“You must say only what we discussed and nothing else, Rin.”

The young woman rolled tired eyes in his direction as she poked a finger into the rotary phone. Those same eyes flicked occasionally to the paper clutched in her well-manicured hand.

Did her fiancé have such little faith in her?

Or maybe her testiness stemmed from her lack of decent sleep. She had only dozed a few hours last night, what with Sesshomaru pacing about as he awaited a phone call from one of his contacts in the Japanese Army. After taking the brief call two hours ago, he had remained secluded in his office until he had gathered his family to inform them.

Elegant brows were raised at her impudent gesture and with the intent to annoy, Sesshomaru placed two hands on his desk, leaned over, and critically examined every spin of the dial. Rin tried her best to ignore him before flapping a hand to shoo him away from where she sat in his high backed leather chair.

He yielded and perched himself on the corner of the mahogany behemoth that had been purchased with some of the first earnings from the company he had built from scratch. It signified his status as boss, and that despite an affluent upbringing, resultant from his mother’s wealth, he was still as proud as he was on the day it was delivered and pleased- pleased that he was able to procure such an item on his own without his mother’s money or his late father’s connections.

He waited as she carefully dialed the number that Sango had given him.

Rin would do well, he had no doubts.

It was a matter of his brother's life- they both knew this- and she had always adored Inuyasha. Rin was human, two years older than the hanyou, and both Inuyasha and Sango loved Rin as much, if not more than they cared for him- of that he was quite sure of.

Rin had been his companion for the past six years, neither one eager to marry and change the dynamics of their successful pairing. She oversaw his estate and most of his financial affairs and brought a joy into a previously tedious and over worked existence.

He knew, as did she, that he needed her more than he could admit. Not that he would ever tell her in such a blatant way. But she knew.

And as such, she was the only one he could entrust this delicate task to.

He had received a communication from his contact that the interim Japanese despots who controlled the country were now fully aware of the extent of hanyou capabilities. And because of this, they were requiring all emigrants to be placed in a holding cell for 48 hours to ensure that only humans were leaving the country.

“No answer,” she placed the heavy receiver onto its cradle.

“Hnn,” he thought this over.

“Should I try back?”

“Well, it is nine at night over there,” he pointed out. “Perhaps she is preparing for or already in bed. I will give her another half hour or so before trying again. Have some breakfast.” Rin was about to protest, but an audible grumble of her stomach caused her to laugh instead.

“I’ll be in the little dining room. Come get me when you’re ready,” she yawned and her eyes, already tiny from lack of sleep, disappeared into slits as her arms rose above her head in a stretch. The youkai brushed a quick kiss upon the top of her head as she passed beside him on her way out. The pixie-style of her hair tickled his lips, and though she did not see it, her slight form exiting elicited a smile from the brooding gentleman.

Damn his brother for getting himself into such a mess. They had concocted the perfect escape, but now it was too late. Every moment that Inuyasha stayed in that forsaken country…idiot. Idiot.

Hanyou, for reasons lost to time, experienced a short period during which they physically lost their youkai characteristics. This day or night during the month had been the saving grace to hanyou in parts of the world where they were facing backlash and violence.

Theoretically, all one had to do was take a photo during one’s human time and have a passport made, wait a month, and escape during that brief window. This is how the hanyou of Japan had made their exodus and how Inuyasha was to make his escape. The plan was to wait, with passport in tow, at the safe house Sango had set up until his night and leave, no one else the wiser.

But this was no longer feasible. Somehow the age old hanyou secret, so carefully guarded- a secret that many killed for and died to protect- was out and now there was a full two day hold on all persons leaving Japan. Though Inuyasha had lost his passport, it would be useless to send him a duplicate. Official flight or ferry out of the country was now off the table.

Inuyasha’s human night, according to Sango, happened a little over a week before they made it to the Higurashi Shrine. He would be turning again soon and Sesshomaru could not risk that his often irrational younger brother would do something stupid. Injured or healing, he may try the airport or boat dock even without documentation. He was unaware they would hold him, and then it would be over.

This childhood chum of his adopted sister, Kagome Higurashi, must be given information to pass along to his brother, before he did anything stupid. And it was very probable that he would.

After waking his family to inform them of this development, they had argued over who should make the call. It was unknown how safe the line was and so it was not practicable to relay the information directly to her. They had to be subtle and hope that the girl was capable of catching on.

He could not be the one to do it. He was told that Kagome had a boyfriend who was involved in the army. A strange man calling may cause problems for her. It had to be a woman. Sango argued that it should be her, but Sesshomaru dismissed this. Sango had come home shaken and emotional- two things she had never really been, and Sesshomaru was uneasy lest she blurt anything out. His mother had volunteered, but her phone voice was so cold and formal, Kagome would most likely be put off and made weary.

After the decision was made, Sesshomaru dismissed the group and instructed Rin to make the call. It would be a scripted act, in case anyone on the other end was listening, and he only hoped this Kagome would be smart enough to play along. He doubted it, but Sango emphatically defended the girl.

Checking the clock, he arose and walked to the informal breakfast nook where his beloved was sipping coffee and listening to the radio news reports.

“Come, Rin.”

“K,” she said sleepily, and taking his arm, walked back down to his office.

She redialed the number, careful not to make a mistake. His heart rate increased with each shrill ring. After nearly a full minute, a foreign voice, light and out of breath could be heard.

“This is Kagome, may I help you?” Rin's eyes shot open, now wide awake.

“Hello, Kagome, this is Rin! You may not remember me, but we met when I came to visit with my college about five years ago. I stayed at your friend Sango's house for my winter break.”

A brief pause ensued, but it felt forever to both human and youkai.

“Yes, of course, Rin,” the voice began, a little hesitant. “It's been so long! What brings you to call?”

Rin breathed in, visibly calming. “Well, I was thinking about taking another trip to Japan and was hoping you could give me a little information. You were always so helpful and friendly.” She looked at her fiancé before continuing. “I heard on the radio that they are still arresting hanyou in Tokyo. Is that true in your neighborhood? Do you know anyone who has been arrested?”

“Not personally,” the other woman replied. “We had some violence a couple weeks ago; I think there was some trouble involving the night guards. But as far as I know, no one arrested or killed.”

Rin smiled at her love, and reached out for him. He took her small hand in his and stood to the side of her chair. His brother was alive.

“Well, Kagome, that's just swell. Um,” Rin began, unsure of how to broach the topic. Sesshomaru heard the unease in her voice and turned to nod his head in encouragement.

“Should I expect you to come anytime soon, Rin?” The girl could be heard asking.

“Well, that's the thing Kagome, I was told it's a real hassle to enter or leave Japan now. I have a passport, but I guess that everyone going in and out,” she emphasized out, “is being held over a two day period.”

“Why is that?” The faceless voice asked softly.

“Have you heard about a hanyou's human night?” Rin tried to keep a conversational tone.

“No, I haven't and why would it affect travel?” Sesshomaru thought the girl's voice seemed a bit more on edge.

“Well, basically, all hanyou have one day a month in which they turn human and I guess that's how they have been getting out with fake passports. Just waiting for their human day. But they can't do that anymore because everyone is going to be held for observation before they can leave. Do you understand?”

Silence. “Yes. I do. When do these nights typically land on, so that I can better prepar-er- protect myself?”

“Well, they could be day or night, but I used to know a hanyou that had his on the night of the new moon. As soon as the sun would go down and until it went up, he looked just like a regular guy.”

“What a coincidence, the new moon’s only a week away, I think.”

“Funny, isn't it? Kagome, I hope I didn't call at an inconvenient time?”

“No, just...finishing something up.”

“Kagome, I was wondering if I could send you some money so that in the event I did come and stay for a visit, you could purchase food and clothes and things that I may need so I don't have to take a big suit case. Would money help?”

“It would, yes, but I share an account with my...um, my boyfriend. He oversees my finances and I would have to speak with him first. If you call back again I can give you a more definitive answer.”

“That's wonderful, Kagome. I'm very glad I got to speak to you. My partner wants me to tell you since you helped me before, that if you were to come visit here, we would be so very happy. In fact, we would insist on you coming.”

“I will keep that in mind. I have to go now, Rin. Something came up earlier and I didn't get a chance to eat dinner. I feel hungry enough for two. I don't know what's going on, but I seem to have gone through a case of Ramin in just two weeks. Strange.”

Rin laughed, amused that Kagome had caught on and was engaging her in such a playful way. Inuyasha would be fine while in her protection, barring some unforeseen circumstance. “Oh, you have no idea! I have the same problem. One month I went through three cases. I won't keep you any longer. But I will call again Kagome, thank you for your help.”

“I’ll tell anyone who doesn’t know about the new restrictions."

Rin waited until Kagome disconnected first and set down the telephone.

“So.”

“So?”

“Can you rest a little easier now? Inuyasha's alive, not dead, not arrested, and apparently eating Kagome out of house and home.”

“But what of this boyfriend?”

“You know as much as I do. But she obviously has it worked out, Sessh. Come on. Let’s go tell Sango and Miroku.”

Sesshomaru placed a hand to the small of her back, and led them both out of the office.
