Chapter 4 - Saying Goodbye
Sesshoumaru walked back to his office after safely seeing his grieving younger brother to his room.
Why didn't you tell him? A voice deep in Sesshoumaru's mind spoke up, the voice of his youkai.
Tell him what?
About the mating, about the will of your father.
The boy is grieving! He just lost the woman he loved. Would you have me tell him now?
I would have it done sooner rather than later. You have already almost lost him twice. What miko will you loose him to this time? Sesshoumaru winced at the truth in that statement. Twice had a miko almost stolen his brother from him.
Shut up! It will not happen a third time.
Then you must tell him. You must do it, and soon!
I take orders from no one, not even you. I will give Inuyasha time to mourn, and then I will tell him.
But do you have the time?

Sesshoumaru was awakened from a second nap by the sun rising outside his office window. He sat up and stretched, feeling perfectly refreshed after another seven hours of sleep. One of the blessings of the inu-youkai: extreme stamina, swift recovery. He chuckled to himself. Now that his brother was mending, it was time to start looking at his other patients as well. Sesshoumaru strode to his desk and reached for the stack of manila folders. His hand froze midway as a note placed on the glass tabletop caught his eye. He glanced at the contents, then gasped and re-read carefully.
Dear Sesshoumaru,
I just wanted to say thank you for all that you did for me, and for Kagome. I also wanted to say goodbye. My mate has gone, and I must follow. Please take care of the pup, and tell him that I am sorry. Goodbye Nii-sama.
Love, Inuyasha
Sesshoumaru wasted no time. Jumping from his chair and hurtling his desk, he was out of the door and down the hall in seconds. Inuyasha was not in his room, so Sesshoumaru ran to the next place he could think of. Damn him! And damn me for being so tired I didn't even hear him come in! Sesshoumaru breathed a sigh of relief when he saw a familiar figure pressed against the window of the neo-natal care unit.
“Inuyasha!”
“No, Sesshoumaru.” The hanyou tore his eyes off his son to look at the older inu. “I came to say goodbye to him, and then I am leaving. Don't try to stop me.”
“Inuyasha, you cannot do this. It isn't right.”
Inuyasha snorted incredulously. “Why, because I'm a hanyou, and half-breeds don't always follow their mates into death? You are the one always telling me to listen to my youkai, to act like a demon, to show some honor. Well now I am.”
Sesshoumaru grabbed the younger boy's arm and pulled him until they were facing. With his other hand he grabbed Inuyasha's chin, forcing the youngster's light golden eyes to meet his darker ones. “Listen to me, little brother. What is your heart telling you?”
“When I was pinned to Goshinboku, I was lost in darkness, wandering alone in a maze of nothingness until Kagome brought light into my life. She filled my heart with life, and that is why I risked everything time and time again to keep her safe. I tried, once, to let her go, and my heart wouldn't let me do it. We grew even closer when we married, and had the pup.” The tears in Inuyasha's eyes betrayed the calm of his voice, though he refused to let them fall.
“But why follow her into death?”
“I cannot live without her. Father may have survived without your mother, and you may have survived without Rin, but I cannot. My heart has been slowly cracking ever since you told me, and now it has shattered completely. Its not the pain, I can live with that. But I can hear her calling for me. She needs me with her where she is. I must follow her there.”
Sesshoumaru was startled by the steel in his brother's face, his voice. His mind whirled, grasping for anything to keep the hanyou from suicide. His eyes caught sight of the child behind the glass. “Your son, what about the pup? Will you just leave him as our father left you?”
One tear slid down Inuyasha's cheek, but his voice was still steady. “The pup is not alone, Nii-sama. He has you to look out for him, to protect him, just as I did. You will test him and prepare him for anything, as you did me. He is strong, and he will be stronger. But Kagome, where she is, has no one to protect her. I am the only one who can help her. You must understand that. I am sorry for what I must do to the pup, please tell him that, but I have to save Kagome.” Inuyasha wrenched his arm from the older youkai's grip and began to walk away.
Desperate, Sesshoumaru said the only thing he could think of. “Coward.”
