(I completely forgot that Kagome had been wounded in chapter 7 so here’s to make up for it.)
((Chapter 12))
"Kagome, you know I still want you to be my woman." My mate, he thought silently. Through the years that Kagome had known him, whenever he had known she was in the area, he would come to her in a whirl of wind and say the exact same thing. It was no different this time. Inuyasha was gone but she still had two men vying for her affections.
"I know." There was no way that she couldn't know. He took advantage every chance that was handed to him. She sighed and glanced over at him as he led the way through the forest. "I didn't exactly agree to eat with you. You said that all on your own."
His smile was wolfish. Confident. "And yet here you are."
What was she going to do now? Inuyasha wasn't here to keep Kouga at a distance.
He stopped and turned, catching her hand in his to halt her. He lifted his free hand and ran a finger down her cheek, over the claw marks that marred her skin. They had started healing nicely. Lucky for her, she wouldn't have any scars. Just the thought that Inuyasha had managed to hurt her again left him seething with anger. He lifted his head towards the sky and closed his eyes. "You're healing nicely."
"I'm a Priestess." She shrugged. That was at least one good thing about the spiritual powers. One thing she had learned over the years was that while she was human, she did heal at a faster rate than normal humans. She nudged his ribs with her elbow. "Now, Kouga, you promised me dinner. I'm holding you up to that offer." Anything to get him off the thought of her being his mate.
She missed the hot look that flashed in his eyes. Then his arm was around her waist, turning her around to face him as he began to steadily walk her backwards until the hard bark of a tree dug into her back.
"I know, so eat up." Was all he said before his hands speared into her hair and his lips caught hers.
She didn't stand a chance. By the time she realized what was happening, his tongue was in her mouth, his body keeping hers pinned against the tree. She'd been with his Pack for years now. Not because she needed protection but because she felt she owed them for his death. It had torn her apart when she'd thought he was dead. Somewhere--deep down--there was something that cared for him. The thought, along with his body, was all it took for her resistance to come crashing down. Her mind was whispering a warning but she couldn't hear it over the roaring in her ears, the hot rush of blood flowing through her body. One of his hands slid down and curved around her, spanning the small of her back to pull her up tighter against him.
"I never had the chance to do this because of him." He whispered fiercely, bracing an arm over her head. He pulled back slowly, staring down into her flushed face. "I didn't stand a chance." Now, he was pulling out all the stops. He would do whatever it took to make her see that she cared for him. He lowered his head again but he didn't move in like he had before. His lips paused inches from her and then grazed the soft contours. Just that. A tease, moving back and forth over hers. He had always imagined what she would taste like, how she would feel in his arms. His imagination was nothing compared to his. She was hot and sweet and no matter what she said, she was breaking. She wanted him--somewhere in her mind and in her heart, she cared for him. He'd be damned if he lost the fight. She was like honey, sweet and warm. Her body fit perfectly against his.
"Stay here with me. Just for a while." He whispered against her lips. The dazed look in her eyes was welcoming, one he relished. He liked the fact that he could do that to her. That his kisses alone held that power over her. "Say yes." He kissed her again, slowly, till he felt her sink against him. He felt her wordless nod and smiled against her lips before pulling back.
"Come on." He wrapped his fingers around her hand and tugged her with him deeper into the forest. He stopped before a wide lake and then sat down, leaning his back against the large foot of a tree. He patted the grass beside him. "Come on, sit down. I don't bite." He heard her sigh, knowing that her defenses were slowly building back up. He didn't give a damn. She dropped down beside him but he curled his arms around her waist and lifted her, settling her between his legs so that her back was pressed against his chest. He wrapped his arms around her and grinned, rubbing his nose against the curve of her neck. "Not too hard, anyways." He teased her softly.
She couldn't help but relax in his arms as her gaze drifted up to the star filled sky. She felt safe and warm in his embrace. Something she honestly couldn't say she had felt with Inuyasha. It was dark, so dark that the stars in the sky were small twinkles. "It's beautiful." She breathed the words out, almost in awe.
"So are you." He could get used to this. The feel of her in his arms was wonderful. He settled more fully against the dress and drew his knees up, cushioning her between his legs. He inhaled, his eyes sliding half closed as her scent drifted up. "Sleep. I know you're tired from everything that's happened."
"But..."
"I promise I won't do anything." He bit her neck gently, heard her disbelieving but trusting sigh. "I promise, Kagome." He murmured. "I'll keep you safe while you sleep..."
She was tired. Sleep had eluded her, the stress of Mai and then Kouga had kept her awake. Her thoughts were unnerving because she wasn't sure. She didn't know what to think of everything that had happened. She didn't know what to think of Kouga. Still, as she lay in his arms and felt the steady beat of his heart against her back, she was lulled to sleep by the strength--the comfort--of his arms around her. Yes, she cared for him. What frightened her was the extent of it. How quick she was falling. She wasn't sure if she could survive the heartbreak again.
He was going to keep her. The way she felt in his arms, the peace that resounded through him...He closed his eyes, smiling. He wasn't in the least threatened by Kumiko. Kumiko might think he had a chance but Kouga knew better. Kagome was his and before everything was over and done with, Kagome would say those words. He had never known the satisfaction that he was feeling now. With a sigh, he wrapped her tighter in his arms and let sleep claim him.
