Chapter 3 “Kameko, Hanaki, and Herutsuga”

“You went back?!” Mayuda asked as Hikaru sat with him, Sakura, and Satou at a lunch table at they're school.

“Yes I went back. I wanted to make sure everyone was all right. Something told me they weren't. Plus I had shards here so I would have to bring them back to the past in order for the jewel to be whole,” Hikaru explained.

“What about the jewel turning on you?” Sakura asked.

“We'll deal with that part when we get there,” Hikaru answered solemnly.

“My question is how did two devils from Dungeons and Dragons appear in the Feudal Era? I don't think they belong there,” Satou said.

Hikaru nodded. “I was a little surprised when Myoga explained to me what it looked like I though it could be something else, but when he kept going on I knew it couldn't be anything else.”

“So what do we do now?” Sakura asked, “I mean Naraku saw us with you that first time.”

“Don't worry about it Sakura. You, Mayuda, and Satou aren't going back. It was just coincidence that we all were there when Naraku only wanted me that first time. I'd much rather keep you guys safe then in danger,” Hikaru said, “I better go. I told InuKage and the others that after class I would come to the past.” She waved goodbye and then headed for the bus home. Once home she saw InuKage leaning against the wall of the well house.

“Your late,” he said.

“How can I be late when I never told you what time my class gets done?” she countered.

“Your family told me what time your class was done and how the clocks here,” InuKage said.

Hikaru sweatdropped. `This is going to be really fun now,' she though. “Let me just get my bag of stuff for the past then we'll go,” Hikaru said. InuKage grunted an approval and Hikaru headed inside with InuKage following behind her. Takara, Kichiro, and Ami all waved at InuKage when he came in behind Hikaru while the grownups looked on wearily. They still didn't believe everything that Hikaru had said on her tape, but when InuKage just strolled into the house looking for Hikaru they finally accepted the fact that what they heard and were told was true which also meant that someone named Naraku was after they're oldest child. Soon Hikaru had her red bag ready and they headed down the well into the past.

“Hikaru!” Usagi, Shippo, and Hanako cried rushing up to the pair as they came out of the well in the past. The three of them jumped into her arms and she giggled. InuKage rolled his eyes at this while the rest of the gang giggled/laughed except for InuYasha, Sakuya, and Satoshi.

“We should move on,” Satoshi stated. Usagi, Shippo, and Hanako got off of Hikaru and the gang began to head out to find the next Heavenly shard.

“Any idea where the next shard would be?” Tsunami asked as he had his arms behind his head.

“Who knows. The shards may find us,” Sakuya said.

“Oh by the way,” Hikaru said as she dug through her backpack and pulled out a book, “I brought this with us just in case we need it.”

“What is it?” Kagome asked coming up beside her with InuYasha next to her. InuKage was on the other side of Hikaru looking at the book she had brought out.

“This is the monster manual for a game called Dungeons and Dragons,” Hikaru explained.

“If it's for a game then why did you bring it?” InuYasha asked.

“Because if we see any more baatezu's I want to be ready for them,” Hikaru answered.

Shippo hopped onto Hikaru's left shoulder. “What other creatures are in there?” he asked.

“Many others, but I don't want to open the book now. I'll open it when we stop. Ok Shippo?” Hikaru asked. Shippo nodded and then leapt back to Kagome.

Unknown to the group but two pairs of eyes were watching the group as they traveled. “You think they have shards on them?” one set of eyes asked the other. This one sounded female.

“Yeah I'm pretty damn sure they do. Let's go. We need to get ready to ambush them,” the second set of eyes said. This one was male. With that the two pairs of eyes disappeared.

Suddenly Hanako's nose caught a faint scent on the wind. `It couldn't be! Not after all this time!' she though.

[Hanako seems troubled,] Inushiro said. Everyone glanced back at Hanako who stood there staring at the bush where the eyes had been a few seconds before.

“Hanako?” Shitora asked. Shitora was in her human/demon form. The Fire Fox glanced at her friends.

“Sorry. I though I saw something in the bushes, but it was just a squirrel,” Hanako said trotting back to her friends.

`Something's wrong with her,' Hikaru though looking at Kagome. She nodded sensing the trouble in her small friend's face.

“Keh, if it was then you wouldn't be so depressed as you are right now,” InuYasha said.

“InuYasha!” Kagome scolded.

“He's worried about her Kagome,” Sakuya explained. The others nodded reading the tone of voice InuYasha used.

“It's just…” Hanako began.

“Just what?” Mamoru asked.

“For a split second I could have sworn I smelt my twin brother, Hanaki,” Hanako explained.

“Brother?” Sango asked.

“You never told us this,” Miroku said.

“I would have told you sooner if I had known he was still alive,” Hanako said.

“Let's help her find her brother InuYasha,” Kagome said.

“No. You don't have to. He probably doesn't want to see me,” Hanako said.

“Huh? Why not?” Usagi asked.

“Let's just say we weren't the best of friends even though we were twins,” Hanako said.

“We'll just make sure that he's ok. Alright Hanako?” Hikaru asked going over the little demon.

“If she doesn't want to go then don't force her,” InuKage said.

Hikaru shot him a glare that the others knew very well what would happen next from seeing Kagome with that same look every time InuYasha pissed her off. “InuKage, sit!” Hikaru ordered and InuKage kissed the earth.

“Hey, InuYasha,” Neko called after the spell on InuKage wore off.

“What cat?” Inu asked.

“You smell that?” Neko asked. InuYasha lifted his nose to smell the air.

“Yeah I smell it. It smells like someone is getting attacked,” InuYasha said.

“Whoever it is smells like Hanako,” Kaze said.

Hanako's head shot up and she sniffed the air. “That's Hanaki's scent! He's in trouble!” Hanako cried going to her bigger form and dashing away. The rest of the gang followed quickly behind her.

Ahead of them in a clearing a fox that looked like Hanako, but with green eyes was tossed to the ground. “Hanaki!” a little girl said. She had green hair up in pigtails, blue eyes, a green kimono, and a green turtle shell on her back. In her arms was a sword in a red sheath, which she clung tightly to. She turned to face the person who had slammed Hanaki into the ground. “Leave us alone,” she ordered. The person looked like Sesshoumaru yet had 4 purple markings on the side of his face and his kimono was gray and blue. Beside him was a toad demon that looked like Jaken yet he was blue.

“Give me the sword,” he ordered moving towards her.

“Kameko get back!” Hanaki called to the girl, “Flame Burst!” Fire shoot from his mouth right at the man threatening his friend. To his horror his flames didn't even affect him.

“You will give me the sword now,” the man said moving towards the girl.

“Back off!” Hanako cried as she leapt into the clearing knocking the man away from the girl.

“How trouble some. Another one,” the man said regaining his composure.

“Hanaki!” the little girl cried rushing to his side. Hanako glanced back to see her brother battered and bruised.

She growled and her fur bristled when she looked back at the man. “So you're the one who hurt my brother!” she growled.

The rest of the gang arrived to see Hanako protecting the girl and Hanaki from the man and the toad. InuKage growled low upon seeing the man. `Why the hell is he here?' he asked himself. “InuYasha get Hanako, her brother, and that little girl away from here,” InuKage said as he leapt in front of Hanako. “What the hell are you doing here Seiunshikaku?” InuKage demanded.

“He knows him?” Houka asked. The others shrugged.

`What's going on here? Who is this guy and why does InuKage know him?' Hikaru asked herself.

“Nice to see you two little brother,” Seiunshikaku said calmly.

“Little brother?!” Tsunami exclaimed.

“That means this Seiunshikaku is just like Sesshoumaru to InuYasha,” Satoshi said.

At that moment Hikaru saw the sword that the green haired girl held tightly to her. `That's it!'

“Hanako get those two to safety,” InuKage ordered the Fire Fox.

“Right.” She turned to the two behind her. “Get on,” she ordered as she lowered herself to the ground.

“What about Hanaki?” the girl asked.

“I'll get him. Don't worry,” Hanako said as the girl climbed onto her back. Once the girl was on Hanako leaned forward and grabbed Hanaki by the gruff of his neck. She then leapt back to her friends. Kagome took Hanaki from Hanako as the girl got off Hanako's back. “Think this Seiunshikaku guy is just like Sesshoumaru?” Hanako asked glancing back at the two brothers.

“Possibly,” Miroku said.

“Stand aside little brother. My battle is with those two little ones,” Seiunshikaku said glaring at Hanaki and the turtle girl. “Junsai are you sure it is the right one?”

The toad nodded. “Aye m-lord. It is the right one.”

“What the hell are you talking about?” InuKage demanded. Suddenly an arrow zoomed towards Seiunshikaku, but he just sidestepped it. InuKage gaze shot behind him to see Hikaru with her bow draw and with another arrow ready. `Hikaru!'

“InuKage he's after the sword!” Hikaru called.

“Sword?” InuKage gazed at Kameko to see the sword she held. `Why is he after that sword?'

“Why he is after this sword?” Shitora asked.

“We were told to guard it.” The gang looked to Hanaki as he slowly sat up. “We were told that the sword will react to its true owner when we come across him.”

“Hanaki!” Kameko said as she went to his side.

“Are you alright Kameko?” he asked.

“Yes that fox there protected me,” Kameko said pointing to Hanako.

Hanaki looked up and gapped. “Hanako?” he asked.

“Nice to see you too brother. I would love to introduce you to my friends, but we have to deal with this Seiunshikaku guy first,” Hanako said.

“Whatever you want with that sword is no reason to attack small demons like them,” InuKage said as he flexed his claws.

“You wish to defy me? So be it.” Seiunshikaku charged right at InuKage who lunged at him with his claws. But Seiunshikaku simply dodged it and headed directly for the gang.

“Don't even think about!” Hikaru said as she held her right hand out towards Seiunshikaku unconsciously. Wind came from that hand and formed a small dragon, which zoomed towards Seiunshikaku knocking him away from the gang. “What the hell was that?” Hikaru asked.

“Look out Hikaru!” Mamoru warned. Hikaru glanced up to see Seiunshikaku heading right for her.

“Crap!” she exclaimed.

“Hikaru!” InuKage hollered.

Just then Kameko rushed over and stood in front of Hikaru. “Shell Shield!” she called. A large see through turtle shell appeared around Hikaru and Kameko protecting them from Seiunshikaku who recoiled upon seeing the shield.

“Thanks,” Hikaru told Kameko.

“Don't mention it. Your helping me and Hanaki so I needed to return the favor,” Kameko said.

InuKage leapt over to them. “You all right Hikaru?” he asked her. Hikaru nodded.

“Heh, you keep company with mortals and half demons? Pathetic little brother,” Seiunshikaku said.

“Shut your trap!” InuKage hollered as he lunged for his brother with his claws again.

“Are you wishing to fill an empty void little brother?” Seiunshikaku said with no emotion on his face what so ever and just simply dodged InuKage's claws.

InuKage growled low in his throat. `Filling a void? What's he talking about?' Hikaru though gazing at InuKage.

“You leave my mother out of this bastard!” InuKage said growling deeper.

`His mother? Wait! Could that mean his mother died when he was younger like InuYasha's mother did? That also means he was picked on as a child too since he is a half demon,' Hikaru though. Hikaru's mind flashed back to when she was younger.

~~Flashback~~

Hikaru is shoved to the ground by a group of 10-year-old boys when she is 8 years old. “Get the heck here half-breed,” the boys said to her. They then left leaving Hikaru alone on the ground.

Hikaru held her elbow as she got up from the ground. “Half-breed? Am I a half-breed?” Hikaru asked herself. She slowly and quietly made her way home.

“Hikaru! What happened?” Her mother demanded rushing up to her upon seeing Hikaru's bruises.

“Some boys came over to me while I was playing at the park and started pushing me around before they shoved me to the ground. When I was on the ground they called me a half-breed. What is a half-breed mom? Am I one of them?” Hikaru asked. Hikaru's mom drew her into a tight hug.

~~End of flashback~~

`If it was that bad for me then…' Hikaru let that train of though slip as InuKage charged at his brother once again.

“You will never defeat me little brother,” Seiunshikaku said as he calmly dodged InuKage's claws.

“Kameko drop your shield. I need to help InuKage,” Hikaru told her.

“Ok, but this was my only time I can use my shield. I am only allowed to use my shield once a day,” Kameko explained.

“Got it. Just stay behind me,” Hikaru said. Kameko nodded and huddled close to her as Hikaru drew back another arrow in her bow aiming at Seiunshikaku. `I must make this shot count. Kameko wouldn't be able to shield us if Seiunshikaku decides to come after us. I won't let InuKage hear any more lies!' She released the arrow and it sailed right at him yet it only struck him in the right shoulder and seemed to have no effect on him.

Seiunshikaku glanced up at Hikaru. Even InuKage shot his gaze up to her, as did the others. `That idiot! She'll get herself killed!' InuKage though. For some reason his heart leapt at the though of Hikaru getting killed.

“Human why do you attack me?” Seiunshikaku asked Hikaru.

“Because I will not have InuKage listening to any thing else that comes from your mouth! Everyone has a void in they're heart and it is not right to play with peoples, demons, or half demons hearts!” Hikaru scolded as she drew back another arrow.

`Hikaru's defending InuKage,' Kagome though. She also could tell by the sound of Hikaru's voice that what she had said really hit home for her. Something must have happened a long time ago to have that sort of pain in her voice.

“Yeah! Stop messing with everyone's hearts!” Kameko said.

“No one orders me around,” Seiunshikaku said as he lunged at Hikaru and Kameko.

Hikaru suddenly realized that he was aiming directly at Kameko who still clung to the sword. `Ah shit!' Hikaru wrapped her arms around Kameko with her back facing Seiunshikaku.

“Hikaru!!” InuKage cried out as he dashed ahead of his brother. He scooped up both Hikaru and Kameko moving them out of danger. “You idiot! Why the hell did you that?!” he demanded once he set Hikaru and Kameko on the ground.

“Because I wanted to. I was protecting you. He has no right to talk to you the way he did even if he is your older brother,” Hikaru explained.

“Look just stay out of this. I'll deal with my older brother,” InuKage said turning back to face his brother.

“Earth to InuKage!” Hikaru said making InuKage turn right around to her. “You don't have to do stuff on your own anymore! You have others here willing to help you if you let them!” InuKage glared at her, but his eyes slightly softened when he saw how determined she was.

At that second InuKage heard his brother step towards them. He whipped around to face his brother. “Stay here Hikaru and protect Kameko along with that sword,” he said.

“Didn't you hear what I just said?” Hikaru demanded.

“Yeah I did and I said when we first meet that I would protect you. I meant it. I will not let my brother harm you or any of the others,” he said looking her straight in her eyes. Hikaru felt her heart pounding as they're gaze locked for a few seconds.

Both of them heard Kameko gasp suddenly and they saw that the sword was moving. “Herutsuga! It's reacting to something!” Kameko said.

“The Herutsuga? So the blade has a name just like the Tetsusaiga. But why is it moving and who…” Hikaru paused upon realizing what the sword was trying to imply. “InuKage Hanaki said that the sword would react to the one it wished to wield it. The sword chose you!” Hikaru exclaimed. Then she glanced up to see Seiunshikaku charging at them again. “Watch out!”

InuKage glanced back to his brother coming at them then he reached out and pulled the Herutsuga out of its sheath. The sword was now as big and long as the Tetsusaiga. InuKage stood there glaring and growling at Seiunshikaku. “You will not harm them,” InuKage growled out. When Seiunshikaku was close enough InuKage swung the sword striking his brother right in the chest.

Seiunshikaku leapt to a safe distance from InuKage and looked at his wound. “Junsai. We're leaving.” With that the two demons left.

Hikaru sighed in relief. “Everyone ok?” she called.

Neko glanced around at the gang before answering. “Yeah. Everyone's good.”

Houka turned to Hanako. “How's your brother?”

“I'm fine,” Hanaki said as he limped over to Kameko.

InuYasha grabbed him by the nape of his neck and dangled him in the air. “Hey we could have left your sorry ass to get killed, but Hanako wanted to save you.”

“InuYasha!” Kagome scolded glaring at him. InuYasha put Hanaki back down on the ground.

Hanaki looked directly at his sister who gazed down at him. “You wanted to save me?” he asked.

“Yes. After they told me that whoever was hurt smelled like me I knew it had to be you. We're family Hanaki. What we did in the past to one another is something we can correct now,” Hanako said going back to her smaller form. She trotted up to him. “I forgive you brother. Do you forgive me?”

The gang unknowingly held they're breath to hear what Hanaki would say to his sister. “Yes. I forgive you as well sister,” Hanaki said.

“I wonder what they're apologizing for?” Usagi asked.

“We may never know,” Houka told the rabbit.

Soon they made camp and after they all ate dinner, InuYasha and InuKage ate ramen, they all curled up near each other. Shippo and Hanako were on Kagome's lap who sat next to InuYasha, Usagi was sitting next to Houka who was next to Kaze, and Kameko was sitting just like Usagi was next to Hikaru. Hanaki was lying down beside Hikaru on her left side. InuKage sat near yet not that near to Hikaru. “Um…Hikaru?” Kameko asked after awhile.

“What is it?”

“Can you sing me a lullaby?” Kameko asked.

“Yeah! Sing us a lullaby Kagome,” Shippo said.

“I don't know any lullabies,” Kagome said and the young demon's faces fell.

“Well…I kind of know one. Mind helping me out Kagome?” Hikaru asked.

“What song is it?” Kagome asked.

“It's from a movie. I saw it a while ago in America. It was called Tarzan,” Hikaru said.

“I know the movie you're talking about,” Houka said, “You're thinking of `You'll be in my heart' right?”

Hikaru nodded. “I know that song,” Kagome said, “I heard it over here too. Which version?”

“How about the longer version?” Hikaru asked. Houka and Kagome nodded. Then they all began to sing.

*Kagome*
Come stop your crying
It will be all right

*Houka*
Just take my hand
Hold it tight

*Hikaru*
I will protect you
from all around you

*All three*
I will be here
Don't you cry

*Houka*
For one so small,
you seem so strong

*Hikaru*
My arms will hold you,
keep you safe and warm

*Kagome*
This bond between us
can't be broken

*All three*
I will be here
Don't you cry

'Cause you'll be in my hear
Yes, you'll be in my heart
From this day on
Now and forever more

You'll be in my heart
No matter what they say
You'll be here in my heart, always

InuYasha and InuKage listened intently to what the three girls were singing. InuYasha had only heard Kagome sing once before, but this time seemed a little different. She seemed to be singing from her heart and the same went for Hikaru. Although this was the first time InuKage ever heard Hikaru sing before. InuKage saw the tears that stood in the eyes of Hikaru and knew that something was wrong as she stroked the fur of Hanaki who had scooted a little closer to her. `Why is she crying? Someone hurt her?' he asked himself. He watched Hikaru through the rest of the song and told himself to talk to her after they were done singing.

*Hikaru*
Why can't they understand
the way we feel

*Kagome*
They just don't trust
what they can't explain

*Houka*
I know we're different but,
deep in side us

*All three*
We're not that different at all

And you'll be in my heart
Yes, you'll be in my heart
From this day on
Now and forever more

Don't listen to them
'Cause what do they know
We need each other,
to have, to hold
They'll see in time
I know

When destiny calls you
You must be strong
I may not be with you
But you've got to hold on
They'll see in time
I know
We'll show them together

'Cause you'll be in my heart
Believe me, you'll be in my heart
I'll be there from this day on
Now and forever more

Oh, you'll be in my heart
No matter what they say
You'll be here in my heart, always
Always

I'll be with you
I'll be there for you always
Always and always
Just look over your shoulder
Just look over your shoulder
Just look over your shoulder
I'll be there
Always

The 3 girls looked down and the young ones near them to see that they were asleep. Hikaru carefully slipped away from between Kameko and Hanaki. “I'm going for a short walk ok guys?” Hikaru asked. The gang nodded and Hikaru left the camp with InuKage not that far behind. When she was a few feet away from camp Hikaru stopped. “Why are you following me InuKage?” she asked.

“I wanted to ask you something. You were crying when you were singing that song,” InuKage said.

“I was?” InuKage nodded. “Well that song just reminded me of something's I would like to forget.”

“Like what?”

“I…I rather not talk about it,” Hikaru told him.

“And why not?” he demanded.

“Because it hurts when ever I think about what those boys called me when I was 8,” Hikaru hollered at him as she whipped around.

He could see tears falling from her eyes and he suddenly felt sorry for her yet he masked it. “What did they call you?”

“If you must know they called me half-breed. I didn't know what it meant until I watched and episode of InuYasha and heard someone call him half-breed. It hurt alright and it still hurts when ever I think about it!” She turned away from him as more tears slid from her eyes. InuKage felt his heart breaking as continued to cry. She banished her tears away. “It doesn't matter anymore. They are somewhere in America while I'm here in Japan. Come on we better get back to the others.” With that she walked back to camp.

`She was called a half-breed?' InuKage asked himself. He remembered what Hikaru had yelled out after she fired that arrow at his older brother. `No matter what I will protect Hikaru and not just from other demons, but anyone trying to hurt her.' With that though in mind he made his way back to camp.

Too be continued…
