Chapter 2: Reacquainting Ourselves

Last night wasn't a good night for Sesshoumaru Apollo Masaharu. He came home after the encounter with the petite girl. And she somehow had a hold on his mind. Why couldn't he just take his mind off of her? The way he felt around her, and just with that one encounter he felt like he had betrayed her. Guilt washed over him again as he remember the look in her eyes when she saw him. The glaze over her blue-grey eyes that made them look silver sort of. Sesshoumaru shook his head, what the hell was wrong with him? He couldn't feel this way, he had done nothing of the sort to hurt her in a way. He just met her for Kami's sake!

&Ring!&> &Ring!&>

'Blasted phone, don't know why I have such a stupid contraption,' Sesshoumaru thought. 'Maybe if I just let it ring the answering machine will get it.' After a few minutes the ringing ceased. 'Thank Kami,' Sesshoumaru mentally praised the Kami's up in the heavens.

&Ring!&> &Ring!&>

'Damn it!' Sesshoumaru cursed. Sesshoumaru moved towards the phone, he looked at the caller ID to see Inuyasha's cell number. 'What does he want?' Sesshoumaru asked himself. It was rare that Inuyasha called his older brother, mainly because they barely get along. And they never made an effort to have a civil conversation once in a while. Contemplating on whether he should answer to his brother's calls or not Sesshoumaru stared at the contraption.

<&!%&

"Damn it! Pick up the phone Sesshoumaru!" Inuyasha muttered to himself. Once again he got the answering machine. Inuyasha growled, he was getting annoyed with his brother. Well, half-brother but that didn't matter right now. What mattered, was the fact that his older half-sister who just happens to be Sesshoumaru's younger full blooded sister! And he wasn't answering his bloody phone!

Inuyasha tried again, hopefully Sesshoumaru would answer his frantic calls this time. First ring…second ring….third ring… DAMN IT HE JUST WOULDN'T PICK UP THE STUPID PHONE!

"You have reached the residence of Sesshoumaru Apollo Masaharu. Leave a message," Sesshoumaru's voice came flowing through Inuyasha's cell. Inuyasha growled, not again! That was about the millionth time he got the stupid answering machine.

"Sesshoumaru, pick up the damn phone! Listen, when you hear this. Call me back, it's about Kohana," Inuyasha said through gritted teeth. Knowing he couldn't call back he just waited for Sesshoumaru to call him back. Inuyasha's shoulders sagged as he walked back to his sister's room in the hospital. He knew he couldn't go into the room, so he just waited in the waiting area. 'How can I be so stupid as to let that baka idiot near her?' Inuyasha mentally berated himself. Sesshoumaru was going to kill him once he heard that he let their precious sister fall into a trap.

-Flashback-

"Don't! Stop!" Kohana shouted as she rushed towards the entrance.

"Kohana leave!" Naraku screamed to his girlfriend.

"NO! I told you, I'm going to stick with you, through and through," Kohana said panting as she had caught up to him.

"Your brothers are going to kill me for not protecting you! Leave, while you still can!" Naraku said in barely over a whisper.

"I told you I-" Kohana was cut off with a huge BOOM! Kohana clung to Naraku when she heard the sound. Naraku shrugged the girl off him and watched as his girlfriend fell on her bottom. The girl just wouldn't listen to him, she was to stubborn for her own good.

"I said to go," Naraku said harshly as he dragged her up with her arm.

"Ow, Naraku you're hurting me," Kohana complained.

"Good, you are way to stubborn for your own good Kohana. I said to leave and what did you do? You still stay here, practically putting your life in danger," Naraku said.

"Well, well, well. What do we have here? Naraku and his pathetic yet beautiful girlfriend," Hiten said as he came out of the shadows.

"Fuck off you bastard," Naraku said.

"Tut, tut Naraku. Do we have a tongue?" Hiten sneered.

"Shutup,"

"No, I think I won't. Actually you know why I'm here Naraku. Now hand me the money and I will leave you and your whore alone," Hiten smirked.

"I told you, when I get it. I'll give it to you," Naraku explained calmly, though he was sure it didn't' sound that way.

"I am not a whore!" Kohana burst out and detached herself from Naraku. Naraku paled a bite.

"You will teach that whore to hold her tongue," Hiten snapped.

"I am not a whore, and I will say what I want when I want," Kohana snapped back.

"Bitch, learn to respect those whose standards that are above yours," Hiten said fuming.

"You are nothing above me. Your but a hustler trying to make some money. I'm a medical student, way better occupation then yours," Kohana said smugly.

"Kohana shut up," Naraku hissed.

"No I will not shut up! I can't believe that your just going to stay there and let him insult us like that!" Kohana cried in outrage.

"I will teach you to hold your tongue," Hiten said as he raised his gun, and with a huge boom Kohana fell over clutching her chest. While Hiten and Naraku took off.

-End Flashback-

Inuyasha felt tears pricking in his eyes. He couldn't believe that Kohana's boyfriend had just left her there to die without any help at all. If he hadn't been walking by the alleyway just then, who knows what could have happened to his sister.

"Sesshoumaru, pick up the damn phone! Listen, when you hear this. Call me back, it's about Kohana," Inuyasha's voice wafted through the phone. Sesshoumaru felt his fingers go numb. Kohana? What could have possibly happen to Kohana? Hopefully nothing. For Inuyasha's sake, it better be nothing. Sesshoumaru picked up the receiver and hurriedly dialled Inuyasha's number.

"Hello?" came the hoarse voice from the other end.

"Inuyasha? What happened to Kohana?" Sesshoumaru asked quickly and hurriedly.

"Oh it's bad Sesshoumaru. Just when I thought I could have trusted that bloody bastard! He goes and does something so stupid!" Inuyasha exclaimed.

"Inuyasha stop rambling and tell me what happened," Sesshoumaru pressed. He knew he wasn't exactly acting like himself, but hell. He never did, when it concerned the health of his younger sister.

"Right, well her and her boyfriend went for a little 'outing' so to speak. One thing led to another and somehow Kohana got shot. Her boyfriend Naraku left her there to die. God when I get my hands on that bastard I'm going to slit his throat!" Inuyasha growled into his phone. Sesshoumaru felt his blood go cold. No, this couldn't be happening, his little sister…dead?

"Inuyasha! Is she dead?"

"NO! Thank the Kami's no! She's in the hospital. They say she's going to be fine for now. They don't know how long she might be able to live. That's why I called you. Sesshoumaru you have to come home now!" Inuyasha yelled into the phone.

Sesshoumaru didn't need to be told twice. He dropped the phone and rushed to the airport. His sister was in the hands of his pathetic brother, he just had to help her. 'Hold on Kohana, I'm coming'

<&!%&

"Hello?" Inuyasha said into his phone. He then heard the beep on the other end, Sesshoumaru had hung up. Inuyasha growled, the bastard better be getting home soon.

"Inuyasha?" called a feminine voice. Inuyasha looked up to see Kagome? No it was his girlfriend Kikyou. He looked into her honey brown eyes, in it he could see concern, worry, and pity. He didn't need anyone's pity. Kikyou placed a hand on his shoulder. Inuyasha just shrugged it off. Kikyou looked hurt, but she understood that he was going through a rough time right now.

"Inuyasha…are you okay?" Kikyou asked timidly.

"WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE IT?!?! DO I LOOK OKAY TO YOU?" Inuyasha burst out. Kikyou looked up at him hurt. 'What had she done to cause him this anger?'

"I'm sorry Inuyasha. Maybe I should just leave," Kikyou said. Inuyasha realised that Kikyou was only trying to comfort him.

"Wait Kikyou. I'm sorry, I just lost my temper for a moment there," Inuyasha called out grabbing a hold on her hand.

"I understand," Kikyou said softly.

Kagome ran into the airport and rushed to the secretary to ask for a ticket to the next flight to Japan. She was relieved to find out that she could catch the flight that was to leave in half an hour. The only thing that Kagome brought with her was her purse and her wallet. That was it, late into the night after not being able to have a good night's sleep she got a call from her mom that her dad had been in an accident.

The next thing that Kagome knew she was sitting on an airplane on her way to Tokyo Japan. She didn't want to go, but she had to…for her father's sake. Kagome sighed and looked out the window as the plane and watched the city New York become smaller, smaller, and smaller. 'I'm coming home dad, please just wait for me.'

<&!%&

Sesshoumaru rushed into the hospital, praying to the Kami's that he wasn't too late. He asked the nurse at the front desk where Kohana Masaharu was. The nurse had told him the second floor second door on his right. All the while the nurse was flirting with him and had slipped him her number. Sesshoumaru normally would have insulted her but now, that didn't matter. All that matter was that his sister was alive.

He ran up the stairs only to be greeted by Inuyasha and his girlfriend in a passionate embrace. He snarled, disgusting. Wait, that girl looked so much like the one he bumped into. But it couldn't be, the girl was all the way back in New York. He dismissed it quickly.

"Inuyasha, where is she?" Sesshoumaru questioned putting on his cold façade. Inuyasha and Kikyou jumped apart instantly, Sesshoumaru smirked. Inuyasha looked for the voice that was his brother. Then turned around to see his brother smirking.

"Sesshoumaru, about time you got your lazy ass out here," Inuyasha sneered.

"Shut up, now is not the time for your silly bad mouthing sprees. Where is our sister?" Sesshoumaru questioned yet again. Inuyasha's face softened and pointed to the door right of him. Sesshoumaru nodded and headed towards it. He paused halfway through to look at the girl that Inuyasha was embracing. No, it wasn't the girl that had been plaguing his mind. The girl that was had blue-grey eyes, that made it look silver. This one, had dull honey brown eyes. He glared at her and continued through and closed the door shut behind him.

"I have a feeling he doesn't like me," Kikyou stated.

"He does that to everyone," Inuyasha said.

"Inuyasha?" a masculine voice called. Inuyasha turned around, he was tired of having disturbances. He turned around to see Miroku and Sango, his two best-friends.

"What are you guys doing here?" Inuyasha asked.

"We came to see how you and Kohana are doing," Sango said sitting on one of the chairs next to Kikyou. Sango didn't like this girl, she saw it as a replacement for her friend Kagome. Miroku and Inuyasha didn't see it though, she was sure they were under some spell or something. She just couldn't believe that Kikyou and Kagome were cousins, and that Kikyou had drove Kagome out of here. Telling her that it was her fault that her brother Souta died. Though it actually wasn't, it was Kikyou's for giving him that Pasta. Kikyou knew that Souta was allergic to cheese, yet she still put some on the poor boy's meal.

"Kohana," Sesshoumaru whispered staring at his sister. She stirred a little and opened her eyes to reveal light amber eyes.

"Sesshou-kun," Kohana said weakly.

"Are you alright?" Sesshoumaru asked concerned.

"Fine, just a little tired," Kohana answered.

"Shall I leave you alone to rest?" Sesshoumaru asked.

"Please," Kohana said and closed her eyes.

"Very well," Sesshoumaru said. He gave his sister a peck on the cheek, and left.

<&!%&

Sesshoumaru walked out of his sister's room still contemplating on the events that happened. He looked up to see his brother's friends sitting in the waiting area. He almost smiled, these people cared for his sister, and for that he was grateful. They stopped their conversation to look at him.

"How is she?" Sango asked timidly.

"Tired," Sesshoumaru answered and sat next to his brother.

"Sesshoumaru, I'm sorry for not watching her closely enough," Inuyasha said bitterly.

"Surprisingly enough, I do not blame you. I blame her bastard boyfriend," Sesshoumaru said remembering what Inuyasha had told him. Inuyasha nodded surprised that his older brother didn't blame him, but also relieved. Suddenly they heard someone's running footsteps, they looked up to see no one other then Kagome. Everyone stared shocked at her, but Kagome didn't pay attention to them. In fact, it looked like she didn't notice them at all. She walked straight ahead until she reached the door next to Kohana's and opened it. Inside you can hear her gasp, Sango stood up to go see what was wrong. But was stopped when she saw Miroku shake his head.

Kikyou was curious as to why her cousin was back in Tokyo. 'The little bitch is going to try and steal Inuyasha away from me again.' Actually, it was the opposite, Kikyou tried to steal Inuyasha away from Kagome. And it worked, Kikyou praised herself that it did. But what she didn't know was that Inuyasha and Kagome didn't love each other that way.

<&!%&

"Mamma?" Kagome whispered as she looked around the room. She gasped at what she saw, there was her father and mother sitting next to his bedside. Her dad had all these tubes and wires connected to him. And she was sure that her father was on life support. 'No' Kagome thought. Her dad couldn't die on her now can he?

"Kagome, I prayed to the Kami's to let him live until you came. But they wouldn't see to it. So I put him on life support, just until he saw you. He has little life in him," Kagome's mother explained.

"Daddy," Kagome cried and ran over to him and hugged him while she sobbed. After a minutes her father opened his eyes.

"Kagome," He whispered faintly.

"Dad,"

"Take care of your mother for me," He whispered.

"Of course, I love you daddy," Kagome whispered back.

"I love you too my darling baby girl. Souta and I will watch over you and your mother," He whispered, and with that he slowly closed his eyes and died. The instant he died and beeping went off in the room. Nurses and doctors came rushing into the room ushering two sobbing Higurashi women out. Kagome's mom couldn't be there anymore so she rushed off to the cafeteria. Whilst Kagome stayed in the waiting area sobbing. It was then that she noticed people staring at her. She looked up to see the curious stares of Inuyasha, Miroku, Sango, Kikyou, and the man that she bumped into in New York.

"Kagome," Inuyasha whispered starting toward her.

"Don't," Kagome croaked.

"Gomen Nasai 'Gome, I didn't mean it," Inuyasha said.

"I said don't!" Kagome cried. Miroku placed a hand on Inuyasha's shoulder and shook his head. Inuyasha reluctantly left her alone.

"Kagome, what happened in there?" Kikyou questioned her cousin.

"Father's dead," Kagome said hoarsely.

"No!" Kikyou exclaimed, and put a hand to her mouth.

"A stupid drunk driver hit him," Kagome said. Kikyou made her way towards her shaking cousin to comfort her. Kagome reluctantly leant in to her cousin's embrace. No matter Kikyou despised her cousin of what she had, they were family. Inuyasha looked on in disbelief, 'What? How?' was all the man could think.

Kikyou and Kagome pulled away from the embrace. Kagome looked around and spotted everyone who had wanted her to leave Tokyo and never return. Even her cousin wanted her to leave, but as the saying goes 'blood is thicker then water'. Suddenly her eyes fell on Sesshoumaru. He looked at her, staring deeply into her blue-grey eyes that looked silver. Then looked at Kikyou, the dull honey brown eyes looked at him also.

Kagome felt a rush of déjà vu. She looked to her cousin, then to Sesshoumaru. Something felt so familiar about him, but she didn't know what. Kikyou looked from her cousin to her boyfriend's bother. Why did she suddenly feel like she betrayed her own flesh and blood? Guilt washed over Kikyou and Sesshoumaru as they both laid their eyes on Kagome. Kagome felt a sense of betrayal as they both looked at her. Something was wrong, and she didn't like it, nor did the other three.

<&!%&

"Will they find out?" the lady in white asked the man.

"Soon, just let them rest. And they shall remember," the man answered.
