InuYasha's Strength

Chapter 1
In the Beginning

“Then, the handsome prince took his princess and whisked her away to his castle, where they lived happily ever after.” Kagome closed the book. As she finished she looked at her son, sleeping content wrapped in her arms. She kissed him gently and looked up at InuYasha who stared out the window of her hospital room; a dark frown creased his brow. She frowned.

“InuYasha?” She called quietly, trying not to wake the sleeping hanyou in her arms. InuYasha?”

InuYasha seemed to wake up from a passing dream. She watched as different emotions crossed his face as her turned to face her.

“Don't worry Kags.” InuYasha said as he approached her bed. Everything will be all right, I promise.”

“InuYasha, Naraku-.”

“Don't Kags. Just don't. He said as he turned his attention back to the window and the city below.

“InuYasha, I only-.”

“Kagome.” He said warningly. “Just drop it.”

“InuYasha! He's escaped and you want to just drop it?”

“Kagome, you'll hurt yourself and the baby if you get stressed out again.”

“Come on InuYasha, you just don't want to-.”

“I DON'T WANT TO SEE YOU GET HURT AGAIN!!!” He cried angrily, causing a chain of reactions to occur. Keitario jumped in his mother's arms, causing her to shudder and the baby to tense- causing a contraction. Kagome hissed and wince as the pain became intense. She felt his strong hand slip into hers and his fingers became entwined with her own. She opened her eyes to his concerned amber gaze.

“I'm sorry Kags. I'm so sorry.”

“InuYasha, its ok. I just scared the baby that's all.”

“No Kags. Its not.” She scooted over in the small hospital bed and patted the vacant area beside her, motioning for her to sit next to her. He hesitated at first, but gave in as the need to be near her and his family was just too great. The need to protect them was intense, the need to fell them-safe in his arms was too hard for him to ignore. He sat down, but pulled Kagome to him with Keitaro and their yet to be born child between himself and his mate. His Kagome. He watched as Kagome slowly drifted to sleep. `My Kagome'. He thought. `I'll die before I let him take her from me.' He pulled her in closer and pulled the coverlet over both Keitaro and Kagome. Kagome let a content sigh escape her lips. `It was too close.' She thought as she drifted off. `I shouldn't get so easily stressed out. It's not like he knows where we live or anything.'

-*-*-*-*-*-

Kagome woke to InuYasha's voice and the voice of another male outside her room. She looked down at the small boy who was still snuggled deep within her arms. She smiled as she lowered her head to kiss him. As she rose back up, the baby gave her a `kick' followed by a small but very present contraction. She groaned as the small pain, as soon as she did though, she knew it was a mistake.

InuYasha had awoke before dawn, he had sensed something, but couldn't distinguish what it was. He looked at the figures sleeping peacefully in his arms and smiled.

InuYasha had known from early on what the baby was going to be. Back when Kagome's scent had first changed. He really hadn't stuck to his `fertility cycle' as Miroku had put it with Kagome. But as Keitaro got older, InuYasha realized that he wasn't there when Kagome had first learned of Keitaro's existence. His girl, his mate and he didn't even know that she housed his child with her the last time he saw her before he had married Kikyo.

`I was preoccupied.' He thought bitterly. `Still, that's now excuse.'

He looked down at Kagome again. He fought back the urge to sigh as he kissed her forehead gently. He had been so stupid. He betrayed her by agreeing to save Kikyo's honor. In the end, he almost lost the one he marked as his own, the one that accepted him as he was. The one who loved him unconditionally- the only one he truly ever loved.
Kagome.

*****Flashback*****

InuYasha had picked up his diploma from the office, not wanting to deal with the after effects of school. He had rushed his studies so he could begin college, graduate from there and take over his fathers company. InuYasha had so many plans. It was all ruined by one night. One drink: one place and one person.

Kikyo.

As he left the college grounds, he caught her scent in the wind, it was slightly different but then she held no other scent than his. He looked around and saw her at the coffee shop across the street with Sango and Miroku. She was just sitting there, with a smile across her face, trying hard to look happy.

`I did this to her. I hurt her; I made her sad. She must hate me.'

While he was lost in thought, Kagome had seen him. She sat there for a minute, looking at the man who had once been her mate.

“InuYasha.” She whispered tearfully.

“What Kagome?” Sango asked. Kagome didn't answer as she was almost out the door. As she walked outside, she looked at where InuYasha had been. He was gone.

“That must be a sign. It truly isn't meant to be between us.” She whispered as she took off down the street.

She hadn't seen him. She hadn't felt his gaze. She couldn't anymore. InuYasha felt his heart shatter as he realized what this meant. She had let him go. She wasn't his anymore. Regardless of what they had done together, the love they had shared- they didn't belong with each other anymore.

Their unbreakable love- their blood bond meant nothing now. Nothing tied them together. And it was all because of his stupidity.

*****End of Flashback*****

InuYasha shuddered at the memory. He had missed her so much during that time, and during that time, she had needed him so much. He held her tightly for a minute, recalling how empty he felt every time he lay with Kikyo. How he felt so numb every time he tried to reach for Kagome, and instead found Kikyo in his arms.

“That will NEVER happen AGAIN.” He said as he gazed at his beloveds sleeping face. He kissed her softly, and lay his chin on her head. He suddenly caught a familiar scent. InuYasha got up carefully and covered up his family yet again. He gave one last look at the sleeping mother and child as he walked out the door to meet his brother.

“Sesshomaru?”

“How is Kagome InuYasha?” Sango asked as she came in behind.

“It was- a false alarm.”

“Did it have anything to do with Naraku?” Miroku asked.

“Sango, Kagome is sleeping right now but I would like someone to be in there when she gets up. So she doesn't worry.”

“All right InuYasha.” Sango said as she walked toward Kagome's room. “So you know I always get the information I need from Miroku so whatever you say I'll find out eventually.” Sango said as she handed her sleeping daughter to Miroku.

“Fine Sango. Please just go.” His tone was serious, yet a tinge of sadness hung on his words, causing everyone to become tense. Sango nodded and walked into Kagome's room.

“InuYasha, I know this must've been Naraku but-.”

“He knows where we live, Miroku.”

“What?”

“Kagome thinks she came in on a conversation that YOU and I were talking about the bastards escape.”

“Got it.” Miroku said with his thumb up.

“Naraku has contacted you then?” Sesshomaru said in a stating tone, rather than a questioning. “I see he STILL lacks wisdom.”

“Yeah.” InuYasha agreed. “Still he knows where we are. Kagome, Keitaro and the baby aren't safe.”

“Did he say anything InuYasha?” Sesshomaru asked in his normal tone.

“Yes, what did he say?” Miroku asked suddenly interested.

“He said he was going to make good on his promise.”

“His promise?” Miroku and Sesshomaru asked in unison.

“Yeah.”

“Which is?” Sesshomaru asked annoyed.

“He's going to try-.” Suddenly a familiar groan broke through the conversation. Neither Sesshomaru nor Miroku say InuYasha leave, but knew where he was when they turned to find him missing.
