Prologue

Inuyasha followed the soul collectors that would lead him to Kikyou. Why am I following them to her? he asked himself. I need to stop going to her. Especially if I have decided to go with Kagome… Inuyasha didn't have to follow them too far before he saw Kikyou sitting up in a tree.

She looked down at him, not completely surprised to see him. "Finally, you have come, Inuyasha," she said softly, "I was beginning to wonder if you had given decided to stay with my reincarnation."

Inuyasha stood still for what seemed an eternity before stepping forward. "Kikyou…I..I…." he stammered. He took a deep breath before continuing. "Kikyou, I'm not going to see you anymore. I won't go with you to Hell. I love Kagome and I can't leave her alone. Not after all we have been through together." He looked up at her for a reaction. "I'm sorry."

Kikyou sat and stared at him. "So, you will break a promise that you made and swore to fulfill." She sighed and slid out of the tree and stood in front of Inuyasha. "I have expected this to happen for some time now. If you wish to spend your time with her, then there is little I can do to stop you, short of killing the both of you."

Inuyasha stepped forward and wrapped his arms around Kikyou. "I'm sorry, Kikyou. You do mean a lot to me, it's just, Kagome has come to mean more." He felt her arms go around his waist. "I'll still be here if you need me."

The two held onto each other, unaware of the dark-haired figure that came upon them a short while later. Both were oblivious to the tears and broken heart of the young girl.
