The Replacement

The Duchess of Milano tapped her pencil impatiently on her desk, reading the papers which were neatly piled up on her desk. She felt like exploding as her eyes scanned the report written by Father Tres, she skipped the part of not finding the suspects of the murder of yet another brutal human killing (third case this week). She adjusted her eyeglass, before reading the part about expenses. If they didn't track these Methuselah or who ever they were down the Vatican would be in great danger. They were trying their best to keep the secret with the AX; it was dangerous for even the Pope to know. So far they had succeeded and Caterina was not blind to know that her uncle was power hungry. The Archbishop, Alfonso d'Este had been exiled from the state, but though the words were unspoken, when eyes met she knew that Tres, Hugue and Vaclav knew what she did and they too knew that she knew what they did. The silence that hung in the air after the report was submitted told everyone in the room that what they were thinking was almost the same as everyone else. She still remembered Abel, he had been more of a brother to her than the Duke of Florence, Farncesco di Medici, had ever been. He had been a good friend and not only that a responsible leader. But she also knew that what was done was done. Everyone assumed Abel was dead, but everyone knew that their beloved Father Nightroad was still alive, somewhere, after his last showdown with Cain. Although Sister Esther was the only one who would admit the fact openly, althought they all said that it was impossible that the Earl of Memphis and Abel had disappeared into thin air, even though there were no remains found, she knew in her heart he was still alive. Now they needed someone else to take Abel's place on the team. Even though everyone knew that it was next to impossible to be as strong and calm as Abel in the most difficult situations. She knew that it was impossible because as soon as Alessandro the Twenty-eighth advised that they find a replacement strong enough to replace Father Nightroad the members of the AX had only one thought in their minds `WHAT!!!!! Find a replacement?' Caterina knew it was impossible to replace Abel as a professional as well as a friend.

Hugue de Watteau jumped swiftly and silently as a cat, his elegant feet landed before the entrance to the Vatican. In a matter of minutes he was in the Cardinal's office, he had been here before but he didn't seem to like this place. He didn't seem to like any place after his family was murder and his sister taken away. He didn't like anyone, or ever appreciated another's skill in combat and the Duchess of Milano knew this very well. Her eyes widened as she saw him enter, she was surprised indeed. Then bowing low to her he said “My lady, I have news to offer.” He said in his usual tone, noticing the rise in Caterina's eyebrows his lips widened a fraction on the left corner. “I have someone to replace Father Nightroad.”
