CHAPTER 6
For Kagome's first full day in Prince Inuyasha's harem, the day had gone much better than Kagome would have dared hoped when she first heard the demand back at the village. Back when she'd first volunteered, she'd been willing to do so if it meant saving Ayumi, but that didn't mean she was at all happy about it. She'd honestly thought back then that she was volunteering for a life of misery, giving her body to a man over twice her age who would force himself on her whenever he felt like it, while simultaneously trying to survive in a world of backstabbing and sabotage by jealous fellow concubines all vying for power.
What she had gotten was much different. Inuyasha was young, and she had to admit extremely attractive. Last night he'd done his best to ease her fears and ensure her pleasure before taking his own, something which if Sango was to be believed he did every time with all his concubines. Granted she hadn't seen much of him yet, but from everything she'd seen so far he seemed to be an okay guy. If he wasn't a prince, and they'd meet under different - very different - circumstances Kagome wondered if they may have been able to be friends one day? She guessed it didn't really matter much either way now, that didn't happen and she had enough to deal with in reality that she didn't really have time to ponder 'what ifs'. Still, Inuyasha seemed a good guy, and if she had to be a in a concubine, he was the kind of master she wanted to have.
Then there were her fellow concubines to consider, who were also quite different than she had expected. Well, actually Dalal and Muna kind of were what she had expected, whores in very sense of the word who were trying to use their position to gain some measure of power. But really, from what Kagome had seen of them so far she'd hardly classify them as a threat. They seemed more stupid than dangerous. According to Sango they'd been trying for quite some time to gain Inuyasha's favour since they first arrived at the harem - Dalal over two years ago on Inuyasha's sixteenth birthday, Muna following seven months later - and so far none of their efforts had resulted in anything more than Inuyasha's growing intolerance for them and their fawning.
Then there was Sango, who was in many ways the complete opposite for what Kagome would have thought a concubine to be before coming here. Sweet, friendly, a bit of a temper but not at all vindictive. Sango, who'd been kind enough to help ease her fears about seeing and giving her innocence to Inuyasha last night when it probably would have been in her best interest as the Prince's favourite concubine to stay clear of the new girl and let her suffer on her own. Sango who'd taken the day to show Kagome the rules and inner workings of the harem when she had no reason to. Sango who had let Kagome borrow her clothes until the dressmaker could make some of her own that were considered `acceptable' for a Prince's concubine after seeing how uncomfortable Kagome felt in the ones that had been for her. Sango, who even after only a day and a half, Kagome truly thought she might have as a friend, something she felt she would desperately need in the days to come.
Kagome wondered what Sango's story was, how she remained so kind and seemingly happy in such an… unusual situation as this. Sango had told Kagome very little about her past so far. When Kagome had asked her how she came to be part of the harem, Sango had answered through clenched teeth that she had been given to Inuyasha as a `gift' on his sixteenth birthday by her father. Kagome hadn't pushed anymore after that, as it was obviously a very delicate subject with Sango, something that after all her problems with her own father, Kagome could understand perfectly. She wasn't ready to talk much about her father with someone she'd just meet either, even someone as nice as Sango. Maybe one day in the future, far in the future, she would tell Sango and ask in turn about Sango's past, but for now she wasn't going to pry into something that Sango obviously didn't want to talk about and might very well mean the end of their friendship before it even started.
Thinking about Sango was starting to make Kagome's thoughts drift off in a direction she was sure she wasn't really ready to deal with yet. It had been about half an hour now since that maid had arrived to inform Sango that she'd been summoned to Prince Inuyasha's chambers for the night. Part of Kagome had expected that she'd be the one summoned, especially after that comment Inuyasha had made earlier that morning about wanting to spend more time with her. Kagome knew that was silly to assume. There was only one master of the harem after all, and four concubines of which Sango was currently the official favourite. It was ridiculous to assume that Prince Inuyasha was going to call on her every night, especially so soon after she arrived. It only made sense that he would want to be with his favourite concubine most nights. Still, Kagome was somewhat surprised by the order. But what really surprised her was the jealousy she had first felt when the maid arrived with the order. She was actually jealous that Sango was going to spend the night in Prince Inuyasha's bed and not her. Where on earth had that thought come from? Two nights ago she had been terrified by the very thought of such a summons, and now she was jealous that Prince Inuyasha had wanted Sango and not her? What had happened to her? Had one night, one time having sex, turned her into such a slut that she was longing for Prince Inuyasha's touch every night? By the Gods, what was wrong with her? She hoped none of her feelings had shown in her expression, she hated to think of what Sango might think of her if she'd known.
Come to think of it, Kagome mused suddenly, Sango's expression at hearing the summon had been perfectly blank. Not happy, not excited, not upset or scared. Just blank. Kagome had seen such expression on her mother's face many times in the past, usually when her father was somehow involved, to know that was when she'd be in truth feeling very strong emotions which she dared not let anyone else see. Was that also the case with Sango, was she trying to hide something that she dared not let others know she was feeling? If so what? After the way Sango had gone on about how wonderful Inuyasha was all day, she would think that the older woman was the Prince's biggest advocate. Would such a woman really be that upset about the summons that she felt she needed to completely hide her reaction? Or was she reading too much into it, making it into something that it wasn't? Kagome's mother was hardly a model for all women everywhere after all, thank the Gods when you consider everything Adiva had gone through on a daily basis since marrying Khayyam. Maybe it was just that such summons were common enough for Sango that she no longer raised much of a reaction. Kagome supposed that was possible, more than possible really when you took all the factors that Kagome was aware of into consideration. Though Kagome couldn't help but hope that if that was the case that she would never become so indifferent. It just seemed wrong to Kagome somehow.
Kagome sighed as she got up from the window she had been sitting at while she contemplated everything and headed for her bed. It was getting kind of late and she still hadn't fully recovered from the hard journey here from Ado, so seeing as it was rather unlikely she would have anything else she had to do tonight she figured now looked like a good time to try to get some sleep. With that thought in mind, Kagome lay down on the rather overly soft bed and tried to get comfortable… and also tried to banish from the mind the image of Sango and the Prince going at it right now.
***
Half an hour earlier.
Inuyasha sat on the balcony outside his sleeping chamber, staring at the goblet of wine sitting untouched in front of him as he waited for Sango to arrive, having just sent a servant with summons for her a few minutes ago. In truth there was another concubine Inuyasha would have much rather sent for. It amazed Inuyasha that he would find himself lusting after Kagome so much after just one night with the girl. He'd never felt like this about any of his other concubines. Not even Sango, who he had liked from the start, had evoked such a strong reaction from him so quickly. In fact, she still didn't. She was a nice girl and he enjoyed spending time with her. There was also no doubt that she was attractive to him, and she did fulfil his needs, but with Kagome there seemed to be something else, something that had been lacking in his other concubines. He didn't know what that something was, but it was sure as hell strong. He had so wanted to call on her again tonight and find out if that something was in fact real or just something he'd imagined. He hadn't though, for two reasons. The main one was that he wasn't really sure if she'd fully recovered from her first time, and he didn't want to accidentally hurt her. Not that he'd ever wanted hurt any of his concubines, but with Kagome he'd felt the urge to be doubly careful with her. Maybe it was just that part of her had seemed so fragile to him with how scared she had been last night and how uncertain she'd seemed this morning. He didn't know what it was, but he wanted to ensure she'd had time to recover before he took her again at the very least. Besides, the second reason was that he really did need to speak to Sango, so he might as well kill two snakes with one stone as the saying went.
Just as Inuyasha was thinking that, he heard the door to his chamber open, and couldn't help the small smile that made it's way onto his face. Nice timing.
“Hello?” That well-known female voice called after seeing no sigh of the master of the harem.
“Out here Sango.” Inuyasha called, and sure enough Sango appeared in the doorway a moment later. “Sit down, would you like a drink?” Inuyasha said, waving to the unused chair on the opposite side of the small table. When Sango sat down and nodded her thanks he then picked up the bottle of wine and poured Sango her own goblet before finally taking a sip from his own.
“So,” Inuyasha said, sitting back and once more setting his goblet down on the table. “I heard you've been spending time with Kagome today and yesterday.”
“Yes, I have.” Sango said, wondering why Inuyasha was offering her wine and talking to her about her day. Not that Inuyasha didn't do these things with her, but usually if he wanted to hang out and talk he'd do it during the day, often with a day trip out of the harem thrown in. If he saw you in his chambers, it was usually clothes off and get into bed to start fucking as soon as possible.
“What do you think of her?”
“Well, she's nice, a lot nicer than Jalal and Muna. I think we might actually be able to be friends, and I don't have to tell you how rare that is for two concubines in a harem.”
“That nice.” Inuyasha said, looking at Sango with an expression that made her feel like he was trying to read her very thoughts. “But what do you really think of her?”
Suddenly, Sango got what Inuyasha was asking about, as the metaphorical oil lamp lit above her head. “Inuyasha, she's not Kikyo.” Sango said reassuringly. “I don't think you need to worry about her.”
“We didn't worry about Kikyo either.” Inuyasha muttered, turning slightly to stare out over the darkened garden below. “Not until…”
“Inuyasha, she's really not Kikyo, she's nothing like Kikyo.” Sango interrupted firmly. “I don't know why Kikyo did want she did any more than you do. No one knows except Kikyo, and she's dead. But Inuyasha, something was seriously wrong with Kikyo before she even came here. We both sensed it, and nothing we did made that go away. Kagome's not like that at all, she just doesn't have it in her. You don't have to worry about that.”
“You know her that well after a day and a half?” Inuyasha asked, raising an eyebrow at her sceptically.
Sango however just snorted. “If growing up in my father's crease pool of a manor doesn't teach me to have a sense of who's dangerous and untrustworthy, nothing will. Granted, I don't know all that much about Kagome's life story, but you know what, I took me a year before I was willing to open up to you about my past. I don't expect her to open up to me fully in less than two days. But that doesn't mean I haven't gotten a sense of who she is, and what I've seen so far tells me she's trustworthy. What about you, you're as good at reading people as I am, despite how you like to keep that `dumb younger prince' act to throw people off guard. You were with her last night and this morning, don't try to tell me you didn't get the sense that she's a nice girl.”
Inuyasha sighed, but didn't try to deny it. Sango was right, he really did think that Kagome was trustworthy. He wanted to trust her, he really did. But after everything that had happened with Kikyo…
Seeming to read his thoughts, Sango spoke up in a quiet voice. “You got to start trusting people again sometime Inuyasha. I know it's hard. I know that despite everything you claim, Kikyo really did hurt you in more ways than one. But you can't let the past control your present a future. You got to try trusting people outside of your current little group, unless of course you want to just look yourself away for the rest of your life. Sure, things might be easier in many ways if you do, but come on, wouldn't you get bored? We both know you're too much of a wanderer and adventurer for that.”
“Yeah, yeah, you made your point.” Inuyasha muttered, looking at her sourly. “Don't you ever get tired of being right all the time?”
“Nope.” Sango said cheerfully. “I really don't.”
With a groan at that, Inuyasha drained the last of his goblet and stood up. “This is exactly why I got to stop talking to you.” He growled. “I'm going to bed, feel free to have as much of the wine as you want.”
“What?” Sango asked, surprised and confused. “I thought…”
“I'm not in the mood tonight, I just needed a way to talk to you without rumours starting that something's up. I really just want to get some sleep tonight. I, I mean,” suddenly realising that she might take that as an insult he quickly started shuttering, “you're a great in the sack and everything and on any other night, sure I'd love to fuck you, I mean it's not like I'm getting tired of you or anything…”
“It's okay, I understand.” Sango broke his embarrassed babbling with a slight chuckle. “You go ahead and get some sleep. If you don't mind, I think I'll take you up on your offer and enjoy the wine and the night air for a little while longer before I turn in myself. I'm assuming if you don't want rumours starting you want me to sleep here tonight? Okay, I'll be careful not to wake you when I turn in.” She added when Inuyasha nodded.
With one last nod and a quiet goodnight, Inuyasha headed inside. He took off all his clothes before getting into bed, he always sleep naked and it was doubtful Sango would care even if they were going to have sex tonight, it wasn't like she hadn't seen him in the nude enough times to have his body dedicated to memory anyway after two plus years as his favourite concubine. He couldn't help but wonder though, why he said he didn't want to bang her tonight? Sure, he would have preferred Kagome, but right up until the point Sango had arrived he'd been planning on doing her after he'd finished talking. What made him change his mind? Maybe it was talking about Kagome with her, but somehow the idea just no longer seemed right. Oh well, at least Sango didn't seem offended or anything. If she was okay just sleeping here tonight and his body didn't want to play he might as well leave it well enough alone and get some sleep like he said he was going to.
***
Sango watched Inuyasha head back inside over the rim of her goblet. She managed to keep her face blank in case he happened to look back at her, but inside she couldn't help but feel relieved that for whatever reason he didn't want to have sex with her tonight.
It wasn't that she physically didn't like being with Inuyasha. Granted she didn't have anything to compare to, seeing as Inuyasha was the only man she'd ever slept with, but he was always mindful of her needs and Sango was convinced a very good partner in bed. Physically she had no complaints about lieng with him, but emotionally… ever since… Well there was no point dwelling on that. She refused to dwell on that. It was a fools dream to hope that anything could come out of it, and thinking about it was just going to make her upset. She needed to put it from her mind and move on, she already had life far better than her mother ever did and she dared not risk it on an idiotic wish for a future that could never be. She needed to wipe it completely from her mind and just accept things the way they were.
Pouring herself another drink that she swallowed in two huge gulps, Sango once again repeated her resolve to forget it, knowing full well that she never would be able to.
