16 - …Someone Gets Hurt
Shi left the library Monday evening and, glancing up at the threatening rain clouds, decided to walk home instead of risking flight. She hadn't seen Mujinku since he walked her home Saturday night, but her head still swam whenever she thought of his goodbye kiss. She walked slowly, ignoring the wind that whipped her hair and the setting sun that struggled to shine its last rays through the thickening clouds.
She was almost into the woods, when a rough voice called out, “Hey girlie.” Shitenshi barely noticed, used to the old drunken bums in this part of town. Her oversensitive ear caught the noise just in time for her to duck away from the punch that sailed over her head. Shi turned around, backpack slipping off her shoulder. Five teen boys were standing in a semi-circle behind her.
“C'mere girlie” a different voice said. A movement behind her indicated that two more men had completed the circle.
“Leave me alone.” She said, ducking to grab the strap of her backpack. One of the figures on the right rushed forward and reached for her arm. Shi punched him as hard as she could. The man staggered backwards with a moan, hands over his eye.
“You'll pay for that!” One of the others yelled. A rustle was her only notice as one of the ones behind her ran forward. Shi whirled and swung out again, managing to hit the man in the arm. She ducked his swing and aimed her next punch at his abs. She connected solidly and took a step back, right into the hands of another attacker. He grabbed her arms hard enough to bruise, and pulled backward, almost jerking Shitenshi off her feet.
“Get off of me!” She cried, squirming and trying to wriggle out of his strong grip. A new teen stepped forward and punched her in the stomach. Shi resisted the urge to puke and instead kicked up hard. Eyes bugging out, the man fell over, curling into the fetal position. Her arms were jerked backwards and Shitenshi was afraid her shoulders would be pulled from their sockets.
“That wasn't very p'lite, girlie.” The man holding her drawled. Shi recognized his voice as the one who had first spoken.
“I said to let me go!”
“But we're just havin' sooo much fun, I think we'll just hold on t'ya a lil longer.” Another boy rushed forward, but Shi kicked out wildly and he backed off. “Get `er t'gether!” The man roared. Another man joined the first and they came forward from two sides, avoiding her flailing legs. The first on got close enough to land a punch on her cheek, almost knocking her jaw loose. Shi shook her head to clear it and the other darted in on her left, grabbing one foot. Desperately, Shi kicked out violently with the other foot, but it was quickly grabbed by the man on her right. She twisted and writhed, but her three attackers held firm.
“Bring her forward.” A smooth silky voice spoke. A grinning man stepped out of the shadows. The other teen, the only one who didn't attack, moved to stand to the right of the leader. Shitenshi could see their lizard forms through their concealment charms; they were both youkai. A shiver ran down her spine. Humans were bad enough, but youkai could be vicious and cruel, especially to hanyou like her.
“Zar said, bring her forward!” The younger youkai commanded. The three men holding Shi shuffled a few feet forward.
The older lizard took one step forward and sniffed delicately. “A hanyou? Disgusting half-breed filth! What are you doing in my territory, vermin?”
“I live near here.” She ground out. “Besides, the tai-youkai, Lord Sesshoumaru rules this land, not you.”
He stepped forward and backhanded Shitenshi, snapping her head to the side. “How dare you, you impudent brat!”
Shi spit blood onto his shoe and lifted her head, meeting his lime-green eyes. “Lord Sesshoumaru will kill you for attacking a female in his domain.”
The demon smiled mockingly, “He's never bothered to stop me before. I've been doing this for ten years and that mutt has yet to lift a finger against me.”
Ten years? Ten years, why does that sound important? “You think you're so strong? You have to have an entire gang catch a little girl for you?” She spat out, trying to ignore the chill in her blood. The lizard gave her an odd look.
“You seem familiar, somehow. Do you have an older sister, perhaps, who I may have met?” A shiver ran down her spine, but she was given no chance to answer.
“Zard, look at this!” The man Shitenshi had clocked ran forward with her bag, sketchbook held up. “Look, she's got a picture of the tai-youkai and one of his brother's whelps!”
The younger lizard took the book and sent the man sprawling with a swift punch to his already bruised face. “You dare approach Zard himself?” He flipped open the sketch pad and glared at the portrait of Sesshoumaru. He flipped forward a few pages until he found the picture she had sketched on Saturday, the one of Mujinku playing frisbee. “You are familiar with the half-breed's spawn?”
Zard took the pad from his hands, glancing at the picture. “Oh, this is far too good of an opportunity to pass up. The mutt will never know what's coming!” He chuckled cruelly and ripped the page out of her sketchbook. At his nod, one of the men restraining Shitenshi hit the back of her head and she fell into a pool of black, the evil laughter still ringing in her ears.
