Six Years Later.
Somewhere in the United States
“I'm telling you, bent space-time is the only way this will even be feasible.”
“Impossible. You know how much energy that would require bending space to shoot even a data stream through? Astronomical! We aren't even talking about data streams! We are talking about spaceships!”
“I don't see you coming up with any good ideas.”
“My light speed idea could—“
“You tell me MY idea is bad and yet you start sputtering crap like that. Going light speed is impossible. Things become more massive the closer you get. The more massive something is, the more fuel it needs to move it, the more fuel, the more mass, etc. It's a never ending cycle. Besides, everyone knows the problems with relativity. It may take ten years there and back for someone inside the spacecraft, but what good is it getting back and everyone you know is dead? For my idea—“
“Which is seriously flawed, you still haven't explained where you are going to get the power.”
“Doctor Claget is on the verge of his research—“
“Doctor Claget is a quack. There is no such thing as Claget Particles. He's wasting his time and my money.”
“He convinced the Aura Project Council for the funding.”
“Dangle a banana in front of those monkeys and they will dance for anyone.”
“He's convinced the particles exist. If he can harness them, we are talking about limitless amounts of energy from a generator the size of the average refrigerator.”
“Of course he's convinced. He's crazy. Besides, have you seen his math?!”
“It looked in order to me.”
“Why is that not surprising?”
“What are you trying to tell me?”
“That you're a retard who can't do basic math!”
“Basic math—You ungrateful—Who the hell was it that taught you math?”
“The apprentice surpasses the master, it's an inevitable truth.”
“You son-of-a—“
“INUYASHA!” Kagome's voice from the top of the stairs caused Inuyasha to freeze. Slowly, he looked over from the chalkboard and smiled sweetly at her.
“Yes sweetie?” he said, trying to sugar coat his voice as much as he could.
“You weren't about to say what I thought you were to that poor child.”
Shippo smiled sweetly up at Inuyasha, causing Inuyasha's smile to slip a little. Cheeky little bastard…
“Of course not dear, we were just discussing—“
She waved her hands before he could start on his longwinded explanation. “Don't want to hear it! I won't even begin to understand.”
“It's not that difficult if you would take the time—“
“Nope! Not listening!” She shook her head. “But, what I will listen to is your excuse as to why you are down there and not getting ready.”
He frowned. I still have an hour right? He looked down at his watch, his face paling. He had an hour left… an hour and a half ago. Shit. He smiled up at Kagome. “Work?”
Hands on her hips, she wasn't impressed by it. “You do enough of that.” Her expression softened when she looked over at Shippo. “Sorry dear, but I'm going to have to steal him away from you.”
“Oh, that's okay Mrs. Saito. We were about finished anyways.”
Damn that little bastard! That sweet talk isn't going to win you any points!
“I have some candy for you up here you can eat on your way home.” As Shippo moved towards the stares, he looked over his shoulder. A she-likes-me-better smile forming. From this angle, it was impossible for anyone other than Inuyasha to see. I'm going to kill you kid… Fuming, Inuyasha watched as the thirteen year old boy ran up the stairs to where Kagome stood. “As for you,” Kagome said, her tone changing completely. “I expect you in the car in five.”

Inuyasha grumbled as he got into the large black SUV, Kagome getting into the passenger side. He hated driving the obsolete monstrosity, preferring his smaller, more comfortable hydrogen car that everyone in Aura owned. Unfortunately, the hydrogen cars weren't allowed outside of the city limits.
Starting the SUV, he pushed it into gear and guided it onto the road. Almost immediately, three other identical cars began following him. He had told them it wasn't necessary, but Aura was very cautious of its employees.
For forty minutes, he drove in silence. There was only one heavily forested, windy road in and out of Aura. For many reasons, it was out in the middle of nowhere, the nearest population grouping of worth being an hour away. Looking over, he saw Kagome leaning against her door, gazing out the passenger window at the trees as they sped by. Her hands were in her lap, unconsciously spinning the small ring on her finger.
“Nervous?” he asked, smiling over at her. She looked over at him, quickly coming out of whatever thoughts she had been thinking. Following his gaze, she looked down at her lap where she had been playing with the ring. Pulling her hands apart, she rested them on her legs.
“That obvious?” she asked, smiling.
“Relax, it will be okay.” She nodded.
“I know… but still…” She looked down at the ring. “We haven't seen them since the wedding.”
“If it will make you feel better, you can take it off. You won't hurt my feelings. Promise.”
She shook her head. “No, I'll keep it on.”
Hearing her say that made him feel better.
Ten minutes later, he slowed the SUV, pulling it into a gravel parking lot at the front of a small, diner. The SUV's following him quickly followed. Taking a deep breath, he exited the vehicle, the gravel crunching under his feet as he moved over to Kagome. Together, they began walking towards the entrance. Two men wearing black suits followed them. The rest would stay outside.
No one else was in the diner besides the two couples. It wasn't unexpected. The diner didn't actually have regular customers, not this far away from town. The waitress and cook were really Aura employees. Not genius' but just regular people placed there in order to provide an advance lookout for intruders who happened to wander down the road.
Moving to the far end of the diner, they approached the only customers there who stood as they approached. There was an awkward pause at the two couples sized one another up. Suddenly, the woman on the other side sprang forward, wrapping Kagome in a hug.
“Kagome!” she said ecstatically.
“Sango!” Kagome said, returning the hug. Pulling away, Kagome looked her over again. “You're pregnant… again. Congratulations!”
“Thank you. There is much less stress when it's planned.” Sango glared over her shoulder at her smiling husband.
“What can I say? I have good aim.” Miroku looked over at Inuyasha. “And look at you. Mr. Government Scientist!” He glanced over Inuyasha's shoulders at the men in suits. “Doing well for yourself?”
Inuyasha nodded, smiling at the sight of his friend. “You know me, keeping busy.”
Miroku gave Kagome a sideways glance. “Uh huh, I'm sure you have.” Inuyasha was relieved by how well the reunion was going. The last time they had seen each other was at Miroku and Sango's wedding. It had been difficult for Inuyasha and Kagome to go back to Japan. In four years, Japan had become a primitive, alien world to them. At the time, Miroku and Sango had no idea how much had changed. Kagome and Inuyasha may have been siblings in Japan, but not in Aura. The only difference on Kagome's birth certificate was that she was a single child. Inuyasha on the other hand, was given a new identity. The people at Aura took no chances. Inuyasha had been forced to memorize books of his fake life before Aura and relentlessly grilled on information about it until they were satisfied that it sounded like he had actually lived it. For all intents and purposes, Inuyasha had a non-existent family living happily in northern California and he could tell countless stories about them.
But it wouldn't work on Miroku and Sango. They knew the truth of their past. It was Kagome who wanted them to know. After the wedding reception and before they parted, she spilled everything before the shocked newlyweds. It was an awkward parting that led to two years of very basic `how are you doing?' messages. It wasn't until recently that they received a surprise message saying that they were going on vacation in the States and wanted to meet.
“Oh. This is Kenji,” Sango said, moving aside to reveal a small boy who was shying behind her. “Kenji, say `hi.'” The boy retreated back behind his mother, peeking out to stare at Kagome. “Sorry, he's a little shy.”
“So cute!” Kagome said, bending down to the boy's level. She smiled sweetly at him, making him hide back behind his mother.
“Just wait till you see the photos! Miroku is quite the photographer. It's out in the car if you want to see it.”
“Of course!” Kagome said, standing up. Inuyasha watched as the two women left the dinner, Kenji in his mother's arms.
“I honestly thought you weren't going to want to see us again,” Inuyasha said, looking back over at Miroku. The both took a seat in the booth, the waitress coming over to take their drink orders. After ordering, she quickly retreated, leaving them in peace.
“Well, we were certainly surprised to say the least. You gave us one hell of a wedding memory.” Inuyasha smiled.
“Sorry about that.” Miroku shook his head.
“Now, for the record, I was okay with it. It was Sango who took awhile to bring around.”
“How are our parents doing?”
Miroku's smile faded a little. One of the casualties of their relationship had been their parents. There was only so much you could explain by mail. They had yet to send a reply.
“Good, good. I told them I was going to meet up with the two of you.”
“And?” Inuyasha felt a little surge of hope. Miroku pulled a small envelope from his pocket.
“It's from your mother. Neither one of them had the courage to send anything, but your mother hinted at me to give this to you.” Inuyasha took it, fighting back tears. He would have to read it with Kagome.
“Thanks,” he said softly.
“No problem.” Inuyasha shifted to a happier topic.
“So… you are having another one.”
Miroku smiled. “Yeah, I want to have a giant family. The problem is trying to convince Sango we can afford it.”
Inuyasha nodded. Miroku had partnered with someone in their old high school and opened their own business. Last he heard, the business wasn't doing amazing, but it was paying the bills with a little left over.
“If you need it, I'm always here to help.” Together, Inuyasha and Kagome's income equaled a little less than twenty thousand a year, which was a small fortune to them considering everything in Aura was free.
“Thanks, but we should be okay. We are planning to open up a couple more shops since business is slowly picking up as our name gets around.” Miroku paused as the waitress returned with their drinks. Thanking her, he watched as she left. “What about you? If I didn't know better, I could have sworn Kagome was eyeing to steal Kenji for her own.”
Inuyasha laughed. “You better watch or she just might.” He sighed. “I don't know. I've been really busy with work. I don't think I have the time to be a father.” It wasn't totally true. Inuyasha knew that Kagome wanted a family and he wasn't opposed to it. It was a little worrisome though. With the frequency they made love, he would have expected at least a couple kids by now, especially since they never bothered with protection.
Miroku nodded in understanding. “It takes a lot of time. I'll be just a phone call away though if you need any tips, especially bedroom ones.”
Inuyasha rolled his eyes. Some things never change. Miroku did most of the talking, telling funny horror stories of dealing with stubborn customers or business troubles. It was a little sad that Inuyasha couldn't tell anything about what he had been doing. Inventions and theoretical breakthroughs he had helped spearhead. How he was leading the team that would send the first human object beyond the solar system. Miroku didn't comment on how Inuyasha didn't share any stories of his own, nor did he seem to care.
Inuyasha smiled, taking in everything his friend had to say. Listening to the worries of a normal man in a normal life was a refreshing change of pace. His life wasn't perfect. There were still many obstacles that littered the path, but he didn't mind. He was happy where life had taken him and was looking forward to seeing what the future held.
********************************************
“You doing okay?” Sango asked, eyeing Kagome as they flipped through the photo book.
“Hmm?” Kagome asked, looking over at her friend.
“You know…” She shifted uncomfortably, glancing down at the ring on Kagome's finger.
“Oh… yeah… of course I am.” She held up the ring. “It's just for show really. We never had a wedding.”
Sango looked surprise. “You didn't?” Kagome shook her head.
“We didn't think anyone would come.” Sango pressed her lips together, looking down at the photos.
“I would have,” she said softly. Kagome smiled.
“Don't get so depressed! It's okay, really. I'm perfectly happy with my life.” It was one hell of a struggle getting to this point though… It had taken her two years before she could return Inuyasha's feelings. Now, they acted like any other normal couple. Fighting… laughing… intimacy… everything came naturally with no baggage feelings.
Sango shifted Kenji in her arms. “Are you two allowed to have kids?”
Kagome looked up at her in surprise. “Why wouldn't we be?”
Sango raised an eyebrow. “Do you really want me to say it?”
“Ah,” Kagome blushed. Sango didn't know everything about Inuyasha's situation. He was her brother, yes, but at the same time, he wasn't totally her brother, thanks to two other's DNA embedded inside him. Kagome rested her hands on her lower stomach. “We better be, or else we are going to be in a lot of trouble.”
Sango's eyes widened. “You aren't—“
Kagome nodded, smiling.
“Have you told him?”
Kagome shook her head. “I don't want to tell him yet.” She was still waiting for the DNA scan to come back. Aura was an amazing place. Even though she had found out she was pregnant only a couple of days ago, a quick visit to the doctor and a small sample of the child's DNA was sent to a lab to check if there were any diseases, birth defects or any other problem could be found. Normally, it would take until the fetus was fairly developed. Even better, if anything showed up, it was standard practice to correct them and with over eighteen years of perfecting the process, it was not only painless, but safe for both the mother and child.
Even though he doesn't like his real past, because our parents work, his child, and other children at Aura are all benefiting.
Sango smiled. “I'm really glad you're happy.”
Kagome smiled as well, looking towards the diner where Inuyasha was. The only thing that made her happier was the knowledge that it was only beginning.
