Chapter 3 - Unwelcome News

Reassured that his brother was finally awake and would heal, Sesshoumau finally permitted himself the luxury of a few hours' nap on the couch in his office. He was awakened five hours later by a tentative knock on the door.

“What is it?” He growled.

“Sir, I went to give Inuyasha his dinner, now that he is awake, but he wasn't in his room.” The evening nurse admitted.

“What?” Sesshoumaru sprang off the couch and strode from the office, following his nose to find his missing sibling. Damn it, Inuyasha, you shouldn't be moving yet. The demon was unsurprised to find his brother outside the neo-natal unit, staring through the plexiglas at a small silver-haired infant. One ear twitched as the boy rolled over in his sleep. Sesshoumaru moved to stand beside the hanyou.

“You should still be in bed. You haven't healed fully.”

“A lot you care,” was the toneless reply. Inuyasha's eyes never left the sleeping baby boy. “Is he really there? Is he really all right?”

“Yes. He was not injured, only born prematurely, so he recovered much faster than certain other hanyou I could mention, despite the new moon.”

“Feh. I'd like to see how you look after an accident like that.” Sesshoumaru merely inclined his head. “Wait, full moon? How long have I been unconscious?”

“Ten days.”

“What?”

“Believe it or not, Inuyasha, even your hanyou nature was having trouble coping with all your wounds.”

“Oh. Tell me something.”

“What?”

“Where is Kagome? I could only smell the pup.”

Sesshoumaru sighed. He had hoped, foolishly he knew, that the hanyou would not have noticed the lack. “There was nothing we could do. There was just too much damage for a human to endure.”

“What?” Inuyasha's exclamation emerged as no more than a squeak.

“The first car crashed directly into her. Even though the other two cars crashed into your side of the vehicle, the first left enough damage that she just couldn't survive.”

“You said she was resting peacefully!”

“She is. She is no longer in pain; her soul is finally at rest.”

“So you didn't even try to save her? You heartless bastard!”

“I spent a total of 20 hours in surgery on her, and 27 on you. Does that honestly sound like I didn't try?”

“That isn't what I meant.” Inuyasha's voice was a furious hiss. “You could have used Tenseiga, but you clearly didn't.”

“Inuyasha, our father's fang has limits, you better than anyone else should know that. It can cure death and the physical wounds that resulted in it. I cannot use it on those with terminal illnesses, because the illness will remain.”

“She didn't have any illnesses.”

“I know, but the same thing applies to those who are brain-dead. The brain is a strange and complex mechanism and Tenseiga cannot repair the loss of its knowledge and powers. Kagome had a series of seizures; her body's reaction to the immense amount of damage. During those seizures, her brain didn't receive enough oxygen, and entire sections of it just shut down. She was already comatose and legally brain-dead before she died. If I had revived her, she would have returned to that vegetative state. I let her go for her own sake; it was the only merciful thing to do.”

“What?” The anger and hatred were gone from Inuyasha's face, and the soft note in his voice reminded Sesshoumaru strongly of a lost child, seeking reassurance.

“I am sorry, Inuyasha, but Kagome is gone, and she will not be coming back. You must come to terms with that.” And then, Sesshoumaru did something he hadn't done since the hanyou was five years old and his mother had died. He walked up to the broken boy and wrapped his arms around him. “I am truly sorry, otouto.”
