Chapter 6: An Unexpected Insight
Inu-tachi quickly made its way across the bloody battlefield to where Sesshomaru was still throwing himself into the barrier that surronded Kagome. His scarlet eyes giving testament to the rage he was feeling at not being able to break through. Inuyasha and Shippo were in similar straits as they to could smell the large amount of Kagome's blood that was soaking the ground. The hanyou made his way to his brothers side to try and help him force his way into the barrier as the monk and the taijya tried to comfort the now wailing kit.
was beside himself. He had seen his best friend fall to the claws of the tiger youkai. He could smell her blood seeping through the barrier. Some part of his mind acknowledged the fact that with this heavy of a blood loss that there was no way that Kagome could survive. Obviously the barrier was placed around her to insure her death. The thought tripled his rage for his friend. How would he get on without her. She was everything to him weather she knew it or not. She gave her love to him unconditionally. It did not matter what form he was in human, hanyou or demon. He could be sweet or an utter ass and she still cared. Oh he knew that at first she thought that she loved him as a woman would love her mate and over time she had let this feeling go. He was happy for this but also saddened. He loved her but was unsure of his true feelings. Did he love her for herself or just because she looked so much like his lost love. This question haunted many of his nights.
it changed. Seemingly overnight she went from touching him and hanging on him sharing her love to this new more grown up girl. Now she treated him as a brother. She still touched him but now it was rare and she hid more things form him not being as open. He could sense that she was hiding a big secret from him. He assumed that it was her training her miko abilities as the group could tell that she was getting much stronger. Now he was not so sure that this was the secret. No his brother must be the big secret.
had looked up to see his brother entering the battlefield at the same moment he saw Kagome in peril. This would not have shocked him over the fact that Sesshomaru only had eyes for Kagome. As the great lord saw the young miko fall his eyes bled a firey scarlet as a fierce snarl that turned into a howl of her name was torn from his vocal cords. Inuyasha did not think that his half brother even realized that he stopped to voice his cry before he was streaking to the fallen miko's side. He realized that in some form his half brother cared for his friend and was trying desperately to get to her fallen form. He wondered when his cold emotionless brother could have had time to form an attachment of this depth. They must have been seeing each other for some time to achieve this level of feeling. His brothers rage was something to behold. The aura surronding him was violently swirling in a mix of deep emotions. It made the fine hairs all over Inuyasha's body stand on end and caused a knot of fear to start to form in his gut.

Mere minutes had passed since the barrier had sprang up but all knew that these minutes spelled doom. One by one as the minutes passed they all fell away. Miroku comforting Sango and Shippou as Inuyasha collapsed beside Kirara to watch Sesshomaru continue to vent himself. Finally with a howl of primal defeat the great tai-youkai fell to his knees in the gore surronding him. His head was bowed as his shoulders heaved from his exertions in trying to contain himself. All the others looked over at his cry taking a good look at his shuddering form. Different emotions passing over each face as varied thoughts ran through each mind. But all came back to the same thing.

seemed that this thought had barely crossed the minds of all those present when suddenly there was a faint burst of light and with a sound like the tinkling of broken glass the barrier was gone. Before any of the inu-tachi could move Sesshomaru was already at Kagome's side tensaiga in hand poised to strike. With a graceful downward and across slice he passed the sword across her still body. As the others reached the western lords side they all held their breath waiting to see if the healing powers of tensaiga could really save their friend.
