Chapter 41 - Naptime
“I should really tell your mom that it was our idea to go on.” Shitenshi whispered.
“Wait for it.” Mujinku held a hand on her arm and listened to the argument in the kitchen.
“I don't care if you've been awake for two days! You used to go much longer than that without sleep in the feudal era. You two are adults, you have stamina; they don't.” Kagome berated.
“But they slept! They were waking up when we caught up to them.” Inuyasha protested.
“They deserved a nap! They've been through a terrible ordeal. They probably only woke because they sensed you coming.”
“Do you know what they were doing before we found them?!?!” Inuyasha exploded.
“And there's your cue.” Mujinku whispered, lightly shoving the girl forward with a wink.
Shitenshi winked back before poking her head into the kitchen, stifling another yawn. “Excuse me, Ma'am.” She approached Kagome shyly “It was all my fault, honest. Jinku and I wanted to get home and we started running. Actually, Jinku is probably more tired than me; I dozed off for a bit while he was caring me.”
“That's all right, I understand.” Kagome soothed, forgetting her ire as she escorted the girl into the other room. “Now you just go rest until your grandmother gets here.”

“Are they here?” Shiori asked worriedly.
“They're here, safe and sleeping.” Kagome reassured, pulling her into the house. The other woman sighed in relief and she continued. “I'm sorry the boys brought them here first, but I called you as soon as they got here.”
“I understand Kagome. Thank you for all that you've done.” Shiori reassured her as they walked up an open staircase and down a wide hallway. With a finger to her lips, Kagome opened the door at the end of the hall. Shiori grinned with relief at the sight that greeted them.
Mujinku lay on his back, fully clothed except for his shoulder straps, which were tossed on the floor beside the bed. By his far side lay his staff, ready for use. Next to him, Shitenshi curled on her side; her head nestled on the boy's shoulder and both hands resting on his chest. Mujinku's free arm held one of her hands and the other curled beneath and around the girl protectively.
Kagome picked up a spare blanket and draped it over the two teens. Even in his sleep, Mujinku's ears twitched and followed her movements. Shiori walked forward to brush back her granddaughter's bangs, to reassure herself that the girl was really alright. Shitenshi's sighed in her sleep and her ears moved imperceptibly. Suddenly her lavender eyes flicked open.
“Grandma?” She asked softly. Shiori grabbed her in an embrace that the younger girl returned gratefully. “Oh grandma, I'm so sorry. I was just walking home from the library and…”
“Sshhh, it's ok, honey, I know you didn't want it to happen. It's not your fault.” Shiori knelt by the bed, holding the girl. Shitenshi scooted fully upright and tried to get out of the bed, only to find her hand trapped in Mujinku's. Shi tugged, but his grip only tightened reflexively. Thinking for a minute, Shi leaned over and kissed him gently. Mujinku leaned into the kiss, relaxing his hold on her captive hand. Instantly, Shitenshi pulled away, slipping off the bed.
“Hey!” Mujinku snapped into wakefulness. His staff was instantly in his hands. Seeing his familiar room and the two women, he immediately relaxed, laying down the weapon. “I'm sorry, I just thought…”
“You just thought someone was trying to take Shitenshi away from you and you wouldn't let them.” Shiori smiled. “That is an admirable sentiment. I hope you will always feel that way about your mate.”
“Always, Ma'am.” He replied, standing. “I'll always protect Shitenshi.”
Looking into his eyes, Shiori knew that the boy would stick to his word or die trying. “I know.” She hugged her granddaughter again. “Now come along, I want to hear everything.”
“Mom, the toast is on fire!” Shippo's voice ghosted up the stairs.
“My breakfast!” Kagome cried and raced from the room. Laughing, the other three followed suit.
