up to wake her. There seemed to be no end to the confusion. "Come in," was the quiet reply.
"Lady Kagome, dinner is ready. Would you like to join us?" Sango asked hopefully.
"I am hungry," Kagome agreed, although reluctantly.
"It won't be so bad. We all enjoyed your company yesterday." She tried to reassure the girl. Not leaving any room for her to back out, she hurriedly continued. "Since you didn't change into the nightgown, would you like to wear something different for dinner?"
"Hmm?" Kagome stood up from the bed. "What I am wearing should be fine, right?" She took a good look at herself and shook her head. "I guess my dress is a bit disheveled, isn't it?"
Sango nodded, a gentle smile on her lips. Going to the armoire, she pulled out a casual evening gown. It was burgundy in color, with a V-neck, and its length trailed slightly on the ground. A pink sash tied at the waist, completing the fitting display.
“Thank you, the dress is lovely.” Kagome offered the woman a small smile. Sango helped Kagome into it, and she also quickly braided her hair, tying it with a ribbon. "There, you look lovely."
Kagome blushed. "Thank you."
"Here, slip these on, they shouldn't be uncomfortable and would go well with the gown." Sango slid a pair of black dress slippers to where she was standing. Kagome graciously accepted and stepped into them.
Trepidation churned in her stomach as she followed Sango downstairs to the dining hall. Kagome tried to reason with herself that she would have to face the lord eventually and drawing it out would only make her more anxious. Her dread increased as she stepped through the doorway to see that everyone was already seated. All eyes turned to her as they entered, causing her to lower her head.
“‘Tis a pleasure to see you, my child," Kaede greeted her warmly. Pulling out the chair to the right of Inuyasha, who sat at the head of the table, she gestured for Kagome to take a seat. Glancing around nervously, she recognized everyone from her last meal here. The dinner was already spread out upon the table. Inuyasha picked up a plate of sliced meat that smelled deliciously like braised beef. He first gave Kagome her portion, then his own, before passing it to Sango. This went on through dishes of roasted potatoes, steamed carrots, and a basket of rolls. Once everyone had food set before them, Miroku led them in grace. As soon as he finished, the household dug in. Light conversation drifted to her ears, though she remained quiet as she picked daintily at her meal. It tasted great, and she felt immediate relief from her hunger.
"Lady Kagome, perhaps you would like a tour of the estate tomorrow? There is still much you haven't seen," Miroku offered.
"That sounds nice, thank you." Kagome answered, lifting her head to smile at the monk.
"How did you like my gardens, dear?" Kaede inquired.
"Oh, it was lovely! It is so far my favorite, although there is much beauty to be seen here."
"I had my work cut out for me when I arrived here, but the plants have flourished greatly since then."
"You should see the stable! I help take care of that!" Shippou exclaimed.
Kagome smiled at the child, "I'm sure you do a wonderful job, too." He beamed at her compliment. "There are lots of pretty horses. We have cows and goats, too! But they're in the barn."
"Oh my, are there any other animals?" She was put at ease with his carefree excitement.
"Yep!" He counted on his fingers. "Pigs, ducks, chickens-" His face pulled into a scowl, "But watch out for the rooster, he's a bully."
She couldn't help but chuckle, "I'll heed your advice."
"I mean it! That's a wicked one. He attacked me more than once."
"Don't be a wimp," Inuyasha stated. Kagome glanced at the lord, only to see humor in his eyes as he addressed the young youkai.
Shippou balled his little hands into fists, "I'm not a wimp! You have that rooster come flying at you, claws first, and see how you like it!"
"Come on, runt, you can dodge those attacks. If you can't, then I'll have to be even harder on you in training."
Sango decided to stop them before it escalated into an argument. "Maybe you can join Kagome on her tour tomorrow, Shippou."
He puffed out his chest, "Sure I will! I can show her everything!"
Kagome giggled, "Okay, it's a date then."
Inuyasha watched her exchange with the kit and felt his mood lighten. Compared to the anxious and frightened girl who'd entered the dining hall earlier, she had no trace of fear now. Witnessing her smiles and laughter gifted him with hope. If she could become comfortable with the other youkai in his household, then maybe she could open her heart to one as well. He was determined, no matter how many stepping stones it took to get there. Time he had, and time he could give.

Dinner had finished, and Kagome found herself lingering in the living area. Lamps were lit, casting a comfortable glow about the room. Sango and Miroku were engaged with one another over a cup of tea, in front of the fireplace. Kohaku and Shippou had taken off to the stables to make sure the animals were content for the night. Hachi, Kaede, and Toutousai were seated with her on the couches, also enjoying cakes and tea. She had been surprised to find that Toutousai was a youkai as well, for he looked human, even if awkwardly. Her fear had lessoned around the three demons in the manor, as they were anything but hostile towards her. However, no matter how the lord presented himself, she found herself trembling in his presence.
Lord Inuyasha had bowed to her, taking her hand and kissing it while thanking her for joining him for dinner. The moment he touched her, she felt her heart beat faster but resisted the recoil of her hand. Her eyes trained on his nails, which were longer than her own, and most definitely sharper. He radiated power and strength, and she knew it would take nothing for him to end her life. It was that vision that caused her body to quake and her eyes to widen. His brow had furrowed before he excused himself, telling Miroku that he was going for a ride. Even as he left the room, the tension in her body didn't waver. She had followed the group into the other room stiffly, her breathing still uneven. What was she supposed to do if she couldn't even be touched by him without being overcome by fright?
Inuyasha ran from the manor, heading straight to the small arena in the back. He sparred with the wooden dummy until he found it splintered at his feet. Kicking the pieces away, he growled to himself. He had only approached her when he could already sense her fright. Still, he took her shaking hand and kissed the back of her knuckles, in hopes of alleviating her dismay. It apparently made it worse, as she started to quiver all over. He couldn't take it and fled.
How did he come to be so enamored with a woman who can't even stand to be near him?

Night had fallen, and Kagome excused herself for the evening. Heading out to the gardens, she hoped the serene surroundings would calm her. Strolling down the path, she found it was just as beautiful in the moonlight as during the day. Taking her hair from the braid, she let it cascade down her back. Soon finding herself in the center, at the tree, she seated herself on the swing.
Inuyasha sat high in the branches of the time tree, letting the breeze and music of the night ease his frustration. When he'd heard the door open, he watched idly as Kagome entered. She was a sight to behold as she dreamily walked through the flowering plants. The moon's rays basked her in a divine light, making it seem as if she were floating down the stone pathway. Her ebony tresses shone almost blue, settling against her dark gown. Her pale skin glowed, and he thought she looked like an angel, sent down from the heavens to torture him. He stayed still as she approached the trunk, holding his breath when she sat upon the wooden swing. Content to merely watch her, he was surprised to hear a soft melody erupt from her lips. The song was unknown to him, but her voice was pleasing to his ears. In time, her song began to lull him to sleep.
Kagome felt a little better, and although she wished she could stay out here all night, she resolved it was time to go inside. With a heavy sigh, she made her way back into the house. Upon reaching her sleeping chambers, she was relieved to see that the room was empty. Picking up the nightgown from the bed, she shed her dress and slipped it on. Brushing her fingers through her hair, she settled herself under the sheets of the bed. Pushing all thoughts out of her mind, she eventually drifted off into slumber.
x0x
Kagome was startled awake when she felt the bed shift. Clenching the sheets in her hands, she stiffened. It was surely the lord, coming to rest. But before, would he want to consummate their joining? It was within his rights, and who was she to be able to stop him? A leg barely brushed the back of her own, and she involuntarily curled hers closer to her body. When nothing else happened, she breathed a bit easier. But even when it seemed he had fallen asleep, she laid there, staring at the wall in front of her. At some point, she'd managed to fall back asleep, but it was dreamless and light.

The morning sun shone through the windows above the bed. Stretching her arms above her head, Kagome yawned. Glancing quickly about the room, it seemed the lord had already rose for the day. Across the room, draped over an armchair, she found a pair of slim black riding pants and a white button down blouse. A straw sunhat sat on the table next to it. She wasn't used to someone else picking out her clothing for her, but she didn't want to be rude. However, she wanted to wash her face and tie back her hair. She had no idea if there was a bathroom closer than the small one downstairs. Fresh undergarments would also aid in her comfort. The thought of going through the dresser drawers, especially in a room that belonged to a man, made her laugh nervously.
"What am I to do then? Perhaps I should seek out Sango?" A steady knock caused her to jump, and she hurriedly said, "Come in." Smiling widely, she was thankful to see Sango enter the room. "You have impeccable timing! I need your help, if you wouldn't mind?" Kagome asked shyly.
Sango grinned, "Well, I was here this morning to lay out your clothes. I thought you might not know where everything is, so I figured I'd check to see if you were awake." She immediately went to a closed door and opened it. "This is the master bath." She waved Kagome over. Inside the door, there was a space cut out of the wall. On a marble counter lay all sorts of bottles and creams. A small oval mirror hung on the wall above it. "You should find everything you need here to freshen up. There's a window behind you, but if you desire light, there are matches in the drawer to light this candle." She was referring to a short wide yellow candle sitting in a silver dish on the countertop.
Kagome nodded, slightly in awe, as she'd never used so many facial and hand creams in her life. It seemed there were half a dozen different perfumes as well. A large bristled brush and a small crescent shaped comb sat to one side, on top of a matching ivory mirror. Lost in her observation, she didn't realize that Sango was talking to her again. "I'm sorry?"
"I said, this is the bath." Sango was a few feet into the room, pointing to a very large porcelain tub. The room consisted of a toilet, a pedestal sink, and a slightly larger mirror than in the vanity. "In here," she opened a large cupboard, "are the linens. When you're done, there's a basket over there to put them in. We retrieve them daily. You can also place your soiled clothes in there as well." She clapped her hands together once before going back into the main suite. "Okay, the smaller armoire has all your dresses and gowns. The long dresser next to it has all your undergarments and nightwear in the left side drawers. In the closet here," she opened the door, "are blouses and slacks. Shoes are on a rack on the bottom."
"Oh my, I mean... well, where did all of this stuff come from?" Kagome was in shock.
"Kaede was sent into the city to purchase these early yesterday morning. Inuyasha wanted them here when you arrived."
She was speechless, and honestly didn't know what to say, except, "That was very nice of him, um, of both of them."
"We want you to feel as much at home as possible, Lady Kagome." Sango shut all the doors and smiled again. "Well, I'll let you get ready for the day. Don't hesitate to ask if you need any help."
"Thank you. Oh, and Sango?"
"Yes, my Lady?"
"Would it be possible if you, I mean, if everyone could drop the Lady title? It just makes me feel... well, I don't consider myself higher than anyone here. I just like Kagome, if that would be okay?"
"It's custom for us to address you formally, so you must accept my apology. If you prefer to just be called, Kagome, then we will be happy to do so."
"Thank you so much. I hope I didn't come off as rude?"
"Of course not, Kagome." Sango prepared to leave, but then stuck her head back in. "Oh, I nearly forgot. When you come downstairs, feel free to help yourself to breakfast, as everyone has already eaten. We figured that you would like to sleep in. But when you're ready, Inuyasha would like you to meet him outside."
"Meet him?" Kagome swallowed nervously.
"Yes, he's out on the front patio awaiting your arrival."
"O-okay. Thank you, I will meet him as soon as I am dressed."

Kagome clasped her hands tightly in front of her as she walked down the hallway. She returned greeting when everyone bid her good morning. Once she reached the foyer, she froze with her hand on the doorknob. Taking a deep breath, she opened the door. Stepping out onto the porch, she was immediately greeted by Lord Inuyasha.
"Good morning, Kagome. Slept well?"
"Yes, my Lord."
"Oh, please, don't call me that."
Kagome's eyes widened. "I'm sorry."
He grinned at her, showing one of his fangs. "I'm Inuyasha, please. Lord is a political title and is certainly not meant for you."
Kagome nodded, averted her gaze to her brown riding boots. "You wanted to see me?"
"I have something for you, follow me."
She did as she was told, falling into step behind him as he made his way over the yard. They were heading to what looked like the stables. The scent of horses and hay drifted to her nose, and she welcomed the smell. As they entered, Shippou met them excitedly.
"Kagome! Good morning!"
"Good day, Shippou. Early to work, are you?"
"It's almost noon!"
"Oh? I hadn't realized I slept so long," Kagome stated, slightly embarrassed.
"You needed the rest," Inuyasha replied nonchalantly. "Shippou?" He motioned to the side with his head, "Bring her in from the pasture." Shippou nodded enthusiastically, leaving out the back door of the stable.
Kagome kept quiet, not really knowing what to say. She wasn't so naive as to not figure out that this had something to do with a horse. Hehadbrought her out to the stables. However, the thought of another horse made her sad, thinking of her own back home. 'Home.' The term was as foreign to her as the lord next to her. She sighed, her eyes turned downwards. The sound of hooves echoing on the wooden planks brought her attention forefront and she gasped. "Aska!" She hurried to the animal's side, wrapping her slender arms around the mare's neck. Pulling the bridle down, she kissed the Appaloosa's head, rubbing her behind the ears.
Inuyasha was pleased with the small reunion. When he'd left her at the town hall, he had headed to Naraka’s dwelling to await his return. He was met instead with her brother.
x0x Flashback x0x
Inuyasha strode to the doorstep, standing regally next to the door. He was startled when the door opened, and he was greeted civilly by a young man.
"Sir? I mean, Lord Inuyasha, if you're looking for Naraku-"
"I'm aware he isn't home. I was going to wait until his return, but perhaps you can assist me?" Inuyasha watched as the boy visibly swallowed nervously. "I'm here on Kagome's behalf."
"Kagome?" The boy's eyes grew hard. "My sister? What business do you have with her?"
Inuyasha wanted to chuckle, watching his stature shift so quickly from skittish to defensive. "You didn't attend the auction?"
Her brother's fists clenched. "I wasn't going to watch her be degraded by him like that. It's enough I had to stand back and let it happen." He frowned disdainfully. "Do you know who?"
"Who won? That, young sir, would be me." The sudden hatred turned upon him by the young man was shocking. He rose an eyebrow, trying to discern where this confrontation was going to lead.
"You? You bought my sister?" The boy stood straighter, perhaps trying to be more intimidating. "What do you plan to do with her?"
"What's your name, boy?"
"Souta."
"Well, Souta, your sister is in good hands. She will be given every luxury deserving of such a delightful woman."
He eyed him with distrust. "You are aware of her fear of youkai?"
Inuyasha nodded once. "It has been difficult not to notice."
Souta's posture suddenly slackened, and he looked positively frightened. "You aren't going to hurt her are you?" His gaze was pleading.
The lord found himself smiling to reassure the boy. "As long as I am around to make sure of it, no harm will befall her."
Souta's face was clouded in doubt, but he nodded in affirmation regardless. "What can I do for you?"
"I would like to bring her horse, Aska, back to my estate. I would also like any belongings she may find valuable to her." The young man re-entered the house, coming out a few minutes later with a small sack in his hand. Inuyasha took the offered bag. "Thank you. Would you mind assisting me with the mare?"
"Sure. She's a gentle animal, but I'm not sure if she'll let you ride her or not."
"We'll just have to see." Inuyasha smirked.
A half hour later, after much coaching and soothing, Inuyasha had managed to mount the Appaloosa. Patting her neck in what he hoped was a comforting manner, he turned to Souta. "I am pleased with your assistance. You have knowledge of where I reside?"
Souta bowed his head, "I do, Lord Inuyasha."
"Feel free to visit your sister any time."
He looked shocked. "Thank you, my lord."
"Good day, young sir."
"Take care of her for me."
Inuyasha winked at the boy before leading Aska home.
x0x End Flashback x0x
When she turned away from Aska to look at him, his heart leapt as she gifted him with a genuine smile, the first directed at him. Her eyes shown with her happiness as she bowed with a curtsey.
"Thank you, so much, my Lord."
He scolded her gently, "My lord?"
A soft rouge adorned her cheeks and she stammered quietly, "Inuyasha."
Inuyasha stepped forward, grasping both her hands in his. He tried to ignore her flinch. "I took the liberty in collecting a few of your belongings. You will find them in a sack tied to the saddle." He pointed to where it was draped over a wooden bough.
Kagome could hardly contain her joy at the gift he had bestowed upon her. She looked up, meeting his eyes. The warmth radiating from his golden gaze lessened the heavy beating of her heart at their closeness. "How? I mean, did Naraku-"
"No, I had the pleasure of meeting your brother. He helped me gather your possessions."
"Souta? He knows where I am?"
Inuyasha nodded, "Yes, he does. I invited him to come by any time."
Kagome beamed at him, bowing her head again. "Thank you, so very much. You're too kind."
Inuyasha kissed her forehead. "I'm glad that I could bring a smile to your face. Now, go ride." He released her and stepped back. With barely suppressed giddiness, she hoisted the saddle. "Shippou, will you assist her on getting Aska ready? I'm going to see that lunch is being prepared." With that, he turned and left.
Shippou jumped up on a stool and helped her put the saddle on the mare. She led Aska out of the stable and into the pasture. Placing one foot into the stirrup, she swung her leg over and mounted. Looking down at the kitsune, she smiled. "You are so sweet, little one. Thank you for taking such good care of my girl here," she complimented, petting the horse's neck.
His face lit up with delight. "You're welcome! Do you want me to open the fence?"
Kagome nodded, "Yes, that would be wonderful. Thank you." Aska pawed the ground in anticipation of the ride. As soon as the way was clear, Kagome loosened her grip on the reins and clicked her tongue. Soon they were speeding over the hills of the estate. This was her only sense of freedom, and her heart floated, as light as the wind rushing by her.
Inuyasha sat on his wide balcony railing, one leg dangling over the edge, leaning against the side of the manor. He watched Kagome as she cantered back towards the stables. It was so easy to be captivated by her. The breeze threw her hair back, and he could see her eyes closed against the noon sunshine. Her expression was peaceful, happy even. He was proud to have been a part of giving that to her.
x0x
Lunch was short, as everyone was in a hurry to show her around. She was escorted by Miroku, Sango, and of course Shippou. They first headed to the stables, since it was the closest. While Shippou fed and watered the horses, she took a few minutes to give Aska attention before setting her out with the others in the pasture. She hadn't taken the time to see what horses they housed. There were two large Belgians, one a very dark brown with white between his ears and on his hind right leg. The other was a lighter tan, with large patches of white adorning her face and legs. She fell in love with the two Friesians, both onyx and only one with a white diamond on its forehead. Their elegantly long manes and tails were well kept, and she found out that they were the chosen drivers of the carriage. There was also a white Lipizzan mare with her grey colt. Kagome had been curious where the male was, considering all the breeds were paired with both male and female, but she found the mare had been bred with a neighboring stud. Amazed at the number of horses, Shippou told her there was one more, but Inuyasha had taken him out right after eating.
Next, she was dragged into the barn by Shippou's enthusiasm to show her the livestock. There were at least a dozen cattle, three dairy cows who had a pasture separate from the horses. A very temperamental bull had his own fenced in area, apparently kept away from the rest. A half dozen pigs, one male and five female, one of which was expecting it seemed, were in the feeding pens awaiting Shippou's service. There were two goats, both female and a handful of sheep with three lambs, sharing the field with the cattle. Next to the silo outside was a henhouse, home to seven hens and one rooster. He didn't seem as bad as the kit had made him out to be until they got closer to the pen. Kagome stifled a giggle as the kitsune fought him off in all his bravery to feed the chickens. She had to give him credit, he came out of it with only a couple minor scratches. In a separate pen were two turkeys. 'Is there an animal they don't have?' Once all were taken care of, as all three had helped the young youkai, they were on their way.
Passing the shrine, they strolled around the pond, where Kagome wasn't so surprised to see ducks on the water. There was a pair of geese nesting in the high grass on the far side, but they made an effort to steer clear of them.
"There's all kinds of fish in there," Shippou announced happily. "If you want, we could catch them sometime! We haven't had fish in a while."
"I don't believe I've ever caught a fish," Kagome replied, trying to peer through the water to catch a glimpse.
"It'll be fun! I'll help you dig up worms and everything!"
Kagome made a face, but smiled at him none the less. "We will have to do that sometime."
Heading towards the small village, Kagome was greeted warmly by the folk who lived there. They seemed happy to have a Lady and showered her with respect and admiration. It warmed her heart to see so many families well taken care of. There were many children. Older girls were helping their mothers with chores, while the older boys followed in their fathers’ shadows in task. Younger children were playing with each other, running across the grounds chasing one another. A few had a ball, which they were kicking to and fro. One house they came upon had three children, two young boys and a slightly older girl. They were huddled around a bay retriever who was lying in a large box outside under the patio roof.
Sango ruffled one of the boy’s hair and spoke to the girl, "Elissa, how are the puppies doing?"
"They're getting really big. Mama said they can be weaned now, so we can find them good homes. Do you want one?"
"I don't know if Inuyasha will want a dog running around the house," Sango grinned. Miroku coughed, chuckling to himself.
Kagome stooped down, patting the mother on the head. "You're a lovely girl, aren't you? And such a good mother." She rubbed behind her ears for a while. "Can I see one of your babies?" Slowly lowering her hand, she picked up one of the pups when she was met with only happy panting. The one she held was smaller than the rest, the runt of the litter, but still healthy. Her coat was just like her mother's, although she was quite a bit fluffier. Nuzzling the puppy's pink nose, she brought the animal to her chest to rub its belly. "Aww, she's adorable. They all are. You have done well, helping her take care of her litter." She praised the children kindly.
"I bet Lord Inuyasha would let you keep her," the youngest of the boys commented.
"Oh, I don't want to impose on his hospitality by bringing an animal home."
Miroku and Sango watched her handle the pup and smirked at one another. "I don't believe he could deny you what you want, my Lady," Miroku said certainly.
"I couldn't," Kagome stated softly, setting the small bundle back with her mother.
From there, they circled the property, sending greetings in return to villagers. Once they reached the back of the manse, she could see the vast vegetable garden and vineyards beyond. They walked along the garden wall, which expanded the entire length of the manor. Ivy grew up the stones, adding to its charm. She could see the branches of Goshinboku reaching out of its lush home and into the sky above. It was now later in the afternoon, and Sango excused herself to help with the chores before dinner.
"Shippou, shouldn't you be bringing the animals in soon?" Miroku asked.
The young youkai's face fell slightly, and he sighed. "Yeah, I guess."
"Thank you for showing me around, Shippou. Your expertise made it a wonderful afternoon." Kagome acclaimed.
"You bet!" He took off, in a hurry to get his deeds done.
Kagome laughed freely and bowed her head to Miroku. "You are all so kind. I really love everything I saw today. There's a lot of work to be done, though isn't there?"
"We all help one another so that no one is overburdened. The work is reasonable enough, as we all have food in our stomachs and a roof over our head. If anything, we're thankful for our positions here, as we could be much worse off."
Kagome followed him around the side of the house and up the front porch. "The household is so diverse, yet you fit the picture of family better than some. I don't believe any of you would have it any other way."
"You are quite right, my Lady." He opened the door for her and motioned for her to enter first.

Kagome ascended the stairs after her walk in the gardens. It was sure to become a nightly ritual to encompass herself in its serenity. Once reaching the bedroom, she started to prepare for sleep when the thought of a bath lured her into the washroom. Pulling two fresh towels from the cupboard, she set them on the floor by the claw foot tub. Putting the stopper in place, she started the hot water and then the cold after a moment. While she waited, she looked about the room. She had placed the sack sent by her brother on the vanity, and now she picked it up, untying the sash. With a smile, Kagome emptied its contents one by one on the table. Fingering her mother's brooch, she brought it to her lips and kissed it softly. It was a beautiful silver winged nymph sitting upon ivory petals and holding a tiny glass dewdrop. Setting it aside the picture of her parents when they were first married, she picked up the small tattered book. Her father would read to her and Souta and this was their favorite story. A single tear trailed down her face as she remembered those nights sitting on his lap in front of the fireplace. After he passed, she had read it over and over again, each time she could hear his voice echoing in her memory.
The bath was nearly full, and Kagome hurried to turn off the faucets. Removing her clothes, she placed them in the basket. After testing the water and finding it satisfactory, she eased herself into the tub and immediately sighed in contentment.
Inuyasha leapt the balcony, opened the French doors and strode into his chambers. Catching sight of his bride as she lounged in the bath, he halted his steps and held his breath. Her long hair cascaded over the edge, barely touching the floor. Her eyes were closed, and the dim light of the lamps flickered tauntingly over her glistening skin. Letting out his breath slowly, he took deep steady gulps to calm his desire. So surreal and completely untouchable, and he wanted her more for it.
How long he stood there taking in her beauty, he had no idea. Kagome stood up, droplets of water cascading down her backside. His groin tightened, but he swallowed his groan as she turned around and their eyes met.
