"Tell me again why we're doing this?"

Sango laughed softly at Kagome's irritation. They were sitting on an old tree stump as Inuyasha was lamenting the smell of the corpse at his feet. Miroku insisted on burning it. According to the inuhanyou, this only made the smell worse.

"Because Naraku sent another detachment after us."

"I meant listening to Inuyasha whine." Kagome sighed. She stood and began to walk towards the two men. "Miroku-sama, is there some other way to dispose of this without burning it?" She offered a peacemaking smile. It worked and both men calmed down considerably.

"I guess we can bury it," Miroku mused. "If Inuya--"

"'NEE-SAN!"

Kagome frowned and turned in the direction of the frantic shout. It was too far away to make out what exactly was heading towards them, but the voices sounded very familiar.

Inuyasha lifted his nose in the air and sniffed a few times. He grimaced. "Wolves," he muttered.

"Kouga?"

"Keh," he snorted. "That wimpy wolf wouldn't dare come back so soon." Kagome rolled her eyes and looked back towards the group of wolves heading towards her. There were only three of them but it made Kagome smile when she recognized the leader of the group.

"Ginta!"

He panted and offered a weak smile. "'Nee-san...you're hard to find..." He looked at Inuyasha and glared. "You're still with him?"

Kagome rolled her eyes and forced a look of annoyed patience on her face. "Ginta, what's wrong? Why are you trying to find me?"

"It's Kouga," he said and looked faintly worried. "Three days ago the den was attacked. If it hadn't been for him, then we would have lost all the pups. Touya's mate was carrying pups and--never mind, not important. He's hurt. He needs your help."

"Like hell," Inuyasha grumbled. "Tell Kouga he can rot--"

"How far?" Kagome interrupted. Already she was slipping her backpack onto her shoulders. Sango and Miroku exchanged a smile when Inuyasha began to sputter.

"Depends on how fast we can travel," Ginta replied. He looked at the inuhanyou with a little bit of nervousness. Kagome looked at Inuyasha who began to shake his head.

"If you think that I'm going to carry you to--"

"Sango-chan, can I borrow, Kirara?"

The Taijyin blinked and once more looked at Miroku. The monk was starting to smile. Slowly Sango nodded. "Of course, Kagome-chan."

"You're not going," Inuyasha insisted as Kirara changed into his large form. He stood in front of the cat youkai with his arms crossed. Kagome gave a soft sigh.

"Inuyasha..."

He winced. The threat was hanging in the air between them. For an instant he looked as if he might yield, but a fierce look of determination came over his face.

"Kagome you're not--"

"Osuwari."

When Inuyasha was able to pull himself off the ground, Kagome and the three wolf youkai were gone. He brushed himself off and looked at the corpse on the ground. He growled at it and then turned to head in the direction that Kagome had disappeared to.

Miroku and Sango just smiled at each other knowingly and followed.

Kagome smiled at the sleeping wolf youkai. His head was pillowed in her lap and he looked much better now than when she had arrived. The pack wouldn't tell her exactly what happened, but it had been terrible.

Kouga stirred and blinked his eyes open. "Kagome?"

She nodded. "Ginta came and got me. I don't know a lot about medicine, but I was able to help a little." She was gently running her fingers through his hair. She stopped when he sat up.

"Inu-kuro actually let you out of his sight?"

Kagome frowned and shook her head. "Inuyasha doesn't control me. I do what I wish. You're my friend, Kouga-kun. I always take care of my friends. Besides," she smiled wryly, "he should be here in the next day or so."

"How long have you been here?" Kouga shook his head and marveled at the fact that his hair seemed so smooth and silky. He always kept it pulled back and only washed it when he smelled bad. Kagome's grooming had made it feel like a new pups fur.

"Two or three days, I think. I kinda lost track." She slowly stood and winced as the stiffness in her legs protested.

Kouga snorted. "I can't believe he left you alone for three days."

"It's the magic number with us," Kagome said with a grin. "He should be here this afternoon." She stretched and yawned again. Kouga laughed quietly at her antics and stood as well.

"Take my nest," he said and began to walk out. "I'll hold the idiot off until you get enough sleep."

When Kagome awoke, it was dark. She rubbed her eyes and looked around at the dimly lit den. Several members of the pack were lounging in their own nests, and a few were even cuddled together.

She looked around for Kouga, but didn't see him. Concerned, she stood and began to walk to the entrance of the cave. She was only a few steps away from the waterfall when two wolves yanked her back.

"You can't leave 'Nee-san." The wolf had two blue spikes of hair on his head. "Kouga said to make sure you don't follow."

She blinked at him. "Not to follow where?" she asked calmly. Of all the things that would convince her to stay, that was not one of them. In fact, it made her nervous. Her anxiety increased when the two exchanged a glance. "Where is Kouga?"

They didn't answer her. Their tails were whipping back and forth in jittery motions. Kagome swallowed. Her throat suddenly felt dry.

"Where is Inuyasha?"

"'Nee-san..." His voice trailed off as Kagome pushed both of them away. They couldn't hold onto her without hurting her. Both knew that if she was hurt, Kouga would kill them.

"Where are they?" she demanded. She had walked over to her bag and pulled out her bow and quiver. "Why wasn't I woken up when Inuyasha came?"

"He never got this far, Kagome-sama." Kagome whirled around to see Miroku sitting against the rough wall of the cave. "Kouga smelled the fight between another youkai and us. He came to help. Now he and Sango are trying to get him to pick up Tetsaiga."

Her heart nearly stopped. "He's not...he can't be...I thought we had taken care of this..."

Miroku smiled weakly and closed his eyes. "Inuyasha fights for you, Kagome-sama. He does not fight as well when you are not there. He doesn't fight his youkai blood as hard when you are not there." He drew in a painful breath. "Kouga will not kill him, but he thinks that Inuyasha will kill you if you show up."

Kagome clenched her jaw and turned to the wolves. "Take me to where they are. If anything, I'll distract him. If worse comes to worse, I can slam him to the ground." She paused and looked around the cave. "Where is Kirara?"

"'Nee-san, Kouga will be pissed if--"

"I don't care." The small cat demon mewled softly but transformed into his larger form. "Inuyasha needs me. So does Kouga." She climbed on Kirara's back. "Now either you're going to show me where they are, or I'm going to go out there all by myself, and that will make Kouga even more upset."

"Dear God...how long as this been going on?" Kagome gently wrapped Sango's arm as Kirara stood guard over them. Kouga and Inuyasha were fighting several feet away. Every so often, one would push the other close by.

The two males hadn't noticed Kagome yet, and she was happy to keep it that way.

"Since mid-day," Sango winced. "Thanks." She watched as Kagome stood. The dark-haired girl picked up her bow and quiver.

"I should probably attempt to stop this," Kagome said. Her heart began to race. A gust of wind blew behind her and she watched as both Inuyasha and Kouga froze.

Suddenly, she was the center of their attention.

"KAGOME!" Kouga began to run towards her. "Get out of here!"

A low growling stopped whatever it is that Kouga was going to say next. Kagome looked at Inuyasha and winced. His eyes were a blood red and the angry slash of color on his cheeks. The other times he was like this, his eyes looked right through her. Now they were focused clearly on her face.

"Get away from her," he growled. Kouga actually paused and then narrowed his eyes.

"You haven't said a clear sentence since I got here," he snapped. "You're not going to hurt Kagome!"

"Idiot." Inuyasha was walking towards them. "Only a fool would hurt their mate."

"Not this again," Kagome muttered. "Inuyasha," she said slowly, "Kouga already knows that I'm your mate." Maybe if she played along, then Inuyasha would calm down enough to pick up Tetsaiga.

"His scent is all over you," he snapped. "He forced you."

"No, no. Kouga and I are friends. He was hurt and I helped him." Kagome smiled slightly and then started to walk to him. Kouga grabbed her arm and stopped her.

Inuyasha took exception to this.

Kouga nearly lost his arm. Kagome gasped in surprise as suddenly Inuyasha was between both of them. She could feel the youkai blood in him that gave him this strength.

"Inuyasha!" Kagome tried to grab his arm to stop him from hurting Kouga. "Please don't!"

The hanyou stiffened and lowered his arm. His eyes were still red and the low growl still came from his chest, but he seemed calmer with Kagome touching him. He could feel a dampness seeping through his clothes.

"Please," she whispered. "Don't hurt him."

Inuyasha clenched his jaw and glared at the wolf at his feet. "Do you wish that you were his?" he growled at her. Kagome whimpered when his claws pierced her arm. He pulled her harshly to him, his red eyes glaring into hers. "Have you been with him yet?"

"Inuyasha, you know that isn't true," she said quietly. She almost activated the spell on his rosary, but it was possible she might be caught under him. "Please, calm down and pick up your sword."

"No."

"Inuyasha, you're hurting me," Kagome whispered. She blinked back her tears. She knew that they would not work against this part of his mind. His grip lessened. "You just need to calm down. Pick up Tetsaiga." She stiffened when he began to growl again. Tetsaiga was several paces away, lying on the ground. Kagome tried to pull away so she could bring it to him, but the biting of his claws told her that wasn't going to happen.

"No."

"Inuyasha--"

"You are my mate. You will do as I say." He wrenched her close and his arm around her waist kept her restrained. He leapt into the air, leaving behind Kouga and Sango.
