Ch. 2 Kagome Awakens and the Shikon Problem

Kagome slowly came to consciousness. She was aware that there were people around hr, but she could not think of why they were there. She opened her eyes slightly, then shut them again as the light from the fire entered them. She tried turning away from the flames, but she stilled when she felt a pair of arms tighten around her. She slowly opened her chocolate eyes and looked into deep gold ones.

"Kag…Kagome…" the silver-haired boy said quietly.

She panicked and moved away from him as fast as she could. "Inu…yasha," she stammered, "But…how? Why am I alive? I gave my soul to Kikyou. Why am I here!?"

"Kikyou wished for ye to have a soul, child," Kaede explained. "Did ye think that your friends would let ye go so easily?"

Kagome looked over at the old miko. "I…No, I did not think they would. But why have Kikyou wish me back? She had no reason to!"

Kikyou stood slowly and looked down at Kagome. "I had every reason to," she stated almost harshly, "I did this for your friends, the young one, and the one whose heart you hold in your hands! I also did it in thanks for having my own soul given back to me." She left the hut, still holding the Shikon no Tama.

Kagome stood quickly and ran after her. "Hold on a minute, Kikyou!" Kagome yelled. "What do you mean `the one whose heart I hold in my hands'? Who's heart do I hold?"

Kikyou slowed and shook her head. "Are you really so naïve and blind?" she asked softly. She stopped and turned to face Kagome. "Let me ask you something. Why did you give me my soul back?"

Kagome stared at her for a moment. "Uh…I um…I wished you back for Inuyasha." She turned back to the hut. "I know he cares for you more than he ever will for me. He's just a friend and will never be anything more."

Kikyou sighed heavily. "Obviously you did not hear all of our conversation in the woods." She grinned a little at Kagome's confused look. "Kagome, the reason Inuyasha came to see me was to say good-bye to me. He sees me as no more than a friend. It's you he cares about."

Kagome's jaw dropped slightly in disbelief. "What? Are you crazy? He doesn't care for me like that." She turned back to the hut. "How can you be sure he loves me?"

Kikyou smiled and tilted her head. "Because he told me so. Inuyasha has had no reason to lie to me. And anyone can see it when he looks at you." She chuckled at Kagome's shocked expression. "Can't you see it? The way he looks at you, talks to you when you aren't yelling at each other? Even more important, the fact that he protects you like he does. Yes, he protects the others, but he takes special care to see that you are kept safe."

Kagome stood silently and let all of it sink in. "I may have noticed, but I never thought about it. He always does things to show that he doesn't care." She smiled at Kikyou. "Arrigato, Kikyou. We should probably head back to the hut. I don't want everyone to think that we've killed each other."

Kikyou nodded her head and walked next to Kagome. The two walked slowly in the direction of the hut.

Back inside the hut, the others stared after Kagome.

"Why do you think Kagome followed Kikyou?" Sango asked as she rocked Shippou to sleep.

Kaede placed another log on the fire. "I am sure that she went to ask questions," she said softly. "There is much that she will soon start to ask, and we must be ready to answer her questions." She looked at Inuyasha who was sitting in a dark corner. "Ye will have to explain many things to Kagome, Inuyasha. Starting with her new powers and the fact that she is no longer ningen, but youkai."

"You think I don't already know that, you old hag?" he said, slight annoyed, "It's not like I can tell her right now. She's off with Kikyou!"

"Tell me what?" came Kagome's voice.

Everyone looked up as she and Kikyou walked into the hut. Shippou, awake now that Kagome entered, jumped up into her arms. "'Kaasan!" he squealed happily, "Please, don't leave me."

Kagome kissed his head gently. "I don't plan on leaving you anytime soon." She sat on the floor and looked at Inuyasha. "What do you have to tell me?"

Inuyasha was about to reply but was quickly interrupted by Kikyou. "It will have to wait," she said seriously, "I'm afraid we have a problem with the Shikon no Tama."

They all turned to Kikyou. "What do ye mean, Kikyou?" Kaede asked.

"The problem is simple. Who does it go to?" She saw Kagome's confused look and proceeded to explain. "In order to give you a new soul, I wished on the Shikon no Tama to give you a new soul. Since you seem oblivious to your changes, you might want to look at yourself." She grabbed a bowl of water and handed it to Kagome. "Look at your reflection."

Kagome took the bowl and looked at herself. She dropped the bowl when she saw the changes that had taken place. "I'm…I'm youkai…" she whispered. "You mean, the Shikon gave me a youkai soul?" She saw Kikyou nod her head. "Why didn't you tell me?"

Kikyou looked down at the floor. "It's not important at the moment. What's important is…"

"NOT IMPORTANT?? I GET TURNED INTO A YOUKAI AND YOU SAY IT'S NOT IMPORTANT!!" She quickly stood and glared at everyone.

"Kagome, please sit down. Someone will explain everything to you when the time is right." She waited for her to sit, then continued. "As I was saying, the problem is, the Shikon will no longer work with Kagome. It was the soul that was the source of her miko powers. Since the soul is back with me, it will only work with me. The major problem is that since the Shikon was brought here from the future, it should not belong here in this time."

Miroku looked at her questioningly. "I don't see the problem in that," he said thoughtfully. "If the Shikon is back with you, then you can protect it once again, right?"

Kikyou nodded her head. "I won't pretend that I understand all of this. But I fear that evil will once again be after the Shikon. There will be consequences with it being with me again."

"We'll be here to help you, if you need it," Inuyasha said.

Kikyou nodded her head once in acknowledgement. "Thank you, Inuyasha, but that won't be necessary. I protected the Shikon once, and I can do it again."

Kagome stood slowly. "I'm going to take a walk," she said softly. She walked out of the hut and towards the Goshinboku. She jumped up into the branches and looked out to the north.

"Kagome…" a voice said next to her.

She looked to her side and saw Inuyasha sitting there. "Do you need something?" she asked.

He looked up at the stares for a few moments. "We need to talk," he stated simply, "About what you now are, as well as a few other things."

A/N: Cliffy, kind of a bad one though. I'll try to get better with them. I know that Kikyou is kind of ooc, but I figured I'd try to give her a chance. I am usually anti-Kikyou, but I'll try to live with her.

I'll be having a vote for pairings. I'll need you all to tell me who you want to be together.
