Morning Madness

~|*|~|*|~|*|~|*|~|*|~|*|~

The sun was rising quickly on that Tuesday morning in the middle of July. All the birds were beginning to coo and caw on the telephone poles, adding additional sounds to the gentle summer breeze and the beginning rushes of cars accelerating on the intersection just down the street. Local pigeons were strutting across the railing of the balcony outside her window. The sound of Mrs. Cho opening her coffee pub down on the corner of the street began to echo across the road, starting to irritate the girl mingled in the pink silk sheets.

Her hair was sprawled out over her pillow, some draping across her delicate features. Her arms were buried underneath her thick feather-down comforter that was pulled up to her chin. Her eyes were shut tightly, trying to keep out the light that was peering through her window. The shades were never drawn.

She moaned and turned over, her back facing the large and refined balcony. Her sheets ruffled underneath her body as she sighed and snuggled down deeper into the warmth of her comforter on her queen size mattress.

After three years, Kagome Higurashi was finally out of high school. After all of her hard work and devotion to her work in school, she and her best friend, Sango Taijiya had planned on taking a year off before heading off to university.

So here, at quarter to seven on this Tuesday morning, Kagome was lying in the warmth of her bed, setting aside the fact that she had promised to go out shopping with Sango at quarter to ten. But knowing Sango, she would fine great amusement in waking Kagome early and would come to Kagome's house much earlier, just to see the annoyed expression on her best friend's face.

Her cozy little apartment was located just on the outskirts of Downtown Tokyo. Located ten minutes away from all the hustle and bustle of Japanese life. It wasn't as big as a house, but it was a fairly large size for an apartment and it seemed to accommodate her lifestyle just fine.

It's red and orange brickwork on the outside gave it a classy persona, but the wood and drywall insides gave it a comforting and homey atmosphere.

It had six levels, and there was her room, 412, and it had all the furnishings an 18 year old would need.

She had a quaint kitchen containing stainless steel appliances, including a gas stove. She had a comfortable family room, with her fifty-four inch television equipped with surround sound. And her master bedroom, quipped with plasma television, queen size four-poster bed, a reclining leather chair beside her old English lampshade, her balcony that looked over the neatly kept, garden covered front lawn and her computer which she spent most of her time on. And Kagome also had a large bathroom with marble flooring and white tiling in the shower.

Her next door neighbor, Houjou Saniyomo was a good friend of Kagome's during high school, even if he would give her lame gifts every time he heard she was ill. But none the less, it was his way of showing he cared.

Houjou owned, Saniyomo Apartments. And when he heard that Kagome was searching for a place to stay, he jumped at the offer to be around her again, so he told her that she could live in one of his apartments, rent half price. And Kagome was ecstatic to finally have a place to stay on her own, not realizing that Houjou would have her residing beside him purposefully. But Kagome always liked Houjou…just not his gifts. He would come visit her at the shrine sometimes if he found out she was ill. And even offered to do anything to help her.

The day she moved in, he asked her why she didn't want to live at the shrine anymore.

"It's not that I don't love the shrine, because I do," she said as she hauled in her plasma television. "It's just; I want the feeling of freedom, to take charge of my own life, be independent." She placed it down and smiled warmly at Houjou, "Besides, I promised Mom and Grandpa that when I find a place of my own, I'll come visit and help around the shrine, with chores and stuff on Sundays." Houjou placed a hand on Kagome's shoulder and smiled, "You're so responsible, Higurashi."

So while Kagome tried all she could to fall back to sleep at seven o'clock. Houjou on the other hand, was out on his balcony with his normal blueberry muffin and cup of homemade coffee and was sitting outside and feeding the birds crumbs from his muffin. Kagome groaned and lay on her stomach.

`I don't want to get up,' she thought lazily, `at least not yet.'

But it was when all the birds began to line up around Houjou's balcony that Kagome got annoyed. All the birds were squawking and cawing and driving Kagome out of her mind.

Kagome buried her face in her pillow and sighed.

"That's the last time I sleep with the window open," she muffled through the pillow. She sat up and looked outside and saw birds covering her railing.

"Argh, Houjou," Kagome whined.

And so it was Houjou that drove Kagome out of bed at ten past seven on that Tuesday morning. She sat on the edge and stifled a yawn and scratched her head.

In her cotton sky blue pajamas she got up and walked out of her room and into her marble bathroom.

She gazed at her reflection and sighed at the half-dead looking creature gazing back at her.

"Then again, no one looks good on Tuesday mornings," she said with a smile.

She stripped herself of her night clothes and stepped into the white tiled shower. She adjusted the temperature before placing her body underneath the water.

Kagome shut her eyes and sighed contentedly at the inviting warmth of the shower as it poured upon her body.

Once done, she stepped out and wrapped a towel around her dripping form. She tied a smaller towel around her drenched black locks and walked towards the sink. She opened up a drawer and got out her toothbrush and began to brush her teeth.

Finishing with a rinse, she walked over to her black and yellow stereo that sat on a small wooden table in the corner by the lamp and turned on her C.D of Every Little Thing.

Happy with the C.D preference, she walked over to her mahogany wardrobe and picked out her knee length pink skirt and white halter top with the flower on the right breast.

As she dressed, she hummed along to familiar songs and made her bed, complete with seven throw pillows.

Kagome draped a towel around her shoulders so they wouldn't become wet and she walked back into the bathroom and took out her hairdryer and dried her hair. She brushed through it and smiled when she smelt the scent of Jasmine.

`Ah, shampoo, it's a good thing,' she thought merrily.

Kagome put her hair up in a messy bun and walked into her room while removing the towel that covered her shoulders. She grabbed her pajamas and towels and put them inside the dirty clothes bin by her door. Kagome turned off her music and headed down the hall towards the kitchen.

When entering her quaint little kitchen, Kagome opened up the windows and then took out the toaster. She placed in a piece of bread and took out the butter. She got out the orange juice and poured herself a glass. She took a sip then went to the front door to receive her mail.

When she opened the door she saw her next door neighbor, Kaede Keetani standing outside her front door with a cup of coffee in one hand and her keys in the other.

"Good morning, Ms. Keetani!" Kagome said warmly. Kaede smiled and returned the greeting, "Good Morning, child. Houjou woke you up again I see." Kagome nodded, "Yeah. Is he even allowed to be doing that? Feeding the birds I mean." "I'm not sure. But of anyone in this apartment, I'd say he'd be the one allowed to do it," she said returning her attention to her key in the keyhole. "I suppose you're right. Well, I'll see you later then Ms. Keetani."

Kagome bent over and grabbed her mail.

"I've told you child, do not call me `Ms. Keetani', I am an old woman, but that makes me sound older yet." Kagome smiled widely and chuckled.

"Ok, I'm sorry." Kaede waved away her apology. "No harm done. Good day, Kagome." "Bye."

Kagome opened the door and retreated back to the kitchen. When she entered the kitchen, she noticed the toaster was smoking and she smelt something burning.

"Ah! My toast!" she cried in alarm. She ran over and pressed the `cancel' button on the side and the toast shot up.

It was as black as charcoal, and didn't smell all too appetizing.

"Oh well," she sighed as she tossed the burnt bread into the garbage under the sink. "I guess I'll go get a muffin and a coffee from Mrs. Cho's."

Kagome took the last sip of juice and put the glass into the sink. She unplugged the toaster and began to put it away.

Just then the phone rang and Kagome stood up and grabbed the blue cordless that was on the counter underneath the cupboard.

"Hello?"

"Hey, Kagome!" came Sango's normally cheerful voice. "How ya doing?"

Kagome began to walk down the hallway and towards her room.

"Not too bad, how about you?" "Just great. I'm really surprised in you, Kagome," Sango said.

Kagome opened her drawer and took out a pair of ankle socks.

"What? Why?" "You're up already. I thought I was gonna wake you up!"

Kagome smiled and sat on her bed. "Yeah, I thought so too. But it seems Houjou beat you to it."

"Hmm, feeding the birds again?" Kagome raised her eyebrows, "Yep." Sango chuckled, "Figures. You know, Kagome, you really should tell him to stop."

Kagome stood up and headed towards her computer desk and sat down in the large black polyester chair and turned on her computer.

"How come?" "He's disturbing your sleep!"

"Oh, come on, Sango. I don't mind, I have to wake up anyways, right?"

Sango sighed, "You're too nice of a person. When you get a lot older people are gonna take advantage of your niceness."

Kagome laughed, "Yeah, right, Sango. You've known me most of your life. You know that I'll get fiery and blast at people."

Sango chuckled, "Ok, first, you're right. You sometimes get pissed. And two, it's called getting bitchy, not fiery." Sango began to laugh at her friend.

"Ok, well, excuse me!" Kagome shot back in defense. "So, are you coming over soon?"

Sango gasped, "Oh, my dear friend, is it that you want me to come over early?" she asked sarcastically.

"Well, I'm going over to Mrs. Cho's for breakfast, you wanna join me?"

"Hmm…I dunno…"

"What!?! Normally you'd be here already! Now you have to think about it!" Sango laughed. "I'm just kidding. Besides, I'm already there."

"What? Where are you?" Sango chuckled, "Look outside your window."

Kagome got up and opened up the glass doors that led to the balcony. And standing in the middle of the sidewalk in her baby blue caprees and white tank top with her cell phone pressed against her ear was Sango Taijiya.

Kagome grumbled and walked over to the edge, scaring away the pigeons and other birds. She leaned over the railing and shook her fist at Sango.

"You just made me waste ten minutes!! Those ten minutes are coming out of your wallet!"

Sango smirked and disappeared into the building.

`Idiot', Kagome thought with a smile.

Kagome heard Sango's laughing outside her front door and walked out of her room, down the hallway and opened the door.

Sango was talking to one of their friends, Rin Takenawa who lived just down the hallway.

"So you swore at him, did you?" asked Rin. "Well, yeah. The guy was being such a perverted idiot!" Rin laughed, her shoulder length black hair bouncing as she giggled.

"What's so funny?" Kagome asked leaning against the doorframe with her arms crossed, a smile on her face.

Sango smirked, "I'll tell you at Mrs. Cho's." Kagome shrugged and diverted her attention to Rin.

"How've you been?" "Great!" she giggled.

"Rin has a boyfriend," Sango cooed. Rin stood on her tip-toes and smiled widely. "Really!" Kagome asked happily. Rin nodded, "Yeah, an on-line boyfriend."

Kagome stopped smiling. "Oh, isn't that dangerous. He could really be a mass murderer, or a sixty year old, or a groper or…"

"Whoa, Kagome, calm down," interrupted Sango placing her hands on Kagome shoulders. "She already met the guy in the mall." Kagome looked at Rin wide-eyed.

"You did what, now?"

Rin smiled, "I met the guy. And so incase he was any of the things you listed, we met at the mall where there's lots of people."

`Well, I guess if there are a lot of people then she's ok.'

"What's he like?" Kagome asked waving them inside.

"He's gorgeous!" Rin squeaked following Sango and Kagome into Kagome's apartment. "What's he look like?" Sango asked curiously. Her long black hair swaying side to side as she walked. Her eyes glowing with pure amusement.

Rin dug around in her pink Mudd purse and took out a picture of a man with long silver hair, beautiful amber eyes, but no sign of emotion on his face.

"Wow, he is good-looking," Sango admitted leaning against the wall. "Yeah, but he doesn't have much sign of emotion though," Kagome brought up. "Yeah, but he's quite the gentleman," Rin said sticking her head up high in the air proudly. Trying to show off her miniscule body.

"You wanna come shopping with us?" Sango asked. Rin nodded and smiled toothily, "I'd love to."

"Lemme just get my key and we'll go."

Kagome disappeared around a corner and Sango turned to Rin. "She seems lonely, doesn't she?" Rin raised her eyebrows, "What do you mean?"

Sango smirked, "She needs a man in her life." Rin had a smug expression on her face and placed her hands on her hips. "Oh, yeah? Like you don't?" Sango blushed, "Shut up." Rin giggled.

"Ok, ready?" Kagome asked coming out of her room with her red purse around her shoulder.

Sango nodded and Rin said, "Yep."

The three friends walked outside and Sango put her arm around Kagome's shoulders. "Do you want a boyfriend?" she asked. Kagome blushed, "Wha-what do you mean?" "I mean exactly what I said. Do you want a boyfriend?" Kagome blushed more and turned around to lock the door.

Sango leaned over towards Rin and whispered, "I'll take that as a yes."

Kagome turned around, all signs of her blush had vanished and she had a smile planted on her face, her eyes shining happily, "Off to Mrs. Cho's!" she said.

Rin linked arms with Sango and Kagome and giggled, "Spending the day with my girls. This is gonna be fun!"
