“And this,” Sango pushed open a large door, “Is where I’ll be working while you handle the service desk out front.”
Kagome glanced around the elegant setting of Sango’s office, “Seems like you’ve got yourself a pretty awesome set-up here.”
“True. But that’s only because I threatened Sesshomaru I’d quit if the office wasn’t refurbished and actually inhabitable.” The former boxer shuddered, “You should have seen the state of the place when I first arrived here.”
“I’d hate to imagine.”
Glancing around the office one last time, the two women made their way back down the corridor towards the hotel’s front foyer.
“Anywhere else you want to show me today?” Kagome asked.
Sango shrugged, “There are only two places left, but I figured I’d leave them for tomorrow.” She grimaced, “Unfortunately for us, we’re going to have to actually start working pretty soon before the rush comes.”
Giving a nod of understanding, Kagome smiled. “If only there was a job where you could get paid for doing absolutely nothing.”
“If only.”
Both let out a small chuckle and continued walking down the corridor.
“Well,” Sango spoke up a couple of minutes later when they reached the service desk, “I guess this is where I leave you. If you need anything,” she continued, “Just press the speed dial three button, and it will go straight to my office phone. Number one is Sesshomaru, and two is Kagura. All the others are labelled so it shouldn’t be too hard.”
Kagome nodded and made her way behind the large counter top. “Let’s hope that nothing to difficult pops up on my first day that I can’t handle.”
“You’ll do fine, besides,” Sango pointed across the foyer towards the reception desk, “Ayame is right over there if there are any minor problems.”
Glancing across at where her friend was pointing, Kagome watched as the receptionist gave her an enthusiastic wave.
“Don’t worry Kagome, you’ll do fine.” She called out.
Kagome returned Ayame’s wave and gave her a small smile, “Let’s hope so.”
“Ayame’s right, Kagome. You will do fine. And as I said, we’ll all be here to help you any way we ca-” Sango suddenly slapped her forehead. “Uh fuck!”
Kagome’s eyes widened, “What? What is it, Sango?”
Frowning, the former boxer rubbed her temples, “I’ve only just remembered now that I was supposed to go up to the restaurant this morning and grab Kagura’s folder for her. She left it behind while she was giving it its daily inspection and asked if I’d get it for her and I completely forgot.”
“What’s wrong with just going up there and getting it now?”
“Two reasons. One,” Sango raised her finger, “I have a huge report I need to write up before Sesshomaru returns this afternoon which I haven’t even started. Two,” she raised a second finger, “Miroku’s shift has started now so he’ll definitely be up there.”
Kagome raised an eyebrow, “Isn’t that the guy you told me is always grabbing your arse and won’t take no for an answer?”
Nodding, Sango frowned. “The one and the same, hence why I don’t want to go up there.”
“Then why don’t I just go up there instead?”
Sango cast a sceptical glance across at her friend. “You don’t even know where the restaurant is.”
“So? How hard can it be to find?” Kagome shrugged, “Besides, at least this way you don’t have to do it.”
“Are you sure you’ll be okay finding the place? This hotel is a pretty big place. And what about dealing with Miroku?”
Waving her hand dismissively, Kagome shook Sango’s comment off. “I’ll be fine. Besides,” She smiled, “I think it’s about time Miroku and I are introduced.”
This statement caused the former-boxer’s eyes to widen. “What? You actually want to meet him?”
“Of course!” Kagome laughed. “Who wouldn’t want to meet the man who actually has the balls to face Sango Kaoru’s iron fists?”
“Kagome…” Sango rebuked exasperatedly, “How many times do I have to tell you not to call my hands, ‘iron fists’?”
“At least once more.”
~*~
Making his way back from visiting Miroku, Inuyasha found himself lost in his own thoughts as he contemplated everything his friend had told him. It seemed that finally, after over a year of waiting, he would now be able to wreak revenge on the one woman who had actually made her way into his heart.
He had never been known to let someone else get the better of him, so he knew he wasn’t about to start now. It made no difference to him that this was the woman who had successfully broken through his barrier–the one woman to steal his heart and make certain that no one could ever re-claim it…It didn’t matter.
Sure, he had to admit, this wasn’t the way he expected to finally see her again. But then when it came to Kagome and him when where things ever simple? All Inuyasha cared about at this moment in time was proving that he could, and would claim Kagome Higurashi–and then he would break her.
Inuyasha refused to be beaten, not again. There was no way he would let Kagome Higurashi get the better of him this time around.
It was just not acceptable.
One thing he would have to be careful of however was Koga. Sure, Inuyasha knew that if this challenge was within normal standards he’d have no problem beating that mangy wolf. However, with this particular situation his past with Kagome could give Koga an advantage, not to mention that Kagome Higurashi was definitely not like most women.
Inuyasha frowned. What was it that started this whole competition thing between himself, Miroku and Koga anyway? When he actually thought about it, he couldn’t even remember what started it all. To him, it seriously felt like it just happened gradually over time since he returned home and started working at his brother’s (or half brother if he was to actually think technically about it) hotel.
He had always been out to prove himself just as good (or even better) then his two friends. Even back in primary school where he first became friends with (the oddly curious about the opposite sex at such a young age) Miroku and (the obnoxiously over confident young wolf-demon) Koga, Inuyasha had been determined to make his place within the trio.
Thinking about it even further, Inuyasha realised that this need between all three of them to compete against each other matured even further once all three boys had hit puberty and then entered high school. If they weren’t competing to get the most girls, it was competing for the best spots on all of the most popular sporting teams. He could even remember occasions where all three of them even battled it out for grades as well…though Inuyasha had to admit that in that particular aspect of school life the competition was usually more between Koga and Miroku. He was never one to be actively book smart.
So, coming back to his original question, what was it then that made he, Miroku and Koga continue there competitive ways, even after high-school? To most who knew them back then, it appeared that the three of them would eventually lose contact with each other, what with them all following different career paths. Miroku wanting to study to become a famous chef, Koga wanting to study to become a doctor, and he himself wanting to study business.
However, to everyone’s surprise, (Including his own, Inuyasha had to admit) the three remained as connected as ever, even when he decided he’d had enough of his brother’s shit for a while and high-tailed it to Australia to study business there instead of in Japan. Miroku, (and to his amazement) Koga, would regularly phone or email him for weekly updates on University life down under. It even went as far as Miroku and Koga visiting him in Australia once in a while when there was the rare occasion that all three of them had time free.
Looking back at it now, Inuyasha couldn’t believe that now, four years later, he was still as close friends with Miroku and Koga as he was back in their primary/high school days. Especially seeing as these few months had definitely been tough. Not only because after shortly coming home from Australia he was left having to ask his brother for a job, (having been unsuccessful obtaining a job himself seeing as there was a decrease in job availability), but also because at the time he was still (though he hated to admit it) affected by her.
Not that Miroku and Koga actually knew about that certain aspect of his Australian schooling…nor would they ever. What he had felt back then for Kagome Higurashi was in the past. Never again to re-surface. Besides, Inuyasha knew he had to focus on the now.
His reputation was a stake after all, not to mention his pride.
Lost in his thoughts, Inuyasha continued his way through the hotel. Making his way around the up-coming corner however, he found himself frozen in his tracks as he heard the sound of her voice somewhere around the corner.
“Sango said the restaurant was on this floor, so where the bloody hell is this place?!”
What the? The half demon took a peek around the corner.
He smirked, not believing his luck. There walking up towards him was Kagome Higurashi.
Perfect.
“Hello, Kagome.”
~*~
Kagome was dreaming…she had to be. This had to be one grossly realistic figment of her imagination. There was no way in hell that he of all people could be here, right now, in the one hotel in all of Japan that she was working at.
There was no way!
“What are you doing here?”
Taking a step forward, Inuyasha glanced down at her, “You sound so surprised to see me”
Kagome’s eyes narrowed, “Well what the hell did you expect? What? Did you follow me all the way to Japan?”
“As it so happens, Kagome, I work here. In fact I’ve been working here for almost six months.” The inu-hanyou smirked deepened, “So if anything, you followed me.”
“Forgive me if I don’t appear to care.” She replied coldly. However, as she made her way to walk around the infuriating inu-hanyou, he blocked her path.
Inuyasha smirked, watching Kagome’s face harden. “Walking away from me already?” He shook his head. “As friendly as ever, I see.”
A small scowl formed its way across Kagome’s face. “I’m seriously not in the mood for your shit, Inuyasha.” She took a step forward, her eyes narrowing, “And be warned, I have no problem kicking your arse should you get in my way here at work.”
“Now is that any way to speak to someone you haven’t seen in over a year?”
Kagome couldn’t help but notice the way Inuyasha emphasised the last word. Glaring up at the inu-hanyou, her eyes narrowed even further. “Look. Just, fuck off before I seriously lose my temper. I have a job to do and it doesn’t involve putting up with you.”
A dangerous fire suddenly flared in Inuyasha’s eyes, like lightning through the sky. Stepping towards Kagome he grabbed her shoulders and yanked her forward so that there faces were almost touching.
Kagome’s breath caught in her throat as Inuyasha stared down at her with his piercing amber eyes. “You lose your temper? You lose your temper?” He exclaimed icily. “You have some nerve, Higurashi.”
Still in his grip her gaze searched his with the same fire. “Let me go, Inuyasha. Now!” she demanded fiercely.
“And what will you do if I don’t?”
Glaring up at Inuyasha, Kagome hated the fact that even after everything he’d done to her, that smug, smirking bastard still had the same affect on her that he did back then. However, along with familiar old feelings, these were then shadowed by more cynical ones.
Anger.
Bitterness.
Resentment.
“Let. Me. Go. NOW!!.” Kagome said once again, more forcefully.
However, she might as well have been talking to a brick wall. Inuyasha was determined to get under Kagome’s skin no matter what the cost.
“Why should I let go?”
Giving the inu-hanyou a sceptical stare, Kagome let out an irritated sigh. “Because I don’t want to be near you” she answered like it was obvious.
The knowing smirk still on his face, Inuyasha tightened his grip. “Yes you do” he replied simply.
Kagome’s eyes widened, “Excuse me?”
“Yes” he bent his head closer, “You. Do”
“Who are you to tell me what I do and don’t want?” Kagome demanded hotly, and, using all the strength she could muster, she pried herself out of Inuyasha’s strong grip.
Putting as large a space between her and the determined hanyou as possible, Kagome’s eyes then bored into Inuyasha’s; neither one of them backing down as they both stood there, challenging each other. An entire conversation happening without a single word.
Then, suddenly, Inuyasha marched over and closed the gap between them once again, pulling Kagome towards him as he wrapped his arm possessively around her waist. “Can you tell me you don’t want this” he whispered huskily, nibbling at her ear lobe teasingly.
Kagome narrowed her eyes and clenched her fists. "What makes you think that I could ever want you?"
Inuyasha smirked and pressed her closer, leaning his face only inches away. "Because If I kiss you, you'll kiss back. If I start anything, you will give in.” He chuckled, “Just like back then.”
Spluttering in disbelief, Kagome’s eyes lit up in fury and her body grew taut, as if she were about to strike out at something. “Don’t hold tickets on yourself Inuyasha” she argued angrily, “You may want something from me, but I want nothing from yo-”
Kagome suddenly found herself being silenced as Inuyasha’s lips crushed down on hers, claiming her mouth. His lips pressed against hers with brutal force, almost bruising them in the process. Punishing her for attempting to deny her attraction for him. His hand snaked through her hair pulling her head back so that he may push harder. His other hand pressing her waist against his groin as he grinded into her, swallowing the small moan that escaped her.
Then, almost as soon as he had started, Inuyasha stopped and pushed Kagome away; wrenching her out of the trance she was in, pulling her back to the cruel reality in his cold smile. They stared at each other in silence, her anger boiling, his simmering down to a cool intensity, both waiting to lash out and use it against the other.
Inuyasha bent down till he was at Kagome’s ear. “You talk a lot, Higurashi–but that’s all you are: talk. You like to act all tough, act like you can hold your own against me. But in the end, you know I can still get to you.”
“Shut up!” Kagome said breathlessly, almost as a moan.
Inuyasha stood straight and looked back into her eyes. “Point proven.”
“You bastard! How dare you touch me like I’m one of your random sluts! Just who the hell do you think you are? If I recall, you were the one who kissed me, so if anything, it’s YOU who wants ME. Not the other way around. Never the other way around.”
Glancing down at Kagome sceptically, Inuyasha shook his head. “And if you believe that Higurashi, then you will believe anything. You know as well as I do that you’re lying.”
The anger Kagome was feeling suddenly melted away, only to be replaced by bitterness, “Why Inuyasha?”
“Why what?”
Kagome shook her head sadly, and found herself gazing solemnly into Inuyasha’s eyes. “Why are you doing this? Why now? Why after everything we’ve been though, are you now trying to break my heart yet again?” In a drained voice, she asked, “Wasn’t once enough?”
Not believing what he was hearing, Inuyasha found himself laughing. “You want to know why I’m doing this? Like I should have to tell you, Kagome...” He said her name like it was a caress down her spine. “And know this; your games won’t fool me this time.”
A heart-breaking smile fluttered across Kagome’s face. Closing her eyes in some type of self-defeat, she shook her head in what could only be scorn – at herself or Inuyasha, it was a toss up.
“Well despite your want for revenge, it won’t work.” Opening her eyes, her anger returned. “I refuse to allow you to play with me any my emotions like they’re dirt. Furthermore, I refuse to allow you treat me as if I’m merely a sex toy for you to play with.” Kagome glared up at the Inu-hanyou. "I’m only going to warn you once more. Stay away from me. If you ever touch me like that again, I shall make you regret it, do you understand?"
Kagome didn’t wait for an answer and she refused to meet Inuyasha’a eyes. Turning around walking away towards the restaurant however, she found herself hesitating at his quiet reply.
“Talk is cheap, Kagome. You know as well as I do that despite all your tough talk, you can’t and won’t resist my advances for too long. I shall have you begging for me.” Inuyasha gave her a seductive smirk, “And we will both enjoy every minute of it.”
And it was there as Inuyasha watched Kagome silently start to walk away again, that they both knew that the battle lines were drawn.
…Things were only just beginning
~*~
Things are getting interesting now. Trust me, I have many great plans for this story.
I know you’re all probably confused about what’s going on between Kagome and Inuyasha. Especially with what happened in the prologue. But trust me, all will be revealed about their past as the story goes on. Let’s just say that the prologue was not the last encounter between Inuyasha and Kagome before they split up.
Next chapter, we get to meet Kagome’s family. And of course, there’ll be some more Inuyasha and Kagome interaction.
However whether Inuyasha survives the interaction or not I’ll let you guys keep on guessing.
Please send us a review or even just a friendly hello.
Cheers,
Jess

Cheers,
Jess
