I think I'm drowning, asphyxiating

I wanna break the spell that you've created

you're something beautiful, a contradiction

I wanna play the game. I want the friction

The numbers on the clock beside the bed told Kagome that she had only ten minutes to get dressed. With a sigh of regret, she got right on it, gazing around. The large and elegant room looked like a royal apartment. Light-blue curtains draped the high windows like dim haze, and through them she could see an enormous garden or whatever that was supposed to be. Turning away from the beautiful sight, Kagome went to the dark oak door and opening it, came face to face with Sango, who was probably going to knock.

- Morning, Sango.

Sango looked at her with big eyes.

- Wow, Kagome. You awake?! My, my, is today some special day or what?

- Today is gonna be a really good day. All my instincts are telling me about it. And I can almost smell it!

- Yeah, right. So let's get going already. We have to get to this meeting room. And the faster we get there, the sooner we'll have breakfast.

- Wonder, what is that for?

- I dunno… Hey, maybe they want to invite us to the Ball!

- What ball?

- You poor deaf girl... Haven't you heard what Miroku said last night? He said, that all rooms were occupied before the ball.

- Ugh, not with our luck… Soo-o-o, do you really think we should go in?

- I'm hungry and I want breakfast.

They were standing before a dark-red wood door, hesitating if it was the one they needed. Sango took a deep breath, pushed the handle down and the door opened.

The large oval-shaped stone room with just filled with demons of all kinds. Some of them where hideous, like outcomes of sickest nightmares, other looked almost like humans. The growling and talking that was filling the rooms stopped, just and the door swung open and hundreds of demonic eyes turned to the girls.

There was tense silence.

Then one of the demons, a small fury man with tiny horns, that looked like a little devil, let out a hissing breath: "Humans!?!".

Growling rose in the room, and Kagome could discern separate phrases:

- Is that for breakfast?

- Hopefully not! These humans are so skinny.

- Then maybe we can fry them for dinner.

- Bake them!

- Fry!

- Bake!

- Fry!

- Bake!

A voice emanating over the chorus of growling demons was filled with amusement.

- Try it and your life will be short, and your death - long and painful.

Kagome licked her dry lips - for a moment there she thought that it was a command to eat them, and only then the sense of the words was clear to her. She could hear like Sango let out a sigh of relief.

The demons where quiet again and then the little devil asked with disbelief: "Does that mean we don't get to eat them, Inuyasha?".

- Right. - Inuyasha's golden eyes flashed and narrowed.

- Or better I'll put it that way to you, Kemuri, - added Miroku, who was standing by his side. - It's either your life or theirs.

- I'd rather get a fishbone in my throat, - muttered Kemuri.

Inuyasha's eyes darted over the other demons.

- Anyone else wants to state his opinion? - he inquired, raising one eyebrow.

Nobody spoke. Inuyasha made an exasperated gesture.

- Then go.

Sango and Kagome moved from the door, watching the demons leave the room. Kemuri shot them a gravely look and then suddenly smiled. The girls stared at him, but the little devil was already out.

- Well, - Kagome broke the silence. - That was very… helpful.

- All this talking about food made me hungry, - noticed Sango wistfully. - What's for breakfast?

- C'mon. I'll take ya to the dining room, - said Miroku, giving her a peculiar look

- So, when's the ball? - asked Sango suddenly, when they were going through the corridor of the north wing.

Miroku looked at her with his mouth open.

- How do you know about it?!

- Gee, you told us yesterday. Don't you remember? So, what I want to know, is when are we going to the ball?

- Is there something wrong with my hearing or did you just say "we"?

- Yea, me and Kagome.

- Oh, no. You're not going anywhere. It's a… special ball. No humans allowed. Demons only.

- But didn't Inuyasha say… - started Kagome.

- The demons that you saw in the meeting room are under his authority, so he can give them orders. But the guests who are invited to the ball are all powerful demons, leaders of clans. So if your life is dear to you, you'll have to spend this night in your rooms.

- Today?!?! - said Sango and Kagome in unison.

- But you can't go! - said Miroku hastily.

- Ple-e-e-e-e-e-e-ese! - asked Sango, widening her eyes and looking angelic.

The monk swallowed. It was really hard not to say "yea, sure, go ahead, why not."

- Impossible… You are humans. The demons won't hesitate to eat you!

- But there must be some way!!! - insisted Kagome, who got the spirit too.

Miroku was thinking it over for some time and then smiled crookedly.

- Wee-e-e-ell, there might be a way…

- Spit it out already!!!

- The main problem is that you are humans and you have a specific smell. Any demon can distinguish it. Bu-u-ut, if you smell like them, then probably there will be no problems at all, because some demons have human forms… And I, as a matter of fact, happen to have a perfume that can give one a smell of a demon.

Kagome and Sango exchanged glances.

- This is the weirdest plan I've ever heard, - said Kagome. - But maybe it's weird enough to work!

- And you will give us this… um… perfume? - asked Sango.

- Maybe, - said Miroku, with great unconcern.

- Maybe?! What is that suppose to mean?!

- I'll give it to you, but only under one condition…

- I don't want to hear it, - said Sango and rolled her eyes.

But Kagome was curious.

- What condition?

- Hm… let us say… a kiss from Sango.

Sango froze, filling her heart skip a beat, not really sure how to react. Kick the insolent monk? But then they won't go to the ball for sure. Turn around and leave? And forget about the ball? Oh… but I wanna go to the ball!

Kagome sighed and said thoughtful: "Well. This is none of my business so you two just solve this problem by yourselves. She hurried to her room.

Sango could feel blood rushing into her face, as Miroku watched her with interest. Under the dark lashed his eyes showed violet.

- I'm not doing it! - she said heatedly.

- Why? - he asked softly.

- Because I don't want to!

- You're just saying that, because you've never kissed before.

- Of course I did! - she protested, but knowing, that he was right.

- Did not.

- Did to!

- Did not.

- Did to!

And then he was kissing her. With an urgency that was nearly painful, with deep passion. And to her Sango's own surprise she opened her mouth, welcoming the kiss, letting his tongue inside. His hands ran through her hair and she felt her knees give out as he deepened the kiss. Sango wasn't trying to pull away anymore, not thinking about anything, until the kiss was over.

She raised her face, looking for a moment into those sparkling violet eyes. Then stepped back.

The door swung open.

- So how was it? - wondered Kagome, who was standing near the window, looking over at the endless garden, and turned around.

Sango shot her a ferocious glare, but said nothing.

- So, I guess this means it was good.

- Was not! - she put her hand over her mouth, but the words were already out.

Kagome smirked.

- Ah, so there was a kiss after all. My sincere congratulations.

- Ugh, get lost!

Sango set on the bed, looking confused.

- C'mon, cheer up, girl! That was your first kiss and you look like your boomerang broke. It wasn't so bad, was it?

- It was… wonderful, - admitted Sango truthfully. - But I don't want to talk about it, OK?

- Yeah, sure… but that means we're going to the ball, right?

- Uh, probably.

- Great! C'mon, let's go tell Rin. Maybe if she feels better, she'll go too!

Sango smiled weakly and allowed Kagome to yank her out of the room.
