Recap:
“Nee-chan” A deep and frightened voice reached her ears, scattering the memory of one of her many training sessions with Sesshoumaru and identifying her opponent as a male. Then she realized, he had called her sister……………
From Demons to Dementors
“Kagome-nee-chan, is that you?” the voice asked again, this time more hopeful. Kagome recognized the voice and dropped her knife to the damp ground.
“Souta-kun…?” Kagome questioned. She was unsure if he was indeed as real as he sounded. The teenage boy now known as Souta whipped around and tackled Kagome in a huge bear hug.
“It is you! Oh, Kagome-nee-chan, they thought you were dead, they gave up all hope! But I knew you would return to us, and I was right!” he sobbed into her chest. Kagome uncomfortably patted his back, not quite sure how to calm him. `It has been so long since I have been touched, but why isn't he disgusted? Why would he touch me? …wait……that's right…he wasn't there…he didn't witness it…he doesn't know,' she sorrowfully detached herself from his embrace.
`I had no idea Souta would react like this; he never cries in front of me! And he said he was the only one who still held hope of my return… I didn't want to hurt them, not like this……Oh, Souta; can you ever forgive me for all the time that is lost…? I'm so sorry……' Kagome's mind raced as she attempted to form words, only to find that her mouth had become bone-dry. `I've lost track of time again,' she flinched.
“Oh, Souta…I'm sorry I've been gone so long…It just took far longer than we believed it would……some things came up that I had no power over……I'm so sorry…” she murmured soothingly as she ran her fingers through his shoulder length hair. `It's better that he believes I was safe all this time, that those horrible things never happened.'
“But you're back now, right? You're going to stay here for good!” he desperately asked, fearful that she might disappear again.
“Yes, Souta, I will stay here for as long as time permits……that is…if you'll have me,” she whispered softly as Souta sighed in relief. Mentally though, she was wondering if she could keep that promise.
“Oi, Souta?” she questioned.
“Hai, Nee-chan?” Souta turned to face his beloved sister.
“Have you grown, or did I shrink?” Kagome smirked as she took in the strong build of her younger brother and looked him in the eye. Souta snorted and then broke out into an exceedingly loud laugh.
“I'm fifteen now, so of course I am almost as tall as you. Surely you didn't think you could be taller than me forever, ne?”
“No…truthfully, I didn't” Kagome smiled cheerlessly as she listened with half an ear to her brother chattering on about how much he had progressed when she was away in the past.
`How much of the lives of my family have I missed? I can barely believe Souta is fifteen now…fifteen… I was only fifteen when I first fell down the well... How long ago was that?' She pondered as Souta flexed his muscles in her face. She giggled softly at his expense.
`Oh, Souta, I have missed you so,' she sighed.
`She looks so much older now,' Souta considered as he watched his sister chuckle softly, almost too gently to hear. `And it's not just the age difference between us, it's her eyes, her hands and just the way she moves. Her eyes are old and full of wisdom; they are the eyes of someone who has see hardships, things that humans these days should never and have never seen. Her hands… Her hands are trained and deadly…Damn I'm going to have to tone down the pranks,' he absentmindedly rubbed his neck. `You can tell just by looking at her that she would rather have some type of weapon in her hands than a cell phone.'
Oh, how he had missed his elder sister.
Kagome stood up and stepped to her fallen knife and sighed. `I'm going to give him some sort of complex if this keeps up… I hope he won't see too much I cannot let him become involved in my problems… or my curse…' she decided as she wiped the blade clean of the dirt and grass it had collected during its fall. She put it back into its hidden sheath on her outfit and watched Souta's eyes widen the blade disappeared.
“How did you do that!?” he demanded, shocked and slightly bemused.
“It's a secret…” she grinned.
“Aww, come on Nee-chan! You can tell me…” he prodded, but Kagome just shook her head.
“You suck, you know that?” he sulked but his expression brightened when he remembered all the payback he was going to bestow upon her for being absent for so long.
Kagome glanced up at the Goshinboku with longing and then stared straight at Souta. She recognized the look of revenge Souta was giving her, but he immediately pushed it down so he would not to clue her in to his mischievous plans. Then he smiled evilly, almost sadistically, and wrapped an arm around her shoulders, leading her away from the ancient god tree.
“How do you like the idea of scaring the pants off of Okaa-san, oh long lost sister of mine?” he prompted. Kagome just smirked and muttered, “Ji-chan will probably have a heart attack.” They both laughed; Souta's was loud and lively, Kagome's was soft and semi-amused.
“Come on!” Souta started to run back into their home, dragging the oldest Higurashi alive with him.
`I wonder what he would think if he knew his sister was the first of the Higurashi line. The first Higurashi to ever live… and she who will be the last one to die ……the line begins and ends with this Kagome………the beautiful, disgusting, broken miko.'
