Chapter 9 The Mark

“What does the council want with you?” Kagome asked in a panic. Inuyasha gripped the steering wheel like a vice.

“They were informed about the ‘little incident’ from last night with Koga and they call my house this morning.” He told her. Kagome heard her heart pounding in her ears.

“So what does this mean?” She asked franticly. “You shouldn’t be in trouble, it should be Koga right? He was the one trying to harm me!” She tried to reason with herself.

“Apparently, Koga wasn’t alone last night. He had members of his pack watching in case he signaled for them to help. Or, at least that’s what he said. I didn’t feel any other presences last night.” Inuyasha told her. Kagome felt her face get hot from anger.

“What?! That rotten dirt bag! He had better not be lying to the council! Just to get back at…” She cut her rant short when this thought crossed her mind. ‘It’s my fault Inuyasha is going to get into trouble!’ Her mind screamed. Tears began to fill her stormy blue eyes. Inuyasha smelt the salty tears and knew exactly what she was thinking.

“This isn’t your fault.” He said. She turned to him with wide eyes. “You had no idea about our world and you couldn’t have done anything to prevent this. I’m just glad that I got to you before he could have hurt you permanently.” He said the last sentence under his breath, not exactly wanting her to hear it but not wanting to exactly hide it from her either. And did she hear it.

“‘Hurt me permanently’?” She asked, demanding an explanation. Inuyasha sighed.

‘I might as well tell her before the meeting.’ He thought, then took in a deep breath. “Koga intended to mark you. Without your consent.” He said.

“Mark me? Without my consent?” She asked more for clarification as it soaked into her brain.

“Yeah, a male marks his female when he chose her as a mate. The females don’t always have to consent to the mating ritual if the male demes her suitable and demons mate for life, so you would have no way out of it.” He continued.

“That asshole!!! He has no right to decide my fate for me!” Kagome fumed. Inuyasha’s ears flattened to his skull from her screams. “I’ll kill him!” Inuyasha placed a hand on hers and she immediately calmed down a level.

“You have to calm down about this till after we meet with the council.” He told her comfortingly. Then he grinned. “Why do you think I was so peeved last night when I found out you were with him?” He teased. Kagome laughed a little and closed her eyes to extinguish the fire of fury in her stomach and chest.

When she was finally calm enough to talk, she turned back to Inuyasha who had his eyes glued to the road. She knew he was nervous and angry too. “So how will this work?” She asked softly.

“I just need you to, basically, testify for me.” He replied simply. “Just be truthful and answer their questions with quick, to-the-point answers.” She nodded in understanding. He softened his voice as he turned towards her. “And don’t be afraid. Nothing bad will happen to you.” He gave her a comforting smile and she returned it.

“What about you?” She asked solemnly. He thought about it for a second before answering honestly.

“I don’t really know. I’ve never had any other occurrences, so I imagine, if anything, they would go easy on me.” He told her. Her breath hitched at the thought of Inuyasha being punished. He heard her choke up and quickly eased her mind. “I’ll be fine. I’m not too worried about it.”

But Kagome couldn’t shake the thought. What would happen to her if anything happened to him? Would Koga come after her once Inuyasha was out of the picture? Would he came and ‘mark’ her as his while Inuyasha was gone? What would happen if she tried to get out of being his ‘mate’? All these questions frightened her further.

“Inuyasha.” She said with a shaky voice. “I can’t live without you.”

Inuyasha heard her words and his heart leapt in his chest. He pulled the car over on the side of the road and threw it in park. He lunged himself at her and kissed her passionately. Kagome kissed him back. His fingers weaved in her raven black hair as he pulled her more into his lips. He pulled back to allow them to breath. He looked into her eyes to try and find any ounce of doubt but found none.

Kagome felt so safe in Inuyasha’s arms and knew she wanted to stay there forever. “Mark me Inuyasha.” She pleaded. His eyes widened. “I want you to mark me. Before we even meet with the council. They can’t take you away from me if you do.” She said desperately.

“K’gome, that’s not why you should want me to mark you. It’s way more permanent than that.” He said trying to avert his gaze from hers, but he couldn’t look away from the intensity it held.

“No, I love you Inuyasha! I never want to be away from you again! I want to be yours without question! I never want anyone else! Please. I love you.” She said gripping him as though he would disappear if she released her hold on him. She saw his eyes soften and fill with loving tenderness.

“You mean all you just said? No exaggerations?” He asked in a whisper. She nodded without breaking their gaze. “Alright.” He said. Kagome leased the breath she didn’t know she was holding and smiled wide. “I need you to stay calm and not feel afraid.” She looked confused but he continued. “I’m going to let my demon take over and I’ll be a full breed for a few minutes. If you feel frightened of me, I won’t lay a finger on you. I will be running purely on instincts. So just stay still and don’t make any sudden movements. It’s best if you are as submissive to me as possible.” He rambled off all the specifics, she nodded as he sat back against his door.

“This won’t hurt you will it?” She asked softly. He chuckled.

“Of course not. I just worry I will hurt you.” He said gravely. She reached up and gently touched his cheek.

“I know you won’t hurt me.” She comforted him. He pressed his cheek into her soft touch before gently replacing her hand on her leg.

“Stay still for me, k?” He said with a toothy grin. She grinned back and nodded, resting her back on her door “I love you too Kagome.” He said as he released her hand. Her heart skipped a beat and she watched as he took off his charm from around his neck.

He placed the charm on the dash as his demon feature reappeared from hiding. He closed his eyes as he relaxed against the door and receded into the depths of his mind, allowing his demon instincts to take over. He took a deep breath and filled his lungs with the scent of the woman in the car with him. His love.

When he opened his eyes again, Kagome gasped softly. Not out of fear, but out of marvel. The crimson red and cool blue contrasted in a beautiful symphony of balance and harmony. She resisted her urge to reach out and touch his cheek like before.

He leaned forward slightly sniffing furiously at the woman, his top row of teeth exposed because of his long fangs. He inched closer and closer. Still sniffing for any signs of fear from Kagome. He found nothing.

When he was right in front of her, he reached his clawed hand up and gently wrapped his strong arms around her back, pulling her into him. He contently placed his nose in the crook of her neck and began to growl in his familiar purr like fashion.

Kagome leaned her head away from him to give him more exposed skin to access. She hoped this was a submissive act cause it’s what she did instinctively. Inuyasha growled louder than before and she didn’t know if it was wrong for her to have moved. He did tell her to stay still. She was quickly reassured that she hadn’t done anything wrong when she felt him licking at the skin of her shoulder.

Her eyes rolled back in her head as she let the sensation on her shoulder course through her whole body. She moaned softly and Inuyasha’s eyes shot open. He clamped down on the skin of her shoulder.

Kagome’s eyes shot open now, but she held back her cry from the pain as she tensed her muscles. The pain was dulled as she felt him once again start licking at the wound. She relaxed and Inuyasha nuzzled his nose by her ear, purring like he was before he bit her. Kagome smiled and giggled as his breath fanned over her skin. He pulled back and his features started to return to normal, but she could see a smirk on his demon’s face.

When he was his hanyou self, she flung herself into his arms. He hugged his new mate tight. “I’ll stay by your side forever, Kagome.” He whispered in her ear.

A chill ran down her spine before she responded. “You are mine and I am yours.” She said softly. Inuyasha hugged her a little tighter and took in her sweet scent again.

After a few minutes embracing, Kagome buckled back up and they continued to head to meet with Sesshomaru before meeting with the council. Inuyasha pulling into his driveway and parked in front of the house. He snatched his charm off the dash, shoved it in his pocket and was opening Kagome's door for her in seconds. He offered his hand to help her out of the car and she gave him a smile as she took it.

Inuyasha flashed her a matching smile before shutting the car door behind her. He had lost all fears of his punishment that the council would give him because they couldn’t separate him from Kagome. They were finally bound together forever. She would stand by him for the rest of his existence.

He was so caught up in his own thought that he didn’t notice Sesshomaru standing in the doorway. They walked up and Sesshomaru crossed his arms. Inuyasha averted his eyes from his and shifted his weight slightly to be leaning a little closer to Kagome.

Sesshomaru sighed and turned to head into the house. Kagome gave Inuyasha a worried look but he lightly rubbed her arm to reassure her that everything was fine. He followed his brother inside with Kagome close behind him.

Once they reached the sitting room, Sesshomaru took a seat in the largest single seater in the room. He propped his elbow on the arm rest and ribbed one of his temples in annoyance. Inuyasha huffed as he sat on the loveseat with Kagome beside him.

“Please explain to me what happened.” He said as more of a statement than a question with a clear irritation in his voice.

“He started it!” Inuyasha exclaimed. Kagome almost laughed at the resemblance he had to a child in that moment, as though Koga were in the room to defend himself. ‘Not that I give a crap if he can defend himself. Asshole.’ She thought. Then, she noticed the warning glare Sesshomaru was giving Inuyasha. She gulped as she decided it was her turn to intervene.

“He is right. Koga did start it. Inuyasha was only trying defending me.” Kagome said to try and appease both of the males in the room. Sesshomaru looked at her and contemplated what she said.

“When I spoke to the council this morning, they said it was reported by one of the wolf demons that Inuyasha disturbed the peace and attacked their leader without reason.” Sesshomaru said. Kagome felt her face get hot again.

“No reason?! Koga came to the house to get me back and when he saw Inuyasha with me, he freaked out on both of us! And when I tried to stop their fighting, he threw me to the ground! Inuyasha did nothing that wasn’t provoked! He even wanted to stop the fight before it started when I wanted him too, but Koga wouldn’t just leave!” Kagome ranted. When she was done, she panted to regain her breath. Sesshomaru raised one hand and closed his eyes before standing. Kagome looked confused when she saw a smirk on his face.

“That’s all I needed.” He said smuggle. Inuyasha put and arm around her and rubbed comfortingly on her arm. He had turned and begun to walk out of the room but stopped at the doorway. “Be prepared to run in a few minutes.” He said. Kagome gave him an even more confused look by that comment but turned to Inuyasha.

“What does he mean ‘run’?” She asked. Inuyasha smiled as he stood and offered her his hand.

“Want a ride?” He said. Then it hit her.

She remembered when he leapt from rooftop to rooftop when he took her to the park and revealed his true form. ‘Why didn’t I think of that sooner?’ She asked herself dumbly. Gladly, she took his hand as they headed to the front of the house.

Once outside, Kagome saw Rin tying all of her hair back into a single high ponytail as she strattled Sesshomaru’s back. Kagome thought she looked so comfortable that she looked like she was riding a horse. Her back straight and not having to hold on in fear of falling off. Then she figured Sesshomaru had part in that, making sure she wouldn’t fall backwards. Sesshomaru didn’t look as though he cared one way or another but once Rin had her hair under control, she through her arms tightly around his neck happily.

Inuyasha kicked off his shoes and walked towards the couple. Kagome quickly joined him, mimicking Rin’s hair trick as she reached Inuyasha. He knelt down and Kagome wasn’t sure how to approach the situation. She gently wrapped her arms around his neck and pressed her knees into his back. He chuckled lowly and quickly grabbed the backs of her knees and stood up. She squeaked in surprise but recovered from it, holding his neck tighter than was probably necessary.

She wondered if Inuyasha would support her like Sesshomaru was Rin. She built up the courage and loosened her grip around his neck. He felt her relax and thought she was trusting him. When she completely released her hold on him and sat up too quickly Inuyasha’s breath hitched. She was falling backwards. He felt like he was in slow motion and couldn’t do anything.

Before she fell back too far, Sesshomaru had rushed behind them and Rin caught her. She then gently pushed Kagome back into Inuyasha’s back. When she was pressed back into him, he released a sigh of relief.

“You have to be more careful sweetie! It will take some time before you are as experienced being carried by Inuyasha as I am with Sesshomaru! You both need to get used to each other!” Rin explained without an ounce of scolding in her words. Kagome blushed in embarrassment. She re-wrapped her arms around Inuyasha and buried her face in his hair, trying to hide. Inuyasha rubbed circles with his thumbs on her thighs to comfort her.

“Shall we go.” Sesshomaru said more than asked. Inuyasha turned his head slightly towards the girl on his back.

“Hold on tight, k? I won’t drop you, promise.” He said under his breath, just loud enough for her to hear. She nodded into his hair and tightened her grip.

Sesshomaru and Inuyasha were off in a flash like bullets out of a gun. Kagome had to remember how to inhale for a second. Everything around her seemed to be speeding by her so fast her eyes couldn’t register what they were passing. All she knew at the moment that she could see for sure was Inuyasha and the pair in front of them.

She raised her head and tried to see more clearly and she realized that once her eyes adjusted to the speed, she could see more than she gave herself credit. She then turned her attention to what she could see. She didn’t recognize where they were. They were just running through the woods. But to where?

“Inuyasha, where exactly is the council?” She asked out of curiosity.

“They meet at different locations depending on where the incident is. So ours is at a big building they built pretty far out from the town.” He told her. “We’re almost there. Just hold tight.”

Like Inuyasha said, it was only a minute later that the building came into sight. It was huge. Kagome wondered how much really when on in this one building because it couldn’t just be for the council to meet every once in a decade.

The two brothers stopped a few feet away from the steps that led to a set of giant double doors at the entrance. Inuyasha placed Kagome on her feet and remained close to her in case her knees felt weak from the trip. She held onto his shoulder for a minute but then she was fine to walk. Sesshomaru walked up to them and focused on Kagome.

“Try to keep your temper in check in front of the elders. Let Inuyasha and myself do the talking unless you are spoken to.” He told her lowly. Kagome nodded. Then he turned to Inuyasha. “And you mind your manners. They will question your mate’s sudden appearance.” He said, glancing back to Kagome. Inuyasha huffed and pulled Kagome into him as he buried his nose in her hair.

Sesshomaru walked away to Rin before heading up the steps to the entrance of the building. Inuyasha grabbed Kagome’s hand and led her to follow. Sesshomaru opened the door and Kagome gasped at what she saw as they walked inside.
