Kagome arrived at work early like she always did so she could get a head start on her work, there were always things to do at the shelter, and Kagome always was the one to get them done.
Soon they would officially open up and since it was the weekend there would most likely be families looking to adopt dogs and cats for their children or companions for those who were single. Kagome had been working there almost four years so she knew all the types of people that came in with all types of reasons for wanting a pet to smother with love when they needed an outlet. There were the elderly who found it relaxing to have a cat or old dog by their side, children loved to have someone to play with and use as characters in their games, couples who did not yet have children and were looking for something else to nurture, and singles (mostly women) who would get something to love and tell all their deepest secrets to like they were best friends. If Kagome ever had to be put into one of those rough main categories she would most likely be the single woman who would spend her days with one friend she knew would always be there for her no matter what, she had always wanted someone to talk to that would stay quiet and always be there, but her father would never allow it.
The bucket of dog food she carried down the hallway weighed a ton to Kagome as she scooped generous amounts of kibble into the dog's dishes. There were lots of dogs looking for homes, most of them accepting and starving for love and hugs, and Kagome would have given anything to take one home with her. Since she couldn't she would take time every morning as she fed the dogs to greet them and give them hugs in return for very slobbery kisses.
She must have taken longer than usual to finish her morning greeting to the dogs because people already started coming in looking at new pets while Kagome finished her duties. Kagome stood there the whole time like a ghost never noticed by anyone as they looking over the rows of dogs in the kennel.
Kagome finished her feeding duties quickly so she could get out of the way and got up to the front where she was supposed to be for a while before she got to groom the dogs. She was supposed to be the cheery girl who always said `good morning or `have a nice day' then go on and on about the benefits of adopting one of their animals like an annoying flight attendant happy teenager (die flight attendants!). No one actually likes a girl like that unless you are looking for a cheerleader/jock pairing and not many people actually liked being bugged and nagged like that especially early in the morning even if she did get her fair share of happy preppy families coming in for pets who were frighteningly naïve when it came to sarcasm.
Sitting incredibly bored at the front counter she began just staring into space when a voice brought her back to earth, “Excuse me miss.”
A young man about Kagome's age stood staring at her in slight amusement, he had probably been watching her sit there with her head in the clouds for quite some time, and seemed to think is was quite odd. He was a tall boy around the same high as InuYasha with a slim muscular build and dark brown hair pulled back into a high ponytail. He almost looked human if it weren't for the long brown tail that hung around the backs of his knees and the slightly pointed ears. She had heard of demons like him, wolf demons, they were known to look more like humans than most other demons but were also known for being fairly full of themselves.
“Sorry,” Kagome said quickly blushing slightly, “How may I help you?”
“I saw a sign in the window that says you guys are looking for help, I just moved here and I need a part time job. Do you have a number or someone here I can talk to about this? I have a resume in my pocket too if you need it,” the wolf youkai boy said trying not to look like he was going to laugh again.
“I'll give the resume to my boss,” Kagome glanced at the paper, “Kouga Wolfe, she will call you about it later.”
Even Kouga who had only just met Kagome could tell she was determined to say as little as possible to him or anyone for that matter so smiling he decided just to be friendly, “So what kind of things would I be doing here?”
Kagome shrugged slightly, “Dog grooming, feeding dogs, helping people find dogs, taking calls, running the counter, mowing the lawn out back, and I think there is some wood that needs to be piled.”
“You like dogs,” Kouga asked cocking an eyebrow.
Is that supposed to be some sort of joke or is her hitting on me, she wasn't sure but she blushed slightly without even knowing it as she nodded slightly.
“What school do you go to?”
“Shinkon high.”
“Me too I just transferred there,” Kouga gave a smile and a small laugh but Kagome just stared at him so his smile soon melted away leaving that tense awkward feeling behind it, “Anyway I start there on Monday and of course I don't know anyone so I was thinking maybe if I see you on Monday you could show me around. After all if your boss decides to hire me then we'll be working together and I would really like to have at least one friend I can count on in this town.”
Trying not to role her eyes Kagome couldn't help but think, something tells me he has a little more than friendship on his mind but why would he be hitting on me anyway? I'm not that pretty, and he seems to be the shallow type…
“I'm sorry Miss what did you say your name was again,” Kouga gave a smile showing off the fact that he had fangs like it was supposed to be some big turn on. Actually it gave Kagome the creeps, like he was the big bad wolf from a children's story, the kind that would eat her whole.
“I didn't,” Kagome muttered meekly, “but my name is Kagome Higurashi.”
Still giving that same wolfish smile he held out his hand for a handshake, “Nice to meet you Kagome, by the way cute glasses, they really suit you well.”
Mr. Taisho said the same thing, Kagome thought as she accepted the handshake rather timidly, his handshake was firm and harsh, it hurt Kagome's shoulder, it definitely felt better when he said it.
“So um Kagome I hope you don't think I'm a dork for asking this, I know we just met and all, but I think your really pretty and I was wondering,” Kouga held his breath in for a minute before letting his words out all in the same breath, “Wouldyougooutwithme?”
“I'm sorry,” she mumbled not believing her ears.
Taking another deep breath and putting on a charming none wolfish smile he said it again, this time making his words perfectly clear, “Would you go out with me?”
For a moment Kagome was completely stunned and the look on her face begun to worry Kouga slightly, “I'm sorry I must seem like a total moron, just forget I ever said anything Kagome, I don't want to make you feel on the spot or anything here. You know sometimes I don't think about other people before I open my big mouth…”
“No it's not that, its just that I have never had someone ask me out before,” the raven haired girl blushed deeply thinking about her teacher Mr. Taisho and how she wished that he actually wanted to dance with her, “I'm sorry if I offended you but I would need to think about it first.”
The wolfish smile resurfaced, he seemed to be proud of his abilities to act sweet when needed, and it made Kagome wonder what he was really like when he wasn't acting sappy. She wouldn't say what she was thinking to his face, not to a youkai, they were hated yes but people feared things with power greater than their own. Kagome was not sure whether to be afraid of the wolf demon or just cautious, but that was not saying much for Kagome because she never really trusted anyone so she was not sure to trust her own instincts. Kagome still couldn't get over the fact that someone had called her pretty then actually asked her out on a real date!
After a moment of Kouga grinning at her Kagome was about to say something when she heard one of the other part time students yelling for her, “Kagome come here quick Pumpkin is having her puppies but I think something's wrong!”
Not even thinking twice about what she was doing Kagome turned tail and ran into the back where they had been keeping the pregnant dog that had been bred and was staying temporarily at the shelter. As she ran through the door to the back rooms she caught a glimpse of the amused look on Kouga's face, he had a warm smile when he had heard how concerned Kagome was for a dog in labor, he knew he wasn't wrong in choosing her. He would see her later than day either way so he took his leave.

The dog had four babies already but she seemed to be having a little trouble with the fifth puppy. Kagome had only ever watched the vet that worked at the shelter help deliver babies and she had no idea why the girl had come to her for help but the girl seemed to shaken with panic that she would have gone to a visitor in the main lobby for help if she had to. No one liked disturbing the vet unless it was absolutely necessary since she was always busy with the amount of animals they took in.
Pumpkin was a white Eskimo Spitz (I have one of these dogs they are so cute, though mine is a cow a heart) that reminded her a lot of Mr. Taisho, but right then was not the time to think of such things, she had to think about the poor dog.
“Kagome I don't know what to do, the vet is out treating some horses in a farm out of town and we weren't even expecting these puppies until next week,” the girl panicked chewing her nails right down to the nail bed, “Kagome what are we going to do we don't know anything about puppy birth! What if something is seriously wrong here and the mother dies!”
“Calm down,” Kagome whispered to the girl, her co-worker tended to always over react about everything, “We can't do anything if we don't have our head on strait.”
No matter what she said to the girl she continued to panic while Pumpkin was in pain, she didn't know what to do, she couldn't concentrate on anything at all. Acting purely out of instinct she knelt down beside the dog and ran her hand gently along her stomach, and an odd sensation crept up her arm. It was like she could sense her pain and she could pinpoint exactly where it was originating from, so her hand followed a path along the dog's furry stomach until it reached a curtain spot. Kagome wasn't sure at all what she was doing but she applied slight pressure at the point and a soft pink glow appeared at her finger tips making the muscles in that spot relax and the baby began to come out of the dog.
“Did you see that,” Kagome pulled her hands away and stared at them while Pumpkin tended to her own puppies since she was out of pain, What was that? I have never done anything like that before but where did it come from?
“See what,” Kagome's co-worker asked, who had now stopped panicking and begun her fawning over the new born puppies.
“That pink light, I could feel something and then suddenly it was like I could heal what had been hurting Pumpkin,” the young raven haired girl whispered in pure disbelief, it seemed that the other girl had been so busy panicking she didn't even noticed Pumpkin's miraculous recovery, nor did she even question it, “I don't even know how I did it. I just felt I really needed to help Pumpkin and suddenly I could, it was the oddest sensation, but I liked it.” Kagome had never ranted about something so much in her life but the feeling had made her feel wide awake and energized even though she had a rough night and she had been in terrible pain herself. She blinked looking at her hand, then the puppy that had been born thanks to her, “That puppy's name is Myou.”
“Kagome you know we don't name the puppies, one day these puppies will be adopted by a family and they will name it.”
The little white puppy squeaked and it was almost as though it was speaking to Kagome, she was sure she heard it say its own name, “Myou…”
Pumpkin looked at the runty little misfit puppy Kagome had saved and gave a low growl making Kagome's co-worker shriek, “What is wrong with Pumpkin? She has always been such a good mother to her puppies before why is she acting this way to that one baby?”
Because Pumpkin isn't its mother anymore, Kagome's mind told her at the puppy named Myou gave small yips like it was calling for her, it was like it was telling her all this, I saved the puppy. If I hadn't have stepped it then Myou would have died, I gave him some of my own life, Pumpkin will no longer accept it because it smells so different from the other puppies.
“Get me a towel,” instructed Kagome firmly to her co-worker, she was actually surprised with the demanding ness of her own voice; she had never spoken that way to anyone before.
The girl handed Kagome one of the nearby towels and gently as she could Kagome wrapped the poor little helpless infant in it to take it away from the snarling mother. The small baby squeaked making odd little grunting noises and it was almost as if Kagome could understand every little noise, “I'll need some of the formula for abandoned babies from the cupboard, I'll need you to tell the boss that I will be the one responsible for feeding it for the next few weeks.”
“Kagome are you sure about this?”
“The way I see it is if I do this and the pup lives then they should pay me overtime,” Kagome stated so bluntly and hard she was beginning to scare herself, “If not then they can deduct the price of the formula from my paycheck because right now there is no other choice. There is no one else more qualified coming here until the end of the day and this puppy needs food every 3-4 hours. My shift ends in ten minutes so I will take him home with me.”
“Ok but just one question.”
“What?”
“How do you know it's a he? You didn't look.”
“I don't know I just have a feeling, besides right now if not the time.”

Kagome walked home with the little pup wrapped up in a towel and a hot water bottle rolled up next to him to help keep him warm in the chilly air. Puppies' bodies can't regulate their own temperatures until they are almost 3 weeks old, and he wouldn't begin going off on his own until then anyway so he would just have to live by her side for the next few weeks.
I don't know what happened back there, Kagome let her thoughts run away with her again as she walked, its like suddenly I was different person, and this dog…apparently now I'm its mother. He keeps telling me that his name is Myou, its such an odd name, I wonder what it means.
Sighing she walked up to her house and was just about to open the front door when she thought of something, dad would never allow me to bring a puppy into the house, if he sees it he will make me take him back, or worse kill him. Maybe I should sneak in the back door.
Cradling her precious cargo she snuck around the back of the house looking for a way in, she found the back door leading into the kitchen unlocked and the room inside seemed deserted. She could hear voices coming from the living room but if she was quiet enough she could easily get by her dad and his special business partner guest. Kagome eased the door open and slipped inside only praying that Myou was asleep after she had fed him because if he started squeaking she would get caught.
“Kagome,” a surprised voice said from behind her making Kagome jump half out of her skin.
Kagome turned around to stare at Kouga who had been helping himself to a soda (very recently bought) from the fridge. He looked just as surprised as she did, but Kagome was the one who thought she had the more reason. After all she had an almost complete stranger standing in her living room going through her fridge for soft drinks.
“Well, well, I thought your name was familiar, I didn't think you were the Higurashi family my father was making a business deal with,” Kouga said laughing before she was shushed franticly by Kagome who was putting her finger in front of her lips. He raised an eyebrow looking at the girl but could definitely smell something odd in the towels she was carrying.
Blinking he glanced into the living room seeing that his father and her father were in deep conversation about something he hadn't bothered to follow. Then he turned back to Kagome and mouthed the words, “What are you doing?”
Kagome also glanced into the living room before motioning for Kouga to follow her down the hall towards her room and closed the door behind them.
“Kagome what is going on,” Kouga asked when he knew they were out of earshot.
The raven haired girl gave him a pleading look and showed the new born pup that was sleeping in the towel to Kouga, “I can't let my father see him, he would never allow me to take the time away from my studies to care for him, and there was no one else that was able to look after him. His mother wouldn't accept him.”
