Chapter Three
They found themselves in the middle of a large clearing…and they weren't alone. Naraku floated high above them, the Jewel of Four Souls clutched tightly in one hand.
"What is he doing?" Inuyasha demanded.
"With the power of the Shikon no Tama, Naraku summoned unto himself an army like none had ever seen before. Compelled by the power of the Shikon no Tama, the demons, hanyou and Youkai alike, united beneath Naraku's bloody banner." The angel's voice had taken on a peculiar timbre, as though she were reciting a prophecy. "Against them, there could be no victory."
As Inuyasha watched, hundreds of billions of demons began swarming into the clearing. Among them he noted many he had killed, such as Oshou, the Thunder Brothers, Yura...
"What happened?" he demanded.
"It might have been easier if the humans had surrendered. But…they didn't. I'm not entirely sure humans are capable of surrendering. Regardless, they tried to fight."
"And?"
"It was a disaster," Chibi-Kaitlyn replied. "Care to see for yourself?"
"Not particularly."
"Too bad," the angel replied with an impish grin. "You have to."
Another flash of light. Inuyasha decided he was really getting sick of this method of transportation. When the light-induced temporary blindness wore off, he was standing in the middle of Sango's village. Only it had a barricade around it now.
"Something tells me that's not modern art," Inuyasha said.
"There's a boy climbing the barricade!" someone yelled. Indeed, at that very moment, Miroku dragged himself over the barricade. He stood unsteadily, looking as though he might collapse at any second.
"Get General Sango!" he demanded, though his voice was unsteady as he was. Sango was before him almost instantly.
"Miroku? Good god, what happened to you?" she asked, concern shining in her hazel eyes.
"Naraku's army is coming," Miroku said. "They'll be here any second. But they saw me and I don't think I can stand anymore." The houshi collapsed, but Sango caught him and guided his fall. At that exact moment, it began to rain lightly.
"Don't you dare die on me, houshi-sama," Sango growled at him. Miroku coughed.
"Too late," he rasped. "Poison…hive of…things…in the…Kazaana. Miracle…made it here. Goodbye…Sango-chan…"
"No. NO! You're going to live, damn it!" Sango said, a futile protest from deep in the back of her throat.
"Nothing…you can do. Can't…purge…poison…" He coughed, and locked his eyes with Sango for a brief moment. "Sango…I…always…loved you…" And then he said no more, as his eyes closed for the last time.
"NO!" Sango howled. She was soaked from head to toe in rain and tears. The sprinkle had become a full-on rainstorm, and she looked like a wild animal as she kneeled above the body of the man she loved. Beside her, Kohaku placed a hand on her shoulder.
"There will be a time to mourn for him later," the young man whispered. "Let's make sure that he hasn't died in vain." Sango nodded weakly, and wiped the tears from her eyes. She unslung her boomerang.
Inuyasha was suddenly floating above the scene. He saw Naraku's army pouring over the hills, swarming towards the village like a nest of ants to a cookie crumb. Naraku marched at the head of the army, the jewel now set into his forehead. He waved one hand, sending a wave of power into the barricade. It exploded inwards, eliciting final cries of pain from the men guarding it. Demons swarmed in the opening…only to be cut down by Sango's boomerang. She howled with the fury of a wounded animal. It seemed at first that her anger alone might carry the day. Then it happened.
Sango saw Kohaku approaching from the corner of her eye. She thought nothing of it…until he swung his sword, drawing blood across her left hip. She stumbled backwards, partly from pain, but mostly from surprise and disbelief.
"Kohaku? What…" She was cut off as Kohaku spoke…and it was Naraku's voice.
"Kuukuukuu…foolish girl. I killed your little monk, and I will kill you too! None interfere with Naraku and survive!" Kohaku/Naraku lunged forward, sword aimed for the taijya's heart. She froze like a deer staring into the headlights of an approaching car. And then, just as the tip of the sword plunged into her chest, she whipped her own blade from its sheath, taking off Kohaku's head as he impaled her. Both collapsed, dead before they hit the ground. And the demon army swarmed into the village, destroying everything in their path.
Inuyasha tried to scream, but he was, of course, inaudible to all except Chibi-Kaitlyn, who watched him with an almost sadistic, impish grin. All Inuyasha could do was watch. Watch as the village was razed to the ground. Watch as all inhabitants were either slaughtered or taken prisoner. He wheeled on his angelic companion with a snarl.
"Make it stop!" he pleaded. "In the name of Kami, make it stop!" And it did. Everything, everyone froze exactly where they were, even if they happened to be in midair at the time.
"Is this upsetting you, Inu-sama?" Chibi-Kaitlyn asked, innocence written on her face in large, bold capitals.
"You think?" Inuyasha growled sarcastically. "Damn straight I'm upset! Anyone else die because of me? Or the lack thereof, I suppose."
"You're thinking of Kagome, aren't you?" Chibi-Kaitlyn asked. She laughed lightly. "Silly Inu-sama. You're so predictable." She waved her hand, producing yet another burst of light…
