Chapter 2: A New Task

“Move! Move!" Kagome shouted. "Let me take a look.”

As soon as she said, the crowd without wasting a second moved away. They held Kagome in the highest possible esteem as she was the head priestess of the village.

She settled herself beside the unconscious man and checked his temperature by keeping her hand on his forehead.

"Inuyasha, take this man to our hut," Kagome said after examining the man.

Inuyasha picked him up and carried him to the hut. Miroku, Sango and Kagome followed him. The villagers tagged along as well.

Inuyasha laid the man on the floor and went out of the hut.

"Thank you, Inuyasha," Kagome smiled and went inside the hut.

"Huh?" Inuyasha couldn't believe Kagome's anger diminished so quickly.

"Where am I?" the man asked as his eyelids fluttered and opened.
"Here, take some medicine," Kagome gave some warm herbal extract to the man.
"Who are you, Priestess?" the man asked.
"I am Kagome," Kagome replied. "You lost your consciousness at our village gate."
"It was you who saved me then?" he held Kagome's hands and said.

"Is he awake?" Miroku asked as he entered the hut.

"Yes, Miroku," Kagome replied and quickly took away her hands from the man.

"Is that you, Master Miroku, the great Monk?" the man jumped up with excitement.
"Great Monk?!" Kagome raised an eyebrow.
“Why do you need me?” Miroku asked him.
“Oh! Great monk, please, you must visit my village. Strange things are happening,” the man began.
"Strange?!" Kagome wondered.
“Where is your village?” Miroku questioned him.
“My village is near the sea, good monk. 3 days ago the fishermen returned and after that many strange things have happened,” he answered.
“And what are these strange things of yours?” Inuyasha was hearing everything from outside but seeing the man taking too long to get to the matter he decided to force the issue.
“A demon! Keep him away! No...!” the man fell back, stupefied by the sudden appearance of Inuyasha.
“You jerk!” Inuyasha was about to punch him but Kagome sat him without delay. Twice in a day Inuyasha had to bite dust.
“Ah! Thank you priestess,” getting back on his feet, the man said.
“Stupid Kagome!” Inuyasha grumbled.

“Sir Monk, 3 days ago five fishermen from our village returned," The man began. "They were at sea during that storm... they returned, but not with their boat. How they were able to land without that no one knows and no one even dares to ask them."
"Is everyone afraid of them?" Sango asked as she entered the hut.
"How beautiful!" the traveler exclaimed on seeing Sango.
"You jerk!" Miroku struck on his head and flattened him.

Kagome again had to give him medicine to bring back his consciousness.

"So, where was I?" the man asked after coming round.

Frown formed on everyone's faces and seeing that the man continued from where he left.

"After their return the children of the village have started disappearing."
"That wasn't my question," Sango said.
"Oh, now I remember...my name's Sano, lady!" Sano beamed. He was too happy to think that Sango wanted to know his name but actually, she didn't.
"YOU ARE A JERK!" Sango yelled at him.

"Quit it everyone!" Kagome raised her voice. "Sano, you were telling something about your village."

"Yes, now I remember," Sano began. "Everyone is afraid of the fishermen as they are always drunk. So, the men of the village don't go near them very often. Isn't it strange that women and children go to their house and that too at night?"

"Hmm..." Miroku ran a finger along his jaw. He seemed to be in a deep thought.
"This has been the story ever since those fishermen returned," Sano continued. "Every night we wake up to find our women not in their beds but at dawn they are back again"

"Interesting!" Miroku was still running his finger along his jaw. His interest had doubled after hearing the last part.

"I myself woke up one night to keep an eye on my wife and I saw her go out of the house towards the house of the fishermen," Sano said.

"And then?" Miroku asked interrupting him.

"I followed her but I was too afraid to go towards the fishermen's house. I beg you good monk, you must help us. Our village needs your help,” Sano pleaded. He bowed before Miroku to show his desperation.
“Alright I will go,” Miroku assured Sano.
“This time I will accompany you and Inuyasha,” Sango said. Somehow she understood the reason behind Miroku's eagerness.

Although Miroku was married to Sango and had three kids, he could not give up his previous habits. He accepted all sorts of tasks with much eagerness but if the task had women involved then that eagerness somehow increased ten-fold.

“And I am coming too,” Kagome said.

Suddenly a gust of wind came in through the open window. And screams of the villagers followed soon after…

“Brother Sesshomaru!” Kagome thought.
"What's all that noise for?" Inuyasha prepared to go out of the hut.
"Wait!" Kagome stopped him. "I'll check it."

Kagome came out of the hut. She saw the gathered mob disperse out of fear. The villagers were running about in all directions. It was a complete chaos.

"Stop!" Kagome screamed. And immediately the villagers stopped.

"A demon! Save us, priestess!" A villager came towards Kagome and on his knees he pleaded for help.

Amidst all this turmoil one person remained unfazed. It was none other than that person who was causing all the chaos and seeing HIM the villagers lost their wits and ran around like mad men.

He was descending from his aerial position. And that made a small tornado of dust around him which made visibility poor. But after he had completed his landing and the dust had settled, the people around him recognized him.

"Brother Sesshomaru!" Kagome called out and approached the demon Lord.

The villagers were still trembling with fear but their running around had ceased.

It was Sesshomaru after all, the cold stare he gave to any and everyone was enough to make them afraid. Even the strongest of all humans would have run away in fear, leave alone puny villagers.

He was searching someone. But the villagers thought otherwise and so every time his gaze fell on them they backed away.

“Rin is not here brother," understanding Sesshomaru's reason for coming to the village. Kagome said. "She went with Kohaku to train in the woods, you can-”

Before Kagome could finish, Sesshomaru went up in the air and left.

“As cold as ever!” Kagome sighed and walked away. So did the mob.

“So, tomorrow morning we will set out for this village of yours,” Miroku ended their discussion with Sano.
"That's so gracious of you my lord," Sano again bowed before him.

It was decided that the traveler would stay in the hut for the night while Inuyasha and Kagome would stay in the house of Miroku which was just beside the hut.
