Chapter Seventeen
The curse that Inuyasha gave the moment he looked through her doorway was explosive. Quiet—but explosive. She hadn't expected anything out of the ordinary outside of her Condo, anything to give away to the chaos inside and she wasn't disappointed.Miroku knew to keep things quiet and he'd done a fine job. He and Sanga, along with Naraku, were the only others present. Naraku, yes, she remembered him from the Court Room.
This kind of animosity sure as hell didn't need to get out to the public. Demons would be searching high and low if they thought or even knew the Jewel was this easily accessible. But thanks to a few Demon counterparts who were current in her life, a good percent of the Demon World knew SHE possessed the Jewel.
Wonderful.
“You don't need to go in there.” Inuyasha said and it wasn't an option if the tone of his voice spoke anything.
“Yes, I do.” Kagome retorted, irritated. She snatched her arm out of his grip. “I can't purify the Jewel standing outside.”
“You are not going in there.” He said again. “Not until I check this shit out myself.” Inuyasha had never been a possessive man in his life. Scratch that. No, fuck that. He'd always been possessive of things that were his and Kagome, she was His. No way in hell was he letting his Mate walk into a room that held a somewhat powerful Demon who had been able to get this close to the Jewel. That was just begging for trouble, especially when he knew Naraku hoarded Demons somewhere. He always did.
There was just no fucking way he was letting his Mate into an ounce of possible danger.
“You don't dictate to me.” Kagome held herself in check, telling herself to count to ten. He wasn't going to let her into her own place? Seriously?
“I do now.”
Oh no he didn't.
“If you go near the Jewel in the condition it's in now, your Demon side won't be too happy.”
“I'll take the chance.” He wasn't, however, going to let Kagome take that kind of chance.
“Now listen here—“
Inuyasha pushed past her, barely hanging on to his patience. Here they were, not even an hour after having Marked her, and they were coming to violence. He felt a hint of a smiling tugging at his lips. Ye Gods, he was looking forward to the years he was going to spend with her. “You set one foot in there before I've looked things over and I'll throw you over my shoulder and carry you back to where we just left.”
Kagome just stared at Inuyasha's back as he pushed past Miroku's stunned face and confused “What are you doing here? Where's Kagome?”. The only thing that came to her mind at Inuyasha's words were 'Caveman' because that was certainly the way he was acting. How old was he anyway?
She pursed her lips. He so had not just done that. This was HER home. This was her Domain. Naraku was under a subjugation spell and no way in hell was she going to be kept out in the hallway, much less away from the one precious object that was hers to protect.
Not to mention that if she hadn't been too busy rolling around on Inuyasha's bed, she would have noticed the Jewels disturbance.
She stepped over the threshold.
From there, she wasn't sure what happened. It was as if the room exploded from the inside. She heard Inuyasha's roar of outrage, though not completely directed at her. The moment she was inside she felt the Demonic aura surrounding Naraku and the many Demons he kept inside his body. No wonder she hadn't liked him on first sight.
And those hoards of Demons inside his body, he released.
Of course he'd want to kill her. With no one to protect the Jewel, it was open game.
And it was just that, open game. The burst of Demonic energy paralyzed the seal on Naraku's chest. It was a mass of blurred, twisted bodies tearing up through Naraku's chest and man, the Demon was serious from the looks. He wanted her dead.
Faintly, she could hear Miroku and Sango yelling, but Inuyasha drowned them out with his second roar.
Kagome was usually ready for a Demon attack. She was usually prepared. She'd come here prepared to escort Naraku to a Demon Prison where he'd spend the rest of his days. She hadn't come here prepared to kick some Demon ass; other than Inuyasha.
The living room was small, compared to the compacted position of the Demons and the interior designs didn't stand a chance. The coffee table flipped, the inside glass shattering in two and the large flat screen TV slammed across the room and through a hallway door.
Her body vibrated with the vile sensation of Demonic Energy and she winced and then ducked down, covering her head. She was still human and she could easily die a human death. She peered up, watching in shock as Inuyasha bodily tossed Naraku across the room and then sliced through one of the protruding Demons.
Her Condo was being torn apart by hoards of Demons trying to kill her. One of the Demons landed a glancing blow off her shoulder and she purified him on touch. Inuyasha roared again and she panicked, seeing all the carnage.
She hadn't expected this shit to go down.
She covered her face with her hands as plaster rained down.
Bright, hot spiritual energy flood out from her body, encasing the room. Abruptly the sound of carnage stopped, though the smell of sulfur rose up, smoke swirling. She peeked through her fingers, saw Inuyasha, Miroku and Sango standing there stunned at the suddenly lack of Demons in the room, except for Naraku.
There was a reason why they'd chosen HER to protect the Jewel.
Sometimes, she liked being a priestess. But get her panicked or piss her off, you were gonna get your Demon ass burned.
“I FUCKING TOLD YOU TO STAY OUTSIDE!”
She dropped her hands and stood up, her eyes narrowing. Small triangular pieces of plaster and white powdered substance fell from her hair and shoulders. “Excuse me?”
“I told you it wasn't safe. I knew Naraku was going to try some stupid shit and look what happened? If you would have waited—“
“Oh, please.” Kagome threw up her hands and stepped over broken shards of glass and then over a couch cushion. “Like I can't handle myself. This is my Home and I'll be damned if a man tells me—“
“Mate.” Inuyasha corrected her through clenched teeth. He wasn't just a man, he was her Mate. He was almost seeing red at the memory of her stepping through that door. Not because she'd disobeyed him, because Kagome against a hoard of Demons? Not likely. Possible? Maybe. He hadn't been about to take the chance.
She was tired and she was pissed. For all intents and purposes, she'd just saved Inuyasha's ass. Her Condo was a wreck, but she'd saved his sorry ass.
She'd saved his sorry, black haired ass. She gasped, the sound covered by her hand popping over her mouth. She'd purified him again. “I'm sorry.” She blurted out.
Inuyasha glared, one hand still wrapped around Naraku's jugular. “No, you're not.”
“I didn't mean—“
“Yea, you do that a lot, don't you?” How many times had she purified him now? Twice, full purification. Only God knew how many times she'd shocked his ass. He slammed Naraku's head back against the wall and then released the bastard. “Give it a few.” He muttered. His Demon side would be back in a matter of minutes. By God, he hated it when she did that.
“You can do whatever you want, but we're going to have a talk about what you do where Demons are concerned.”
How ironic, wouldn't that include him? They so were not going through this again. “Shut up.”
There were two good things about the situation right now, and one bad. The first thing, the hoard of Demons were gone. Second, the Jewel had been purified in the blast. The bad thing? Inuyasha was across the room.
Miroku cleared his throat, seeing that a whole different kind of violence was about to erupt between the two Divorce Lawyers. Both eyes swung his way and he did the only thing he could think of to keep the two from jumping on him. “The Jewels been purified.” He said to bring matters back to hand.
Kagome swung her eyes to the so spoken of Jewel. It lay there, connected to the beaded necklace, glowing a healthy pink that would shock most mortals. She'd already known that. “I know that.” She snapped out. She took a deep breath and counted to ten and by the time she reached ten, she was coming to the realization of how trashed her Condo was.
“Well, damn.” She whispered, her shoulders sinking.
She was tired, pissed and just a little stressed out. She was pretty sure she'd just snuffed out her spiritual powers for the day and with the condition of her Condo, a good couple thousand dollars was coming out of her bank.
She felt the hum of Inuyasha's Demon making its presence known in Inuyasha's body, turning him back into the half Demon she'd met. Strange, that she actually felt it, when she hadn't before. Oh, right, she thought wryly, the bastard had Marked her. The so called mark on her shoulder throbbed at the reminder.
Out of the corner of her eye she saw Inuyasha's hair flare into silvery white.
“Kagome?”
She turned towards Miroku, frowning at the expression on his face.
“What...” Miroku reached a hand out, as if to touch her head but he stopped. “Your...”
The man was kind of gulping at her. Confused with a look of “what the fuck”.
The world tilted, spun, as Inuyasha's hands settled on her shoulders and then he was spinning her around to face him. The look on his face was fierce. He wasn't staring at her face, though. His eyes were pinned atop her head and then one of his clawed hands lifted.
His fingers feathered over one of the small, black as night fuzzy triangular ears atop her head. Ones that nearly mirrored the silvery ones on top of his head.
Inuyasha smiled.
