Chapter 1: A Normal Day

“Faster boys! faster!” the old fisherman, sitting on the wooden deck, ordered the others.
"Lazy old bum! Give us a hand," One of the fishermen bawled at him while pulling the oar.
"I am lazy! You scum!" the old fisherman rose up from his seat.
"Yeah, you thick-head!" another joined the two.
"You'll pay for this! Every one of you!" He threw down the Saki bottle which he was holding. It dashed to pieces on contact with the wooden deck.

"Silence!"

Every one stopped their quarreling.

"Boss!" the old man forgot all his anger and excitement as he trembled with fear.

The person referred to as boss, was exactly so. He was the master of the boat. A man who had a physique of the meatiest of all demons present in the land. His eyes had a tinge of red, which suggested drunkenness. The meaty shoulders looked as if huge chunks of meat were stored in them. His thighs indicated the same thing. The face was as big as a large meatball. The less said about his nose the better. All in all, there was a tremendously fat man commanding the boat.

"Boss-" the old man began.
"Silence, I said!" with one glance at the horizon, the meatball cut off the old man.
“Sir, dark clouds are nearing the boat. Seems to be from all directions, except the west,” A fisherman stammered out the information.
“Looks like we are in for some harsh treatment,” Another oar-puller remarked.
"Enough!" another bark came from the meat-harvest. "Pull those logs faster!"
"Need some help boss!" He said. "mind joining us, old fool?" he looked at the old man and grinned.
"Join them you fool!" the boss bellowed.

The old man without questioning farther joined the others. The clear sky had completely vanished. The fluffy clouds were replaced by their heavier versions, the rain clouds. Soon thunder growled in the sky. Occasional bright flashes lighted up the otherwise dark horizon.

"It's getting worse boss," A fisherman said. "And there's no land in sight." He quickly examined the horizon in the flash of thunder.
"Pull a little faster!" the drunken boss probably didn't feel the need for panic.
"Oh no...!" came the unanimous response which was mixed with fear and anxiety.
"What's the matter?" senses weighed down by the effect of alcohol didn't bring out a proper response from the boss.
"Boss!" every one left their oars and moved towards the center of the boat.

"Hey! What makes you get up?" the fat man asked after getting up with much difficulty.
"Boss, the wave's gonna crash into the boat," the fishermen nervously said while looking at the advancing tidal wave.

But before their boss could give any advice, the wave crashed into the boat and overturned it. None of the boatmen had a chance to save themselves.

3 days later in the village of Lady Kaede

“Sango, please stop these kids from disturbing me!” Inuyasha, annoyed at the two young girls of Sango, barked.
“Behave girls, please leave Inuyasha alone!” Sango called out to the girls from the paddy field. She was planting the paddy shoots in the flooded field.
“Mother, we are just trying to see what is inside the ears of Lord Inuyasha but he won't let us,” the girls shouted back. Both the girls went on the either sides of Inuyasha and forced him down. Then they pulled his ears and tried to peep inside. Their brother was also nearby and hearing the shouting of Inuyasha, he joined his sisters.

Miroku's two daughters were 11 years old and his son was 9. They previously busied themselves by listening to tales told by Lady Kaede. But after her death they had no other work to do than annoying Inuyasha.

Shippo was around and he couldn't stop himself from giggling at the kids' usual behavior.

“You moron!” Inuyasha had a frown on his face and his anger was directed at Shippo.

Shippo was 15 years of age. His physique had changed a great deal over the years. Much credit for that could go to Inuyasha. After all, he was his mentor. He made him tougher by fighting with him. Shippo went through all that Inuyasha had to go through as a child. Albeit the emotional aspect. Inuyasha was never accepted by humans and neither by demons. Shippo never had to face such a situation. So, he wasn't as tough as Inuyasha was.

But Shippo was really getting on his nerves thanks to his giggling.

"You idiot!" Inuyasha sprang up and this made the little girls roll and fall into the muddy water beside the place. He charged towards Shippo, who was too busy in laughing to notice the oncoming danger.

Inuyasha grabbed his long golden-brown hair and struck him on his head twice with his fist. Shippo cried in pain. And his loud crying was noise enough to get Kagome out of the village shrine. Kagome preferred a quite atmosphere for meditating. But almost every day Inuyasha and Shippo dashed her expectations.

Kagome gave Inuyasha a glare as she walked out of the shrine. She was more annoyed than first anticipated and Inuyasha's antics drew her ire upon him. "Sit!" She shouted. It had an immediate impact.

Inuyasha fell down, face first and Shippo free from his clutches couldn't stop giggling as the kids of Sango again started their usual work.

The day was like any other. Life in the village was peaceful with no nagging enemies to bother anyone.

Inuyasha stayed in the village for most of the time unless called upon by Miroku for his exorcism jobs. Sango became more of a village woman than a demon slayer she was before, so, Hiraikotsu mostly stayed in the village Armory. Kagome enhanced her spiritual powers by meditating and also improved her archery skills by shooting down raven demons that were abundant in the forests and with Inuyasha by her side she never had to fear the consequences of missing her target.

The kids of Miroku were again upto the same task of irritating Inuyasha.

“Quit it kids!”

It was Miroku's voice.

Miroku had gone to a nearby village to exorcise a woman who was possessed by a nasty spirit.

“Father is here! Father is here!” the children sang and ran towards Miroku, leaving their ear-pulling job aside, much to Inuyasha's relief.

“Don't disturb your Father, he must be tired now,” Sango cautioned her kids about the fact.

But her children decided otherwise. Miroku suffered the same fate as Inuyasha but unlike the half-demon, his hair was the kids' subject of importance rather than the ears. But soon they moved on to it. They decided to tear off the monk's earrings. But Sango's timely intervention didn't let that happen.

The children were making enough ruckus to draw everyone's attention but another commotion began at the village gate and that drew the grownups' attention away from the children.

"What's all that fuss about?" Inuyasha asked, looking at the crowd that gathered at the village gate.
"Let's check it out, Inuyasha," Miroku said as he stood up and dusted his clothes.
"Kids, stay here with Shippo okay," Sango told her children before joining Inuyasha and the others who had already reached the village gate.

"What's the matter?" Kagome asked the gathered crowd.
"It's a traveler, Priestess," A villager replied. "He just now fainted."
