Sango sat at the kitchen table, tracing circles on the green tablecloth with the cap of her pen as she stared blankly at the pages of her science book.
"Hopeless..." She muttered, glancing over at her nearly blank sheet; "This is stupid; I can't get anything done when oniisan's with her..."
She shut the book, staring over at her calendar.
"Only one more year..." She said softly, turning her gaze to the left to a photomontage of her and her friends.
She smiled back at the crazy group, taking each picture in turn. Her eyes rested fondly for a moment on the picture of her and Miroku at junior prom, smiling lazily at the memories. It had been three long years, but most days, she didn't mind so much.
"S- Sango?"
She jumped, the call jolting her from her memories.
"Oniisan!" She yelled excitedly, running for the front door; "I didn't know you were... coming..."
In the doorway stood an extremely battered InuYasha. His shirt was torn in multiple places, blood shining crimson through them. Strands of his silver hair were stained red in one spot around a large bump, the fur on his ears pink with blood. He swayed suddenly, grabbing the doorframe before grimacing and switching arms.
"Oniisan?"
"I- I'm fin, Kagome calmed, it's okay..." He gasped in-between words, his bad arm running lightly over his ribs. His face was tense in a look of pain, his amber eyes dull as he stared at her.
Oh my God... Sango's heart was racing as she stood, rooted to her spot. It was the worst yet, and Kagome had calmed; I'm so lucky, he's lucky...
She held herself together, shaking her head and stepping forward, helping InuYasha to the couch, where he eased himself into the soft cushions.
"D- do you n- need anything?" She asked, silently cursing the waver in her voice as her tears threatened to spill over. He just looked so battered...

"Shh, Sango-chan, come here..."
He beckoned her with his good arm, pulling her close on the oversized couch.
"I'm okay Sango, shh, everything's fine."
She buried her head in his chest, and he moved just slightly to ease the pain. He ran his fingers through her hair, hugging her close as his chin rested on her head.
"What if, what if, what if..." She kept whispering, her tears mixing with blood on his shirt.
The question sat with him as well; what is Kagome hadn't been able to calm him, what if you had been the next Hojo?
Hojo. He hadn't thought about Hojo in a while. Nothing had happened to Sesshoumaru; in this day and age youkai were everywhere, so if someone died at the hands of a mated youkai most were taken at their word that the victim was after their mate.
And Hojo had been, he'd been after Kagome for years; and he was stupid, always had been. He'd been warned by Kagome what would happen, and he'd come after her anyway.
You're doing that. You know how dangerous Sesshoumaru is; a threat to Kagome and he'll crush you in an instant. But you sneak around behind his back anyway, you stupid fuck.
Seeing Sango's reaction had made him feel that much guiltier about the whole thing. Sango was a strong person, and he'd been a part of that around his job; as much as human, well, inhumanly possible. Her tears had really put the situation in a realistic light for him; Sango never cried, she swore at him.
But he couldn't just leave Kagome behind. He loved her, most definitely, nearly as much as he loved Sango. And he couldn't just forget about her, that was impossible. She was too... Kagome. Days after you met her her eyes still sparkled at you, her laughter still rang like bells in your ears. She was memorable, addictive even; she had charmed Sesshoumaru into being unable to let her go without even trying. And he couldn't figure out how, or why. He had known her forever, she was Kagome; the same sweet girl since the day she turned sixteen. Except not so carefree, or happy anymore. But under all the shit she had to deal with, she still glowed, she was still the same old Kagome.
He sighed, he had meetings next week; may as well sleep now and hope he healed by then; scars from Sesshoumaru always seemed to take longer to heal, especially when Kagome was involved...

Kagome awoke the next morning to the sun warm on her face and the quiet sounds of Sesshoumaru moving around. She yawned, arching her back beneath the sheets.
"Sessho?"
"Yes, Kagome?"
She blinked, sitting up on her elbows and smiling at him, the sea breeze twirling through the open window to dance across her face and through her hair.
"Where are you going?"
"America. Remember, Kag?"
He smile faded as he zipped his bag closed, pushing up the sleeves of his teal top.
"Oh, I'd forgotten..."
"I be back, in a week, at most."
"Okay..."
He gave her a look halfway between regret and his unemotional mask.
"I'll hurry," he said softly, leaning over to give her a soft kiss.
"I love you," she said softly, watching his back disappear out the door.

Sesshoumaru stopped near the front door, setting down his bag for a moment to slip on his shoes.
"Ookami."
"Yes, Masaharu-sama?"
"Kagome is not to leave the house, I don't want her running off."
"Yes, Masaharu-sama."
Ookami stepped forward and took his bag, opening the door on the way by. He slipped into the back, pouring himself a cup of coffee before Ookami snapped his door shut and smacked the roof twice, the driver instantly pulling away.

From three stories up Kagome watched Sesshoumaru pull away.
"Goodbye Sessho... I love you..."
