The villagers were angry. They’d caught her again and given her the daily beating. After all, as the ‘scapegoat’, whatever that was, she needed to fulfill her duty. She didn’t understand it, but mama had always told her to be a good girl and she had promised. Plus, her wounds healed, all wounds did. She was just waiting for someone to love her again. She could wait. Someone was in the forest. A beautiful man with a crescent moon on his forehead and long, silver hair. She could see his pain. They were the same-unloved. He frightened her. He knew she was there. She ran. Later she approached him, curious now. He was like her, and mama had told her never to judge others. She had collected food for him and brought water. She would help this beautifully strange man. He would be her secret. He ignored her at first, ordered her to leave second and finally talked to her. How she wished she could reply. But she couldn’t, her voice was stolen from her-something had stolen it. Something she couldn’t actually remember. He didn’t eat her food. Maybe fish would do than? He needed to eat, if he didn’t he might die. She was at a loss, should she take a fish? I mean, food was for everyone right? Her instincts said yes, and it wasn’t guilt that held her back, it was the malice of the villagers. She wasn’t worth giving real food to. She had to eat what was given to her, and nothing more. She did nothing for the village--but what about the scapegoat job? she had to wonder. Ah, but girls were not supposed to think, they just did. That’s what the doctor always told her when he took her into his hut. She didn’t like the doctor. He wasn’t nice and he did the strangest experiments on her. She didn’t like them either. She had run away from the village, but he’d catch her again if she went to get the fish…She would risk it. The man didn’t eat the fish either. The villagers had caught her. The doctor had caught her. Luckily, he’d been interrupted and so she ran. At least she’d managed to save the fish too. The beautiful man asked her what happened. Only he mattered now. How her heart soared. Someone cared for her-if only slightly. She wouldn’t give it up for the world. There were howls behind her, and the smell of freshly spilt blood. She needed to get back to protect the golden-eyed man. He was hurt and the wolves were coming. Something tripped her, she went sprawling. Pain exploded in her knees and elbows but she ignored it and tried to get up. It was too late. Fangs and claws ripped into her, shredding her fragile skin. But it was her twisted neck that ultimately ended it for her. She only hoped the beautiful man would stay safe…She awoke in his arms and his beauty overwhelmed her. She was alive with him.
