InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ Hitchin' a Ride ❯ Chapter One ( Chapter 1 )

Disclaimer: Inuyasha isn't mine… I wish he were… I wish a lot of things were mine… I'm not greedy; I'm needy.

This story was half-inspired by the Green Day song, Hitchin' a Ride. It isn't a song fic, though, because it doesn't follow the song that closely. The only part that is really based on the song is the `hitchin' a ride' part. And I think— but I'm not totally sure— that the lyrics have to be in the story for it to be song fic. Well to the fic!

Hitchin' a Ride: Chapter One

Kagome stood at the edge of the road with her thumb out. She had been standing there for almost two hours. Her car broke down, but she didn't care. All that she wanted was to get away. Away from the old house, the mom, the step-dad… away from the not-so-loving lover.

She didn't care about his car! She didn't care about him. He was probably home wondering where his nice warm dinner is with a opened beer can sitting on the coffee table without a coaster under it. And there was probably a bag of chips beside him with half of them on the floor, and he was probably laughing at some stupid show that he watched every night.

But his warm dinner would never come. Unless you counted a McDonald's value meal a warm meal.

Kagome was out of that house for good. She was leaving behind a world of misdoings and hatred for a new one. One in California, maybe. Or even in Texas. Or Florida! Somewhere warm.

She left them a note on the fridge saying why she had left her home in Kentucky for one far away. It said:

Dear Mom,

I know you said I couldn't leave. You always put me down after Daddy died… but not any more. I'm out! And if you're lucky I'll call from Paradise. I'm still not sure where it is… all I know is that Paradise is away from you! But don't get the idea that you're the only reason I left. No. I couldn't give you that satisfaction! Naraku helped… oh how he helped! The worthless slob! Don't forget to tell Jay that he helped in his own way, too! I don't know how I put up with all your shit for all that time! I'm gone… Tell Sota that I love him and that he will always be with me… and when he's eighteen— and if he wants to go— I'll bring him to Paradise. I know you'll probably twist what I said and tell him that he's the reason I left… that's why I left him something that you can never get to. It is legally out of your reach… and out of Naraku's and Jay's too, so don't try anything on me or on him!

Yours so un-truly,

Kagome Higurashi

Her mother walked out on her the day her dad died. Her dad and her brother were the closest people to her; one of them was dead and the other she couldn't take with her because it would be considered kidnapping. And mother dearest would definitely press the issue.

That's why she left Sota a trust fund with thirty thousand dollars in it. That was half of the money left to her and Sota in their trust fund together from their dad. Kagome, being the oldest, could get the money first. She didn't spend any of it because of Sota. She wanted them to get to it together, but since she left, their mother wouldn't get him anything nice so she left the money to him. Then, when she went and got him they could again keep their promise to their dad: Always share the money equally because you'll always need it equally.

That was the last thing he said to them before dieing. He died holding both of their hands. Sota was seven at the time and Kagome was thirteen. Now she was twenty and he was fourteen. Unfortunately, that left him with four whole years with the bastards. But she also left him with a guardian angel… well in a sense. Their neighbor, Mrs. Wilder, always looked out for the kids. She would keep them safe when their mom would go drinking heavier than usual.

-The previous day-

“Where are you going?” the aging woman asked. She put her hand on Kagome's shoulder.

“I'm not sure. When I get there I'll send you a post card.” Kagome laughed lightly. “I need a favor, and I hate to ask you for it… it might be really hard to keep. And I probably owe you thousands of favors that have accumulated over the past seven years.” Kagome looked at her in the eyes. She was being very serious and Mrs. Wilder could tell.

“Of course, whatever it is… it must be important. And, please, don't worry about all the other stuff… it's in the past now and that's where it will stay. Now, what do you need? Is it money? I can help you financially, if it is.”

Kagome showed her some of the money in her bag. “It isn't money… this is the money from the trust fund I told you about. I need you to look after Sota. If they beat him… deprive him of stuff… I want you to call Children Services and get him out of that fuckin' house as soon as you can. I want you to tell them about me. I want him if they take him out, and if I can't have him then I want you to have him. Here is my new cell phone number. I want you to keep it and call me if they do anything to my brother. I don't want those bastards to have my number either. And every night I want a call from Sota, but not from that house `cause I don't want them getting my number. Tell him to call me from a payphone or from here. I won't be able to give him a formal good-bye, so I want him to call me as soon as he gets home from school. I'll hopefully be out of here by then. Could you do that for me, Mrs. Wilder?” Kagome kept eye contact with the woman the whole time.

Mrs. Wilder was silent for a moment, but never dropped her eyes once. “Of course. And, please, call me by my first name, Keade. You're like a niece to me and you're dad was like a brother.”

-Present time-

A car slowed to a stop and Kagome ran over to the door. “My car broke down about five miles back… could you take me somewhere?” she asked the woman in the seat. She had long black hair that was up on top of her head in a formal bun, usually worn by businesswomen. She had on a navy blue skirt suit, and it matched her stormy blue eyes.

“Yes,” she said with a smile.

Kagome climbed into the black Mercedes. “Thanks, you're a real help.”

“You want me to take you to a house… gas station? I know of a car repair place not to far from here,” the woman offered. “Oh, by the way my name is Sango.”

“I don't want the car fixed. It isn't mine. It's my ex's and I could care less about it or him. I don't know anyone around here so I don't need to go to a house. It don't matter where you drop me off at; I'm not totally sure where I'm goin'. And I'm Kagome, nice to meet you.”

“Well, about how far do you need to go? I can go on forever! I'm leavin' too,” Sango said. She took the pin out of her hair and let it fall down to its full length, which was her mid back.

“What's your story? Bad marriage?” Kagome asked.

“No, I'm not married, or seein' any one. I'm just tired of my old life and I'm changin' it,” Sango said. “What's yours?”

“Bad life… my dad died seven years ago and my mom blamed me and my brother, she married a jerk, and she hooked me up with a deadbeat asshole. Pardon my French.”

“ Don't worry about your French, I don't give a damn. So where's your brother?” Sango asked.

“Unfortunately, with my mom. And I can't get him for four years! But I left him money that the other assholes can't get to.”

“I had a brother. He died in a car crash, along with my mom and dad.”

“Oh, I'm sorry.”

“Don't be. You didn't know and it wasn't your fault… actually it was a drunken fool's fault. Well now the only love I have is for my cat, Kirara.”

When the cat heard her name she sat up from the back seat. “Meooow!

“Yeah, baby, I'm talkin' to you!” Sango said to her little cat.

Kagome looked at the necklace hanging on the rear view mirror. It was a gold chain with a piece of a pink jewel attached. “That's pretty,” she said.

Sango looked at the necklace. “Oh, that was my dad's. He was an only child and his mom gave it to him… he gave it to me before my brother was born. I never go anywhere without it. I don't know about you, but I'm kinda tired. There's a motel up the highway a bit.”

“Okay.”

-1-1-1-

Okay so there's the first chapter. I've got a pretty good over view of where this is going… and I'm not as sure on about how much action it's gonna have. There will be reference to things in the anime, like the Shikon Jewel, but I don't think I'll put them as reincarnations of themselves... after I thought about it, being a reincarnation of yourself, only hundreds of years into the future, would be kinda hard to do. I don't wanna give away too much about the plot so I'll leave ya there! R&R XOXO Tormented Hanyou
