Hitchin' a Ride: Chapter Five

It was almost three o'clock in the morning and Kagome had insomnia. But Inuyasha didn't blame her. He really wanted to stop the abuse in that tortured home. But how?

“Inuyasha?” Kagome asked. Sango and Miroku were asleep in the back seat so she talked in a very low voice.

“Yeah, what is it?”

“Do you have a younger brother or sister?”

“No, but I do have an older half-brother. We don't keep in touch though. Why?” Inuyasha looked at her for a minute, then back to the highway.

“Do you know what it feels like… to have a father die?”

“Yeah. My dad died a while back.”

“Was you close to him? I don't mean to pry into your life or anything… it's just I wanna know how to deal with all this… it's really hard sometimes.”

Inuyasha sighed. “I never really knew my dad. He died in a fire a few days after I was born. He got me and my mother out and continued to fight the man that burned our house.”

“Oh, I'm sorry.”

“Don't be. You didn't know. But I was close to my mom. When she died, I thought I would. I was pretty much on my own after my mom died. I couldn't live with my brother, the arrogant ass!”

Kagome looked out the window. Inuyasha was like the exact opposite of her in some ways; she couldn't stand her mom, and he loved his; she loved her dad, and he didn't know his; she loved her brother, and he couldn't stand his. But yet she felt something for him. Something that you couldn't call love, but more like infatuation.

“Kagome,” Inuyasha said.

“Yeah?” She didn't look away from the window.

“This Naraku guy… what was his last name again?”

“Uh, Ludlow, why?”

“Um no reason…”

Kagome yawned. “So will we be to Toledo by tomorrow?” she asked.

“Yeah around three or so… I'm not sure exactly what time.”

“Why did you offer us a ride? Don't you have to be at the hospital considering that you're an intern and everything?”

Inuyasha was quiet for a moment, as if he was thinking, then he said, “Actually, they knew I wasn't gonna be there. I took some PTO. I have a week of it.” (A/N: PTO is personal time off.)

“Wow, lucky timing, right?” Kagome laughed at the irony of it all.

“Why did you trust me to take you? Why did you trust Sango and Miroku?”

“Uh… I don't know. I don't think it's very safe to trust very many people… but there is something about you… about them, that makes me trust you guys. I feel like I've known you forever. But at the same time, I feel like I just met you. You know what I mean?” Kagome looked at Inuyasha.

He looked back at her. “Yeah. I do.”

She yawned again. “Well, I think I'm gonna try and sleep.”

“Good idea.”

Although she wanted to sleep really badly, she couldn't stop thinking about her brother at all. And she didn't want Inuyasha to know that she was awake either, so she pretended to sleep. Every time she started to doze off pictures off her brother lying in a cold corner with no blanket arose in her mind. No food, no water. Nothing.

“Kagome?”

“Yeah?”

“Why aren't you asleep?”

“My brother… I…” A lone tear slipped down her face, but she forced herself not to cry. She wouldn't cry in front off Inuyasha.

“Don't worry, we'll get him.”

Kagome turned around and smiled at Inuyasha. “Thanks.”

She fell asleep soon after that, and didn't wake up when Inuyasha's cell phone rang. “Takahashi speaking.”

“Inuyasha, are you on your way yet?” a man asked. He sounded older, around fifty or so.

“Yeah, Myoga, I've got Kagome… she don't know about the Shikon incident with Naraku and Jay though, or if she has then she hasn't said anything.” Inuyasha looked over at Kagome, content with knowing that she was asleep… and safe.

“You have to keep her from them. They've killed before, and they will do it again. You need to get her brother, Sota, too. They're both at risk.” Myoga hung up his phone and so did Inuyasha.

Kagome woke up the next morning around twelve.

“'Mornin', Kagome,” Sango said. It was only them in the car.

“Mornin', Sango.” Kagome sat up and stretched. “I need a cup of coffee!” she said. Kagome looked out into the parking lot. “Why are we at Wal-Mart?”

“Inuyasha and Miroku both said they needed something… they just went in about five minutes ago.”

“Well I gotta go to the bathroom, what about you?”

“Yeah. Let's go.”

The two girls walked into Wal-Mart and saw Inuyasha and Miroku. They waved to let the guys know that they were inside and to wait. Then, they went into the bathroom.

“You really miss him don't you?” Sango asked Kagome as she went into the stall.

“Yeah, me and Sota spent just about every waking hour together. I wouldn't leave him by himself with my mom and her husband. When I would go to my friends' houses he would come.”

“I wish I spent more time with my brother before he died. We fought a lot and, well, now I wish we didn't. But we did have some really good times, and that's what I remember. I don't remember the times when he would break my stuff. I remember taking him to the park and pushing him on the swings.”

Kagome smiled although Sango couldn't see it. “That's what you should remember. I have to get to my brother before something really bad happens. I have to!”

“I know, I know,” Sango said in a soothing voice. “And we will. I'll make sure of it.”

“Inuyasha said that too. I believe you both.”

Hey! I'm actually updating on time! Well almost anyway! And I don't think this is a cliffhanger, either, but it is still pretty short. But I'll try to update later today or tomorrow. The only reason I couldn't yesterday was because I went to see my grandma because of her birthday. R&R XOXO Tormented Hanyou
