Chapter 39 - Rescue Efforts
((Or lack thereof))

Inuyasha finally controlled his anger enough to speak. “Your mother is going to kill you, and rightly so. Do you have any idea what you just did?”

“Uh, yeah, I've got a pretty good idea, actually.” Mujinku sauntered back to Shitenshi and slung his arm around her waist. “I mean, I was here when it was happening after all.” Shitenshi had the grace to blush. “As for mom, what do you think will upset her more, the fact that I listened to my youkai blood and chose my mate, or the fact that you two didn't find us before it happened?”

Inuyasha gaped at the boy in disbelief. Sesshoumaru leaned forward and pushed his brother's jaw back up into place. “Of course he would make this as difficult as possible; that must be your influence, Inuyasha. He has a valid point, though. Kagome will certainly want to kill you for failing to rescue the boy earlier. I'm sure that her anger over his choosing a mate will pale in comparison with her anger towards you.”

Mujinku smirked and pulled Shitenshi closer to him. “Told ya.” He pulled a pouty face. “Poor little Shi and I had to face seven men and two full youkai all by ourselves, and then find a way off that bloody island, cause there was no one to help us. I mean,” he sniffled, “just think of what could have happened to us without proper adult supervision. It was my human night after all!” Shitenshi buried her face in Mujinku's shoulder, overcome by giggles. “And there we were, not even knowing if you had planned a rescue or if we were just all by our lonesome. And there were all these traps and had to talk to this idiot of a guard…” he broke off, pretending to swoon.

“Yeah,” Shi added as the boy snickered “We confused that fellow so bad. I kinda feel sorry for him. And we even got beat up and starved and everything!”

You got beat up?” Mujinku asked in mock incredulity, pulling her away from him. “Who kicked who? You were so mean to `poor little brother Jinku.'”

Shi continued to chuckle. “Oh yeah, who got food and who didn't? Besides, what can I say, I like older men.” At that both teens could no longer hold back their laughter and Mujinku fell to the ground, pulling Shi into his lap. Both adults just stared in confusion at the mirthful teens.

“You know… what this… means?” Mujinku gasped out.

“What?” Inuyasha growled, tapping his foot in agitation.

“Mom `n' aunt Kagura… they get to… plan a… wedding.”

“Keh.” Inuyasha crossed his arms over his chest when Sesshoumaru also began to chuckle. “It's not that funny.”

“No? The boy has pegged you perfectly. Both of them will be so happy to have this massive celebration to plan that they will forget their anger for the children quickly. And I was hampered by your human form, which will be my very plausible excuse for Kagura. You, Inuyasha, are the only one with no defense.” Sesshoumaru picked up Mujinku's staff and crossed to the panting teens. “You really fought all nine at once?” he asked in disbelief, handing over the weapon.

Mujinku disabled the staff and rose, looking for the holster. “Nah. We knocked out two of the humans early, then I took on the other five while Shi took care of the reptile.” Mujinku found the straps and quickly slipped them on.

“We left the younger one for you.” Shitenshi added helpfully. “We didn't want to make you go all that way for nothing.”

Sesshoumaru snorted. “How could you be so sure we would follow? We might have decided to let you fix your own mess, foolish pup.”

“Nah. Even if mom and aunt Kagura let you off the hook, you would've gotten my message from Koori.”

“So?” Sesshoumaru growled.

“I knew you couldn't resist coming if a `child' told you not to.” Mujinku smirked at his fuming uncle and pulled Shitenshi onto his back. In a stiff mock English accent he added, “Well, its getting rather late, old chaps. Shall we toddle off?” He gave an elaborate bow, causing Shi to giggle and tighten her grip.

“Might as well, the longer we're gone, the madder Kagome'll be.” Inuyasha still sounded disgruntled, but he was now lost in thought, planning ways to diffuse his angry mate.

“Indeed.” Sesshoumaru huffed.

“Right.” Mujinku snickered, leaping into a tree and taking off, Shitenshi laughing in surprise.

“Come on you guys! Or are we too young and fast for you?” She yelled back gleefully. In seconds the other two were in the trees and racing to catch up.

About the pictures: I finished Shitenshi's picky for now, though I'm not completely satisfied. Mujinku just needs coloring. I'll post them probably tomorrow and include links in the next chappie.
