Chapter 19 - Torment

Shitenshi woke again with a jerk. For a minute it had felt like someone was whispering in her ear, comforting her. The sensation filled her with a warmth she had not felt since Saturday. Shi looked around her prison again. There was a dull grey light infusing the room and she guessed that it was mid-morning. The small window was close to the ceiling and covered by a tattered green curtain. A light bulb hung in the center of the room and there was a stool in the corner.

Heavy boots approached the door and Shi quickly closed her eyes, again resuming the pose of unconsciousness. The door was opened, but the booted figure never entered. The soft confidant strides convinced Shitenshi that one of the lizard brothers had come in, and she bet it was the younger.

The unseen figure slid the stool over to her and sat as the door was closed. “Come now, my dear, there is no need for faking.” The younger youkai told her. Shi stubbornly refused to open her eyes and she heard him shift on his seat. “Girl, stop that faking at once. Open your eyes!” Shi didn't move and the command was accompanied by a slap.

Without opening her eyes she drawled, “Didn't your mother ever tell you not to hit women? Most people get upset when wimpy men try to bully girls and slap them around.” She was answered by another slap.

“Shut it!”

“But I thought you just told me to open them?” She asked innocently, knowing he was really referring to her mouth and not her eyes. She smirked at the frustration radiating off the youkai.

“If Aniki had not commanded me to leave you alive, you would pay for your sass.” He ground out.

He wants me alive? Then I can have some fun with this baka. She finally opened one eye, lazily surveying her captor. “If you don't mind, I'm trying to sleep here, so could you just please be a good little lizard and leave me alone?” She closed her eye again. “And please don't slam the door on the way out.”

“Why you!” He kicked her ribs viciously and Shi bit her lip to keep from gasping. “I may not be allowed to kill you, but Aniki said nothing of pain.” He kicked her again and Shitenshi felt a rib crack.

“Oh sure, you and your Aniki are so brave,” She spat out, tormenting the teen further. “He doesn't even dare to come in here and you have to have me tied up so that you can kick me. I'm sure your parents are just so proud of you two.” He grabbed her by the hair, yanking her head back, and was reaching for her throat when the door was thrown open.

“Brother, hold your temper.” Zard commanded from the doorway. “She is nothing but an ill-mannered brat; do not let her upset you so.” The younger lizard released Shi and rose, bowing to his older sibling.

“I am sorry, ni-san.” They whispered for a moment, but Shitenshi's ears picked up every word.

“Was the message sent?”

“Yes.”

“Will he come?”

“We think so. The pride of the inu-youkai is strong, especially in the mutt and his offspring.”

“Good. You may go.” The younger bowed and left and the older youkai sat on the abandoned stool. “It may please you to know that your boyfriend is coming after you, as ordered.”

“Well, that's a relief.” Shitenshi sneered, “I'd hate to think that you went to all this trouble and not get anything in return.”

Zard's mouth smiled, but it didn't reach the cold green eyes that bored into Shitenshi's. “How charming. But I am afraid that he will be in for quite a surprise when he gets to the rendezvous point and finds, not you, but a trap.”

Shitenshi felt ice flowing through her veins and she shivered at his cool tone. “He'd never walk into a trap. He is too smart for that!”

“We'll see, my dear, we'll see.” He rose and strode from the room, leaving Shitenshi alone with her own imagination.
