//WIth love...// Inuyasha kept thinking. It was all he could think. //Why?// he thought. He knew he was gaining on them, because the mushrooms were popping up ahead of him.
"So why did you come with me, Kagome? I thought you loved the puppy." Kouga said. Kagome looked up in surprise.
"Why would you think that? Who EVER said I loved him?" Kagome asked.
"Oh, no one said it, but I smelled the tears in your eyes when you saw him lying there." Kouga said.
Inuyasha could hear them talking. //'I could smell the tears in your eyes when you saw him lying there.'// he thought. He had heard Kouga say it.
"I... Well... I thought I did love him. But he was just so clueless about it. And he always calls me wench.... It hurts me to be around him anymore. But I hate to see him hurt. Anyways, he only wanted me for the jewel shards. So I guess it doesn't matter." Kagome replied truthfully.
Inuyasha, though he still could not see them, heard what she said. The prayer beads around his neck glowed an odd amber color, but he didn't notice. The pain inside of Inuyasha wasn't from his fall, or from fatigue, it was from his heart. // How could I have ever let her think that? I didn't know it hurt her that much.... Would she even understand? Would she understand that I loved her? How could I tell her, when I couldn't even see that she loved me? What's the point in following? She doesn't care for me anymore. And she thought I only needed her to see the jewel shards.... Oh, this is painful. // Inuyasha slowed his running to a walk. Then his walk to a stop, and he sat on a rock.
The jewel shards around Kagome's neck began to glow, but she didn't see them. But suddenly, she heard Inuyasha's voice inside of her head, echoing. // I must be hearing his thoughts... // Kagome thought quickly, but was interrupted by Inuyasha's thoughts. --// How could I have ever let her think that? I didn't know it hurt her that much.... Would she even understand? Would she understand that I loved her? How could I tell her, when I couldn't even see that she loved me? What's the point in following? She doesn't care for me anymore. And she thought I only needed her to see the jewel shards.... Oh, this is painful. //--
"Kouga stop!" Kagome commanded. He stopped, and set her down, and looked at her face to face.
"What's wrong?" he asked her, worried.
"Stay here for a moment." Kagome said, determinedly.
"I'm coming with you." he said.
"I said stay here, or I won't come back!" she shouted.
"Okay okay!" he said.
Kagome walked back the way they came a good 3/4 a mile. Not to far off after that did she spot Inuyasha with tears in his eyes, facing away from her on a rock. Tiptoeing toward him, Kagome was trying to be quiet. But he smelled her scent, and was turning toward him, when she stepped on a leaf. His head snapped toward her, and she sweatdropped. But she had come to do one thing, and now she would do it.
"Is it true?" she demanded.
"Is what true?" Inuyasha said, not willing to face her again, his back turned once more to her.
"What you were just thinking." she said.
"How would you know what I was just thinking?" he said, his voice not rude, but thick with sadness.
"I heard it. I don't hear things, Inuyasha. I heard what you were thinking." she said.
"Well, if you really did... Yes, it's true... But I doubt you heard it, because you would ridicule me. And then go back to.. to..." Inuyasha broke. The tears flowed, and he got up, and ran away.
"Inuyasha, wait! I didn't mean to... I WON'T GO BACK TO KOUGA! PLEASE!" she pleaded, and she began to cry. Inuyasha stopped dead.
"You promise?" he asked, tears dried on his cheeks from the air hitting them. The wind picked up, drying Kagome's cheeks as well. She nodded, smiling slightly through her dried tears. Inuyasha walked over to her, and put his hands on her waist. She looked up in his eyes, and for the first time saw everything she had never seen before. The sadness, the fear, the love, the anger, the shock, the stress. Everything. And she stood on her tiptoes and leaned her face up to his, as he bent down, put his face to hers, and their lips met in a smooth, shocking kiss, that jolted them both. Kagome lifted her arms up around his neck, and Inuyasha pulled her in closer. He then deepend the kiss, before they broke off gasping for air. In a second, he recovered and scooped her up off of her feet.
Carrying her away, neither of them noticed Kouga in the background. He had been watching them ever since Kagome had called him back to her. Infuriated at the scene he had just witnessed, Kouga quickly caught up with the couple who were walking very slowly.
"Dog face." Kouga said.
"Kouga." Inuyasha breathed without even turning around. He put Kagome down, and spun.
"Very good. At least you're not totally disabled. You can still recognize a threat when it stands near you." Kouga said smugly.
"Shut up." Inuyasha said calmly. Although deep down inside, he was worried sick. He knew he was weak being in human form, but he couldn't change what was happening.
"I think not. And I believe you still owe me a fight." Kouga said, still smug.
"Kouga, stop this right now! Can't you see he's not fit to fight? Not to mention, wouldn't you rather beat him at his strongest?" Kagome argued.
"You stay outta this, woman. I'll fight who ever I wish." Kouga spat.
He ran full speed at Inuyasha, who yanked Tetsusaiga out, and cut Kouga's side open with it, while he dodged to the side of the attack.
Kouga swore, but turned and hit Inuyasha from behind. Inuyasha, not prepared for the blow, and also in a weakened state, fell to the ground hard. He rolled over and just before Kouga could move again, he saw something shoot through the air. // An arrow. Kagome's arrow. // he thought gratefully.
"I told you to stay out of this, woman. Instead you hit me with an arrow, and steal all of my jewel shards. Not too wise. After I kill your dog boy, I'll just... kill..... y-" Kouga had been growing weak from the sudden loss of so much power, and he fainted. Kagome hurried over to Inuyasha's side.
"Are you okay?!" she asked him. He grunted. She was really worried, but she was somewhat sure inside that he'd be fine, they just needed to sit him up. So she moved to sit him up, but she stopped. He was turning back into a dog demon. He sat up, good as new, and smiled.
"Now where were we again?" he asked. She laughed as he swept her back into his arms, and began to carry her away into the sunset.
"So why did you come with me, Kagome? I thought you loved the puppy." Kouga said. Kagome looked up in surprise.
