Chapter 3: Unseen Enemy

The forests around Kaede's village remained as usual, teeming with demons of various types, from harmless fox demons to the harmful centipedes, ravens and many more.

The central and the most dangerous part of the forest was used by Inuyasha and the rest whenever they needed any training. Kohaku and Rin were exactly at that place. Rin had nothing to fear when she was with Kohaku. So, she could be at ease while practicing archery.

“Rin, see another of those Centipedes!” Kohaku shouted while ripping apart a giant snake demon with his scythe.

“Yeah, I can see” Rin replied as she fired a sacred arrow towards it.

The sacred arrow went at the speed of lightning but it didn't hit the target, the demon was fast enough to evade it.

“Oh no! I will try again,” Rin readied the bow and started taking aim.

But the demon had come too close by then to release her arrow. She was defenseless and Kohaku too far away to help her. The situation being so sudden caused panic in Rin's mind and being afraid she stood where she was, letting go of the sacred arrow and the bow which perhaps could have saved her.

"Help, Kohaku...!" Rin shouted with her eyes shut. She didn't want to look at the demon.

The demon's shadow had covered the area around Rin in complete darkness. The foliage itself had shut out the sunlight but whatever faint rays could penetrate the dense covering, were also shut out by the demon's body.

The centipede's poisonous tongue let out the acidic fluids from within its mouth and those fluids made contact with the ground and corroded everything present there. It must have been the queen of all the other centipede demons of the forest. Seeing its population diminishing it must have acted out of desperation.

But it was a desperate situation for Rin too. Kohaku had already begun his run towards the Centipede but he knew that it was too late and more so when he found another of the bigger Centipedes blocking his path.

“Help me...! Kohaku...!” Rin screamed again as the Centipede neared her defenseless body.

"Rin...!" Kohaku shouted. The centipede demon had coiled around Rin and was preparing to spit its poisonous fluid.

"Help...! Lord Sesshomaru...!" Although the demon lord wasn't present there Rin took his name.

The demon's face came down at a tremendous pace. Rin was about to be devoured.

But before it could touch her, it was ripped apart. First in two halves and then to millions of pieces.

The crumbling of the demon's flesh blocked the vision of Rin. She was unable to see who her savior was.

"Rin," It was a voice that Rin craved to hear but heard only seldom.

"L-Lord S-Sesshomaru," Rin stammered. She was still panic-stricken.

"Thanks to Lord Sesshomaru you are safe, Rin," Kohaku eased himself up from the ground.

“Thank you, Lord Sesshomaru,” Rin thanked her Lord on her knees.

Without uttering a word Sesshomaru gave her the new Kimono, he had brought for her and prepared for his departure.

“Wait, Lord Sesshomaru, please wait," Rin rose up. "I will wear this and return in a moment.”

Characteristically Sesshomaru didn't reply.

Taking his silence for approval, Rin went to get herself dressed in her new Kimono. She went behind a huge tree for that.

Her excitement on seeing Sesshomaru was beyond all other feelings. She was just about to be devoured by a demon but that seemed to be a thing-of-the-past for her. She wasn't afraid anymore. She was feeling secure. She knew no one would dare lay hands upon her when her demon lord was around.

Her ecstasy was beyond control. She quickly undressed herself and with one proud look at herself she began dressing up in her new Kimono. Her white skin was as beautiful as ever but what would have happened to it had it made contact with the acid of that demon? She wouldn't have been so happy. No, she wouldn't have even felt sorrow because she would have died then and there.

Rin was very happy perhaps too happy to even notice that secretly pair of red eyes were watching her. But what could a mere human notice when the great demon lord's powerful nose was unable to sniff out anything different from the surrounding. The place was filled with the stench of demon blood but it was a child's play for Lord Sesshomaru to get the smell of a different creature amidst all other smells.

Perhaps his senses were blocked by the sweet scent of Rin. But he still could have deciphered her scent from all the rest and then the other smells separately. But, why wasn't he able to smell anything?

“Here I am Lord Sesshomaru,” Rin smiled as she approached her lord.

“I am leaving Rin,” Sesshomaru said. He didn't show any affection for the human girl even when he wanted to.

Sesshomaru looked at Kohaku who had by then finished gathering the bones of the demon he killed. The look said it all to him. He understood that he was leaving and he wanted him to protect the human girl in his absence.

Sesshomaru spread out his fluff and went up in the air; his destination was the Western fortress. And as he crossed the canopy, which was not letting the sunlight enter, two flowers fell down along with some petals and leaves. Rin was exactly standing below that canopy as the petals and leaves after combining with the sunlight rained around her. She picked up the two flowers which had fallen at her feet and looked up and silently thanked her Lord with a smile on her face.
