So I rewrote the first chapter, and added the second chapter into it. I think the story flows much better this way. If you've never read this story before, enjoy!

BUT I ENCOURAGE THOSE WHO HAVE READ IT TO REREAD THIS CHAPTER!

 They were gaining on her.

Her ankles were weak from the constant strain of holding her up. It seemed like she had been running away for so long…

How many blocks had those creeps been chasing her?

God, all she did was go to the movies with her friends, that's all. It wasn't as if she deserved this. She shouldn't have refused a ride home from Yuka's mom. She should have just taken it, she would have been safe at home right now if she had.

“Come on guys, she's this way!” One thug called not too far behind her…

Kagome panicked as she glanced over her shoulder.

They're right behind me!” she cried to no one but herself. She practically dove around the next corner, screaming on top of her lungs for someone to help her.

No one would. She was alone. .

Streetlights were her only guide; her eyes didn't recognize any familiar streets for the last several blocks.

At this point she was sure her legs were going to break from the hell she was putting them through. Her jeans had ripped at the knee from the fall she had barely recovered from and her light cotton tank top clung to her skin from sweat.

Kagome was exhausted.

“Leave me ALONE!” she screamed as one got close enough to try and wrap his arms around her. She managed to kick herself free, and ran over to grab a glass bottle from the ground.

As one of the men neared her, she trust the bottle against the wall to shatter it, using the jagged end as a weapon. The men didn't even flinch.

The one that appeared to be the leader scowled. “That was a bad move…”

He began to approach her, and she thrust her weapon at his gut.

He dodged instantly, effortlessly.

“Poor, defenseless miko…” he mumbled, stepping away from the shadows that covered his face. There stood a handsome younger man, perhaps only a year older than she was. His hair was long and black, with red eyes that she swore were red. Bangs dangled against his tan forehead, and a braid whipped gently in the wind behind him.

“Hiten?”

It was a boy from her school, a demon boy go figure.

She readied herself for the attack she knew was coming. She would fight them off, as best she could. She wouldn't be the pathetic little girl that crawls up into a l ball and cries on the ground…

“Stay away from me you pigs!” she shouted, grinding her teeth

Kagome was met with nothing but snickers and before she knew it, they were all surrounding her. She wondered momentarily if they would beat her or rape her? Maybe even leave her for dead...

A lump was beginning to form in the back of Kagome's throat.

She took a deep breath and closed her eyes… Well, it was a good fight, she thought as she looked solemnly up at the sky.

But in that moment, her eyes widened. Bright, cold green eyes meet with ocean blue.

“I'll help you…” they whispered, switching from her to the men that were sounding her. Almost instantly, growls and snarls erupted from her savoir. She saw him tense up, and she could have swore his body changed forms.

He looked like…a fox?

“Long time no see, Hiten.”

Blackness enveloped her then, and she welcomed it.

Kagome awoke with a start.

The images flashed before her eyes again, more slowly this time; the images of monsters that once threatened life. She shook her head and attempted to massage her temples to relax the thundering inside her brain. How many times now did she have that same dream?

It was the night of the chase; the night that she would never forget. How could she? Thing's could have gone so wrong for her…she could have been a totally different person, or a dead one.

`If it hadn't been for him…'

The images began to fade and Kagome's back relieved of all the built up tension. Sighing, she allowed herself to fall back into the comfort of her mattress.

“Shippo…”

She whispered his name, the name of the tiny little kitsune that had come to her rescue. He was only ten years old that night, but he had been strong. He was so young, but had seen so much. If he hadn't come across her then, God knows how both their lives would have been different…?

Kagome forced herself to roll lazily onto her belly. “I can't believe it's been two years…” she thought aloud, resting her chin in hand. Once Kagome's mother had found out what happened, she had showered the young boy with kisses and hugs.

When she found out he was hungry, she fed him. When she discovered he was homeless, she welcomed him to her home. When she realized her was motherless, she adopted him.

And that's how life was from that point on. Shippo gained a mother, a grandpa, a brother and a sister. He saved Kagome's sanity as well as life, and in return the Higurashi's gave him one.

Yawning loudly, Kagome stretched her arms high above her head and regretfully climbed out of the sanctuary of her warm bed. She trotted off into the hallway, stopping at the closest to grab some fluffy towels.

Her feet silently padded across the carpet and into the cold tiles of the bathroom, where she immediately closed the door and began to strip of her morning attire.

Once again as Kagome began to busy herself with her normal morning ritual, her mind began to wander back to her adopted brother.

He had such a childish smile, and the funny kind laughter; the kind that you just couldn't help but smile to when you heard. He was sort of small for his age, but she didn't doubt that when his demon blood kicked in he would grow.

He sort of reminded her a little bit of Peter Pan, with his bright red hair, freckled cheeks and nose. Especially those green glowing eyes, ones that she noticed would flick to gold when he was very angry.

Kagome turned the nozzle on the bath tub to the left, making the hot water pool out.

It was strange to think that once her family existed without the presence of the young fox demon. She recalled him saying something similar to her once, after Souta had been in a accident. He and Shippo had decided to climb the old tree in the shrine, and it ended with Souta loosing his balance and falling several feet.

It was something Kagome remembered well, because aside for Shippo's smaller stature, he was still very strong. He was careful to pick up Souta, and carry him inside the house to find Mrs. Higurashi.

She had been the one to call the ambulance, and ride in it with the boys to the hospital. Souta was pretty banged up, but none the less walked away with a broken left leg and nearly broken arm. It was on the ride there that Shippo had said to Kagome…

“You know, I can barely even remember a time without you guys…”

She recalled him whispering, and then he looked at her with big puffy eyes. “And I don't ever wan' a be without you…”

It's odd that children think like that sometimes, when they feel they've done something wrong and might be getting punished. Even though Shippo did no such thing, because he climbing with Souta, and hadn't fell as well, he thought he was to blame.

He always blamed himself.

You see, Shippo has lived a very tragic life. At a young age, his parents had been…stolen from him.

Ever since then, he had lived on his own. He provided for himself, some way some how. Kagome could only imagine how he paid bills, forging signatures and well, stealing for food. He was a coy little guy, and taught himself how to survive.

But he blamed himself for the death of his parents, and ever since then blamed everything on himself when something bad happened. “Poor kid…” she thought aloud.
Shaking her head of the depressing thoughts, Kagome climbed into the hot water of her bath. She heaved a relaxed sigh, allowing herself to slide down the smooth back of the tub. The water tickled beneath her chin.

Aside from her dream, today was going to be a good day.

Today, Kagome Higurashi was an official senior.

“First day of school! (Yeah, Yeah!) First day of SCHOOOOOOL!” she sang enthusiastically, a bit too loudly. She enjoyed the acoustics of the bathroom very much…

“Kagome…!” Thump, thump; a voice called from the room beside her (pounding on the wall or kicking it).

“I'm trying to sleep!!” It was Souta. Thump, thump, thump.

She had totally forgotten that he went to school an hour later than she...and that his and Shippo's room right next to the bathroom.

Her face-flushed red in embarrassment, and she sank shamefully into the warm water.

“Sorry!” she called, turning off the water with her talented toes. (*AN: something I do all the time, I'm so lazy!*)

Another thud came as her response. Kagome decided to hurry up her early morning ritual.

Completely satisfied with her bath, blow drying her hair and picking out her outfit for the day, Kagome practically skipped down the stairs.

When she reached the kitchen, she couldn't help but roll her eyes at the sight of Shippo and Souta peering drearily down into their cereal bowls. It had been nearly forty-five minutes since they were both had been shaken out of sleep by Kagome's eccentric singing.

Frankly, to Mrs. Higurashi (who was already pouring a bowl of cereal for Kagome) they seemed rather zombies like.

“Good morning boys!” Kagome sang, sounding chipper as ever.

“How is it that everyone else in this shrine is a morning person, besides you and me?” A very tired Shippo grumbled as he glanced over at his adopted brother, attempting to ignore Kagome. He dramatically scooped up a spoonful of cereal. Souta shrugged.

“They're on speed.” He responded as if to remind Shippo of a well known fact, all the while playing with some soggy cheerios. Shippo nodded in agreement.

“Well whatever it is, I want some.”

Just then, a rather large calico cat managed to launch himself onto of the table, landing face first in Souta's breakfast. Souta stood up immediately, shoved the cat off the table and stomped into the kitchen to get a rag and towel.

“Stupid-I'm going to kill that little…ARGH!”

Kagome rubbed her temples. “What a great way to start the day…-Buyo, get DOWN!”

After picking up the obese monster cat and carrying it outside, Kagome returned to the kitchen to help her little brother clean up the mess. She finished eating, snatched up her keys and took one last glance into the mirror.

Her faded jeans fit her nicely, and the white sleeveless Tee looked good with the green ribbon that weaved in and out alone the hemline of the shirt. She had straightened her hair today as a little added bit to her first day attire, so it looked longer without the wavy curls.

She paused for a moment at the mirror to add a faint bit of pink to her lips. Once she was completely satisfied, she gave a little pucker at herself and then turned to her mother.

“So momma,” Kagome started sweetly, like she always did with her mother.

“Since today is the FIRST-“she definitely emphasized the last word, “-day of school, I was wondering if Sango and I can just go back to her house afterwards. Is that alright?”

The genuine Kagome smile never left her face.

Mrs. Higurashi smiled back at her and nodded, turning on the faucet over the sink and began cleaning up the dishes. Kagome beamed, kissed her mother on the cheek and zoomed out the door.

“Hurry Shippo!” she called, fumbling to get her car keys out of her yellow bag. As soon as the words left her lips, the young kitsune immerged from the house, slinging his book bag over his shoulder.

Kagome ducked her as she climbed into the jeep, putting the keys in the ignition.

“Are we picking up Rin today?” Shippo asked as he reached the vehicle, pulling on the passenger-side door. When the door didn't open, he rolled his eyes and tapped his fingers on the window. “Uh, Kagome…?”

“Oh hush, I'm getting to it.” She responded quickly, grunting as she had to lean across the seat next to her to unlock his door.

“For some one who was zombie this morning, you're sure pushy.” Shippo only rolled his eyes at her again and began to climb into the car.

“Okay little Miss Ray of Sunshine, lets skip down the yellow brick road to Happy Town!” he teased, adding a cartoon'ish tone to his voice.

“Shippo…” Kagome hissed playfully, glaring at him from the corner of her eye,

“Yeah?”

“Don't make me hurt you!”

“Yeah like you even cou...” -Kagome quickly shifted the car into reverse and began to back out of the driveway, the red-haired boy still hanging half way out of the vehicle.

“- KAGOME!” Shippo shouted, hopping on one foot to keep his balance.

“Done yet?” Kagome asked coyly, grinning at him. Shippo nodded dramatically at her and she stopped the car and allowed him to climb inside…which he did rather quickly this time.

The raven laughed and pulled her car around, this time with Shippo safely inside. Before she turned on to the road, she glanced at the boy beside her and stated, “I liked it better when you were a little kid. You weren't such a smart ass.”

He shrugged. “I learned from the best!” The two teens exchanged a smug grin and ventured off into the distance, otherwise known as school.

The car ride was genuinely quiet, as it normally was with Shippo, unless he had something to whine or be eccentric about. The school wasn't far, so the ride barely lasted 10 minutes.

As soon as Kagome put the car in park in front of Shippo's Jr. High, he practically shot out of the car. “Be careful!” Kagome called after him, but he only waved her off.

Kagome sighed as this, but put the car back into drive and drove a half a mile down to her school. She fished around the parking spot for a while, satisfied with one towards the back. She noticed though, a car she had never seen in the lot before…a real flashy one.

Actually, as she pulled up closer, it looked more like one from those dumb magazines her brother loved to read. Kagome felt a little out of place parking next to it, since her little vehicle was a dull red Jeep, a couple years old and definitely a hand-me-down from her mother.

“Must be some rich freshmen's or something…” she thought with a shrug, still a bit curious.

Kagome parked her Jeep and pulled her bag from the back seat. She threw he keys and cell phone in the yellow bag as well before she carefully opened her door; could you imagine if she scratched that car next to her?

She blinked idly as she passed the vehicle, almost in awe at how the fire-engine red paint seemed to glow vibrantly in the morning sun. “Show off.” She muttered, even though a small part of her was jealous.

`If I had all that money, I would give it to momma to fix up the shrine…'

Kagome pushed open the heavy doors to the school.

Everything looked clean, it smelled clean too. The floors had been newly waxed, as well as carpeted. “The school must have passed that levy…” she mumbled, admiring the new, fresh look.

Her shoes made loud squeaking sounds as she treaded down the hallway, emphasizing her mental point about how clean everything appeared to be.

Her eyes searched the mass of students for her own friends, stopping every now and again on girl's with pony tails or boys in black. Finally after hearing some loud feminine shouting and a low male voice pleading for forgiveness, Kagome headed in the direction of the shouts.

Miroku was wearing his normal black T-shirt with the purple Buddha printed on it and his purple wrist bands. His hair was pulled back into a small pony tail that touched the nape of his next, though Kagome noticed his hair was slightly tousled today.

`Oh wait,' she thought. `He bought a new pairs of jeans.'

The ones he wore now showed no signs of abuse or tatters, unlike his typical pair that he chose to sport most of the summer.

“…YOU stupid little pervert!” shouted a slim girl with long raven hair, held up in a high pony tail. She whipped her book bag around to slam the boy in to face, knocking him back into a wall. “WHEN WILL YOU LEARN?!”

Kagome giggled. “Hi Sango!” she greeted cheerfully, catching her friends attention.
Sango's hand paused in mid-action from back handing Miroku.

“Oh, Hey Kagome!”

The raven haired girl forgot all about the crippled monk laying against the wall to walk over to her friend. “What's up?” she asked, picking her bag up from the floor.
“Nothing,” Kagome shrugged. “I was just looking for you two.” She said, tilting her head towards Miroku, who was slowly picking himself up off the floor.

“Kagome!” He started, making his way over to the two girls. “I have missed you!”

Sango narrowed her eyes and rubbed her temples in annoyance.

“Don't try anything Monk.” She stated immediately. Miroku looked appalled, as if she had said something that deeply offended him.

“I would nev…-”

“-So who's the new `money'” Kagome asked, interrupting her friend. Sango glanced momentarily over at Miroku, who stood behind her now shaking his head and attempting to brush off the dust from his shirt and fix his hair.

“Not sure, haven't heard anything about it.” She said, turning back around. “Why do you ask?”

Kagome and Sango waited for Miroku to catch up with them before they started walking into the main lunch room, Kagome explaining the fancy red car she saw this morning. Sango nodded with slight interest while the Monk was busy trying to flirt with all the new freshmen.

“Cradle Robber…” Sango muttered.

After about 15 minutes, the morning bell rang and the three were forced to split, each going to the homeroom their names were listed on.

“Meet us at the bathrooms to see what classes we have together!” Kagome called to them, waving along the way. Sango and Miroku nodded, eventually exchanging quick goodbyes themselves before separating.

“I love first days…” Kagome said aloud to herself, smiling as she watched her friends walk away.

Behind her, she could hear two girls giggling as they walked past. “Oh my God, did you see the new senior?” the one asked with a young, bubbly voice. Kagome slowed her walk slightly, listening in on the conversation

“Yes! What a hottie, I mean even for a demon!” the other added, laughing. “-and you know what else I heard? I heard he's LOADED!”

`That must be who the car belongs to.' She thought, satisfied with what she heard.

“Stupid rich kids…” she muttered.
