Ch. 1 Kagome's Death, New Soul and Transformation

Kagome backed away from Inuyahsa slowly. She was not afraid of him, she just didn't want him to touch her. She had caught him with Kikyou once again. He didn't even deny being with her.

"Kagome, please listen to me…" Inuyasha spoke softly.

"No, Inuyasha!" she yelled back, "I have had enough of you going to Kikyou all the time. I won't put up with it anymore!!" She pulled out the now completed Shikon no Tama.

Inuyasha watched wide eyed as Kagome pulled the Shikon no Tama out of her pocket. "Kagome…please," he said slowly, "What are you going to do…?"

Kagome looked up into his golden eyes, her own deep brown ones filling with tears. "This is what you have wanted since Kikyou was resurrected," she stated softly, "I'll give this to you so that you can be happy." She closed her eyes and brought the Shikon no Tama close to her heart. Whispering, nearly inaudible, "I wish Kikyou had her soul back."

Slowly, Kikyou's body appeared next to Kagome's. Inuyasha took a step forward but then stepped back as Kagome's body began to glow a bright pink. He watched in horrified amazement as he watched the soul within Kagome enter Kikyou. Kikyou's body then began glowing as the soul entered her body. As soon as it all began, it was over. Kikyou was standing facing Inuyasha while Kagome's body fell to the ground.

Inuyasha stared at Kikyou before turning his gaze to Kagome's body. He slowly walked forward, knelt beside her and picked her up. "Kagome…" he choked out, "Why….why did you do that..?" He cradled her limp form as tears threatened to fall from his eyes. "I didn't want it like this….She was supposed to be here for me. For us all…."

Kikyou looked over her body slowly, not believing that she was actually alive. She then looked down at Inuyasha as he rocked with her reincarnation. Why did she wish for me to be alive? She thought. I thought she loved Inuyasha and wanted to stay with him. She knelt beside Inuyasha and put her hand on his shoulder. "We should take her back to Kaede's village," she said softly, "Kaede might know of something we can do."

Inuyasha nodded his head and rose slowly, still holding Kagome in his arms. "She gave you back her soul…." Inuyasha said softly, "Without even letting me explain. I didn't get to tell her…"

Kikyou nodded her head sadly. "We will do all that we can, Inuyasha," she replied, "You cannot give up hope." She surprised herself by her actions and caring about what may happen to her reincarnation. Moreover, she was surprised that she didn't want to see Inuyasha in any pain. I wonder if it's because I can no longer want to take him into Hell, she thought. Or maybe it's because of the kindness that was in the soul because of her. She pondered on this as they walked into the village.

They were immediately noticed by Shippou who ran up to them. He immediately stopped when he saw Inuyasha carrying Kagome. "Okaasan!!" he cried and jumped up onto her, "'Kaasan…wake up!! Inuyasha, what happened??" He looked from Inuyasha over to Kikyou. "What did you do to my Okaasan?" he asked angrily.

Kikyou ignored his angry tone and immediately went into the hut. A thoroughly shocked Sango, Miroku, and Kaede greeted her.

"My sister Kikyou," she said respectfully, "What brings ye here?" Her eyes grew wide as Inuyasha brought in Kagome's body. "What has the child done?" One look on the faces of Inuyasha and Kikyou gave her the answer. "She gave ye your soul back, Kikyou? But why?"

Kikyou knelt beside her. "She saw Inuyasha with me in the forest," she explained, "She came to the conclusion that Inuyasha was there to be with me. Without letting Inuyasha explain, she wished on the Shikon no Tama and gave me my soul back." She looked at her sister. "Please, Kaede, do you know of any way that we can bring Kagome back?"

Kaede looked a little surprised, but quickly tossed it aside. "I am not sure, Kikyou," she said slowly, "Once the soul has left the body, there is no way to get it back unless it is called upon. Obviously, Kagome's body has no intention of calling the soul back as she wished ye back of her own accord.

Sango held onto Shippou, who was crying uncontrollably, tightly. She looked at Kaede, tears forming in her own eyes. "Kaede, there must be some way that we can bring her back," she pleaded, "We have to find a way. If not for us, then for her family in her own time."

Kaede nodded her head. "There is but one way that I can think of. Inuyasha, is the Shikon no Tama still in her hands?"

Inuyasha checked Kagome's hands and found the small jewel still in there. He handed it to Kaede slowly. "Just what do you plan on doing?" he asked, "It's Kagome's. It won't work if someone else tries to use it."

"Yes, it is Kagome's. But ye forget, Inuyasha, that it was Kikyou's long before Kagome came to own it." She handed the Shikon no Tama to her sister. "If I am correct, ye should be able to use it, sister. Please, wish for Kagome to have a new soul."

Kikyou took the Shikon no Tama and looked at the others in turn. Her gaze fell on the crying kitsune. She felt an intense sadness fill her heart. She knew that her reincarnation had become the young one's Okaasan.

She then looked at the young houshi sitting across from her. She knew he cared for Kagome as any would care for a close friend. His violet eyes pleased with her to bring his friend back.

She pulled her eyes from him and came to rest on the taijiya. She had seen Sango and Kagome together, as close as sisters. The loss in her eyes nearly tore Kikyou's heart into pieces. It seemed as if the taijiya would break at any moment.

She glanced at Kaede, her younger, but so much older, sister. It appeared as if her reincarnation had found a place in her soft hear as well. She could see how much Kagome meant to her.

Finally, she looked at Inuyasha. His eyes were blank and lifeless as he held onto Kagome's limp body. She wasn't surprised to see him this way. She knew that she had to try to bring Kagome back. If not for the others, then for him. Even though she still cared for him, she was aware that the love they had for each other 50 years ago had faded to nothing more than friendship. The young miko he held so dearly no held his heart.

She closed her eyes and focused everything on the small sphere in her hands. "I wish that Kagome had a new soul so that she may once again walk among the living," she whispered. Almost immediately, she could feel a great amount of energy being emitted from the Shikon no Tama. She opened her eyes and focused them on Kagome.

The hut was filled with radiant blue light that enveloped Kagome's body. Slowly, her body began to change. Her hair grew longer and took on silver and red highlights. Her skin became paler and flawless. Her cheeks were marked with twin lavender lines. Her ears grew slightly larger and pointed at the top. Last, her body filled out in various areas. She grew a few inches taller, her legs became toned and built for running, her hips rounded more and her chest grew slightly.

Everyone in the hut watched, eyes wide, as Kagome changed before their eyes. As the light surrounding her faded, Shippou moved towards her slowly. Miroku and Sango sat there, staring in disbelief. Inuyasha stayed still, seeming to wait for something. Kikyou began looking over the innocent looking Shikon no Tama as Kaede fetched a wet cloth.

"O…Okaasan…" whispered Shippou as he sat beside the unmoving form. "'Kaasan, please, wake up." He didn't bother wiping away his tears.

Kaede stepped forward and placed the cloth on Kagome's forehead. "Ye must giver her time, Shippou," she told him gently. "Both her body and the spirit have been through much and require rest."

Miroku looked up at Kaede. "Do you mean that the wish worked?" he asked quickly. "Kagome is alive?"

Kaede nodded her head. "It appears to be that way. Since the body changed, it means that a soul was absorbed. And, judging by her new appearance, the soul was that of a fallen inu youkai." She rested her gaze on Kagome. "This will prove to be interesting. And strange to her and us all."

Miroku looked up at the old miko. "Why is that, Lady Kaede?"

"Because she is now inu youkai," Inuyasha said softly. "Instead of learning how to control miko powers, she'll have to learn how to use her youkai abilities. She's trading one hardship for another." Everyone turned to Inuyasha as he spoke. "Am I right, Kaede?"

Kaede nodded her head. "That is correct. And I'm afraid it may be quite hard on her to learn this."
