InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Hidden Past, Hidden Self ❯ D-K9 and Devastate part I ( Chapter 28 )
[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]
I do not own any of the original InuYasha characters in this fanfic. However, my friends and I own the OC's. I own Kane-Sakura, Setsuna, Trowa, and Ren-Tao. Steph owns Mika and Nakura, Nicky owns Michi and Ori, and Danielle owns Yuki.
Fellow InuYasha fans and those who enjoy reading this fanfic!! The following two or three chapters are special chapters that I never planned on putting in this fanfic. The first two will involve a special presentation for all the girl characters, with a little bit of the guys added for flavor and pizzazz. The chapter following that will be something involving two of the other characters from this fanfic, Michi and Ori. The reason I'm telling you this is because these chapters are very special and I put a lot of work into them; I'm proud of them because they turned out ten times better than I had first expected when I started them. And that last chapter you read? I spent a long time on that one, even though it isn't the longest chapter I've ever written. I completely rewrote the love scene between Setsuna and Kane-Sakura, and it literally took a gallon of sweat to beat that one out of my brain. Believe me, it really was a gallon of sweat, working in humid, 90-degree weather w/o air conditioning.
If anyone is reading this, please tell me how you liked that last chapter. I'm also very proud of that chapter since I actually wrote a lemon that sounded almost like a real romance novelist (at least I think I did). Please send me an e-mail or give a review. I'd greatly appreciate it.
Chapter 28: D-K9 and Devastate part 1
That same day, after returning from their journey, the group of demons and demi-demons decided to head back to the future to continue their education at their high school. Kane had missed an entire week of musical practice, and was making up for it in the band room when a turn of events took place…
Kane sang, knowing that her voice not only carried beauty, but power now. As she did, she thought about her lines for the play, and where her husband was. `Setsuna's late for lessons, again.' She sighed after hitting a wrong note.
Mika's head popped into the room. “Kane, have you seen Michi and Yuki?” Her face was red, embarrassment an obvious reason to be hunting them down.
Kane pointed to the drum set. “They ran in here a little while ago and are hiding behind the drums.”
To prove this, Michi stood and yelled, “You weren't supposed to give us away!”
Mika cracked her knuckles angrily. “You think you could've hidden from me forever after asking me about Nakura's anatomy and how I observed it? You two are so dead!” She lunged, but Kane caught her.
“Heel…” Her head smacked into a chair as she rammed into the floor. “Now Michi and Yuki, you know Mika hates it when you ask her personal questions about her love life.”
“We did nothing of the kind!” Michi stated, putting her hand on the drum set angrily. “We were interested only for educational…”
“Careful Michi!” Kane warned. “Those drums aren't mine! And if you break them, you'll owe the school a lot of money!”
Like she had touched a hot surface, her hands flew off of the drum she had hit. Then curiosity got the better of her. “What are these for anyway?”
“You use them to keep the beat with. But only rock bands or, in our school's case, jazz bands use a drum set like that. Marching bands couldn't carry something like that around easily.” Kane flipped a page back on her octavo and found her starting pitch. As she sang it out, Yuki hit a strange note on the keyboard and threw her off. “Yuki!”
“Gomen…” She said, too occupied in the instrument to care if Kane was angry or not.
“Why are you all here anyway? Do you have something to do here or are you just loitering?” Kane asked, finding her pitch yet again, but losing it when an awful note from an electric guitar made her flinch. “Oh now what?!”
Mika held the guitar like a pro, but sure as hell didn't sound like one. Note after picked note was really sharp and it squealed in the amplifier. “This thing is cool!” She picked a few more awkward notes. “What is it?”
“A guitar; a stringed musical instrument that often has the shape of an eight and is hollow.” Kane held up her own guitar. “Well, at least mine does. Since the one your holding is an electric guitar, it's not hollow and it has a shape more for a rock band.” Kane walked over to Mika and showed her how to hold it right. “If you put your first finger on the second string of the first fret, the second finger on the fourth string of the second fret and the third finger on the third string of the second fret,” She put her fingers in place, then strummed the strings by the body with a guitar pick. “You get an A minor chord.”
Mika did the same, and the amplifier copied the notes Kane had played. “Not that much to it.” She tried various other chords, testing them out and finding ones that sounded good.
“Sorry I'm late!” Setsuna ran in and gave Kane a light peck on the lips. “Like I said, I hate Japanese lit.”
“Stayed after again?” She asked.
“A test. I had to make it up from our week of absence.” He heard the odd rhythm Michi was banging out on the drum set. “Hold on…” Kane watched him walk over to Michi and take the drum sticks from her. She seemed upset at first, but he took out a lesson book, gave her a quick lesson and an example to follow. Soon, she was practicing it like she had been for years.
“When did you learn to play drums?” Kane inquired when he came strolling over.
“I don't know how to play. My friend Aki gave me some pointers one day when I asked what he was doing and I taught them to her.” He paused when Mika and Michi started playing together. It sounded a little shaky, but it sounded like an authentic rock song.
“Wow, guys that sounded really good.” Kane applauded. “You sounded like a real band.”
Yuki picked up a bass guitar. “What's this?”
“It's a different kind of guitar known as a bass guitar. It's plugged into an amp like Mika's is, but it isn't strummed.” Kane held her own and strummed out a few chords, along with the beginning of a song. “Instead, you pluck them one by one, making a really low sound that follows the beat.” She then plucked them one by one to show Yuki.
“Oh, I see.” She copied the movements and was playing on her own in no time. Kane took off and strummed her own notes, following Michi's drum beat and Mika's own chords. Mika became overly confidant and played over Kane. Her notes were all over the place, but they fell into place easily. Before they fell apart because of Michi losing her beat, they had managed to rock for almost two minutes.
As they laughed and played around, the band teacher came in and clapped his hands excitedly. “Bravo! Are you guys members of a local band?”
“No, not really.” Kane stated. “Why do you ask?”
“You sounded professional and together, like you've been playing for years. How long have you been together as a band?”
“As I said earlier…”
“Two minutes!” Michi exclaimed animatedly, twirling the drum sticks in her hands and hitting the cymbals.
“You were fantastic. I think you guys should sign up for the band contest over in Nagasaki. The grand prize is free equipment for all of your members and a chance to record your works in a studio.”
Kane's eyes lit up. `Us? Rock stars? It's like I'm dreaming!' “Hey, if we really work hard on this, maybe we could do it! You know what, sign us up!”
***
Mika lay on Kane's bed with her head hanging upside-down. “You know what, sign us up!” Mika mimicked in a high falsetto. “Are you insane!? We played together for two minutes! What makes you think we could play a whole song?”
“I think we can. We played together for two minutes only after you had just learned to play an electric guitar, Michi the drums, and Yuki the bass! Most bands need to learn for months, even years how to follow each other; we did it in two minutes!” Kane lounged in my window seat, gazing up at the stars. “I can write and compose the songs, you'll just need to play them.”
“Don't we need vocals, background vocals, and oh let's see, our own equipment?” She rolled onto her belly. “We don't have any amplifiers, no mics, no drum set, no guitars except for yours, and no keyboard.”
“The band teacher's letting us borrow the stuff we need. And background vocals? We're covered already.” Kane pointed at the wolf demon. “You guys!”
“And lead vocals?”
“Well, me I guess.”
“Why you?”
She shrugged. “Well, I'm in chorus, and I've gotten national recognition for my voice.” Standing up from her seat, she moved over to her desk, sat and went through some of her papers. “Plus, you got lead guitar.”
“I guess I see your point. But doesn't that mean we have to sing harmony all of the time?” Mika sat up.
“Not all the time. Sometimes I'll free-style and you guys will do the melody.” Kane stretched happily.
“We'll need a name.”
Kane's brow furrowed. “What do we all have in common?” She inquired. “Besides the fact that we're all at least half-demon.”
“I'm a wolf, you're a dog, Michi's a coyote, and Yuki's part dog.”
“So something to do with canines and demons.” Kane sighed.
“Demon dogs?”
“No, sounds like it's been taken. How about Kimmy? You know, spelled K-M-M-Y.”
Mika made a disgusted face. “Where the hell did you pull KMMY out of demon canines?!” She gagged. “Sounds like some little girl's pop group!”
“It's the first letters from our names. Kane, Mika, Michi and Yuki.” Kane stated. “But you're right; it's too young.” They sat in silence for a couple more minutes until Mika sighed in exasperation. “What?”
“This isn't working.”
“It's a name! At least you don't have to write the songs!”
“Hey, it's your fault we're in this mess!”
I know, but you don't realize what potential we have as a band!” Kane stood. “You guys caught on so easily when you started playing your instruments. I took lessons for years and you learned in a few minutes almost everything I know!” They were silent again until Mika said something inaudible. “Come again?”
“D-K9.” She stated. “Demon canines.”
“D-K9?” Kane let it sink in and played with in on her tongue. “D-K9! That's it!” She jumped up and tackled a very surprised wolf demon. “You're a flippin' genius!”
“I know I am, but what are you?” She said sarcastically.
“Happy you thought of D-K9! I'll go tell everyone else!” Kane ran out of the room to tell the others and call the boys up.
Mika sat on the bed and sighed. `Maybe she's right; maybe we can do this.'
***
As she sat at her desk, Kane read over the category choices for the contest. “Modern rock, Latino, R&B and pop.” She sighed. “Modern rock is probably our only choice. We don't do Latino or R&B. Maybe pop if we're lucky.” She went on to the rules and almost shredded the registration paper. “God damn it! Our own piece along with a previously released song?! What's wrong with these people?!” She paused to listen to the other girls as the rehearsed the part of the song she'd already completed, then continued with the rules. “`Both selections must be of a different category than the other.'” Kane slammed the papers down onto her desk and sauntered over to her window seat.
A gentle knock came to the door. “Kane, we're ready for you.” Yuki opened the door and saw the sour expression on Kane's face. “I take it you're not ready for us.”
“No, I'm finished with my part of the song and it sounds great on my laptop; I just read the rules for the contest. We need our own original song along with an already released song in another category!” She growled lightly.
“Is that bad?”
“Bad?! It's horrible! We only know how to play the guitar, drums, keyboard and bass. All the other categories involve instruments we can't play!” Kane sighed in regret. “Maybe we should just drop out of the con…”
“No way!” Mika yelled, leaning against the door frame. “We don't just quit because it isn't going our way! Besides, you got us into this!”
“So I've been told.”
Michi popped her head in. “That's just Mika's way of saying she likes this too much and doesn't want to stop.”
“Yeah, so what if it is?” Mika put her guitar in front of her and strummed a loud E chord. “This is fun!”
Kane shook her head. “You guys, I know you took easily to playing your instruments, but the things we need for another category are much harder than the ones you already learned. We would need some techno machines, violins maybe, trumpets…”
“First of all, what are the other categories?” Mika inquired.
“Pop, R&B and Latino. We're already doing modern rock for our original song.”
“What's R&B?” Michi inquired.
“Rhythm and Blues. For that, it requires a ton of techno and harmonies up the ass.”
“Pop?” Mika put her guitar behind her back again.
“You've all heard some of the J-pop songs on the radio, that's what we'd be dealing with. It's basically the same instruments, but a lot less electric guitar, more acoustic and keyboards. Often times, violins, harmonicas, trumpets and the like are heard in those songs. They're more up-beat songs with themes all about love and heartbreak. Kind of young for us.”
“What was the last one?” Michi twirled her drum stick in her gloved Kazaana hand.
“Latino. I'm not even going to get started on that one. All I'm gonna say is it isn't really us.”
Mika thought it over, and then said, “I say we go with R&B.”
Kane's eyes widened. “Don't you think that's too tough for us? I'd say we have a better chance of running into Ren-Tao right now than performing a published R&B song successfully.”
Mika shrugged. “I think we'll be fine. I'll start doing research on line while you guys start practicing the song you wrote.”
The hanyou sighed. “Okay, but you'll also get the equipment we'll need.”
“No problem.” She left the door way, smirking.
***
“One, two, three, four…” Michi hit her drum sticks together as she counted. After four, she started playing the beat Kane had set up for her and even free-styled to make it sound better.
“Good Michi. Now Yuki, start on the keyboard.” Kane ordered.
She pressed the play button on the keyboard to start the violin background music and then played the piano parts.
Kane smiled. “That's how the beginning sounds,” Then she thought it over. “Actually, Michi drop the drum part up to measure ten, after `My, oh my'.” Kane paused to let Michi make notes in her music and cross stuff off. “Okay, let's go through the first two measures.” Yuki played her keyboard again for two counts of four. “Much better, doesn't it sound more dramatic?”
“Yeah it does. Hey, Kane I have another suggestion.” Yuki said.
“What is it?”
“I went through your song in my head and thought maybe the jazz piano isn't the best sounding one for this song. I thought maybe the grand piano sound would be better.” She switched it and played the two measures again.
“Great idea!” Kane marked some notations in her music. “Let's go a little further, up to measure ten, no singing.”
As Yuki played her keyboard, Kane strummed her guitar and sang the words in her head. They came to measure ten and stopped for corrections. “Yuki, really bring out that grand piano. I couldn't hear you all that well.”
“Question, when do I pick up my bass guitar?”
Kane walked over and pointed at her music. “Actually, put it behind your back like mine is right now so that it's easier to start playing it. After measure ten, you stop playing keyboard and switch to bass at about fifteen.”
Mika walked out of her room. “How's it going?”
“We're working out some glitches.” I commented. “How's the song search going?”
“I found only one song that I liked, but I'm not entirely sure if it's R&B.” She picked up her guitar again. “It's called `Lady Marmalade'.” Kane smacked her forehead. “It's not an R&B song?”
“No, it is. It's just the hardest one out there. Why that one?”
“I noticed that there were four voice parts and some instruments that we can already play.”
Replaying the song in her head, Kane stated, “Actually, the instruments you heard are distorted guitar chords. We'd have to pre-record the instrumentals and then sing it while…” She paused. “…while not playing the instruments!” She ran into her room, grabbed the rules and ran back out. Reading them over again, she jumped for joy. “We can do that if desired for the previously released song category! Mika, you're a genius!”
“Again?”
“Okay, we'll work on that later. Today we practice our song, tomorrow we start on `Lady Marmalade'.” Kane stepped in front of her mic. “No vocals today, just instruments. Hit it Michi!”
***
One week later…
Kane picked up a plaid pleated skirt. Holding it up against her hips, she asked, “What about this?”
Everybody else did a thumbs down. “It's not you.”
“Well, what would you guys dress me in?” She inquired, frustrated that they had turned rejected all of her items. “We're a rock group; we need clothes that are totally off the wall!”
“Everything you've shown us is too `off the wall'.” Mika stretched. “None of them suit you.”
“Then what does?”
“Maybe Hot Topic isn't the best place to shop.” Michi stated. “Why don't we go to PacSun?”
“That's Western style; you know from the United States? Hot Topic is rock and only rock.” Kane argued.
Yuki picked up an off shoulder tee. “How about we get the shirts and accessories here and the jeans at PacSun? I heard they have awesome jeans.”
“That's not half-bad.” Mika picked up some rubber bracelets in black and yellow and looked them over. “I do like the shirts here and the accessories are really good.”
As they talked and picked out tops and accessories, Setsuna, Ori and Nakura walked into the store. Spotting his wife, Setsuna separated from his group and tapped Kane on the shoulder. “Hey Kane; I didn't know you shopped here.”
“Oh Setsuna.” She hugged him and moved them from the others so they could talk. “We're looking here for our concert in two weeks.” Kane looked down at the bag he was carrying. “What did you buy?” She reached down to peek.
He moved it away from her. “Just stuff.”
“Hmm…what kind of stuff?”
“It's nothing important.” He stated rudely. “Anyway, when can I see you again?”
“You're looking at me right now.”
He laughed. “No, I mean in private. I want you in my be…”
Kane covered his mouth with her hand. “Shh! They don't know what we did, remember?”
“But Kane…” He said through her hand.
“Uh-uh. No more until we're married.” She looked over at her friends. Seeing that they were preoccupied with selecting tops, Kane pressed her lips to his. “I'm sorry, but we have to wait. We don't have a place of our own that we could have privacy in.”
“What about the Feudal Era?”
Kane shook her head. “Sorry, but if we don't want suspicion raised amongst the group, we shouldn't do anything risky.”
“Hey Kane, we need your opinion on a shirt!” Michi called over to Kane.
Setsuna smiled. “I'll see you later. Want to go out tonight?”
“Where?”
“We'll find a place when tonight comes.”
Kane turned to walk away and looked over her shoulder. “It's a date.” She strolled over to her friends and picked up a shirt that had immediately caught her eye. “Hey guys, I know just the kind of outfits we need for this group!”
***
Kane cat walked past her friends as she stepped out of her room in her outfit. “Well, what do you think?” She twirled around in her black All-Star Converse shoes. The jeans were hip-hugging Tilt's that had not only the faded look, but the `worn-too-many-times' style with rips and fringes on the knees, thighs and calves. She wore a red ribbon in the belt loops that was tied in a loose knot. And finally, her shirt was a midriff red tube-top with a black fish net tank top. She wore silver zipper earrings on her dog ears that were accompanied with silver hoops.
“Oh Kane, you look great!” Michi jingled as she clapped her hands. She wore earrings with hoops that dangled off the main hoop that hung from her ear. She had wrist warmers that were black and red to go with her red off-the-shoulder tee that said, `Feel The Rhythm!' in black lettering and had a drum set beside the lettering. Her black pants were simple, but were accentuated with a chain belt. Then she had chosen Japanese style wooden block sandals to top off her outfit.
“Do you really think so?” Kane turned to show them the little flame on her jeans left pocket.
Mika stood in her black mini skirt and red leather tank with a very low cut v-neck that met in the middle and split off again be her belly button. “Setsuna'll love to see you in that.” She noted, twirling the chain hanging off her belt loop around her hips.
“How was he brought into the conversation?!” Kane put her hands on her hips. “He isn't in our band!”
Yuki peeked her head out of her bedroom. “Ready for me?”
Kane said, “Heel!” Mika fell to the floor, and then said, “Yeah, come on out.”
“Aw great! My shirt's ruined!” Mika complained from the floor.
“Don't worry, I'll bet Nakura will only rip it up later anyway.”
“Stay…”
Yuki stepped out of her room, her feet covered by her black and white sneakers. She had black and red striped knee socks and her white shorts were fringed and came down not even mid-thigh. And her shirt was amazing; the way it fit her was absolutely perfect. It was a black tube top with white lettering that said, `The Girl Can Rock!'. On her arms, she wore plastic stretchy bracelets and guitar earrings. “Well, is it okay?”
“From my position on the floor, you look awesome.” Kane said sarcastically. “Michi, what do you think?”
“She looks great!” Michi was very excited and she ran up to her and hugged her. “I can't believe we perform in two weeks!”
Kane dusted herself off as she stood, and then remembered the gifts she'd gotten the whole group. She ran from the room and into hers. In her desk drawer were four little white boxes. When she returned, she handed each girl one box. “I think each of our outfits are missing something, so I got these. Go on, open them.”
They opened the boxes and Michi's face lit up instantly. “D-K9 pendants!” She picked up the black leather choker with a silver colored pendant with funky letters, `D-K9'.
“Uh-huh. I had them made not long after Mika came up with the name.” She smiled as everybody put their personalized necklaces on.
Mika took her hair our from under her choker and smoothed it out. “Enough of this; we need to get going on our song.” She strolled over to her guitar and plugged it into her amplifier and strummed a chord. “Last time I checked, we have a concert coming up and another song to record in the morning.”
“She's right.” Kane said, putting the guitar strap over her head. “If we don't practice, we won't win that chance to become famous. Who's ready to rock?” Everybody punched their fists into the air as Michi started the four-count with her drum sticks.
