The Arms Of Another
struggled through the snow, trying to keep her aching body moving. She felt alone, utterly alone. And to make matters worse, she found herself stuck in the middle of this hellish blizzard with out shelter. Her face stung as the tear tracks staining her cheeks froze. Alone. She ran off from Kaede-baba's village not too long ago. She didn't know what drove her, just that she had to get away. Away from Inuyasha and Kikyo. It was too painful to stay and watch as Inuyasha expressed his undying love for Kikyo. The others had tried to comfort her, telling her that everything would work out somehow. All she wanted to do was to be let alone with her heartbreak. That's when she had left, telling everyone she just needed some fresh air. If she had known that she would have ended up in this unrelenting storm, she never would have left. But she did, and so she was in her present situation. Her body was completely numb. She wasn't even sure if she was moving anymore. The scenery never seemed to change. It remained a dull, seemingly endless, white. Oh, gods she was cold.
was beyond the point of shivering, which wasn't a good thing. "Shhheltteer, wooullld bee niicee." She spit out between chattering teeth. If only Inuyasha was here... No, she would no longer depend on him. She could make it on her own. Her eyes stung, both from the raging frost and the unshed tears she refused to cry. "Just a little bit farther." She told herself. "Just a little bit farther." A bit farther to where, she didn't know, but talking to herself was the only thing keeping her from drifting into beckoning sleep. Her school uniform was doing little to keep what little warmth she had left. "Just a little bit..." She was starting to slur her words. Her train of thought was cut off as she spotted a brown splotch among the endless drifts of white. A sudden burst of energy flowed through her as she pushed herself to move faster. The snow was almost up to her waist now, and her skin was more than slightly blue.
pushed her body through the freezing obstacle. She was only a couple feet away from the door when she felt her body starting to give. Her legs were buckling over. Her body started to fall. A desperate cry escaped her throat. Falling, her vision started to swim. Falling, she felt the dark void seeping into her being. Then she stopped falling, crashing into something that grasped at her shoulders. Then she was lost, finally giving into unconsciousness.
was huddled in a tiny shack, hiding from the elements. Youkai or not, he didn't like to get wet, therefore, he didn't like snow. "And this is one hell of a snow storm." He spoke into the dim room. He was just sitting there, not particularly thinking about anything when he heard it. "NOOO!!!" The voice was desperate and weak. He got up from his less than cozy position and walked to the door. As soon as he opened it, he was met with gale force winds blowing into his face, and a figure falling into his chest. He caught the girl with ease and dragged her into the tiny room he previously occupied. He laid the girl down and went to work at trying to shut the door.
it was shut, he turned his attention to the collapsed girl. He squinted slightly trying to make out her features. His eyes widened at realization. "Kagome?! Kagome can you hear me?!" He knelt beside Kagome and shook her shoulders, trying to get a response. He took a closer look at the girl's condition. Her entire body was a deathly shade of blue and her clothes were completely soaked through. 'How long had she been walking around out there? Why is she all alone?' A wave of anger surged its way through Koga's brain.
quickly got up and searched the ramshackle place for anything to warm up Kagome. He found a large chest that happened to hold a large woolen blanket. He took the blanket over to where Kagome lay, and started on the task at hand. He reached down and began stripping Kagome of her wet clothes. He wrapped Kagome in the blanket and began rubbing her limbs, trying to get her blood circulating again. The blue started to recede slightly, but it wasn't enough. She needed more heat, and quickly. He stripped himself of his clothes and crawled under the blanket with her. Her wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her close to him. He started to rub again, staring at her face for signs of improvement. Slowly, but surely, Kagome's skin returned to its healthy pink hue. Koga sighed in relief as Kagome's breathing become deep and even. When he was sure she was warm enough, he crawled out from beneath the blanket. He walked over to the chest he found the blanket in and shattered it in one deft blow. He took the pieces over to the tiny fireplace that was in the corner. He searched around a little bit for a flint stone and kindle.
a matter of minutes, Koga had a decent fire blazing before him. He quietly got up, padded over to Kagome's sleeping form, and moved her directly before the fire. He moved his gaze from the amber flames that danced before him, to the sleeping girl to his side. 'She really is beautiful.' He absently reached out and began to stroke Kagome's raven hair; the fire shinning orange highlights were blue usually was. He watched as she began to stir beneath his touch. Her eyes fluttered and he retracted his hand, keeping his gaze on the waking girl. She groggily opened her eyes and stared at Koga for a minute, a look of sheer confusion on her face. Koga let out a soft chuckle at her puzzled look. "Where? What am I doing here?" She said while rubbing her eyes. Koga looked down into those eyes, 'Beautiful and unattainable.' As she began to sit up, Koga replied, "That's what I would like to know. What were you doing walking around in a snow storm all alone?" His voice was relaxing and soothing at the same time.
was about the time Kagome noticed she was as naked as the day she was born. "Umm, well..." She started to stutter as she covered herself with the blanket as best she could. She looked down sadly as she recalled her exact reasons. "Well, there were some things at Kaede-baba's village that I wanted to get away from, so I kind of took off without letting anyone know where I was going." Koga hated to see her looking so miserable. He reached his arm around her shoulder and pulled her into a comforting hug. Kagome was surprised at first but realized what he was doing. She started to cry. Koga cooed to her reassuringly, trying to be there for her in her time of need. "Shh, there there, Kagome. Tell me what's wrong and I'll try to make it better for ya." Kagome laughed, she knew that Koga was saying the truth. If beating up an entire village would make her happy, he would do it in a second. 'I guess I'm just hopelessly in love with her.'
smiled as he rested his chin on her head and began to rock back and forth. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't worry you with my problems." Kagome sniffled, trying to stop crying. "I don't mind, besides, it's better to get these sort of things off your chest. It will help, I promise." He started to rub her back. It reminded Kagome of her mother, when her father had died. A year ago, she would have never thought she would seek comfort in the arms of a youkai. "I just thought that Inuyasha knew how I felt about him." Koga tensed at the name. "I thought he felt the same, but he made his choice, and it wasn't me." She started to cry harder than before, burrowing her head into Koga's chest. It tore his heart, and yet, left him with a tiny light of hope. "Ano, if that mutt can't see how great you really are, then he doesn't deserve you."
appreciated what Koga said, but it was still sad to be named second best to the man she loved. And yet, here she was with Koga, a stark contrast to Inuyasha. He didn't berate her for being stupid enough to walk out into a snowstorm. Instead, he had saved her life with out expecting anything in return. There was no mission, no jewel shards to seek out for him. He had simply saved her because he wanted to. He shared his precious time with the runner up. "I know how it feels to love some one you can't have." Kagome looked up into his eyes, which seemed to mirror the emotion that she was feeling. Then she realized that he was talking about her. Some how, without knowing it, Kagome had done to Koga exactly what Inuyasha had done to her. "Second place is no fun." He said with a weak smile. Even now, Kagome could still see the love he held for her in his eyes. "I'm sorry." Her voice was slightly trembling and barely above a whisper. But he heard it and understood what she meant.
stayed like that for the rest of the night, in each other's arms, relieving each other's pain. Kagome fell asleep with all thoughts of Inuyasha and Kikyo pushed aside. Instead, she was thinking of her relationship with Koga. 'I think I could grow to love him.' With that she nuzzled closer to Koga as the last embers of the fire died out completely, leaving only the two and an old worn out blanket, to keep each other warm through the cold night.
