Chapter 3

In The Dark:

On thoughts of Reincarnation

He picked up the book from his shelf and fingered the sides of the pages. He sat down at his desk and Sesshomarou opened the book to its first page: The philosophy of the Soul. He had come across this book a few years ago in the U.S. when he was traveling there with Rin. She had been thinking about Inuyasha's situation, the loss of his mate, and believed that because she had been a human, and a miko, there was a strong possibility that she could have reincarnated into a future time.

He had told her that it was time that Inuyasha left the memories of his mate behind, he had only mated with her once and they hadn't finished the ritual of Inu-youkai mating before she died. Her soul hadn't bonded itself to him and their lives had not yet intertwined. Rin had given him an odd look.

"How do you know that?" she inquired.

"He told me not long ago about it. I found it odd that when she died, he had not died."

"Died? He would have died if she died?"

"Yes, that is the nature of mating with a Inu-youkai. If you mate your true soul mate, you are bound to that person." He said casually, trying to end the conversation. But, she was persistent.

"How does that work?" she looked at him, curiosity abound in her eyes and Sesshomarou found himself drawn into them, it was hard to turn her down when she pulled out the puppy-eye-pout. He sighed.

"When I mated you I had to follow a certain ritual to acknowledge you as my mate and my soul-life had to decide if you were my true mate. A Inu-youkai can mate more than once in its life-time but they can only mate once to their true soul-mate. Once that is recognized by the soul-life, your mate's soul becomes his and vice-versa. There are benefits and down falls to this mating. One, you gain the life span of your mate. Second, your love never wavers from one another; the bond it creates is too strong for your love to fail. Third, you gain the ability to hear your mate's most intimate thoughts when you are either making love or bonding." he winked at her as she blushed.

She remembers the first time she heard his thoughts; it was the night of their final ritual mating. It had made the experience definitely more exciting to be able to hear everything he thought and felt. She remembers her surprise and excitement when she felt him climaxing. She couldn't get enough of it even now, after so many years.

"The down fall of the soul-life mating is of course death. One mate dies the other follows. Inuyasha and Kikyo hadn't reached that level yet, his soul was still undecided if she was his true soul-mate. It had only partially decided but they had reached the shared thought part never the life-bond."

"Oh…" she looked deep in thought. "Could it be possible that if Inuyasha would come across the soul-mate's reincarnation, she could hear his thoughts?"

He nodded. "Yes, they should be able too. The soul will recognize its mate and initiate a new soul-life mating, in order to finish what it started. It can't be completed until the other soul recognizes its partner."

She sighed and shook her head slightly. "This is all very complicated. There should be some books on this." she thought out loud. She suddenly looked up to her mate and her eyes glinted mischievously

: So am I your true Soul Mate Sesshomarou-sama? :

Her thoughts slipped into his mind and they swirled with a rush of lust and sensuality. Her heartbeat went up as she felt the familiar tingle of his arousal n the back of her mind. She reached for him, linking her fingers in his collar shirt, her small frame leaning against him. Her eyes took on a dangerous glint and she unconsciously licked her lips in anticipation.

He looked down to the petite woman and smiled, as soft growl rumbled through his chest and she shivered. His eyes suddenly shaded to a molten amber as he brought his hands to her face and pulled her close

: Woman, you know what that name does to me! :

She giggled before his lips reached for her mouth; she willingly opened her lips to allow his hunger to feed her own. She sighed happily as he deepened the kiss.

Sesshomarou shifted uncomfortably on his chair and groaned at the heat pooling below his belt, now was not the time to be thinking of ravishing his wife, it was time to look into the soul-mating ritual. Inuyasha had called him earlier this week with some questions about that specific subject. He had sounded curious about some certain events that had occurred between him a human female at the University he was attending. He said that there had been a soul-mating initiation when he touched her, to shake her hand.

"What do you mean?" Sesshomarou asked. It was unusual for the soul to initiate mating without knowing the other person on a certain intimate level. It was highly unusual and barely heard of unless your soul recognized the other.

"I went to shake her hand and a jolt of energy passed through our touch, like when I initiated the mating with Kikyo. But I never intended to initiate the soul-life mating" He paused. "Do you think she could be Kikyo?"

Sesshomarou sighed. "Inuyasha. Forget about Kikyo. If she is that human's reincarnation, you have to realize that she is a completely different person. The soul carried by the body is its own entity, it does not carry the personality of its previous host, and I think it only carries the memories but I would have to look it up. If you are pursuing her because she is a reminder of Kikyo, I suggest you reconsider this mating initiation."

Inuyasha didn't answer for a moment. He seemed confused. "That's not what I meant, I worded it wrong." He passed a hand over his face. "No one can replace her, I was just curious to see if it was the same soul."

"There is a possibility. Why do you ask?"

"She heard my thoughts …"

Sesshomarou considered what this meant and told his brother he would speak with him after he did some more research on this development. He was surprised at what his brother told him.

Rin had just been ecstatic when he had asked her for the research books. She had pestered him with questions until he finally cracked and gave in to her and blurted out the situation. She had squealed to the misery of his ears and burbled about it for days now. He had managed to get away from the constant chatter and was now hiding in his library, careful to lock the door behind him. Don't get him wrong, he loves Rin and adores her odd behavior but there is only so much the Lord of the Westernland can handle from his mate.

He stared down at the page and re-reads the first sentence: 'There are a few things one should remember when a soul reincarnates. The memories are still there, deeply buried in the brain and they will eventually come back to the host when they are initiated by another soul mate but, the ones from their death will be the most prominent one and can seriously affect the new host's actions into its new life.'

He looked up from the page and wondered how Kikyo had died, his brother needed to know this if he wanted to have any kind of chance to successfully mate his soul. This was a second-chance opportunity the hanyou he could not afford to miss. He continued to thumb through the book and his eyes would widen in wonder every once in a while. A sense of urgency was beginning to build in the normally stoic youkai.

Kagome woke late on Saturday, she felt more tired now than she did before she went to bed. 'Is it possible to be more tired after 10 hours of sleep?' She'd been having odd dreams as of late; all she could remember from them was a deep resentment and a hollow sadness. At first she couldn't make out any images, no surroundings and she could only hear a desperate voice whispering.

She had strained in her dream, trying to understand what the voice was saying and all she could make out was "Why?" She had felt such sadness take over her when she had finally heard the elusive words. She would feel the tears start to form in her eyes but they would never shed, she would never have the chance to wipe them away. She shuddered. The rest of the dream always woke her. All she could see were two red glints in the dark and a snarl, it sounded like a dog in the fight for its life. She would wake up suddenly and the sadness would overwhelm her, creating a void in her soul.

The dreams were starting to become clearer; she could make out the forest, sounds of battle and a voice signing a spell. She felt her emotions go from anger, sadness, fear, disappointment, and a sudden small moment of happiness and forgiveness but it was faint. Then there was nothing, like death had taken over her.

She shook her head. 'No point trying to figure it out now, it barely makes sense.' A loud knock shook her out of her reverie and made her yelp.

"Hey Kag, some guy's here for you."

A guy? She scratched her head in wonder "Ok. I'll be there in a few minutes." She yelled back. She heard her brother scooter away and his voice announce to who-ever-it-was that she was being a lazy brat and would be a few minutes. She fumed at him and secretly cursed him every name she could think of, he was going to regret that. She grabbed her sweats and attempted to pull her mass of hair into a ponytail and proceeded to go downstairs to greet her guest.

Inuyasha stood in the entry way of Kagome's and was impatiently tapping his foot. 'Where is she? We were supposed to meet an hour ago.' He heard her come down from the stairs and he had to hold in a shocked expression. She wasn't even ready and she looked puzzled.

"Hey Inuyasha" she smiled at him, her eyes were still full of questions and he tried to focus on his anger with her for standing him up but her disheveled look was making him want to do other things than go to the library for research. He cleared his throat and made his best effort to look annoyed with her. It must of worked because her eyes widen just a fraction and she began to fidget nervously.

'What the heck is his problem? He's visiting me, unannounced of all things, and he's angry with me?' She was beginning to be irritated. He still hadn't greeted her. "What do you want?"

His eyebrows raised a slight fraction before he opened his mouth to speak. "Did you forget that you were supposed to meet me at the library for research today? An hour ago?" His tone of voice was laced with ice and he continued to let his stare bore into her.

"What are you talking about?" she exploded all of the sudden. "We were to meet tomorrow!" She was glaring at him, angry at his lack of politeness in her home. No greetings, just anger. That annoyed her, no matter who it was. They both stubbornly stood their ground on the subject, arguing for 30 minutes until Souta came down stairs and told them to shut up, he was trying to study with his girlfriend and they were acting like idiots. He also casually mentioned to Kagome that yes, she had made plans with Inuyasha to go to the library.

"What? How do you know that? Have you been listening to my phone calls?" She glared at him. Souta looked insulted and huffed at her.

"No you baka, you marked it on the fridge and surrounded it with a little heart." Making the a heart shape in the air with his finger. He narrowed his eyes at her and thought to himself 'One Souta, zero Kagome' Her face turned crimson and she sputtered some incoherent words out. It was amusing to see her try to hide it and watch Inuyasha blush and stare at anything but his sister.

After a few moments of uncomfortable silence, Kagome got herself under control and muttered that she would be a few minutes to get dressed. Inuyasha merely nodded and found the floor very fascinating and muttered a halfhearted "Keh!" to Kagome.

Their research had taken less than 30 minutes to accomplish, Inuyasha seemed well versed in Irish Mythology and she was thankful that they were forced into silence since they were in a library. Souta had managed to completely humiliate her in front of Inuyasha and now he was acting all awkward and weird. 'Probably because he doesn't like you that way you idiot' she mentally sparred with herself. She sighed and continued to wait in line at the check out while Inuyasha stood at the door, waiting for her. He was staring at the floor again. She rolled her eyes. 'He's either really shy or he hates me. Stupid Souta!'

She put the books in her bag, waved at her friend that was up to his ears in 16th century English Literature 'Poor guy, he looks like he wants to burn them' and joined Inuyasha at the door. She expected him to tell her he suddenly had something better to do or something but he surprised her.

"You want to go out for some lunch? I know a great little Greek restaurant in town. Best Tzaziki sauce on this side of town." He gave her a soft smile. She blinked. That wasn't what she expected at all.

"Sure, I would love to go." She let a dazzling smile out and Inuyasha had to hold his breath.

: Gods you are beautiful. :

Kagome frowned, she was sure she had just heard Inuyasha but he had never spoken a word to her. And if thought she heard correctly, she was going to faint. She looked at him and said, "It happened again."

"What?"

"It did it again."

Inuyasha looked a little confused. 'What the hell is she babbling about?'

"I heard you speak to me but this time I was looking at you and your mouth never moved." She insisted.

Inuyasha carefully looked at her and searched for the correct words to avoid this sudden development. "What did I say?"

She blushed and looked at her hands. "Never mind, I'm sure I got confused with some other sounds." 'I'd rather eat my sock then tell him what I heard' he nodded, seemingly accepting her words and offered his arm to her. She felt a familiar tingle when she touched him and it was strangely comforting.

Her senses were suddenly filled with the smells of the forest, wind and sandalwood; she associated that scent with Inuyasha since it came to her every time they touched. Usually it would comfort her, make her feel safe but lately she had to fight the urge to take her hand away and bite down an irrational urgency to run from him. Ever since she's been having those dreams, she's been growing weary of that so-called comforting scent.

'What a night!' Kagome mused; she had arrived late at home after her supper with Inuyasha. They had spent hours speaking about everything and nothing. Her sense of urgency had finally dissipated and instead of bringing fear into her heart, by the end of the evening his scent was very arousing. He exuded male, it poured out of him with every step, smirk, wink, smile and syllable that came out of his perfect mouth and oddly shaped teeth. She sighed. He was turning her into some sexual fiend and the worst part was she loved every second of it.

Her eyes twinkled and she smiled, the evening had been perfect, even ending with a kiss.
