“Assemblage? Kagome, are you joking?”

“C'mon, give it up, Kid.”

After her outlandish conversation with Kikyou, Kagome was left feeling helpless and exceptionally crestfallen. She was perplexed on what to do with the information that was revealed to her, going to the only people she hoped would comprehend and make sense of it all.

`Bad choice', Kagome rolled her eyes as she looked at the chuckling duo of Miroku and Shippou.

“Hey, hey, Miroku, maybe this Naraku can finally give you the power to control your perverted hands.” Shippou cackled, lightly slapping Miroku's shoulder.

“Hah! And maybe he'll grant you the power of looking more like a man instead of a six-year-old! Eat that, faggoty-ann!” Miroku jeered as he punched Shippou's shoulder.

“Jesus, why did I bother…” Kagome sighed as she stood to leave the living room to Miroku and Inuyasha's apartment.

“I'm, hah, I'm sorry, Kagome. It's just, well the whole thing seems pretty implausible don't you think?”

“Well, maybe bu-”

“Hey, you big jerk! Who's the married one here?”

“Oooh, wonderful cover up, Shippou. Now if we could fix that whole six-year-old appeal…' Miroku stroked his chin.

“HEY!” Kagome could hear Shippou bellow as she closed the apartment door behind her.

“Maybe Sango would understand...” Kagome thought out loud as she leaned her head against the apartment door, inhaling deeply.

“Understand what?”

“AH!” Kagome jumped at the sound of a certain hanyou's voice.

Inuyasha chuckled as he walked towards Kagome, a box full of ramen in his arms. His usual attire consisting of a baggy pair of worn out jeans and a white wife beater that showed off his broad chest and tight muscles. Atop his messy, silver mane, two radars idly twitched, a small, silver hoop pierced through the left appendage, evidence of a past long forgotten.

“Jesus, you scared the hell out of me,” Kagome brought her hand to her pounding heart. And for some reason, she knew it wasn't because he had snuck up on her.

“ Keh! Not my fault you're a scaredy-cat,” he mumbled as he took out the keys to the apartment from his pocket. “So what will Sango understand?”

Kagome quickly peeled her eyes away from the hanyou, feeling her face getting hot. “Uh, no.. nothing. Just something stupid, no big deal.”

“Some guy bothering you or something?” Inuyasha looked at Kagome before turning the key. He could smell the anxiety rolling off of her in waves.

`As if it would matter…' “Nope. Well I should go to work, don't want Rin chewing my ass for being late again.”

“Keh! By the way, tell Rin that Sesshoumaru said `yes' to whatever the hell she had asked him. Fucking bastard.”

“Will do, Dogboy. Oh, and glad the hoop's back, by the way.” Kagome smiled as she walked towards the stairwell.

“Yo, Inuyasha! Didja bring the goods?!” Shippou yelled from the apartment.

“Shuddup,” Inuyasha yelled before slightly smiling back at Kagome's disappearing figure.

A chilly night greeted Kagome as she stepped out of the Cineplex.

It was a refreshing change from the hot, suffocating mixture created by stale popcorn, sticky candy and sweat that loomed over the concession stand. Her shift today hadn't been too hectic, and considering Rin's astonishingly good mood after Kagome had told her about Sesshoumaru's answer, everything had gone pretty smoothly, moviegoers be damned.

What Sesshoumaru had agreed to was far beyond Kagome's knowledge, Rin had refused to utter another word about the matter, answering Sango and Kagome's questioning looks with a `Don't worry, you guys'll see soon!' Whatever it was, everyone could be sure that Rin must've done a lot of `convincing' to get the stoic, corporate lord to agree.

Kagome smiled to herself as she continued her walk towards the Shrine, `I don't know how she puts up with him….'

It had been almost one year since that fateful day all three girls sat around Rin's apartment. Everyone had almost fainted in their seats when Rin had revealed her glorious news, grinning and blushing madly.

After two years of dating, Sesshoumaru had finally proposed. Sort of.

“Well, what did he do?” Sango squealed, clasping her hands together.

“Yeah, how did he ask?!” Kagome giggled, bringing her knees to her chest.

Rin had been Sango's next door neighbor since they were both little, taking the role of Sango and Kagome's older sister since the day they all met at the playground and made fun of each other's futile attempts at mud pies. Ever since then, the girls had become inseparable.

Sesshoumaru had baffled everyone when he had taken an interest in Rin, bluntly stating one day that she `amused him'. No one ever questioned how they started dating, they just became a couple after Sesshoumaru's confession. Case closed.

“Hm? Oh he didn't ask me,” Rin beamed, a shade of pink staining her cheeks.

Sango and Kagome stared blankly.

“He told me we were getting married.” Rin's smile grew, hugging one of her throw pillows in her lap.

Both girls fell over, eyes twitching uncontrollably.

This news had been a lot to take in, but nothing had astounded the entire family more than Shippou's marriage to Shiori, his high school sweetheart only months after Sesshoumaru's proposal.

`It seems like everyone has someone…' Kagome mused as she neared the Shrine, shoving her hands into her coat pockets. `Even Sango and Miroku have something…though they're too shy to admit it.'

Kagome quietly closed the kitchen door behind her, slipping off her shoes and heading up the stairs to the bathroom for a quick shower, oblivious to the dark eyes that had been watching her from the god tree.

“Divine,” Kagome yawned as she slipped into bed, snuggling against the cool pillow beneath her head. The whole world fell silent as the young miko drifted into an unconscious realm; dreams quickly overtaking the darkness.

The night dragged on as the young girl tossed and turned, a strange scene playing behind closed lids as Kagome found herself running through crimson mist, molten eyes burning into hers through the haze. `Inuyasha?'

Suddenly Kagome's chocolate eyes snapped open, colliding with big, dark pools above her. A warm hand clamped over her mouth before she could scream, panic slowly registering in her dazed brain. `Oh god..'

“Shh. Don't even think about screaming,” the figure whispered, the deep, husky voice assuring Kagome that the intruder was male. A surge of energy ricocheted through the miko's body, faint, blue currents of electricity radiating off of her. Before she could release the balled up energy, Kagome felt something cool and steely against her throat.

“Nuh uh uh, better think twice, girl. Wouldn't want my hand slipping.” Kagome's eyes widened as she realized what the object against her throat was, slowly shaking her head in understanding.

“Good. Now I'm gonna take my hand away, but remember.. No screaming.” The man warned, cautiously removing his hand from the young girl's mouth, but keeping the metallic object pressed to Kagome's neck.

“Wh..what do you want?” Kagome stuttered, hoping, wishing, praying someone will barge into her room and kick this guy's ass back out the window. `Inuyasha….'

“It's not something I want, pretty girl, it's what they need.”

Kagome squinted, trying to discern the figure in the darkness of her room. She could barely make out his outline, but from the sound of his voice, he couldn't be any older than she was. And by the way the aura around him cracked and surged throughout the room, Kagome could tell he was a demon.

“They?” Kagome whimpered, trying extremely hard not to make any sudden shifts that would cause him to freak out and kill her.

“Hai. The mighty, defiance alliance themselves.” The figure stated, taking a seat at the edge of her bed.

`The Assemblage?! Oh god, what the hell is going on here?' Kagome began panicking again, having difficulty registering what the man had said. `What does the Assemblage want with me? Oh no! Maybe they found out that Kikyou told me about them. What if they think I'll tell on them? Snap! Oh my god, they set a hit man on me! I'm gonna die right now and I'll never get my first kiss. Unforgivable!'

The figure's brows furrowed together in confusion as dark eyes witnessed the different emotions that flashed across the young girl's face.

“Wha.. what do they need.. from me?” Kagome hesitantly inquired, balling her sweaty fists into her sheets.

“Beats me, sweetheart. I'm just the messenger,” he started as he got up from the bed, removing the now warm blade from Kagome's throat, “Here, keep this.” He whispered, placing a small object on the round nightstand beside the bed.

“What is…”

“Quiet. I was never here, got it?” he cut in, “I look forward to meeting you again, girl.” He walked over to the open window, a slight breeze ruffling the curtains, “and be sure, we will meet again.” And with that he was gone, leaving no trace, no evidence that he was ever there. For all Kagome knew, she had dreamt up the whole thing.

Quickly throwing off the covers, Kagome ran to the window and leaned on the ledge to gaze upon the tranquil, silent world. The crescent moon glowing in the dark sky, twinkling stars dancing with the clouds, a soft breeze playing in the trees, yes, no one would ever know he had been there. Not on a peaceful night like this one.

Kagome silently shut her window and went to sit at the edge of her bed. She sat in dark silence, replaying the unbelievable incident, still wondering if it truly had occurred.

Remembering the object the figure had placed on her nightstand before leaving, Kagome felt around the piece of furniture for anything foreign. Finally, her fingers brushed over something hard and cool. `Gotcha.'

She pulled the object off the nightstand and held it up to her face, eyes squinting in hopes of clearing her obscured vision. “A ring?” Kagome whispered, running a finger along the outer edge of the small halo, noticing that there was scripture written around the outside and inside of the ring.

“Jesus… I can't deal with this right now, “ Kagome sighed as she slipped the ring under her pillow before burying her face in the downy cushion.

`My life kicks the nuts…'

I'll hide you in my walls

I'll wear your skin as a suit
Pretend to be you, your friends will like you more than they used to

Kagome mouthed the words as she examined the silver ring in her hand. Losing all ability to fall back asleep after the incident, she had put on her huge headphones and cranked up her CD player, shining the small, black flashlight on her hand.

She still couldn't comprehend what The Assemblage wanted with her, if the figure was indeed telling the truth. `God knows it could've been one of the crazies that's always outside the Shrine…' What did she have that anyone else would want, or need?

The ring was a simple, silver band with cryptic writing inscribed both around the outside and inside. Kagome had been scrutinizing the inscription for some time now, marking off Japanese, English and even Spanish as possible languages. `Finally, school pays off…'

`I wonder if I should….put it on…' Kagome's gaze narrowed, lightly tracing the inscription with her index finger.

Suddenly her thoughts drifted back to Kikyou's story, about the alliance, about Naraku, about how she met Inuyasha. Was it Kikyou who sent the intruder, or did The Assemblage really need her? If they truly needed her, couldn't they send Kikyou to talk to her or Inuyasha, or at least get the message across a little less… intimidating?

`Maybe they got me confused with Kikyou…' Kagome rolled her eyes, “ chyea… since Sango thinks we look sooo much alike.”

Kagome had been hearing that a lot lately, how much she resembled Kikyou. Miroku, Sango, Shippou, even Souta on occasion had mentioned the likeness. Kagome didn't know if they were purposefully trying to hurt her or if they never gave any thought to it. It was always, `You do look a lot like Kikyou,' or `For a second there I thought you were Kikyou, sorry Kagome,' or her personal favorite courtesy of her grandfather, `Oh Kagome, I do hope you'll blossom into a beauty like Kikyou.'

`Gee, thanks for the encouragement, grandpa…' Kagome mentally sighed, pulling an old, round, yellow mirror from one of the drawers in her dresser.

Looking at her reflection, she felt disgusted. How could anyone mistake her for a beauty like Kikyou? No, she was simple. Simple and plain. She had her fair share of gentlemen callers but they never meant anything to her. Just immature, testosterone happy jerks, always telling her how hot she was or how unique she looked, blah, blah, blah, shut up…

No, now she knew why Inuyasha liked Kikyou. It might sound shallow on his part, but it was true wasn't it? She was stunning to say the least; no picture could probably do her any justice. If anything, having people tell Kagome that she looked like Kikyou should be considered a compliment, right?

As Kagome traced her brow, she suddenly felt angry at herself.

I'll hide you in my walls
your body will never be found
I'll wear your skin as a suit
Pretend to be you, your friends will like you more than they used to

“This is stupid…” Kagome spat out as she shoved the mirror back into the drawer, “ move on, dammit! Move on! Move on! Move on! You have too….”
