5.  Explanations

A very warm and content hanyou cracked open one golden eye as the first rays of sunlight peeked around the edge of the window covering on the east side of his home.  He resisted the urge to get up and stretch, instead wrapping himself even more tightly around the slight figure in his arms.  He could wait a while to get up, he decided.

About an hour later, the little miko in his embrace began to stir.  As she sat up, he rubbed absently at a ticklish spot on his chest.  He pulled open his robes to look for the source of the odd feeling, then whispered, “What the fu--”

With no thought for the possible consequences, he reached over to Kagome, pulling her robe off her left shoulder so he could stare at the deep red kanji located above her left breast.  The young woman’s anger turned to confusion as she followed his gaze.  “What happened?”

He shook his head, baring his chest to reveal a similar marking that nearly obliterated the only scar on his perfect skin: the mark left by Kikyou’s sealing arrow so long ago.  “I don’t know.  This is like the marks that inuyoukai mates leave on each other, but we haven’t mated.”

She smiled.  “Maybe it doesn’t really matter.  I think that our souls recognized each other as their true mates, even without taking that final step.  Maybe it happened because your father was the strongest youkai of his day, and your youki is so strong.  Maybe it happened because I’m a miko.  Maybe it happened because of your mother’s jewel.  Or maybe it happened because of some combination of all of these.”  She pulled their clothing back into place, looking more than a little pleased to see her name emblazoned across his flesh.  “I don’t really care how it happened--I’m just glad to know that we’re obviously meant to be together.”

He bent down to lightly brush his lips across her forehead.  “Maybe we can ask Myouga or Sesshoumaru next time we see either of them.”

She smiled brightly.  “I guess this goes to prove that some of the old legends have some basis in truth after all.”

He grinned.  “Fighting youkai and looking for the damned Shikon no Tama doesn’t prove that?”

She shook her head.  “I was thinking about the legend from my time that says if you confess your feelings for the one you love on Christmas Eve, your wish to be together forever will be granted.”  She turned suddenly serious.  “What will we tell the others?”

He pulled her tightly against him.  “Whatever you like.  Between them and the babaa, I think they can run enough interference with the villagers so we won’t have any real trouble.”

“But they accept us.  You saw proof of that last night.”

He shook his head, his eyes turning haunted.  “They accept you.  They also accept me, in a way.  I have no way of knowing if they will accept us.  If it gets bad, we may have to leave here.”

Her eyes turned defiant.  “If we have to leave, we have to leave.  I’d be happy living with you in a clearing in the middle of the forest.  But somehow I don’t think it’ll ever come to that.  Now,” she said, running a fingertip along the edge of his left ear, “How about some ramen for breakfast before we go to see the others?”
