Chapter 2: Note Passing

~* I *~

English. Reading, writing, etc. One of my favorite subjects. Of course, I was listening and hanging on every word the teacher said. Here's what she's saying:

“Blah, blah, blah, in my class, blah, blah, lunch detention, blahddy, blahddy, blah!”

If I didn't listen the first three years of high school, what makes her think I'll listen now?
Mrs.Yoka wasn't the most friendly teacher. In fact, she's sarcastic, rude, and loves to pick on me.

Wow. She's like Sesshomaru, and I do not need another one of those. So I usually ignore her. Hey, it works for me. I just drift off, into space, not caring what she says. But, today, I wasn't drifting off. In fact, I found myself staring at Kikyo. She was one seat over from me. I can't believe this is Kagome's new sister. I could see only some similarities between them. Like, their black hair. Kikyo was slightly different. Her skin was a little bit paler and her hair was longer and more evenly cut. She was almost stunning. Hmm. I wonder if it's just me?

Suddenly, a lightweight object hit the top of my head. I broke from my daze and looked in the direction of where the object was thrown. Mrs.Yoka was standing with her arms crossed and a glare in my direction.

“Welcome back to Earth, Mr.Tashio. Tell me, how was LaLa Land?” she asked.

“Fine. How is Earth?” I countered. Some of the class laughed.

“Let me tell you, Inuyasha, when I saw your name on my class list, I almost leaped for joy.”

I leaned back in my chair and folded my hands, “I'm happy to hear that.”

“You working on a new record? First day of school and you're already getting yourself into trouble?”

“Ah, you know me.”

“Yes, and it worries me deeply. May I get back to my lesson?”

I waved my hand, “Carry on.”

She turned to the chalkboard and continued writing. I quietly pulled a piece of paper from my backpack and a pencil. I wrote down a one simple question:

Do you think Kikyo's hot?

I folded the piece of paper into fourths, and hid it under my desk. I looked over to Miroku sitting next to me, and whispered his name. No answer. I whispered it again. Nothing. I snapped my fingers and he didn't even move! I took my pencil and flung it at his head.

“What the—?” he whispered. He looked over at me and glared. I showed him the note and he took it. He carefully unfolded it and raised an eyebrow. He mouthed the word “Who?” over to me. I nodded over to where she was sitting. He looked and a grin spread across his face. He wrote down his answer and handed it over.

I didn't take it, “Pass it to Kouga.” I whispered, “Oh and do you have a pencil?”

He rolled his eyes. I didn't know why. He was the one not listening. He handed one of the pencils on his desk. Kouga asked the same question and Miroku pointed over to Kikyo. He wrote his answer and handed it back to Miroku. He was just about to hand it to me when a hand slammed down on my desk. I looked up and put on my best smile.

“Passing notes?” Mrs.Yoka asked.

“No. We're…comparing notes?”

“Do you really think I'd fall for that?”

“That depends…is it working?”

She leaned down to get right in my face, “Not really.” She snatched the note from Miroku, “Now, what is this?” She unfolded the first flap.

“NO!” I shouted. I quickly snatched the note from her hands. Mrs.Yoka looked at me with confused expression…and so did the class. “I-I want to…read it.” Oh crap. What did I just get myself into?

“Alright. Go ahead.” I slowly rose up. I spied Miroku and Kouga snicker to one another. I looked over to Kikyo who smiled. I can't let her hear this. I have to think on my feet and fast! I very slowly walked to the front of the class to stall for time. When I got to the chalkboard, I turned with a smirk. I got something.

I cleared my throat and unfolded the note, “Do you think Mrs.Yoka is hot? Miroku: yes, Kouga: yes, Inuyasha: no.” The entire class burst into laughter. Miroku and Kouga's mouths dropped open. Mrs.Yoka glared at me and then at Miroku and Kouga. I looked over at Kikyo who was also laughing.

I'm so good.

I chuckled and headed back to my seat. Mrs.Yoka stopped me and held out her hand. I gave her the note and she ripped it in half. She walked to her desk and pulled a square piece of paper from her desk. She shook her head, “Inuyasha, this is not a good way to start off the year.” She handed me the piece of paper, “I'll see you at lunch.”

“It's a date.” I winked at her. More laughter from the class. She rolled her eyes. Then, the bell rung. Everyone got up from their seats and exited the classroom. I quickly caught up to Kikyo.

“Hey,” I said. I started walking backwards.

“Hi,” she said.

“So, um…I'm sorry about this morning.”

She paused, “Oh! Yeah, it's okay. Although, I don't remember taking Janitor 101.”

I laughed. Suddenly, my shoe hit a trashcan and I tripped over myself.

Smooth.

She giggled, “How about you try walking this way?” She turned me forward.

“Yeah, I guess that works too.”

She stopped, “It's Inuyasha right?”

“Yeah. Why?”

“I just wanted to know the name of the class clown.”

“Ah. I see. I've been called that before. So how do you like Shikon High?”

“It's only been first period.”

“Oh yeah right.” Wow, I'm an idiot.

There was another pause. That's when I realized we were standing there, “Um shouldn't we get to class?” Never thought I'd say that.

“Well, I'm waiting for—” she cut off because Kagome walked up beside her. When she saw me her eyebrow raised.

“Hey Kikyo. Inuyasha, what are you doing here?”

“We were just talking.” Kikyo answered.

“Oh really?”

“Yes. Just talking between classmates.” I said. She had a questionable look on her face. Like, I was lying or something.

“Can I talk to you?” she asked.

“Sure. As long as there are witnesses.”

Kagome rolled her eyes and pulled me away from Kikyo, “What are you doing?”

“What do you mean?”

“Why are you talking to her?”

“Am I…not allowed to talk to her?”

“No!”

“Why not?”

She rolled her eyes again. Is there something I'm not getting here? “Because Inuyasha, I think you're trying to…” she trailed off.

“Trying to…?”

She took a breath, “Are you trying to flirt with her?”

I didn't answer.

She gaped, “You are!”

“I never said that,” I quickly pointed out.

“You didn't not say it!”

“Because if I said yes you would be mad at me—”

“You're damn right I would be mad!”

“But if I said no you would pound me with questions about why I was talking to her!”

She fell silent. She crossed her arms and glared at the floor, “Were you?” she asked not meeting my eyes.

“Why do you care so much?”

She glared at me with fire in her eyes. “Because she's my step…step…”

“Sister.”

“That!”

I sighed, “Maybe…maybe I was trying to talk to her.”

Flirting.”

Talking.”

FLIRTING!”

TALKING!”

“Um, Kagome?” A voice came from behind her. She turned, “Yes, Kikyo?”

“We need to get to class.”

“Okay, where you heading?”

“Um, science.”

“Oh me too.”

“Cool. I guess we'll see you later Inuyasha?”

“Yeah, we'll see you at lunch.”

“Well, actually—” I rubbed the back of my neck, “I kind of have…detention.”

“Oh god. What was it this time?”

“Passing notes.”

She shrugged, “Well, it's not the worst thing you've done. Like when you almost set the chemistry lab on fire!”

“I swear, I thought he said `turn the heat up'! Not off!”

Kikyo stepped forward, “Speaking of the note, what did it really say?”

Question: What should my answer be? Answer: Trick question. I shouldn't answer at all.

“Look at the time! I have to get to…that…thing…I have now.” I got my but out of there.

Another problem avoided by Inuyasha Tashio.
