Chapter 40 - Kagome's Reaction
“I'm so happy for you two!” Kagome squealed, hugging each teen in turn. “Oh, Shiori must be so excited!”
“Um, we haven't told her yet.” Shitenshi confessed.
“What? Why not? I'm sure she'll be thrilled!”
“We just got here, mom.” Mujinku protested. “We've sort of been in captivity the past few days.”
Kagome grabbed his face and gave him another going over. “Are you sure you're ok? You two aren't hiding anything from me, are you?” Her look said that she would not allow any grandstanding.
“We're fine mom, hanyou heal fast, remember?” Mujinku shrugged out of his mother's hands. “You've seen dad heal all the time, and we weren't even hurt as bad as you say he used to get.”
“Too true.” Kagome turned to glare at her mate. “And just where were you this entire time?” Inuyasha wilted under her gaze. “I send you and Sesshoumaru out after them, because I thought you two, being adults, would have more sense than them and get them both out of there. But instead you spend days doing who knows what while they're being captured and beaten and…”
“And starved” Mujinku interjected, hiding his smirk.
Kagome didn't miss a beat. “… and starved and hurt. And they had to fight all those men and youkai all on their own. And then they escaped from that wretched island and then, finally you two showed up!”
“I must protest the inclusion of me in your wrath.” Sesshoumaru lounged against the kitchen counter. “I was forced to slow my pace to accommodate my baka brother.”
“Hey, I didn't ask to turn human for the night!” Inuyasha shot back, glaring at his sibling.
“Oh yeah, Jinku, it was your human night, wasn't it?” Shippo spoke up from his seat at the table. “How did that go? Did they discover you?”
“Sort of. One human saw me with black hair and told the youkai brothers, but Shi held them off until after dawn and they didn't believe him.” Mujinku rubbed his ankle with a grimace.
“Baby.” Shitenshi muttered, before shooting the other boy a coy look. “But Shippo, sweetheart, why didn't you save me?” Her pout only lasted a minute before Mujinku made eye contact and they both began to laugh.
“Huh?” Shippo looked from one to the other. “What do you mean?” Between chuckles they explained the ruse to hide Mujinku from discovery. While the five teens talked, Kagome puttered around the kitchen making breakfast, occasionally shooting her mate a dark glance. Sesshoumaru was about to slip out onto the porch when the doorbell rang.
“Could you get that please, Sesshoumaru?” Kagome asked. “I'm sure it's for you; Kagura must be worried sick.” Sesshoumaru, stoic mask firmly in place, walked down the hall. The group in the kitchen could hear every word as he opened the door.
“Sesshoumaru!”
“Kagura, darling! Don't worry, we got them home safe. I was going to come right over, but Kagome held me up.”
“And you expect me to believe that? Koori, dear, go visit your cousins.”
Koori hurried into the kitchen and winked at Mujinku as he slid into a chair. “Welcome back, mate.”
Mujinku's reply was cut off by Kagura's voice. “Really? I'm sure you've found a way to avoid Kagome's wrath and have just been sitting there smirking while your brother takes all the blame, haven't you?!”
“I would never foster my blame onto someone else!” Sesshoumaru replied indignantly.
“Feh. He does that all the time.” Inuyasha muttered, only to fall silent at a glare from his mate.
“You cannot say that rightfully attributing my brother's failures to him is letting him `take all the blame.' I admitted that it was my idea to follow the second youkai instead of leaving the island immediately. Even ask Kagome.”
“Oh, he did admit that!” Kagome called out, “But ask him what happened while they searched for that youkai!”
The voices lowered for a long moment before Kagura exploded. “YOU LET THEM DO WHAT?!?! How could you let the boy… he's only 18, that's not nearly old enough to make that sort of life altering decision!”
“I resent that!” Mujinku snorted as Sesshoumaru whispered a response.
“Don't give me that line about genetics! I don't care if Kagome and Inuyasha were 17! You cannot expect a child raised in this day and age… if it were our Koori in this situation would you be saying the same thing?”
“Hey!” Koori protested, “How'd the subject switch to me? You're the two who just did something stupid.” Mujinku leaned over to whisper in the other boy's ear. “You didn't!” He glanced to Shitenshi for confirmation and she nodded. “Wow! Congratulations man.”
Kagura stormed into the kitchen, a chastised Sesshoumaru following. “Kagome, how are you handling it? Have you called Shiori yet?”
“She's on her way over.”
“Good.”
Seeing Shitenshi yawn, Mujinku turned to his mother and asked plaintively. “Mom, while we wait, can Shi and I take a quick nap? We were running all night and Shi looks a bit tired.”
“Oh, of course dear.” Kagome ushered them towards the living room and turned to her mate. “You made them run all night after that ordeal?” She glared at both men.
“Now wait a minute, Kagome…” Inuyasha began.
