Chapter 4

It was bad enough that she had forgotten her skirt, but fate would not let her off so easily. As she sat at her desk, praying that none of her fellow classmates would notice that she had come to school half naked, she suddenly realized that the test she had been concentrating on was in a different language. `What?!' She glanced around at her fellow classmates to see if any of them were in the same predicament, but they were all happily scribbling away as if it were the simplest thing in the world.

"Five minutes left!" The teacher announced.

Kagome snapped her attention back to her paper, trying to make sense of the foreign characters. "Well, I guess I might as well start by putting my name on the top." The second her pencil touched the paper however, it broke; the resonating crack of the lead ringing in her ears. She desperately glanced around for a pencil sharpener, but there was only one at the front of the classroom, and the more she concentrated on it, the farther away it became.

Then, things really took a turn for the worst. Hojo entered the classroom and began looking around, as if he were searching for something…..or someone. Kagome sunk into her seat, hoping against all hope that he wouldn't see her. Suddenly, his eyes locked onto hers and his face brightened.

"Higurashi!" He was coming, closer, closer, closer. She looked for the teacher, wouldn't he stop him? She was in the middle of a test, right? He was right in front of her now, and it was only a matter of seconds until he noticed that she had forgotten a certain article of clothing.

Then, drip, drop….drip, drop. "What the…" She looked up for the source of the water, and was rewarded with a big drop right in between her eyes.

Kagome opened her eyes to find a very delighted looking monk hovering over her. She blinked in confusion and sat up slowly, eyeing the water bottle in Miroku's hand very suspiciously.

"Ah, so you're finally awake now I see." He tried to keep a straight face, but there was amusement twinkling in his eyes.

"So then it was… a dream?" Remnants of her dream came floating back to her, most notably the drip, drop that took place right before she woke up. Putting two and two together she glared at Miroku before snatching the water bottle from his hand and shaking it violently in his face as she scolded. "What kind of way is that to wake someone up?" She exclaimed angrily.

"Ah, Kagome-sama, forgive me! But the others have already left and Inuyasha told me not to touch you so it was the only way I could wake you!" His hands were raised in defense.

"The others already left?" She couldn't help the hurt that leaked into her voice at the idea of them leaving her behind. "Where did they go?"

Miroku noted with relief that Kagome had set the water bottle that she had been shaking in his face aside before speaking. "Inuyasha smelled Kouga so he sped off to intercept the wolf before he could make it here to see you. Sango followed to stop their confrontation from getting too serious, and Shippo followed to watch the show. I stayed here to wake you." He finished with a noble sigh.

"Gee, thanks." She rolled her eyes as she got to her feet. "Let's go."

"Aren't you going to change out of your pajamas first?"

"There's no time, you know how those two are." She said the last part in annoyance before turning in the direction where she felt the pull of the sacred jewel coming from.

"Wait Kagome-sama, the real reason I insisted on staying behind to wake you was that I thought this might be the perfect opportunity to exercise operation W.I.L…"

"What do you want so early in the morning?!" Inuyasha barked.

"I can visit my woman any time of day-or night- that I like, mutt-face." Kouga retorted.

Inuyasha bristled, "Why you- how many times do I have to tell you that she is not your woman?!" With this he raised his sword to attack.

"Inuyasha-" Sango began, before she was interrupted.

"Inuyasha!" All heads whipped in the direction of the very angry priestess who had suddenly entered the clearing. "What are you doing?" She stomped her foot, looking as threatening as a petite 15 year old in pink bunny pajamas with matching pink slippers could. "And so early in the morning too," she grumbled to herself as she massaged her forehead.

"Well, I- I mean he…..He's the one who showed up, so he's the one who started it!" Inuyasha looked quite pleased with his logic.

"Inuyasha, Kouga-kun is my friend and he may visit any time he pleases!"

Kouga nodded his head in agreement as he wound his arm around Kagome's waist.

`When did he get there?' Kagome wondered

Inuyasha growled in annoyance, "Get your filthy paws off of her you wimpy wolf!" He struck out at Kouga, but the attack was avoided easily enough as Kouga swept Kagome up in his arms and jumped to the other side of the clearing.

Inuyasha spun around, preparing to attack again, before Kagome stopped him. "Inuyasha, stop attacking Kouga-kun!" Inuyasha nearly face-faulted. That wolf was holding her like she was his and she didn't even care! He was torn about what to do.

Kagome on the other hand, was waging her own inner battle. As Kouga set her gently on her feet, Miroku's words replayed over in her head.

"An aggressive woman rewards affection. Show Inuyasha that you will reward affection by doing so with Kouga."

"But how will I do that?"

"Do you really need to ask me?"

Kagome blushed as she remembered what Miroku had told her to do. Was it really alright for her to do something like that? Would Kouga get mad? She noticed that Kouga and Inuyasha had again engaged in a verbal fight, while Sango and Shippo were clearly engrossed in watching the argument. Miroku, on the other hand, was not watching the argument. No, he was watching her. Kagome gulped, `Oh well, here goes nothing!'

Kouga, who had been in the middle of shouting an insult to Inuyasha, stiffened abruptly as his eyes widened measurably.

Inuyasha laughed, "Ha! Got a problem there, wimpy wolf? What's the matter, run out of insul-" He stopped abruptly as he noticed where Kagome's hand was.

"Oh! I'm so sorry Kouga-kun!" She giggled cutely, just as Miroku said she should, as she withdrew her hand. Kouga turned his wide eyes to her as she continued. "My hand, it just must have slipped! Oh I'm so embarrassed!" She pressed her hands to her cheeks in an effort to cool the heated blush that tinted them.

Everyone watched Kagome in a mixture of awe, wonder, and shock. All that is, except Miroku, who had a suspiciously satisfied grin on his face.

Shippo was the first to break the silence. "Kagome, are you feeling alright?" He hopped to her shoulder and pressed one of his tiny hands to her forehead, much like he had seen her do to Inuyasha when he was acting out of character.

He squealed and jumped away though, as Kouga abruptly swept Kagome up in a tight embrace. "My dear Kagome, I see that you are finally beginning to see me as more than a friend. I am greatly encouraged by your acts here today!" He pulled away so that they were arms length apart, before leaning in and kissing her forehead. "Until next time!" And then he was gone, leaving behind a swirling whirlwind and a baffled group of travelers.

Kagome blushed at Kouga's display of affection, before turning back to her group, who were all staring at her.
