~When Dawn Breaks~

 

 

By the scent of the air coming in from the slightly open window, Inuyasha could tell that it was mere minutes before dawn, but that wasn't what had roused him from his slumber. Opening his eyes he gave a soft amused huff and peered down at his sleeping son who was happily suckling away at his nipple in his sleep. Shaking his head, Inuyasha supported Shippou's body inside his clothing as he moved slowly and carefully on the bed, being sure not to wake the other two inhabitants as he moved down to the end of the bed and slipped off it.

 

He padded silently to door and slipped out unnoticed. Moving silently, he traveled down the stairs and into the kitchen, giving a soft growl as the kit's suckling grew more insistent. He missed seeing and sensing Kagome's mother as he walked into the kitchen and began looking for a bottle and something to fill it with as he talked softly with Shippou.

 

“I really don't know what you think you're gonna get outta that, but I can tell ya right now I don't make milk.”

 

He turned around when he heard a soft chuckling and found Mama Higurashi standing behind him. “I take it he trying to nurse on you?” the hanyou nodded a soft blush gracing his cheeks. “Where is he?”

 

Inuyasha turned around completely and opened the top of his haori and inner kimono showing her the head of the kit. The woman smiled brightly and took the empty bottle, with no top or nipple, from his hand and took the can of formula out of a cupboard above the counter and added two scoops of the white powder to the bottle and then filled it with warm water. Setting the filled bottle on the counter, she moved to the dish drainer and took a nipple and ring from it, snapping the nipple inside the ring she twisted it onto the bottle top. Holding the nipple with her finger, she shook the contents, mixing the water and formula into a fine liquid.

 

She handed the bottle to Inuyasha and he gently moved the kit just enough so that he was resting inside his clothing and leaning back in it's folds like a hammock, and the hanyou lifted the bottle to the kit, slipping the nipple between his lips and feeding him. Shippou hadn't even completed a full two ounces of the formula in his eight ounce bottle before a half asleep Kagome came stumbling down the stairs and into the kitchen. She sighed in relief seeing what appeared to be Inuyasha giving a bottle to his clothing, but she knew that Shippou must be tucked inside.

 

Nodding a greeting to her hanyou friend and brother she sat at the kitchen table and buried her head in her folded arms and fell back to sleep. The action earned an amused chuckle from both Inuyasha and Kashu as well as Sesshoumaru who had just arrived in the doorway.

 

Sesshoumaru smiled at his slumbering mate and walked over to the table, lifting her in his arms and sat down, sitting her in his lap and holding her against his chest as she slept. Kagome mumbled `five more minutes mom', when she moved and wrapped her arms around her mate's neck, burying her face in his chest. Kashu chuckled as did Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru shook his head with a smile and stroked her long dark hair. He buried his nose in her raven locks and took a long deep breath. Breathing in her scent he wondered if she had any inkling as to the changes that were taking place inside of her.

 

On the night of their mating ceremony when they had returned to their rooms to mate and other carnal pleasures, her own canines had elongated as he had bitten her again, reaffirming his claim and she had bitten him as well. They had not spoken of it because come morning, the mark she made on him had healed without any sign of it having been made, but her mark had cemented her scent claim on him, letting all other females know that he was off limits.

 

As he looked at her now, and breathed in her scent, he could sense the changes, and already see some of them. She had filled out more, not enough to need new clothing but enough so that he noticed. Her breasts had become fuller and her curves more pronounced, she had gained an inch or two in height, but unless one looked closely or knew her body as intimately as he did, they wouldn't notice the changes. He didn't know if she would become a youkai or not, the choice was up to her and he knew that sooner or later he would have to talk with her about this. He just didn't want to right now, and plus other things that needed to be dealt with, namely Jaken.

 

Shippou woke slowly to find himself tucked up safe and warm against a hard chest and drinking from a bottle. At first he was a little confused, but he finished the bottle down and closed his eyes as he listened to the comforting thrumming beat of the heart his pointed ear was pressed against. Inuyasha was aware that Shippou had awakened, but was content to leave to the child where he was. That was until Shippou twisted around to get more comfortable and twisted an edge of his splint in the folds of the inner haori and twisted his broken leg out of alignment.

 

“Ow, ow ow ow ow,” Shippou whimpered as he tried to untangle the splint only serving to twist it further and he yelped in pain. Inuyasha and Mamma Higurashi worked quickly to open Inuyasha's clothing and remove the kit with as little jarring as possible. Kagome had woken up at the first `ow' of pain from the kit and now she and Sesshoumaru were working to help the kit as well.

 

“It's ok baby, it's ok,” Kagome whispered as she laid Shippou on the table and Sesshoumaru worked quickly and gently to realign the break and reset the kit's broken leg. Shippou cried out as his broken bone was quickly snapped into place and Kagome covered the kit's face in kisses and didn't notice when she began purring low and nearly inaudibly in an effort to comfort her pup. “It's ok baby, mamma's here. Mamma's here Shippou.”

 

Once his bone was reset and the splint was rewrapped properly Kagome took him quickly into her arms and held him tightly to her chest being mindful of his injury. She sniffled as she buried her face in his fur and hair and rocked him back and forth as she sat down at the table. She kissed his neck and kissed his face as tears rolled down her cheeks and her son's as well.

 

“My baby, my pup,” she cried as she held him her rocking continued on. “I lost you. I forgot you. Damn Kikyou for making me forget you.”

 

“Kikyou?” Shippou asked slowly.

 

“Yes baby. It was Kikyou who cast the spell and made us all forget you…What honey what is it?” she asked when his little face screwed up in concentrated confusion.

 

He shook his head, “nothing it was just a dream.”

 

“What was?”

 

“Kikyou…and…Daddy.”

 

“That was no dream pup,” Inuyasha said as he came closer and stroked the kit's fur. “Well it was a dream but it was real. I was there.”

 

“You were really in my dream?” Shippou looked up at Inuyasha his eyes wide.

 

“You bet I was.”

 

“How?”

 

“With this,” the hanyou said and held up the jewel shard still covered in his blood and put the tiny jewel fragment in Kagome's hand where it instantly purified. “You were murmuring frightenedly in your sleep. Instead of waking you, I took that and used it to see what was happening.”

 

“Is Kikyou really gone now?”

 

“You bet she is. I killed her once outside the castle and again in your dreams.”

 

“Was she really there?” he asked with wide eyes.

 

“You know that smell she had?”

 

“The rain and flowers and dirt?”

 

“Yup. That's what she smelled like when she was alive. You couldn't have known that. She was really there in your dreams, I don't know how, but she was. She's really gone now pup. And no matter what she said don't you believe any of it. You mean more to all of us than we know how to say.”

 

“He's right Shippou,” Kagome said and the pup looked at her. “When I remembered you and we discovered you were gone, my world fell apart. I don't know how to live my life if you're not in it.”

 

Shippou looked down and away sadly. “You've got another kid though, you don't need me.” The insecurities were popping up again and he could feel the fear from the day before resurfacing anew.

 

“Hey,” Kagome said and turned his face back to hers. She kissed his brow and said, “Yeah I've got Rin, but I don't have another Shippou.” She kissed his brow again, and then both his cheeks. “I don't have another son, and even if I do give birth to a male pup, you'll always be my Shippou, my son.” She kissed his nose and eyes and then his brow and brushed her fingers through his hair. “Do you know why you mean so very much to me?” Shippou shook his head no. “Do you remember when we first met?” the child nodded. “The Thunder Brothers had taken your father's life and you were hell bent on revenge, on avenging his death. In that moment that I saw your courage, that I saw you standing bravely ready to move against them, I felt proud. I felt a mother's pride and I thought, someday when I have children, I want my son to be just like that boy, to have the strength of love in his heart. But you know what Shippou? I got something better. I have you. You are my son. I may not have given birth to you, but somehow I think our bond is stronger because of it. Because of all the hardships we've suffered, because of all the battles we've been in together. I know that this won't be an easy fix, and I know that at times you'll still be scared, but you know what? I'm not letting you out of my sight.”

 

“What?” Shippou asked.

 

“You and me, we're gonna have some just mommy and me time. Well, mommy, me and grandma maybe if you want.” Shippou nodded and Kagome laughed. “Ok mommy, me and grandma. And we'll go to the park, and the candy shop - what?” she asked with a slightly sharp edge when her mate snorted at the candy shop comment.

 

“I knew the pocky would come into this.”

 

“What's wrong with pocky?” both she and Shippou asked at the same time.

 

“You'll spoil the child and make him fat.”

 

Kagome's eyes grew wide as she calmly, a little too calmly, handed Shippou to Inuyasha. Without a second to spare she launched herself at her mate with a growl and knocked him to the ground with a growl. His golden eyes widened at her actions, when had she gotten so fast?

 

“That is my son, and if he ends up weighing five hundred pounds he'll still be my son. And you know what, he deserves to be spoiled and I want to spoil him so if you have a problem with that then you damn well better stay out of it,” she snarled and her eyes flashed a slight red for a mere second before the glow was gone and he realized that unintentionally he had become a threat to her pup.

 

“Kagome, calm yourself,” he said softly. “I meant not to come between you and your pup.”

 

Kagome sat back, releasing his wrists that she had been holding to the floor above his head and looked at him in confusion. “Huh?”

 

She was sitting upon him, straddling his hips as she stared at him in confusion. How had she ended up here, wasn't she just holding her pup? She felt him move beneath her and his arms were around her shoulders as he sat up and she slipped to sit in his lap. She took her bottom lip between her teeth and worried it as she thought about how she had gotten into this position. Sesshoumaru hugged her close and whispered into her ear.

 

“What do you remember?” he asked quietly, only his brother and Shippou hearing the words, aside from Kagome herself.

 

“Well everything. I just don't know what happened,” she looked at him confused blue meeting calm gold. “I've never felt like that before.”

 

“Like what?”

 

“Like someone was trying to take him from me. I've felt scared and protective, but it was different this time,” she began to tremble as she thought about the emotions she had felt when she had attacked him. Sesshoumaru held her tighter and hushed her as he reached out to his brother and took the kit, tucking Shippou into his mate's arms. Kagome cuddled him close and leaned into her mate's chest, her head tucked beneath his chin as he cuddled her close. “I actually thought for a second about…”

 

“About what Kagome?” the taiyoukai asked quietly.

 

“About burying my claws into you, but I don't have claws and why would I? I don't hurt people I care about why would I…” she trailed off as her trembling began anew and Inuyasha sat down behind his pack sister and wrapped his arms around her and leaned into her back as he felt one of his brother's hands reach up to scratch his ears.

 

“You were reacting as mother would Kagome, well at least a youkai mother. For a split second you saw him as a threat to your pup so you reacted in defense of Shippou.”

 

“But I'm not a youkai.”

 

“Looks like we'll be having this talk sooner than I had planned,” Sesshoumaru sighed as the sun rose and shined brightly in through the kitchen window.

 

“Talk about what?” Kagome asked.
