Jaken had returned to the impromptu camp a while ago and now Rin sat happily against Ah-Un eating her pudding, while she filled a small dish with the warm milk and placed it in between Ah-Un's front legs so the kits could drink it. She smiled at her dragon friend; he would keep the kits from getting lost as she ate. She petted his rough hide and one the large heads turned to her and licked her cheek.
The young girl giggled and kissed the dragon's cheek and then finished off her pudding. Sesshoumaru watched silently from his tree as the girl played with the kits and her dragon. It never failed to amaze him when he would think back on the first meeting between those two. Most humans and even some demons would run from dragons. But not his Rin. No, he thought with a mental smile, she ran straight up to that two headed dragon and hugged the big heads to her; petted that great beast as though they were long lost friends reunited.
Gathering the bowls together, she walked down to the near by stream and washed the items in the cold water. Standing from where she was crouching at the water bed, she nearly fell over as pain from stomach cramps hit her hard. She tried to shake it off, but the pain wouldn't lessen. Afraid she was going to be sick; she walked to near by bush, her steps slow and sluggish. It felt as though she were walking upstream through rushing water, and it was so hot also. Too hot. It was too hot, Rin couldn't breathe well. She tried to call out to Sesshoumaru, but couldn't get her voice to work. She was so hot and dizzy and her stomach - the world around her went black.
Sesshoumaru frowned, the shadows from the sun had moved their direction twice and still Rin had yet to return. Standing, he walked in the direction the girl had gone, something felt horribly wrong. His steps became quicker and soon he found her lying face down in the grass, far too close to the water's edge for comfort. Moving to her side quickly, he rolled her over into his arms, and tried to wake her with no success.
“Rin,” the taiyoukai called to her, “Rin wake up.” Her skin was clammy, but on fire with fever and yet still chills shook her small frame. Lifting her eyes open he found her pupils to be nearly nothing more than pin pricks. The proud inu-youkai didn't know for sure what was wrong, didn't know what had caused this, but panic lit his heart. He could not loose his pup.
Lifting Rin in his arms and holding her tightly against his chest, he stood and gathered his oki around him, quickly forming a cloud. Moving into the sky he traveled swiftly back to their camp.
“You will guard her kits,” he spoke to Ah-Un. “Jaken, stay here.”
“W-where are you going m-me lord?” the retainer asked carefully making his face a mask of concern for the girl. This is going better than I thought Jaken thought. She'll be dead soon if all goes well.
“Rin has fallen ill; I'm taking her to Inuyasha's miko.”
“Is that wise me lord?” Jaken asked as he moved next to Sesshoumaru. “Surely she is just in need of rest.”
“Do not question me again Jaken.” Not when it comes to my pup. Never question my actions toward my pup.
He moved swiftly off into the forest, it took to long to gather his oki. His concentration was focused solely on Rin and the longer it took to reach the village, he couldn't - wouldn't think about that. Panic began to set in a he felt her already raging fever, skyrocket and he moved like lightening, reaching the old miko's hut in mere moments.
Kagome was the first to see Sesshoumaru, the first to see him unguarded as he was for that moment. The only to see the panic and worry in his eyes. She had been walking back from the well, and in the moment that she saw him, she knew something had to be wrong. He turned partially toward her and she saw Rin lying limply in his arms.
Dropping her overstuffed yellow pack she raced to the taiyoukai's side.
“What happened?” she asked as she nearly ran into him. “What's wrong with her?”
“This Sesshoumaru does not know. I - ” he closed his eyes as the effort it took to stay calm threatened to be too much. “I ask you to help her.”
“Of course, I'll do whatever I can,” she said and laid her hand upon the girl's face. No longer clammy, the young one's skin was now dry and hot, much too hot, and in that moment a decision was made. “Sesshoumaru, I ask you to trust me. It would take too long to explain everything and right now Rin doesn't have that kind of time. Just please…trust me.”
Sesshoumaru nodded once as slight tremors shook his body, no matter how much he tried to remain unaffected. He followed as she led him to the old Bone Eater's Well, and although he found it strange and troublesome, he even followed her lead and jumped into the well.
Strange magicks wrapped around him as he and the miko were pulled through the time slip, all the while he kept tight hold on his precious cargo. As they landed and he looked up, he found no sky, only a roof over head. The miko quickly climbed the ladder and he followed, jumping out of the well to stand beside her. He cringed as the doors to the well house were opened, all the sounds and smells here were stronger and more offensive, this world was not the same as the one he had left. So this was the miko's secret. She didn't live in the well, but beyond it.
“Mama! Mama!” Kagome called out desperately, and no sooner did a middle aged woman appear in from the doorway of the large house and run towards them.
“Kagome you just left what's - oh my! What happened and who's-”
“We don't have time mama. Rin's sick, really sick, she needs a doctor. Call an ambulance.”
“No. It'll be much faster if we drive ourselves. Come on.”
Mrs. Higurashi led her daughter and the beautiful stranger beside her into the house and grabbed her car keys and purse off the counter. Taking them out to her car she swiftly made sure they were all settled inside and started the car.
It took Kagome a moment to realize that the growling wasn't coming from the car, but from the youkai beside her. Placing her hand on his arm, she gently rubbed his silk clad arm and quietly assured him that all was alright.
“It's just the engine,” she spoke softly, barely above a whisper, though knowing, just as with Inuyasha, he would hear her clearly. “It's not a youkai or a beast. It won't attack…The doctor's here Sesshou-chan, they can help her. She'll be ok.”
Sesshoumaru looked at the girl beside him and finally understood what it was about her that so enchanted his brother. Youkai, hanyou, or human, it didn't matter to her, all that mattered was that they were friends. In that moment, as her scent grew stronger in an unconscious effort to comfort him, he understood. To her he wasn't Sesshoumaru-sama, feared taiyoukai of the Western Lands. No, to her he was pack, and that was all she cared about.
