Goin' Under
Chapter Four~*
I'm With You~*
"Miss Higurashi had slit her wrist before the crash took place." Sota looked questioningly around the now stack still, silent elder people surrounding him.
Kagome's mind was buzzing. My mother? She was fearless…how… did this happen? Inuyasha squeezed her hand as he noticed her wide-eyed sad expression.
Without a second thought Kagome got up and dashed out of the police department silently. Flinging the heavy metal doors open, she ran along the wide empty sidewalk. Tears streamed down her cheeks unattended and scattered into the wind that so wildly shoved her hair away from her face. Another gust of wind her black unbuttoned trench coat to uncover her cargo-clad legs.
Shivering in the now light breeze Kagome started to slow down nearing her destination. Silent sobs wracked her body but she kept pumping her legs to get her farther.
Kagome stopped as she reached a large bridge stretching over the rushing river resting hundreds of feet below her aching feet.
Crying softly Kagome tried to think of a logical reason for her mother to commit suicide like she did. Discovering reason after reason, each becoming more and more based on Kagome and getting more ridiculus too, she recalled what had happened the weekend before the accident. She settled on a couple chosen moments that she and her mother had `shared'. But one stuck out from the rest.
^Flashback^
"I DON"T CARE YOU LITTLE BITCH!!" The voice rang in Kagome's ears.
"That's too bad…" Kagome's face was a mask of calm and patience while behind the mask, she was holding back tears.
"I AM NOT GONNA HAVE YOU PRNACING AROUND HERE LIKE A LITTLE GIRL!! ALL RIGHT!!!" Her mother's clenched fists were white and her face was red with red with fury.
"WHY DO CARE...HUH!!" She'd had enough, "You got Sota… I mean…" she hesitated. "Why do you need me at all? And I still pass off as a boy at school, when I'm noticed. And even Sota thinks I should act more like a teenage girl. But hell if you care."
"WHY SHOULDN'T I?" rage was taking over and fear was showing on the face behind her dull mask. `YOU'RE MY FUCKING DAUGHTER AND YOU WILL FOLLOW ALL OF MY RULES WHETHER YOU LIKE THEM OR NOT!! GOT IT!!"
Keeping the almost monotonous tone in place Kagome responded, "I think you're blowing this way out of proportion. It was just capris."
"WHICH I BANNED LONG AGO!!"
"YOU HAVE SOTA!! SO LEAVE ME TO BE WHO I WANT TO FUCKING BE." She spotted a ruffle of raven hair sticking out from behind the staircase. Poor Sota. Thought Kagome.
"That is it." Ms. Higurashi gripped her pink knee-length jacket in her white knuckled hand. "You can't even appreciate that I let you live with this family." She sighed. "But if I didn't, then you'd probably get me figured out and put in jail." She seemed as though she thought she was unaccompanied in the room as she said the last part.
^END Flashback^
Her mother had left that night, Sunday night. She hadn't come back but Kagome had assumed that she was at a bar or club like usual. But the next morning her mother was dead.
"I…I'm the…reason." She stared down at her hands as thought they were stained with blood. Her frightened gaze shifted to the rushing water flowing beneath her.
Something cold and wet hit her already moist face. All around her the pitter-patter of raindrops crashing into the concrete of the bridge was heard. Kagome slouched onto her knees, then sat completely on the rain-slicked surface of the concrete. After what seemed like hours she heaved herself up and walked slowly towards the pole protruding from the bridge's edge. Leaning heavily on the rail and staring once again transfixed at the waters below, Kagome seemed to come to a decision.
The harsh winds whipped wet tendrils of midnight hair in Kagome's pale red-eyed face. She gripped the wide metal pole with both of her hands. Thankful for the flat-topped rail Kagome stepped onto it trying to keep her balance and grip the slippery pole as well.
"Huh?" A blinding light surrounded her and she blinked her eyes profusely to try and adjust. But before she could, the light was gone, replaced with the surrounding darkness. Faintly she heard a voice but the thrashing wind and rain were affecting her hearing.
"Kagome!" The faint whisper previously was now much more dominate of the winds. She turned her head slightly and caught the silver glint from behind her. Facing back to the river beneath her she whispered to herself. "It was me…" then with out warning she started shouting. "Go away! Just leave me alone!"
Something warm wrapped around her wrist. "I said…Go away. Now Inuyasha." She was whispering again knowing that the hanyou could hear her. Her determined voice startled Inuyasha to say the least. What the hell did she think she was doing?
"I'm not leaving unless you get into the car. Kagome." The girl was silent as she stood stock still staring at the wobbly reflection of the quarter moon on the river's surface. Kagome then stepped down, but she didn't fool the advanced sighted half demon gripping her wrist firmly.
"On my side of the railing." She seemed oblivious to his demand as her right foot followed her left onto the thin strip of bridge left. "Kagome."
The silence enveloping them seemed deafening. "Why?' Kagome's voice was almost lost on the relenting winds.
"Because you need to be there for your brother, and your grandfather probably would like you there for help." Suddenly Inuyasha sounded very smart (WHATEVER!).
"They don't really care," Kagome moved forward but Inuyasha's arm around her arms and body stopped her. Her questioning gaze directed at him, "Why do you care anyway?"
"What do you " The question was cut off by a roaring car screeching to a halt adjacent to Inuyasha's Ferrari. Both heads turned simultaneously as a tall silver-haired walked calmly towards the couple.
"Inuyasha?" The male voice that reached Kagome was monotonous and as the figure came into view she saw his expressionless face.
"What do you want Sesshomaru?" Inuyasha spat out the name his voice almost dripping with poison. Sesshomaru observed the seen before him. Surprise was showing clearly in his eyes.
"Mitsuko said to take you home." Inuyasha just glared at him when a whimper sounded beside him. Blood trailed in several trails down Kagome's slender arm. Drawing is hand from Kagome, Inuyasha stood and turned to his half brother.
"I ain't going home, Okay!" A hurt expression made its way, along with disgust, to his face.
Sesshomaru's mouth twisted into a smirk. "Why not? Afraid of what else father may be hiding from you?" Inuyasha snarled revealing his fangs. He started to work on an insult when he noticed where Sesshomaru's attention was focused.
Turing to look behind him as well, Inuyasha gasped when he saw Kagome. Her trench coat lying forgotten on his side of the railing. She looked back at the hanyou teenager. Smiling sadly she turned around staring down at what could decide her fate.
Deciding she had stalled enough, Kagome stepped forward.
"NOOOOOOOOOOOO!"
